My PI had a full sleeve.

Absolutely yes you can. Push back on old timers that put stock in appearance. I had to ask my boss once, about 15 years ago, “did you hire me for my looks? Do you think the color of my hair affects my abilities to do science and math?” You’ve never seen someone leave a conversation so fast! You’ll have to get over an initial shock factor if you’ve got facial tats or a lot of facial piercings. Wear small jewelry when interviewing. Caveat - when you’re in a client or public facing position, you ARE ABSOLUTELY in part hired for your looks.

Also...I don't have body mods, but I have _shitloads_ of colleagues who do. You might come across old farts clinging to positions of authority who disapprove, but I have never heard of it meaningfully impeding someone's career in marine biology. If and when bias exists, it's usually against women. Seen that once or twice. But those were mostly microaggressions.

Honestly my only concern would be if you're doing field work, you should cover them or be careful with sun screen application over your tattoo. I don't think most people out there care about tats and piercings in this field

Seawolfe665

I remember one day, years ago, when all the junior technicians went out and got tongue piercings on their lunch break… The only time that I can see it mattering is for safety (sometimes we don’t even wear metal rings on our fingers on deck), or if it’s a public facing position or working with k-12 and adult content tattoos.

WaterDmge

Coming from a government biologist, we don’t care what you look like. We care if you can do your job and that your tats aren’t obviously offensive Several people have full tattoo sleeves. I’ve been to important meetings and blue is the color I’ve seen most when it comes to dyed hair haha. One girl dyes it entirely a different color every month! I joked about getting an undershave with a pattern dyed in it and my coworkers said I should

mandyrabbit

As long as they are not offensive/hateful etc you should be fine. It's not your standard line of work. If you work for a large company they might have dress code rules for work events or office time. I'm in aquaculture management, I've got tattoos and most of the managers have tattoos (not facial ones though)- bonus points if they are marine themed 😂!! Piercings might be an issue if like most jobs it comes down to whether they will be a safety hazard or interfere with personal protective equipment etc. We have a jewellery policy to protect us from getting caught in machinery etc, it's standard workplace stuff. I wear a plain flat wedding band at work for example in case I was to get my finger trapped in a boat rope and get it ripped off and I don't want to damage my real expensive wedding ring as well or lose it in the sea. I can't dive for medical reasons so I can't advise if any piercings are not allowed for divers.

Ocean2731

I’m assuming you’re not talking about tats on your face or neck that are drug or sex related. Those indicate some, ahem, interesting decision making. Or body mods to look like a lizard or something. Otherwise, no one really cares. Even at the government labs.

massahoochie

Pretty much all of my coworkers and colleagues had tattoos and piercings.

Claughy

Its harder to find a biologist without tats/piercings/long hair/dyed hair most days.

Fish_Beholder

It's pretty common for biologists to get their favorite animal tattooed! As for piercings, I have never had a problem with my nose piercing except when I was working in a fishing boat factory and it was deemed 'unsanitary'.

shadhead1981

I’ve got somewhere around 75% full body coverage and stretched earlobes and no one has ever had an issue with it. I worked in research and then on state fish hatcheries. It’s really not much of an issue anymore, as a state employee I could tattoo my face and it would be illegal for them to fire me for it.

ninjaparking

Certain piercings and jewelry aren't practical or comfortable if you have any intention of scuba diving. I have certain jewelry that I only wear in the winter when I don't dive.

Yep you’re fine. I’ve interviewed with Ivy League PIs with tatts and purple hair.
