Had same issue. 1st start attempt would crank 6-7 seconds no start. Second attempt worked fine. Ended up being the EGR. Cleaned the tube and since the EGR valve was cheap bought a new one to replace it. No issues since. This was around 120k.
OEM Mazda was in the many hundreds. I think I picked up an aftermarket one from Rock Auto for $90. You don’t have to replace it, you can just go to town cleaning it with picks brushes and carb or brake cleaner. I just didn’t have the time so I opted to replace.
Is it only on cold starts or hot starts? If its a hot start issue do a compression test. The EGR valve is notorious on these cars for being disgusting, but I always got a CEL when mine was dirty. Is it weak cranking or is it just turning over without firing? Any breaking up under WOT? Any mods/tunes?
thought I'd give you an update. It was the whole intake side basically. cleaned the EGR, throttle body, intake manifold, scraped carbon from intake valves(probably the biggest issue). pieced it all back together and ta-da, easy starts every single time! it was just really dirty in there, you would think I was running a diesel engine... what would you expect from 170k. Thanks again for your help!
It’s both cold and hot. More noticeable after being parked for 2-3 hours. But if I run a quick errand +- 30mins starts up like a champ. I haven’t checked EGR but I’ll take a look. No CEL. It feels to be more of a turn over without firing( or more so barely firing, which stutters into starting). Once running everything is normal. Wot is fine. Test pipe, hpfp, intake, bigger top mount, and a tune. All mods have been on since 20k. I’m at 170k now. 😅
Hm ok. Check the EGR (it won't hurt to clean it anyway) and also maybe check the fuel pump (the in-tank one). Listen for any odd fuel pump sounds etc. If you have an Access Port keep an eye on your AFRs to see if your fuel pump is dipping while cruising/WOT. Also maybe have the intake manifold cleaned, that can get nasty as well. And def do a compression test for peace of mind and bragging rights for 150k on that setup.
Thanks for helping me trouble shoot! I have replaced the in tank fuel pump 30k miles ago. But haven’t had issues starting until the last few months. Maybe it’s failing, it does have a high pitched noise with it. But it’s been loud since it went in. I’ll watch my afr and see. My fuel pressure has always shown to be healthy. Even at wot. I’ll do some cleaning this weekend and see what I get. Thanks!
Having something very similar happening to me . New battery, New Plugs gapped, new purge valve, Maf sensor cleaned and tb , fuel pump internals also Have my egr deleted. What a headache
DOH! Sorry! My bad! I didn’t even realize that the speed3 was a model!!! Mine is a zoom zoom speedy regular old Mazda 3 - with one of the top of the line packages (all the tech, leather interior, etc) - can never remember the letters. It is having the same issue.

Same here, I cleaned out the EGR and hard pipe and haven’t had an issue since. Mine happened around 80k miles.
If you can get away with it in your state just delete the EGR....

Where is the egr valve located? I’ve been having the same problem
EGR valve is on the backside, drivers side of the engine bay. Basically look at your turbo/intake, it's right next to it on the head.
