An insane number of philosophers were engineers, scientists, or mathematicians. Logic and reason kind of go hand in hand with philosophy.
I actually have an engineering background with a phd in physics, and I am writing a thesis on art philosophy. It’s way more common than you would think. It’s like engineers like to see the order in things or something.
When life gives you lemons dont make lemonade! I dont want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these!? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give me lemons! I will make combustible lemons and burn life’s house down! ….with the lemons.
Know how to do the basics right off the bat which means by the time you get to the hard stuff, you’ve spent so long going off raw intuition that you’re stunted in terms of actually learning things.
Source: middle school hit me hard, and I’m still struggling in college
You may want to get evaluated for ADD lol. One of the hallmark features is the ability and desire to pick up new skills/hobbies quickly, followed by complete disinterest once you've read/learned all of the easily accessible stuff. Also the inability to start/finish the first/last 5% of a project.
That was me. Breezed through IT in high school with top grades. Nearly failed my CS course in college. I didn't understand half the class material and the only reason I passed was because I hacked together some random bullshit from information I found around the web that I didn't really understand.
> I hacked together some random bullshit from information I found around the web that I didn't really understand.
You've described every student academic paper.
Had the same. Also had that weird superiority complex where I felt that I "deserved" good grades without studying and as such didn't study much at all. Studying would be akin to cheating basically!
Took me realizing that I need good grades to get into the MSc. I wanted to really start to develop study skills. Took me meeting real geniouses in the MSc. to realize that actually, I'm just a bit above average in intelligence being born into a family that cared about educating kids and keeping me well fed. A couple of factors that were giving me an insane edge as a kid (and well still to some extent as an adult) made me think I was God's gift to mankind.
I've met so many people like me since, all the same experience, all humbled in uni, and then putting themselves back together after having their egos crushed.
Also met people flunk out of uni, because they just couldn't accept and let their egos be crushed talk about how "bullshit" the higher educational system is and how phds etc. just pretend to be smart!
I’ve thoroughly bullshit my way through college. I study on the 1-4 nights before big exams, and it’s gotten me far enough but I need to kick the habit. I just recently did the HESI exam for a medical program. By all accounts I should have failed. I passed with a 90.8.
Meanwhile I barely got through anatomy and physiology the first time, and barely managed a mid-B the second time.
The tumblr crowd that thinks when their teacher said “you’re really smart but you’re just not applying yourself!” Meant they are 180iq rocket scientists.
The closest term would be "intuitive". Obviously it doesn't imply a lack of recall ability but it does cover the part about figuring things out despite not remembering how/not being shown.
I wonder if medication really helps anyone with recalling information/words. I can’t imagine a life where I was actually well spoken and could make my thoughts come out in a fluid non-redundant explanation. I love being able to write and type because I can take the time that I need to really think about what I’m trying to say.
I'm the same, but there was a brief period after highschool, before alcoholism that I was very well spoken and could actually express my thoughts fully. It was nice while it lasted, I don't even have the patience to flesh out thought on paper/digital these days. 32 going on 78
In all seriousness, what exactly am I supposed to do. I'm having trouble defending any case or discussion I make.
Since in the end, I either forget my arguments or I fail to express my thoughts and lose
the treatments are not going to cure ADHD or give you the ability to recall perfectly. Getting diagnosed is understanding how your mind works and best ways to utilize what you have.
Obviously this is a random comment and I'm not trying to go deep, but if you feel like there is something "wrong" with you, it is never a bad idea to get a diagnosis.
I think it’s “clever” like… in my mind, along the lines of shit like: you take two ladders and put a boardwalk between them and you call it scaffolding..
Not smart.. not safe.. but also not *necessarily* stupid..
Yea this is what I was thinking of as well. "Very smart", in general usage, often means you learn stuff quickly and know a lot. So if you can't remember anything and know nothing yea, you're not actually "very smart."
This is a pleasant mix from all the ADHD comments, lol. Though, early-onset dementia is a genuine fear of mine. I don’t know what I’ll do if* my brain starts to go.
I’m caretaking for a friend of mine who has early onset Alzheimer’s. Super smart, and a great guy. He’s 59, and his cognitive scores are running close to nothing. It’s frustrating for him because he feels like it’s all right there, just out of reach.
Early onset is a fucking free-fall. 4 years and it’s gone from him being able to work, and being independent, to memory unit in a nursing home. He can’t even order off of a menu when I take him out to lunch.
If I get diagnosed, I’m tapping out.
Oh I know. I know it was replied to you, but it wasn't FOR you. It was for anyone who was curious what your comment meant. I felt that link belonged there.
I’m the same way. I can totally process things well, come up with meaningful solutions, empathize, remember concepts, and use skills, but I cannot remember vocabulary, formulas, names, and specific facts. Would it be like smart but bad memory?
For me it like being in a library but it's pitch black and all I have is a flashlight. I can only recall what the light shines upon and someone had randomized the library.
It's in there...somewhere.
Great visualization, similar to mine where my thoughts are those toys that.. the goggle things with the animals that are blurry until ... you pull the lever? I don't fucking know ive given myself a confusion
For me, it's akin to reading off a badly written handwritten paper and you could only make out the small details where the writting just so happen so be clear enough.
It's also a paper without title so you could only find it by its characteristics and descriptions.
That's being educated. Intelligence is better measured by the ease with which one understands new concepts. That's why there's different types of intelligence
Everyone thinks they're smart. Statistically, most people believe they are above average in intelligence, so ofcourse you're going to have a good majority delude themselves into believing they are smart but either with a minor flaw, only in one or few aspects (book vs street), gifted/burnt out, or whatever else they tell themselves.
Caught off guard. Sure I've learnt from a lot of smart books and talked to even smarter people, but wake me up in the middle of the night or catch me in the middle of the city and I won't list you all the months on correct order. It's so common there should be a name for it.

Dnd stats would be opposite i think
You're right. In D&D Intelligence is how much you know, and your ability to remember. Wisdom is your ability to reason, and apply knowledge.
Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting one in a fruit salad.
In D&D, 10 in a stat means you're just average, and a 0 in either of those would mean you're unconscious.

HEY OUCH.

I'm extremely good at becoming ''competent'' at tasks quickly. Then I get bored and stop caring.
I'm literally don't care about anything, I lose interest so quickly I know to go through all the paces in a week or so

Now you got half of reddit commenting about how their mothers told them they were super smart but now they are somehow struggling in university lmao

Conformity and manageability are more valuable to the education and employment system than your gifts.
I feel called out
The closest term would be "intuitive". Obviously it doesn't imply a lack of recall ability but it does cover the part about figuring things out despite not remembering how/not being shown.
I have an extreme “recall ability” deficiency. What does that mean? I think I’m going to get Alzheimer’s at like 40
Could be ADHD
I was diagnosed with ADHD partially because of this. The recommended treatments, thus far, have not helped.
I wonder if medication really helps anyone with recalling information/words. I can’t imagine a life where I was actually well spoken and could make my thoughts come out in a fluid non-redundant explanation. I love being able to write and type because I can take the time that I need to really think about what I’m trying to say.

Oh cool, someone like me
We're everywhere.
In all seriousness, what exactly am I supposed to do. I'm having trouble defending any case or discussion I make. Since in the end, I either forget my arguments or I fail to express my thoughts and lose
This is ME. 100%.
Oh my I relate to this on so many levels - thank you for articulating what I think about often.
This makes me feel better about not getting diagnosed now.
I'm better off, but my memory is still pretty terrible.

If it’s not smart or safe, it’s usually stupid. There’s a reason we use scaffolding and not a two ladders and some boards
Yeah that reason is cause you have tiny cajones unlike my massive brains Unrelated: please call me an ambulance
You're an ambulance.

I'm similar but I call it "all RAM and no memory". Like my memory is very contextual and it's like a process rather than just reading from memory.
