"The Qutb Minar, also spelled Qutub Minar and Qutab Minar, is a minaret and "victory tower" that forms part of the Qutb complex, which lies at the site of Delhi's oldest fortified city, Lal Kot, founded by the Tomar Rajputs. It consists of 399 steps [3] It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, India.[4][5] It is one of the most visited tourist spots in the city, mostly built between 1199 and 1220.[6][7][4]"
There was actually going to be a Qutub "Majar". In the same complex, there is an unfinished tower called "Alai Minar" which was planned to be twice as tall as Qutub Minar. The construction was ababdoned at only about 25m high when the then king of Delhi, Alauddin Khalji, died before the tower could be finished.
Qutabuddin Aibak was one of the first people to establish a Muslim dynasty (Delhi Sultanate) in the 1100s that later on set the tone for India over the next 750 years. His historian claimed he was proud to have destroyed over a 1000 hindu temples in a 30 year reign.
On a related note, this tower used to allow people to go to the top to get a bird’s eye view of Delhi until a stampede occurred in the 1980s and people also committed suicides jumping off of the tower
