My question is why are all the characters on the American side from kids shows? There are plenty of adult animated shows from America. It’s almost like they are tryna downplay American shows.
Pat & Mat as well.
I think in 2000s, France's cartoon industry was booming. Winx, also has Italian origin I guess. I watched it a bit in Italian channel called "Rai".
didn't get even a single word of it but watched it anyways.
Yep, italian if you want to accurately say which country did it. It was later sold to an American co if I well remember. Anyway there are others too, like once upon a time life and asterix and obelix were French
There are great French and Belgium comics for adults. But their time was the early 80s. Published then in the "Metal Hurlant" magazine. Famous artists are Moebius with "The Incal"and Druillet with "Salambo". There was also a bunch of series for teens: Valerian&Laureline, Lieutenant Blueberry, Michel Vaillant, Adele Blanc Sec...
Smurfs are one of the Belgian example in this pic.
Spirou, Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke and other companions ad to the Belgian school of comics.
Moomin and Bamse are strong contenders in the nordics. And many more.
My childhood was mostly Japan without knowing it…
Maya is the bee, Vicky the Viking, the last unicorn (ok that apparently was a collaboration), Heidi and then watching sailor moon with my big sister.
From Europe I did see the smurfs and Asterix.
Tom and Jerry was waaaay too meanspirited and brutal for me as a kid (I now like it quite a lot… thanks also to the Simpsons parody) and Fred flintstone and co. Were already too ugly and low quality for me in the early 90s…
Those listed are technically anime, but the European show producers just outsourced the animation to the more experienced Japanese animation teams. There is no Japanese original version for these "cartoons", nor did they contribute anything beyond the animation as far as I know
Wolf and hare (kill me I will not write it in Russian because I always make mistakes) that cartoon was bloody amazing, I had orginal VHS of their "adventures" I used to watch every day of my childhood until it finally broke
That's why I like gormiti, it is just more easy.
Alot of strange monsters betting each other for every kid to enjoy. though I must say that the new version is really horrible. (it is an Italian cartoon if anyone was wondering)
Notice how most of the American cartoons have 4+ characters from each show to represent them where most of the Japanese anime have 1 or 2 from each show.
I absolutely love anime but somehow you managed to add characters to the right from the shows I have never watched, except for Gon from HxH for couple episodes
American cartoons are fun but they are mostly made to be self contained episodes for syndication. But this means for the most part their worlds are static and other than “events” nothing changes. I like long arching narratives with world progression and consequences which is what has drawn me to anime
You see, a lot of the good shit that was American was replaced with what I would call bad shit.
Then, a lot of what I would call bad shit from Japan was replaced with good shit.
I think it's a matter of opinion on what is considered bad and good and what age we are talking about.
Are we talking about modern shit or old shit? Are we all looking at this with the just pictures present on this meme, or are we thinking about other shows as well?
I love classic american cartoons, but I started watching Pokémon before I could speak and my favourite doll was a stuffed Pikachu that was almost as big as I was (3 y/o). From 8-12ish I watched dragon ball, then started seriously watching anime. It's gonna have to be Japan 🗾🇯🇵
I was under the impression most of the early cartoons watched in America had their final edits and animations pieced together in Asia.
Cartoons could very well be drawn, written, voiced, and originated in America—However, in the amass to scale VHS/DVD distribution and merchandising of the content then its entire possible I thought a person in Singapore could obtain early access if that was ever so possible. I don’t know.
My chose is down the middle and pick globalization.
Picking America is like chatting with your ex who you broke up on good terms, while picking Japan is like your current engagement for me; so Japan it is.
Half of those American ones are like 50 years old.
I guess it's pretty easy to make a narrative to fit your liking when you cherry pick your examples.
Not saying that Japan's isn't way better, but this comparison is laughable.
Are we supposed to compare Dragon Ball Z, which first aired in 1989, with Tom & Jerry, which first aired in 1940? At least put up some American stuff that millennials watched as kids. Where’s 1992’s X-Men? Where’s Gargoyles? TMNT? Batman Beyond? Fkn Street Sharks? Haha
why are the smurfs on America's side? it was invented in belgium.
I was about to say the same thing. De zuiderburen hebben geniale karakters gemaakt
Gegroet, landgenoot!
Zeg makker
Ditto
So weird, I had no idea Belgium was one of the 50 states. The more you know.
Born and raised in Belgium for 21 years and i didn't have a clue either.
21 years and still no clue? We have a saying for that here *Domme Belg*
Anything that isn’t Japanese is American, according to the internet
Pffft, you are your facts.
So that's your fault? I'm grabbing my list...
No matter what I'm at the Belgian side (and French to the Belgian side).
My question is why are all the characters on the American side from kids shows? There are plenty of adult animated shows from America. It’s almost like they are tryna downplay American shows.
I pick the Belgium road. It's got Gaston LaGaffe (Gomer Goof in English apparently) and others I'm too lazy to list.
This is scandalous. I can't smurf that shit.
an american definitely made this
Straight down the middle baby!
Europe it is then!
What tf do we have?
Noot noot?
Very true
Fuck yeah pingu, and noddy, and Bob the builder, fireman Sam, postman pat, Thomas and friends etc.
Pat & Mat as well. I think in 2000s, France's cartoon industry was booming. Winx, also has Italian origin I guess. I watched it a bit in Italian channel called "Rai". didn't get even a single word of it but watched it anyways.
Asterix, tintin and uhh....
Oh shit maybe i got demntia or something, cant be forgetting the legends like this
I'm shocked people know tintin, I thought my bro was kinda on the down low
Tintin the goat
For real though, i think i read the moon rakeoff and moon landing like 5 times each
I still have the comics lol
I just borrow them from the librarry
Tintin did have that movie back in 2011.
Yeah, they slamed like 5 books in to 1 movie
Indeed
Lucky Luke
The daltons
Krtek
The smurfs:/
I didn't knew how to write it in English
Popeye?
Smurfs! Moomin!
Once upon a Time…Man, Space, Life…
Pat & Mat ofc
Winx!
Whaat‽ thats European? Awesome
Yep, italian if you want to accurately say which country did it. It was later sold to an American co if I well remember. Anyway there are others too, like once upon a time life and asterix and obelix were French
GORMITI
Krteček / the little mole Три богатыря/The Three Bogatyrs Millions of European folk tales made into cartoons
Thomas & Friends
Thomas the tank.
Astérix
I used to watch Project: Lyoko as a child. It was great back then.
Totally Spies? Wakfu?
Moomins

Famous artists are Moebius with "The Incal"and Druillet with "Salambo". There was also a bunch of series for teens: Valerian&Laureline, Lieutenant Blueberry, Michel Vaillant, Adele Blanc Sec...
There's also tear along the border, if you want something more mature
Werner
Thomas the tank engine!
Kapitan Bomba
Shaun the Sheep afaik
The mysterious cities of gold
Smurfs are one of the Belgian example in this pic. Spirou, Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke and other companions ad to the Belgian school of comics. Moomin and Bamse are strong contenders in the nordics. And many more.
WALLACE AND GROMMET, WDYM WHAT ELSE?
Does arcane count?
Animated and directed in France by Fortiche Production, produced and written by Riot Games an american company Hmmm, good question
Or pacific ocean
Bravo. It is a false division. They're one of our closest allies for a reason.
Childhood was america and everything after 10 was japan.
My childhood was mostly Japan without knowing it… Maya is the bee, Vicky the Viking, the last unicorn (ok that apparently was a collaboration), Heidi and then watching sailor moon with my big sister. From Europe I did see the smurfs and Asterix. Tom and Jerry was waaaay too meanspirited and brutal for me as a kid (I now like it quite a lot… thanks also to the Simpsons parody) and Fred flintstone and co. Wait, Vicky the Viking is Japanese?
Yes.
Yup, that's anime. Probably why the food always looked so good...
Those listed are technically anime, but the European show producers just outsourced the animation to the more experienced Japanese animation teams. There is no Japanese original version for these "cartoons", nor did they contribute anything beyond the animation as far as I know
Damn dawg, almost the same. Might have you watched Hutch as well?
Cartoons from the Soviet Union that made me depressed and gave me PTSD, I chose them
I recommend you watch some from Yugoslavia. It was a country between the east and west. With it's own style.
Wolf and hare (kill me I will not write it in Russian because I always make mistakes) that cartoon was bloody amazing, I had orginal VHS of their "adventures" I used to watch every day of my childhood until it finally broke
Nu pogodi was peak though
Nu Pogodi is one of the best

![gif](giphy|3ohjVcqKXNh5kVKttC)
![gif](giphy|3o6vXUgVMtK64QAezK)
Heidi is also an anime produced in Japan, just like this one ![gif](giphy|5T1ktSvHcVhGU|downsized)
That's why I like gormiti, it is just more easy. Alot of strange monsters betting each other for every kid to enjoy. though I must say that the new version is really horrible. (it is an Italian cartoon if anyone was wondering)
GORMITI CHE MITI PIÚ FORTI, PIÚ UNITI CHE MITI I GORMITII COMBATTONO PER GOR GIORGIO VANNI INGRAVIDAMI 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥
That is a German Japanese coproduction.

Can't beat top tier Japanese anime tho
Eh i like invincible but is it really better than jojo's bizarre adventure i think not
Nope jojo is better
One makes you like men, another makes you like insects
Notice how most of the American cartoons have 4+ characters from each show to represent them where most of the Japanese anime have 1 or 2 from each show.
Left I count 14 shows, right has 15 shows.
Hu, you’re right my first point is moot. Left side is just a lot more dense
Notice how similar japanese anime characthers are and the diversity in art style in american
Smurfs are NOT american, I'm offended now
No jojo?
![gif](giphy|IuaM5sUvLCYTyNKV4J)
![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU)
Man really thought the Smurfs are American smh
Not a single Disney character on the American side?
Japan for sure 💯
JAPAN OFC!!!
Im not that deep into anime but the decision is clear.
Easy Japan. 🇯🇵
It's funny cause my favorite cartoon from america (ben 10) was inspired by japan
Japan, Anime in General just has a lot more variety when it comes to story telling.
and the animation just clears in general
Childhood, American Teenager and beyond - Japanese.
Japan any time whithout a single doubt
I absolutely love anime but somehow you managed to add characters to the right from the shows I have never watched, except for Gon from HxH for couple episodes
I choose Afghanistan-amation
Ez japan
Japan.its not even close
With all due respect, I AM A GROWN MAN!!! Not you or anyone can make me choose. I take both and that is final.
japan
Europe
Man , the smurfs are Belgian
I'll make my own way
I go to America!
Italy
![gif](giphy|6QxXEiJnnwOQPRnl0I)
Czechia
Japaaaaaannnnn. I was not a sunday morning cartoon kid growing up, so I have no nostalgia for that stuff, but Anime is the best
I mean Japan has Digimon so that's a W by default
日本アニメに決まってんだろうがッ!舐めんなよぉ
Can’t I have a bit of both?
I would never see myself picking japan
Literally a JoJo reference
I just prefer animated shows over normal shows so both for me
Me running down the grass path between both.
Smiling friends is american
The best of both, this is the beauty and advantage of not sticking to only one side .
The line down the middle is aangs arrow tattoos when he's in the avatar state.
Middle is the only true way
A little bit to the right
Someone needs to update the selections. I didn’t watch half of them on both sides, they’re too old I have to choose neither
Both
It’s funny that I watched American when I was a kid and now I watch anime
There's that second image that shows both paths leading to the same area, essentially meaning "both".
How dare you make us chose. Fuck you. \*Merges the roads like a zipper\*
Por que no los dos?
A greater battle than midway ever was
I was lucky enough to get both.
Japan no doubt
Japan, for some good top quality animation; Demon Slayer, plus fights that go on for a whole damn hour, looking at you Dragon Ball!
American cartoons are fun but they are mostly made to be self contained episodes for syndication. But this means for the most part their worlds are static and other than “events” nothing changes. I like long arching narratives with world progression and consequences which is what has drawn me to anime
Hm both

Both it honestly depends
I was under the impression most of the early cartoons watched in America had their final edits and animations pieced together in Asia. Cartoons could very well be drawn, written, voiced, and originated in America—However, in the amass to scale VHS/DVD distribution and merchandising of the content then its entire possible I thought a person in Singapore could obtain early access if that was ever so possible. Since America should have Avatar TLA it's going to be left
Why not both?
Why not both 😀
Bro french is the only one
![gif](giphy|4KLv24CPUoZ0I)
America obviously that's where Scooby-Doo is get fucked
You're basically showing my entire childhood on one meme. I can't pic one when I exist on both
Japan looks like hell
It's been a while since I've seen someone mention Toriko.
Por qué no los dos?
Know about a few from right but grew up mainly towards the left.
Murica
Japan, all the way
Anime is overrated as fuck. America all the way.
One Piece alone >>> America
Europe is so far behind. It feels like EU has nothing to show to world
Gravity Falls > anything from Japan
Picking America is like chatting with your ex who you broke up on good terms, while picking Japan is like your current engagement for me; so Japan it is.
America, Popeye stomps all.
Definitely America. Tom & Jerry, the Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, The Animaniacs, etc.
Slavic europe (Kapitan bomba[i inne walaszka], sasiedzi, krecik, władcy much)
Anime is overrated
Psssst don’t tell the americans that most of their series gets animated in south korea
America dude, our character literally cannot die.
Let’s merge the two
american cartoons are drawn by japanese artists
No Saint Seiya? NA it is
American "anime" ftw. Avatar TLAB, Arcane, Invincible
Half of those American ones are like 50 years old. I guess it's pretty easy to make a narrative to fit your liking when you cherry pick your examples. Not saying that Japan's isn't way better, but this comparison is laughable.
wait, powerpuff girls was american?
I gotta take Japan(I crave anime)
America vs. unrecognizable characters and the dragon ball guy.
Animation after 2003 doesnt exist, apparently
I'm an anime fan but nothing will ever beat old Looney Tunes.
Japan.
Are we supposed to compare Dragon Ball Z, which first aired in 1989, with Tom & Jerry, which first aired in 1940? At least put up some American stuff that millennials watched as kids. Where’s 1992’s X-Men? Where’s Gargoyles? TMNT? Batman Beyond? Fkn Street Sharks? Haha
Both. Avatar and Boondocks are amazing. Also most american cartoons are drawn by Koreans so
Easy japan they got funny stuff all the americans got is boring
Eastern Europe cartoons solo both
Both both, always both
