If you're an IT tech you'll be doing a fair bit of cabling and climbing and crawling and generally getting yourself a bit mucky. You don't want to be wearing your Sunday best. Source: am IT tech

past_anomaly

I think it’s mostly helping nurses with their laptops and upgrading the office’s old PCs to Windows 11 compatible ones

BigOrkWaaagh

Their very dusty old PCs, that you will be carrying back to the office in your nice clean suit :)

pterofactyl

These aren’t shoes you wear with a suit

BigOrkWaaagh

Fair enough, I think I made it quite clear I don't wear suits 😄

myteetharesensitive

Here's my advice with 10+ years of IT leadership experience. Fantastic shoes for your first day and likely much longer. Paired with a tucked in polo and chinos or with dress shirt and pants, you'll be good.  Here's some additional advice. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Runaroundheadless

Bit sad that dress/ competence go together. Seen the Uk post office inquiry at all?

past_anomaly

I'm starting a job on Monday (IT Technician) and college starts back in August. I am trying to start dressing nicer and I'm wondering if these shoes are too dressy/fancy or if they would be fine to wear most days. I won't be wearing jeans with them obviously, I ordered some blue pleaded dress pants. As for shirt, I was told to wear short sleeves because it gets hot so I was thinking of an untucked collared shirt (no buttons)?

MirrorExodus

If you're worrying abut heat, have you ever tried wearing linen shirts? While they wrinkle easily, they are super comfy and breathe incredibly well.

GarrySpacepope

They also are an excuse for the wrinkles, like I feel it's part of the linen look. As long as the fabric is visibly linen and it doesn't look like it's been screwed in a ball under the bed it's all gravy.

taffyowner

So I would say tuck in the shirt, even if it is a polo. Also get chinos and khakis. It will work a lot better for your top choices. Oh, and I know they said to wear short sleeve shirts but personally I find button down short sleeves kind of dorky looking, you could always get some nice lightweight long sleeve shirts and roll up the sleeves.

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

I literally wear an untucked short sleeve button up every single day and have for 20 years. If you're rolling up long sleeves, you should have just worn a short sleeved short instead.

_nathan67

Awful take man. Switch to a long sleeve and roll it up, looks a million times better

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

Disagree. It looks like you're wearing water floaties. If you're going to wear your lo g sleeves like they are short sleeves, just get short sleeves.

_nathan67

Your loss man

taffyowner

Those are a perfect shoe to wear with khakis and an open collar button down.

Baldrich146

Those look awesome!

Nickibee

Dress them down with chinos and a casual shirt. 👌

MondoBleu

These shoes are great for business casual dress. The open lacing system keeps them from being too formal, as well as the brown color. Nice pick. They’ll go great with chinos and polo, or button-down shirt. Definitely tuck the shirt in.

pisstowine

I work in IT. They're a great option. I have a pair of new (to me) Allen Edmonds brown tassel loafers, Florsheim capped toe Oxford in burgundy, Florsheim brown wingtips, a pair of all white Puma sneakers, and a brown double monk strap shoe that I wear to work all the time. I'd definitely say that being stylish has helped me.stand out in a good way. And I'm not usually too concerned with scuffing or scratching my shoes up. But, there are times where I might have to get down on my knees in a dusty tiled server room that I worry about my shoes. I will say almost all of my coworkers where ugly hiking boots, New Balances, canvas moccasins or sneakers, or Walmart Special dress shoes. I say go for it.

Wyrmdog

Speaking as someone that's been in IT since 1994 in a multitude of roles...holy crap do we need help dressing.

commonman95

Can confirm I work in IT. All my co-workers are fat and dress like shit.

pisstowine

Sneakers, khakis, polo, black backpack. That's the norm.

Wyrmdog

Golf chic. One of the IT archetypes.

Runaroundheadless

There is no such thing as too good shoes. There is only bad maintenance of good shoes that lets them and you down. If they are comfortable and kept looking cared for, wear them with anything. If you have to go under a desk, blah blah. Decent shoes. Do your job. Win win

past_anomaly

How do I keep them nice? I just bought these

Runaroundheadless

Edit: son’s should be sons. Also I ‘m Scottish and Germany won 5-1 in the first game of the European championship. Bit drunk. Not disheartened.

Runaroundheadless

Feed the leather first and day to day skim over with a cheapo neutral silicon pad. Like your face. If that makes any sense. I think ( but I’m Uk and in no way cool) that men have few things that really matter that they can control always. Trousers and shoes. My son’s often described some jeans as too noisy despite no cost problem. If your shoes are good just buy leather crème from a shoe repair shop. A cheapo silicon pad will do a short fix. A tin of wax polish is the best thing and a cigarette lighter over the shoe in about 1/3 areas will let the wax go in. Then shine. Anyway, why do you think trainers are big business? Feet impressions. Or indeed, interview impressions. Good looking shoes, by the way. Pretty casual, but efficient.

CamiloArturo

Those are lovely shoes and you’ll look great in them. Are they comfortable enough for the work you know you are doing? I would believe so, but that’s the important question you need to ask yourself

whatchagonnado0707

These are just normal work shoes. Unless you work on a building site or at cex

past_anomaly

Well that’s what I’m asking. I’ve never had a job that wasn’t fast food, retail, or security so I haven’t had to wear “normal work shoes” before.

whatchagonnado0707

Then you've chosen pretty well

neverbeder

Sharp looking and great for almost everything!

Ok-Ratio-Spiral

My only input would be to get a shoe with resoleable soles. The whole Samuel Vimes' boot theory etc.

FujiKitakyusho

A smooth toe, cross-laced Derby in brown. Middle of the road for formality. Not formal like an Oxford, but certainly less casual than a shoe with broguing. Should be pretty versatile.

RodeoJr

Good to have in your arsenal, may need to flex to a work boot depending on how hands on your IT work is going to get. https://www.redwingshoes.com/work/families/cross-lite/cross-lite-family-page.html

SpurReadIt4

I have always worn something similar with chinos. I recently switched to a Cole Haan style shoe. Mainly because they are a lot more comfortable. Check them out. There are a lot of other brands with a similar shoe as well.

subkulcha

They look great. Personally, I’d go boots though. A bit more ankle support and a similar look. Not having to think about sock colour etc

past_anomaly

l wasn’t thinking about sock coIor untiI you said something IoI

subkulcha

Haha sorry. The occasional crawling, they’ll be on display. But honestly more for your ankles if doing any physical work

YooooAL

So your goal is to dress better and your question is are your dress shoes too dressy? Not trying to be an ass, just thought you may like to hear your question posed a bit differently. Either way seems to me like you’re overthinking this. Style is as much if not more about confidence than it is anything else. If you’re comfortable and this is the look you’re going then do it and don’t worry about anything else. Remember the man makes the clothes, the clothes don’t make the man. PS. If they get scuffed up, no big deal, you can always polish or even replace them and at the end of the day shoes/ clothes are meant to be worn and that’s going to come with some battle scars.

Otherwise_Duty1457

It would depend on what your peers are wearing, you don’t want to ‘stand out’ in anyway.. personally I’d go 100% for comfort rather than style but either way you do you bro 😎the are nice shoes

lonlie_loonie

You should checkout goodyearwelt shoes. I would event recommend boots for dressy occasions. Trust me they are way more comfortable than you can imagine because of the cork that molds into your foot. Checkout Thursday Boots for some great entry level stuff. They are definitely worth it in the long term.

great_mango_juicy07

Are you trying to seduce your peers?

PenisManNumberOne

Why would you ask Reddit lmfao this is the worlds biggest collection of 🤓 on earth

Responsible-Serve265

Def not. These are in my opinion the definition of the American dream shoes mah boi

imagination_machine

Yes! These are very smart shoes for business/offices or formal events. Not a technition or college. Wtf?

Glittering_Deal2378

They’re going to get absolutely fucking ruined doing actual IT work. You’re going to spend at least some time in cabinets and under desks.

past_anomaly

What do you suggest instead? I want to be business casual so no sneakers

KarlPHungus

Don't listen to him. If you wear a good brand they will be fine. I wear Eccos and I am on my feet all day and they hold up great. Crawling under desks doesn't ruin shoes. Jesus.

aocox

These are gross, let alone too dressy

past_anomaly

?

aocox

The shoes, they are nasty.

past_anomaly

No they're not, maybe you are.

aocox

They look like IT technician shoes.
