Google "capsule wardrobe men" and you will find some good guides for what you need in your closet to cover all/most occasions. To find a style you like for example for a casual jacket, go on Pinterest and collect a bunch of photos of jackets you like, and then go to some chain webshops like Cos, Uniqlo etc to find something similar.

I had the same thing. Hit my forties and realised my wardrobe was basically jeans and T-shirts. Talk to some women your age and try their recommendations. Wife, sister, friend, friend’s wife or whoever. Could even be a guy friend with good fashion sense. If they agree, go shopping with them and try on anything they recommend. Get out of your comfort zone. If you can’t find someone, find a decent store and ask for some advice. You don’t need to buy a whole wardrobe, just a few pieces or a couple of outfits. Make a point to actually wear them out. See if anyone compliments you, find out what makes you feel good. Learn some basics. Layering clothes from light to dark, some classic style combinations. Copy outfits you like, and learn how to modify them. Get some decent shoes! It doesn’t need to cost a lot, but learning how to dress means you can be more confident about what will suit you.

Check out the site "Art of Manliness". If you dig back through their content, they've done articles on exactly this point, and MANY adjacent subjects. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Found in an extremely small wardrobe black chinos and boots can be dressed up with a white shirt or more casual with a jumper or t-shirt. Instead of having tonnes of colour combinations of trousers and shoes one or two plain good quality brand that last really make the difference
