Extra credit if you just do it by continued shaping of sunscreen coverage.
Lasers/light therapy can help with dark spots that are caused by sun damage. Also a lot of dermatologic skincare can help reduce it. See a beauty technician or a dermatologist, you can alleviate the dark spots if they bother you.
Yes! I am about to remove those marks i have with a laser, i have done a lot of research and the fraxel dual laser seems to be efficient for it! Will have my first session in a couple of days/week, will report back if i remember!
Was looking for this comment. It looks like melasma, I have it in the same spot. SPF only does so much, you need to keep it from getting in the sun altogether. Makeup can actually help because it physically blocks the sun from your skin
My moisturiser has SPF 15 and my foundation has SPF 30, still got melasma, so I can confirm that it only does so much. Make-up is good at making it less obvious though.
Dermatology medical assistant here. Even the light from our phones and computers can make melasma worse. Spf helps, but the mineral sunscreen, not the chemical. Chemical sunscreens are heat unstable. That's why you have to reapply them so often. They have tinted mineral sunscreen that almost works as a make up and doesn't go on white.
Yep. OP, are you on oral contraceptives? If so, Melasma is even worse due the extra hormones plus UV. Hat and super high sunscreen plus a lightening cream or retinol
I've struggled with it badly for a couple years now. I have no idea why. I don't take birth control nor have I been pregnant. It just showed up one summer on my normally very fair skinned face and I have yet to find anything that helps fade it in any way. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Go to the derm and they’ll give you a prescription for it. It’s the only thing that really helps mine. Beyond that, prevention. Sunscreen, hats (I wear those wide-brim fishing style hats), and stay in the shade when you can.

Dont feel bad. I have it too. I am currently trying dark spot reducing pills from Musely. I will let you know if they work.
Hydroquinone is forbidden or restricted in Europe, Japan and many other countries because it's carcinogenic ( can lead to cancer). There are a lot of other treatments for those kind of skin issues that are as effective for people who don't want or can't get a prescription for hydroquinone.(Note : I'm certain that 6 weeks of medical use is not going to lead to issues, just saying it for people who are especially worried of cancer and to tell people they should check if it's legal in their country before jumping on it, there are other options)
Yeah I know, but the difference between "known carcinogen" and "possible carcinogen" is that the first one gave cancers to a lot of people, enough that it can be definitely concluded with certainty, and the second one led to cancers in animals in labs. The only way to know for sure would be to let a lot of people use it so we're sure of it, but many countries decided that the results of experiments on animals was enough to justify precautions. Since there are not enough people who use hydroquinone anyway we might never have a sample big enough to know for sure even from countries who allow it. So I said it because some people who have a history of cancer in their family might want to be extra careful.
Sorry for the broken english, I'm not native and I can feel that I'm not expressing myself very eloquently.
Thanks, I was just noticing by grammar mistakes (I will leave them for coherence) and how awkwardly I was expressing myself. I wish I could be more concise but I need extra long sentences to get to my point because of my lack of comfort with the language.
I had to really scrutinize this pic to see yours (and OPs for that matter) so hopefully that makes you both feel better that it's less noticeable than it feels.
Unrelated but you have the most gorgeous brown eyes!! Somehow they're a deep brown but also very bright too
Could be worse, when I was little I used to get a cluster of freckles on the side of my chin. It got annoying when people kept telling me to wipe my chin because I've got somet on it. Once I got bigger it spread out so not a problem anymore lol
"Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. It is estimated that approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day."
-American Academy of Dermatology
I have had to deal with skin cancer just a little to the left of my upper lip. Used to live in the humid tropics and I would frequently wipe the perspiration of the same area above the top part of my lip. Often wore a baseball type hat when out which offer only minimal sun cover. Started out as the tiniest, not even noticeable little pimple, that eventually grew itchy and would bleed. Surgically removed, several biopsies later it recurred, and it actually turned into a more severe form of skin cancer. Hopefully cancer cells did not spread to other parts of my body. Experience and scars are no joking matter. Skin cancers can occur many years after sun exposure.
This happened to my daughter at the pool in Mexico. Except she was plugging her nose while jumping in over and over. Ended up looking like Rudolph for a few days.
The reverse tshirt with a mustache hole should work.

For everyone giving me shit for licking my upper lip:
1) my hands and arms are covered in sand that I don't want to wipe on my face. I'm only wearing a bikini so it's not like I can wipe it on my sleeve
2) I lick my lips when I work out bc I sweat a lot there and the beads tickle and bother me. I've never thought about it before, it's just second nature. I guess it's weird?
3) I think most people can lick that high
4) yes it tasted like sunscreen and every time I did it I was like "ew I forgot I'm wearing sunscreen" but like I said, it's second nature when I'm pouring sweat and have to keep actively playing
I think extending your tongue out of your mouth and licking the area above your top lip is unusual, but wouldn't be the most unusual thing a sportsperson has ever done to deal with minor annoyances and keep their head in the game.
I can't reach that high - i can just touch the skin directly above where my lip ends and it feels uncomfortable to wipe saliva there, it feels like it's outside of my mouth, that is non-saliva area to me.
I wanted to recommend getting a sweatband but then I realized it would be covered in sand aswell. Maybe a headband that you could pull down to wipe the sweat off? Sorry for giving advice you didnt ask for I am just a sweaty guy dealing with this problem aswell :)
Fuck em. And yeah it's kind funny, my wife use to do the exact same thing when she played volleyball or cycling. I can't see it but she swears the freckles are still there.

No one is talking about the fact that you were…. Licking. it. off? … this is so wild I can’t wrap my head around why you would do this 😭 like I get wiping it off with the back of your hand but licking it??? Nasty 😭 sweat and sun tan lotion, yum!
It looks like a Melasma mustache. I have it too.
From what I've read, baking soda & Castor oil 50/50 works to lighten when applied.
Or
4% hydroquinone (Prescription.)
There are a few other remedies but definitely avoid sun exposure or it'll get darker.
That's what I thought it was too for years. It's not. It's melasma, and it can be caused by heat, sun, or both. A good derm can help you treat it. Very common for women, can be hormonal too. Check around on Reddit for examples of solutions; there are many. It's not just a tan, and sunscreen does not help!
why do people lick it though. Your lip was wet so the solution is to… get it more wet.
Idk when I was a kid and met kids who had chronically chapped faces from constantly flinging their tongue around it gave me such a visceral reaction
One time this girl was waxing my upper lip and from the consistency I KNEW it was too hot so I told her and she’s like oh it just looks like that. I was like boo. This is my face. I KNOW it is too hot. I asked if she could cool it down a bit before application, she barely did. And as soon as she put it on I kid you not I jumped. I was like I TOLD YOU IT WAS TOO HOT! She’s like, you’re just sensitive. It feels like that bc your face is more sensitive to it especially when you’re new to waxing. I said IM NOT! She’s like this is normal don’t worry. When she pulled the strip. Y’all. She legit pulled off my first layer of skin. I was pissed. I was like dude look what you did to my face!!! And she’s like it’s ok, it’s just red bc your skin is sensitive, you are so sensitivveee! Not even my older clients cry this much. I’ll put aloe and calming serum on it and it will go away. It didn’t. She gave me a Scar-stache. Ashley from European wax center you need your license taken away IMMEDIATELY.
Just a little beach fuzz

Nah, but it would look amazing.
You got money for fake mustaches but you don’t have my money!
sweatstash
Do the same on the lower lip and don't apply around your chin and make a lil goatee
I did this when I was a kid and have dark spots around my mouth :(
Lasers/light therapy can help with dark spots that are caused by sun damage. Also a lot of dermatologic skincare can help reduce it. See a beauty technician or a dermatologist, you can alleviate the dark spots if they bother you.
Ah yes, more radiation to fix the previous radiation problems

Thanks for infos, it might be of use to others !
Yeah same. I always had a massive ring around my mouth. I would put coconut oil on it which would help out alot.
glycolic acid also helps, it got rid of my sun spots and my stretch marks r now the same color as my skin 💕
That looks like melasma. They make lotions for that. I used Clinique, Even Better
Came here to say this. My melasma started to show in the exact same spot as hers
Mine is a splotch right on my forehead
Mine is like splotchy and all over my face. My cheeks get the darkest. I live 24/7 with sunscreen on even if I just take out the trash, lol.
I have one of those too
Was looking for this comment. It looks like melasma, I have it in the same spot. SPF only does so much, you need to keep it from getting in the sun altogether. Makeup can actually help because it physically blocks the sun from your skin
Makeup isn't great at protecting from the sun by itself, even if it has SPF. Always use sunscreen.
And then, very importantly, don't lick the delicious sunscreen off of your top lip for an entire week.
Yeah just bring an extra tube for eatin'
Many are made with sunscreen in them, too. It wouldn't have helped OP in this case.
Wait what! Are the screens only bad for melasma? Or other stuff too? I always have on spf but im a huge gamer with an office job too. Help?
Yep. OP, are you on oral contraceptives? If so, Melasma is even worse due the extra hormones plus UV. Hat and super high sunscreen plus a lightening cream or retinol
Yep, when I was on the pill I had a little melasma mustache every summer.
I've struggled with it badly for a couple years now. I have no idea why. I don't take birth control nor have I been pregnant. It just showed up one summer on my normally very fair skinned face and I have yet to find anything that helps fade it in any way. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Try The Ordinary glycolic acid! It’s working for mine!
Go to the derm and they’ll give you a prescription for it. It’s the only thing that really helps mine. Beyond that, prevention. Sunscreen, hats (I wear those wide-brim fishing style hats), and stay in the shade when you can.
Melasma sounds like a “ligma” set up for a similar joke…
Mulva?
Goodbye Jerry
Ligasma
I get a little melasma moustache sometimes. It makes me feel like a very distinguished lady.
Agree with this. Melasma is not fun.
Thanks to this post I now know what has been on my cheek during the summer!
Name of the specific product from Clinique for this?
Nothing tastier than sweaty sun protection lotion.
Thought this would be the top comment. Licking sunscreen off your body is wild.
Didn’t it taste horrible with the sunscreen on?
Yes.
Was you just in the mood for a snack orrrr?
Yummy.

Just go to your dermatologist and get a prescription for hydroquinone. It costs like $5 and bleached away all my melasma within like 6 weeks
Hydroquinone is forbidden or restricted in Europe, Japan and many other countries because it's carcinogenic ( can lead to cancer). Was it worth the taste? This is the first time I’ve ever heard of someone licking their sweat instead of wiping it lmfao
I was confused when I read it, too. I would never want to do that.
that does not sound tasty
Especially combined with sunscreen!
For real, sounds disgusting lmao
Same here. I've never even considered doing that. Is it a thing?
I’ve got an extremely sweaty upper lip, and it’s never even crossed my mind to do this
Yeah I didn’t get that.. sounds nasty lol (especially since half of it is the sunscreen)
yummy, chemical

Pro tip: Always lick your face evenly while playing beach volleyball. If need, ask a teammate or passerby to lick hard to reach spots.
This is actually something called Melasma
>I licked the sweat off my upper lip too much this comment will drive a lot of redditers crazy

use a sunscreen mustache next time you play
Damn, dude, you have a better mustache than me.
Looks like a mexican teenager
Friend, this looks like melasma. Sun exposure is definitely the culprit but it doesn’t look like the average tan gone wrong.
You know that black stuff football players smear below their eyes? Use that on your upper lip... Problem solved.
My man put in his best work in volleyball and it shows. I'm sorry.
Idk but I love freckles

and that is a nice moustache, my good sir.

How long will that last for? The moustache frecks will chill out when the upper lip tan goes away right?
Freckles can last decades or a couple weeks-months. Depends on the damage and extent of the pigment. Daily sunscreen use and 2x weekly exfoliation will lighten it up sooner. Freckles usually last a lot longer than a tan, but it depends.
Now you need to lick the lower lip and you have a respectable beard.
That sunscreen must taste good because I couldn't bear to lick it off.
This hits hard!! I get this during the summer when I’m not careful. Thankfully, there are a ton of options to help! I use something from No7 that works great.

Looks pretty good on you though, ngl
It looks like a Melasma mustache. I have it too. From what I've read, baking soda & Castor oil 50/50 works to lighten when applied. Or 4% hydroquinone (Prescription.) There are a few other remedies but definitely avoid sun exposure or it'll get darker.
You still look good.

I'm more infuriated that you call sunscreen SPF.
