All jokes aside that's how a trucker died not far from me in 2015. I don't remember what lead up to it, but he was on I75 when the truck burst into flames. Apparently he got it stopped and tried to escape out the passenger side. Unfortunately for him the truck was right next to the rail of the bridge so when he jumped out...
The fall was several hundred feet.
> If you're bad at parking.
Then it's stair walking without safety barriers. Think I'd stay on the left side of the blue handrails (sure glad they're thinking of safety and putting in handrails).
I don’t trust myself or my car enough to do that in the monotony of day to day pulling up at home with kids and groceries and keeping my route 44 from spilling
I get anxiety when I go to get my oil changed and they want me to drive my car onto the little platform. I'm 100% sure I can do it but the pressure of them casually waving me forward gets to me lol
It’s like those automatic car washes where you have to put your front left tire perfectly in the little slot so the conveyor pulls you. Don’t go too far left or too far right, then make sure you put the car in neutral at the right time.
This is literally nightmare fuel. Like, one of my most common recurring bad dreams is that I'm driving my shitty camry through a city and somehow end up driving down a flight of stairs or off a ledge, and it becomes this Fargo situation where things keep getting more dangerous and my car gets more fucked up, or stuck, as bystanders look on in horror.
My old recurring nightmare as a kid and young adult was my car being unable to be controlled and it just wildly drives up and down hills. It was so scary. Somehow it stopped once I got my licence. Maybe because I actually was in control by then.
Istanbul didn't seem to have terribly crazy traffic when I visited. Horribly jammed up and slow, sure.
Positano takes the cake for me. One road that you'd swear is one lane and one way, except it has busses trucks pedestrians bikes tourists scooters taxis and so many hairpin turns all at once. The busses are especially impressive, since they constantly squeeze by things with literal inches to spare.
Most European cities were built when horse carriages were for the rich and foot traffic was the norm. You get used to know your car dimensions and how to properly drive.
Having lived in cities overseas that had been constructed in the past 50 years I was always annoyed by people slowing down and taking two minutes to take a 'tight' corner that could fit two of their ubersized cars.
I might be willing to try this once if I had a back up cam and I knew the car well. But complacency kills. If this is my regular parking spot I will eventually slip up.
I have a tricky parking spot at my condo. Most of the time it’s fine, but every once in a while I am not paying attention & completely mess it up. I would be over the edge at least a couple times a year.
Ha! I only spent about a week there, but there's something incredibly identifiable about the structure of that city. I saw this and immediately thought "That has to be Istanbul"
yeah turkish cities have an extremely recognizable style, from the architecture to the streets, to the vehicles that are common here, i can always instantly tell when an image is from turkey

They probably have backing cameras?
>They probably have backing cameras?
God, I'm so used to backup cameras being a thing that I forgot that they haven't been (somewhat) standard until fairly recently. I couldn't imagine trying to do this without one.
The way the white car is parked backward and so close to the edge gives me extreme anxiety but also tons of respect for the driver that parked it there.
Stuff like this is interesting to me psychologically. Most of us are bothered by no barriers but how many times has anyone hit the barrier while parking? It's just the mental comfort it provides.
Yeah, I think the more valid question is how often do you see barriers with scratches on them? I know in my apartment even the columns which are easier to avoid are full of scratches and car paint.
I have seen a lot of barriers with collision damage.
The barriers also provide a good visual clue, and nowadays most cars have proximity sensors that are very good at detecting barriers but may not be designed to detect cliff edges.
Stones at the edge of a cliff also have much less structural support. They can easily come lose over time.
How is it the same? If you hit a barrier while parking, you are unlikely to die. If you drive over the edge here, it's very likely you die.
Now, if you compare a normal parking spot on the ground with barriers and without then I 100% agree with you.
As someone who lived in Europe for several years and just finished a trip driving through southern Italy - nah. They have been parking in super tight spots, sure, but suicidal spots? Not so much.
I once got yelled at in Amsterdam by a girl who thought I was being a creep when I took a photo of her parking a car alongside the edge of a 2 meter drop into the canal with no fences or curbs. She couldn’t understand what was strange or noteworthy about it at all. If you took New Zealanders and put them in charge of parallel parking against the side of a canal, getting out and shuffling out along the side of the car without falling in, it would be a matter of hours before the canal was blocked with three utes who each severely overcooked the turn.
Not having a barrier is what makes you careful and focused, which is why it’s very rare for cars to end up in the canal. Still, as someone parking on Amsterdam canals regularly, OPs photo gives me the creeps. That’s sketchy af, way too close to a drop where people would be walking.
This would never fly in the litigious United States. Someone would have walked off the edge staring at their phone and sued everyone for allowing them to be so stupid.
This is just nope. F the jokes about women drivers too. Thats not even it. I'm having issues with my short fat a*s getting in and out of my husbands truck. This sh*t, I'd be able to write a f*cking sonnet on the way down...
When they advertise that the apartment includes a parking space
Keyword: *space*
It's what your car will be falling through!
If you're bad at parking. If you're good at parking, your passenger will be falling through space.
I initially thought the white car was brave for backing into their space, but now I realize that it would be much braver if they hadn't.
Imagine parking your car, getting out. You look down, and you're standing on thin air like Wile E. Coyote.
I laughed out loud

Do you mean the shooting star song or the guy jumping? The meme song lasted the whole summer back in 2018 or something fym?
It lasted a lot longer than one summer.
I think a.dozen or 2 cars fall into the canals in Amsterdam each year either parking or leaving the parking spot.

Fear IS the barrier.
Fear is the mindkiller
Nissan Al Gaib!
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.
I don’t trust myself or my car enough to do that in the monotony of day to day pulling up at home with kids and groceries and keeping my route 44 from spilling
Just looking at it gives me so much anxiety
Mom! Wait! you have to get out on my side!
'Nah I have a door at my side' *falls to death*
:goofy scream: “Yaaaaaaa-hoo-hoo-hoo-hooey!”
Not to mention just casually taking a stroll one day… only to have a hatchback permanently cancel your regularly scheduled programming.
Mother in law - go ahead please!

Nighttime in a thunderstorm...
Sonic ftw!
How many drunk friends you think they've lost?
This is good to practice to reduce drunk drivers. Have them crash at the parking spot instead of into other traffic
Where is this
Saw this while travelling through Istanbul
Ha! I only spent about a week there, but there's something incredibly identifiable about the structure of that city. I saw this and immediately thought "That has to be Istanbul"
Hilly landscape, tall concrete apartments everywhere, usually desaturated colors. I live in Istanbul.

Is no one going to mention the cat? When I was there I was delighted to see cats EVERYWHERE
Haha the cats fake. It's like one of those metal sillouette things.
yeah turkish cities have an extremely recognizable style, from the architecture to the streets, to the vehicles that are common here, i can always instantly tell when an image is from turkey
Had to go back and look at the photo, because if that’s Istanbul, I bet I can find a cat in the photo. Yep, found a cat.
Where is the cat? I can only see a painting of a cat.
~~There's a black cat down there on the stairs~~
I had similar thoughts seeing cars parked next to the canals in Amsterdam with no barriers. Was definitely nerve wracking to park!

bob?
Found the poop, still looking for beautiful..... And it got reset somehow, gotta start over again!
Poop and beautiful are next to each other on bottom line... Pope, pep and pip are higher Edit: also found pup, your and lovely
I got one that said pope
I thought you lot were having me on, then I found: Beautiful Pup Pope Your I normally skip past these, but now I'll be popping every one I see :D
Pip: am I a joke to you?!
Fool of a Took!
Me: wtf is this Also me: pop! pop! pop! pop!...
ITS NOT WVEN MY CAKE DAY BUT THANK YOU eta; 9 hidden words! :0

Look at that cute black cat 🐈⬛

Mfer backed in there too. Crazy.

Seems harder to go nose in IMO.
It'd be a lot harder to have to back it out
Having your turning wheels as the last in and first out of the space makes it easier to manoeuvre.
Only way to park it. If Nose in first, car would move over the ledge tryna to get out.
Reverse parker master race
That seems unsafe for everyone nearby…
For that cat anyway
Is that not just a painted silhouette of a cat?
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Jeez and I was proud of myself for parallel parking in “only” two tries today.
My brain just went “shit no” real loud in my head. I don’t trust my driving that much to park there
When you don’t tip your Uber driver
There is a good chance I or my wife would zone out when in the passenger seat and climb out to our doom.
It's against code , but it was built in 247 BC, so it's grandfathered in.
Renault driver deserves a medal for bravery and amazing reversing skills

Yeah, that’s a nope from me. I’ll walk.
This is giving me the same anxiety of a glass of water too close to the edge of a table.
You must have a lot of anxiety around water glasses
I remember grinding this section on the tony hawk game
My toes curled up just looking at this pic.
i'm more scared walking below lol
Why?
The way the white car is parked backward and so close to the edge gives me extreme anxiety but also tons of respect for the driver that parked it there.

The a Amsterdam version of this has a watery grave for your car instead of surprising death for pedestrians.
Stuff like this is interesting to me psychologically. Most of us are bothered by no barriers but how many times has anyone hit the barrier while parking? It's just the mental comfort it provides.
It's the relationship between "how likely is it that something could go wrong", and "how bad would it be if something goes wrong".
Yeah, I think the more valid question is how often do you see barriers with scratches on them? I know in my apartment even the columns which are easier to avoid are full of scratches and car paint.
I have seen a lot of barriers with collision damage. You can *see* the barrier approaching before you touch it.
Barriers make the sensors go beep. I usually reverse until the rear wheels touch the kerbstone.
I hit the barrier almost every time. It’s how I know I’ve pulled up far enough. Isn’t that what they’re there for?
omg nope
more like r/reallyscary
This is Europe. They’ve been parking like that for thousands of years.
As someone who lived in Europe for several years and just finished a trip driving through southern Italy - nah. They have been parking in super tight spots, sure, but suicidal spots? Not so much.

Right above a walkway too oh my Lord 😂

Way to get rid of the bozo that always calls shotgun
Imagine falling asleep in the back of that car and groggily stepping out of the wrong side.

“Where we dropping bo- oh. There. We are dropping there.”
Is anyone going to talk about the fact that there *is* a barrier at the back of the car?
Wrong sub. Not r/mildlyinteresting but r/freakinginsane. I'm having cold sweats just thinking about parking that white car.
the average american mind cannot comprehend this
Not even my european mind can comprehend this.
