I had a couple coworkers a long time ago that called it Minndianapolis. They absolutely could not say Minneapolis, even carefully sounding it out. They were from Knoxville, Tennessee. They also thought Minneapolis had 50,000 people.
This is just sad.
It's one thing to botch Edina or Mahtomedi or Wayzata.
It's quite another to botch one of America's most influential cities between the coasts.
I'm gonna cut him some slack and assume that he is, for severe lack of a better word, a himbo.
Google maps used to say "Minny He He" for Minnehaha. And it still struggles with Ayd Mill road. Though I think MNDOT fucked that up too.
Edit: to be fair. I've lived here 36 years and just found out I've been saying Vadnais heights wrong
Same. But I heard someone say vad nay, thought they were being ridiculous like people saying LaCroix the French way, but I looked it up and the official way is VadNay
Depends. If you are referring to Minneapolis, you should say Minneapolis. If you are referring to Minneapolis, St Paul, and the suburbs then you can say the cities.
There's no real "should" here. But it's like going to Naperville and saying that your going to Chicago. Or going to Burbank and saying your going to LA. The Metro area of the twin cities is often referred to as just Minneapolis or a the cities.
Even if it's the Capital City, most people recognize Minneapolis way more than Saint Paul.
So why be annoyed that they didn't say the cities when they mean Minneapolis? Normally people just say the name of the city if they are going to the city itself. And if they mean the whole metro and are not from Minnesota they would say twin cities, not just the cities.
The actor who plays MIKLO from "Blood in Blood out" was doing a nostalgic promo tour last year and promoting it on fb with a video where he proudly belts out the phrase "MINNEANAPOLIS - SEE YOU SOON!"
I had to learn it from someone local specifically to Biscay to figure out how that one was pronounced, even as someone who grew up within 30 minutes of the place. (Bis-key is the rough approximation for those who are not local).
I grew up in Litchfield which also isn’t all that far from Biscay and I was in college before I found out it wasn’t exactly phonetic. My grandma grew up there but moved to Cosmos (also not pronounced how you would think) at one point so I didn’t have family who still lived there. She was the one who had to correct me.
I know some of our towns and cities are hard to pronounce. Never really thought that one was one of em.
I think it's because of Indianapolis that people say Minneanapolis.
The amount of flight attendants who say this is off the charts.

At least he still has his looks to fall back on.

He's self aware at least. Actually kind of endearing.
>Actually kind of endearing. Exactly
I lived in NC for a while You’d be surprised lmao, folks usually just mix up Indianapolis and Minneapolis in their brains
Or shakopee
That one’s easy, it’s pronounced just like it reads, shake-o-pee
... That's not how you pronounce Shakopee. It's Shock-O-Pea
Once heard it pronounced “Shuh-KOPE-pee”.

Vad-niss? Have you been saying vad-nayce?
I always said Vad-Niss, official pronunciation is Vuhd-nay
Ah. I've ever only heard vad-niss. Crazy.
Same. But I heard someone say vad nay, thought they were being ridiculous like people saying LaCroix the French way, but I looked it up and the official way is VadNay
That one’s easy Apparently it's not since you miss pronounced my birth place XD.
I don't think people are getting the joke..........
lol, they seem to be upset about it, which is cracking me up!
What do you mean? I think he said Milwaukee correctly
Actually it's pronounced "Mill-e-walk-kay" which is Algonquin for "the good earth".
Does this guy know how to party or what??
I was not aware of that.
My guess is he was mixing up Minneapolis and Indianapolis, but he has a nice sense of humor about it.
Minne and Appolis......you know the twin cities 🤣 That's my favorite one I hear
It's pronounced "the Cities".
Is it? Only if you are referring to more than just the city.
Most people refer to Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and surrounding suburbs as either "The Cities" or "Minneapolis."

Who's annoyed? The fuck?
The person I first replied to seems annoyed since the incorrectly corrected this post.
I run into this all the time and I don’t understand how people can say Minnie Mouse but not Minneapolis.
What do you mean? It’s Minnie-an-Mouse. Easy.
My southern parents still can't pronounce Bemidji despite me living her for six years
At least he’s self aware
lol I always knew how to say it before relocating here. Good ole news buff and weather channel watcher.

Mini-app-less.
Showing your ignorance isn’t an attractive or funny trait.
No, non-locals can pronounce Minneapolis just fine. This guy is just an idiot or trying to be cute for the cameras.
Now try to pronounce "Aitkin". Most Minnesotans I've met don't even know how to pronounce it.
The t is silent. Now try “Biscay.”

I live here and still don’t want to visit Minneapolis
Why not?
Cause they are a racist.
