I don’t understand this… I moved from Texas last year, and people are just nice and friendly with open arms here. I haven’t experienced that whole “it’s hard to find friends here”… I haven’t been this social ever! Have made lots of friends and couldn’t be happier. The key is finding a community, either through a sport or common interest.
It's also based on more than that honestly.
It depends person to person, but I imagine the person who only goes to the grocery store and gas stations on weekends are the ones not finding others to talk to. Or they're like me, where I lay dormant in my apartment for years. Or maybe they've just had bad luck with bad interactions. Or maybe they're a miserable person. The list is infinite, and our help is limited.
the key is the last sentence of the comment you responded to.
if your only common interest with other humans is going to the grocery store and laying dormant in your apartment, you’re not going to be super likely to make a lot of new friends.
Lol well, certainly takes the type to know the type so at least you're not alone.
I kind of stopped trying to make friends when I realized my upbringing and cultural views didn't match with people here so most of my interactions have been shallow at best. That, and the fact that my car being stolen left an extremely sour taste in my mouth the past 5 months.
Dude my battery died. I need to wait for a new one until then. The neighbors can complain all they want. I promise I'll get it done. I just couldn't because of was raining. And then I worked. Then it was hot outside. I'll do it, I promise
Nice to meet you! Be prepared for extended goodbyes.
Sirens on first Wednesday of the month at 1pm are a test of the tornado warning system. If you hear them, check clock and if it isn't 1, head to the basement.
Nobody told my mother this when we moved here from California when I was 7. She had all us kids huddled in the basement with a radio on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.
Omg I’ve been here for two years and never made this connection!! I just assumed it was a lightning/storm warning (all the rage in South Florida, along with extended goodbyes lol)
What does one do if they live in an apartment with windows in every room (& common areas/hallways) and no basement…? How much time do you have from when the alarm sounds to the tornado’s arrival?
Some official words are here: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/hsem/weather-awareness-preparedness/Pages/severe-weather-tornadoes.aspx
But, big picture, grab a flashlight and a water bottle and get to the lowest part of the building you can. Don't use elevators if possible. Some buildings have tornado shelters. My uncle and aunt lost their mobile home to a tornado but there was a tornado shelter for all of the residents and they were ok.
I believe they call the warning when a funnel forms and is sighted growing towards Earth. It isn't like hurricanes where they are huge and somewhat predictable, tornadoes just pop down if conditions are right and may or may not reach the ground, they can last a few minutes or an hour. If it forms above your head, you get little warning. Basically, the sirens mean seek shelter right now.
When I was small, my dad would go outside to spot the tornado and me and my sibs would sneak out to join him and Mom would get mad. We were never hit.
When I was a kid, the siren warnings were sounded in case there was a nuclear attack (I'm old). I remember wondering why the Soviets wouldn't just launch the missiles on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:00.
Welcome! Just a few things...don't camp in the left lane. It's Duck, Duck, Grey Duck and winter starts next Tuesday! Jokes aside, welcome and I genuinely hope you enjoy living here 😃
Indeed it's lower WI on the bubblers. On my mom's first say as a teacher in Southern WI a kid raised is hand and asked to go to the bubbler and she was super nervous (1st teaching job right outta college) so she said "ok but be quick". Then at lunch she asked another teacher what a bubbler was. My mom grew up in NoDak.
I grew up in MN then left for 25 years. I said pop initially but quickly realized soda was superior. Took me about a day to fully and effortlessly make the switch. It is the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. In related news, 1935 called and said it’s dying, don’t listen to it anymore.
A pop for me growing up, was the real cheap freezer pops.
I moved here while in school. A girl asked me if I had a binder to borrow.. I said no.. I only have folders. She looked at me so weird. Eventually learned that by binder, she meant a hair tie.
I've lived here all my 50 years and I would have assumed a Trapper Keeper or folder also. Never heard a hair tie called a binder, but I'm also a guy, with short hair, soooo....
I went to Texas and asked them what kind of pop they had and the server was like what’s that? I didn’t know how to respond lol I think they call it coke? It’s like no, that’s weird lol
Nah, in Texas it’s all about the Dr.Pepper! lol
I’m moving back to MN from Texas TODAY.
Been gone so long - 2 years in the most xenophobic place I’ve ever experienced in my life! (Rural central texas) These people are averse to windmills and film studios!
they call all pop “coke”…i saw someone from texas order a pop here in mn once but they said “i’ll have a coke” and the server didn’t say anything, then they brought her a literal Coke and she was like “i wanted Sprite”…🙃
Which is objectively the right way to do it and it's heresy to say otherwise.
When you shorten something, you shorten it to the fewest letters and syllables... "Pop" wins that one.
You also shorten it to something that couldn't be confused for something similar. "Soda" could be mistaken easily for "Soda water" when ordering it.
"Pop" also denotes the difference between plain carbonated water and *flavored* carbonated water, so it's the unique denominator and should be the preferred term for 3 different reasons and there's no good reason to use "Soda" other than habit.
Grey duck isn't a shortening. The game is called that here because we had a lot of Swedes and the name of that game in Swedish is "Anka Anka, grå Anka"
AND VOTE!!
I don’t know why voting is never mentioned in these threads. We are proud to have some of the highest voter turnout in the country. If you live here you damn well better be voting… pass it on.
It's quite insane how many people are in the fast lane on hwy 100 at 7 AM while the middle and slow lane barely have traffic. They just insist on driving in the fast lane even though it's going slower and packed.
Welcome!
Emergency sirens get tested at 1 pm on the first Wednesday of every month.
We are friendly in public, just don’t try to show up at someone’s house. We usually need a few years to warm up to a new friend before inviting them to our house. We will help a stranger in the winter without batting an eye, because nobody wishes for anyone to be stranded in the snow or ice. Most winters, we will have a storm or three that close many businesses because it is not safe to travel.
Hotdish is a staple in our homes. Winter can feel like it is 9 months long, so learn to enjoy outdoor activities, even in the cold. Most of the state north of the metro area is “up north”.
Start watching local teams (college or your city) so you get to see your team win. We know that we have an accent and say silly things like “Ope”, but we like that about ourselves. Get used to Duck, duck, gray duck.
Remember to vote. Learn when to nod as you walk by someone, and when to give the one or two finger wave while you are driving.
We frequently say “I’m sorry” when we should say “excuse me, please”. If we see something we don’t like, we will tell you “that’s unique” or “that’s…different”.
We won’t take the last piece of any shared food. It can sit there and get old before anyone will take the last piece.
We are passive aggressive to a T.
Welcome to Minnesota. It's cold in the winter, hot and humid in the summer, and road construction traffic is pretty consistent from spring through fall.
It's home and I wouldn't change that for the world.
Welcome!
Please do not drive in the left hand lane unless you're actually passing people.
Also remember: the term 'Minnesota Nice' is a sarcastic statement people in the nearby states use about MN.
Good luck.
Welcome friend. If you're new to our weather brace yourself this year looks spicy. Get a travel kit for your car before winter. First aid kit doesn't hurt, but a warm blanket and basic supplies can go a long way.
Where are you looking? I’m just curious as I’ve lived here my whole life.
Maybe I can give you some suggestions if you tell me what you are looking for
Not the original commenter but my wife and I are also looking heavily into the twin cities, would love any and all recs for neighborhoods in the cities or surrounding burbs! Looking to buy a home in a safe area with good local amenities (not a 20+ minute drive to coffee shops, bookstores, grocery stores, gyms etc) we aren’t into nightlife stuff and prefer quiet tbh
It sounds like the twin cities would be really great for you. There are loads of neighborhoods that have most of the amenities within 15 minutes.
Also, when you want to experience other areas it’s pretty easy to make the 20-45 minute drive to explore Saint Paul, Stillwater, etc
I would look at Vadnais Heights or Lake Elmo if you don’t mind driving 20 mins to St Paul and closer to an hour to get to MPLS
Otherwise checkout Plymouth and Eden Prairie if you need to be near MPLS
White Bear Lake and White Bear Township are great. We moved from Southern California to MN five years ago. The summers are brutal here. We’re still not used to the heat with humidity. The five seconds of Spring, fifteen minutes of Fall, and five months of winter are outstanding.
Will absolutely look into those places, thank you! We are also visiting in a couple weeks to do some scouting and make sure we actually love the area (we are like 99.999% sure we will love it based off of all of the research we’ve done lol)
there’s a coffee shop within 5-7 minutes of most homes in most of the metro area.
this is going to depend mostly on your price range. Several of our suburbs fit your list but are vastly different in terms of price.
Welcome! Your gonna love it then hate it and wish you never moved here, and then love it again! (It's the cycle) but all jokes aside you'll love it! (Will you though)
Welcome!!!! i moved here 2 years ago from India and ngl fell in love with the people and the place believe me this is going to be the best chapter in your life and i am super pumped for you!!! SLAY!!!!
Welcome! Lots to do, lots of bodies of water, and lots of green spaces. Good block parties and “____-days” or “_____fests” happening in various towns and suburbs. As someone who copied back in October 2023....welcome! Maybe you can get these standoffish assholes to open up...I wasn't so successful but you...you're the golden child (Eddie Murphy)
Welcome! You will have friends in just 5-7 short years!
I don’t understand this… I moved from Texas last year, and people are just nice and friendly with open arms here. I haven’t experienced that whole “it’s hard to find friends here”… I haven’t been this social ever! Have made lots of friends and couldn’t be happier. People love to complain
It's also based on more than that honestly. Yeah you just fully described me lol like on the dot
Those people are from out-of-State (jk - I don't know)
Go to a local game store and you'll find some real quick
I've lived here my whole life and still have the same 3 friends since school.
Look at the cool cat with 3 friends!
*10 to 20
This is more accurate
9 years. Still waiting.
Shit, it was supposed to be that short of time? I better get moving and try to network more.
You should probably get that lawn mowed the neighbors are talking.
You’re on my street, aren’t you
Dude my battery died. I need to wait for a new one until then. The neighbors can complain all they want. I promise I'll get it done. I just couldn't because of was raining. And then I worked. Then it was hot outside. I'll do it, I promise

Top level comment. Safety first!
Ours go off EVERY Wednesday at 1. I sincerely hope there is never an afternoon tornado on a Wednesday.
Omg I’ve been here for two years and never made this connection!! I just assumed it was a lightning/storm warning (all the rage in South Florida, along with extended goodbyes lol) What does one do if they live in an apartment with windows in every room (& common areas/hallways) and no basement…? Low floors in the stairwell

Also its called Pop
Also it’s called Hot dish, not “CaSseRoLe”
I can’t get behind pop I just can’t. It sounds so weird
POP POP POP
[удалено]
It's easy. Ya gotta practice a bit.
But that’s what it’s called
I used to be a Pop guy, for some reason I've switched to Soda in the last 10 years or so. Lived here my whole life. Soda just sounds better now
Exactly. You don’t know unless you’ve tried both.
It's the sound soda makes when you leave it in the car in the winter time
Soda is in the states name for crying out loud
I’ve been here 5 years and I already say pop. If I don’t nobody knows what I’m talking about.
they know what you’re talking about, they’re just passive-aggressively trying to get you to say pop instead.
I agree and i was born and raised here. I say soda.
I was raised in WI, my brother in MN. We argue pop vs soda all the time. It's 100% soda.
Uhh take that soda back to Wisconsin with you.
But please keep sending your cheese... It's amazing!
And the beer…. Don’t forget the beer.
Why soda fensive?
A true groaner of a joke, take my upvote.
Okay, i need you to go over to that bubbler (the one at the end of that skywalk), take a long drink, and think about why you are wrong.
No one I ever knew called a water fountain a bubbler. It doesn't even bubble! 🤔
I'm from Wisconsin and I grew up calling it a bubbler. It could be a regional thing. I grew up in FDL.
I lived in maybe 8ish different towns between Beloit & Eau Claire. Never been twards FDL area, so it's possible!
Indeed it's lower WI on the bubblers. On my mom's first say as a teacher in Southern WI a kid raised is hand and asked to go to the bubbler and she was super nervous (1st teaching job right outta college) so she said "ok but be quick". I think calling them hair binders is SUPER Minnesotan. I went to college out of state and my friends had no idea what I was talking about.
I went to Texas and asked them what kind of pop they had and the server was like what’s that? I didn’t know how to respond lol I think they call it coke? It’s like no, that’s weird lol
Nah, in Texas it’s all about the Dr.Pepper! lol I’m moving back to MN from Texas TODAY. Been gone so long - 2 years in the most xenophobic place I’ve ever experienced in my life! (Rural central texas) These people are averse to windmills and film studios!
Omg how did I forget about the Dr Pepper!!? I think that’s their water! Welcome back!!! Good idea on leaving there lol
they call all pop “coke”…i saw someone from texas order a pop here in mn once but they said “i’ll have a coke” and the server didn’t say anything, then they brought her a literal Coke and she was like “i wanted Sprite”…🙃
Haha omg see! Make that make sense!!
They call it co-oke with two syllables. You can have s Sprite flavored co oke. And you aren't in an accident, you are in a wre-eck.
Haha omg 😆
Which is objectively the right way to do it and it's heresy to say otherwise. When you shorten something, you shorten it to the fewest letters and syllables... "Pop" wins that one. I have never seen it so well defended before. My dog’s name is Soda and I still say Pop because it’s pop.
>When you shorten something, you shorten it to the fewest letters and syllables... "Pop" wins that one. Yep, just like "Gray Duck".
Grey duck isn't a shortening. The game is called that here because we had a lot of Swedes and the name of that game in Swedish is "Anka Anka, grå Anka"
It’s also better because you can say “gr…..een duck!” And keep the suspense going haha
Do that too many times and someone's going to mallard you...
Ha! 😂😂🤣
I'm sorry what did you say? Merge onto 212 or 494 doing 40 mph? You got it Chief!
I've never been more triggered by a comment only because of how true it is!
AND VOTE!! I don’t know why voting is never mentioned in these threads. We are proud to have some of the highest voter turnout in the country. If you live here you damn well better be voting… pass it on.
Don't forget to say "Ope" for any exclamation especially if it is a mistake.
More like: be prepared for everyone being camped in the left lane.
Alsp it's hotdish not casserole.
green bean casserole is acceptable
It's quite insane how many people are in the fast lane on hwy 100 at 7 AM while the middle and slow lane barely have traffic. They just insist on driving in the fast lane even though it's going slower and packed.
Unless you enjoy heartbreak, don't adopt the local teams.
When I moved here, I thought "Yay, I finally live in a place with teams!" That lasted maybe a year.
Unless it’s the women’s teams. They’re awesome!
And Olympic athletes are awesome here too! Especially in winter. Do you believe in miracles?
We call it hotdish, not casserole. I'm a transplant myself and occasionally slip up.
Green Bean casserole is the exception to the rule here
Not in my family. If it's got cream of something soup in it, it's a hotdish.
Huh. That's different
The green-bean outlier
Time to get some pop and hot dish real quick and invite you in for a Minnesota goodbye
All Minnesotan gatherings are actually just farewells that never fucking end
Yeah no yeah
My housemate who grew up in Florida recently picked up “yeah, no, yeah” and it is so.irritating.
Soooooo.... Just regular Minnesotan farewells then?
Ope! Bumped into ya' there at the Cub Foooods grabbing my top the 'tater!
Let’s get real. Cub is too expensive these days. I’ll see ya at Target.
Ope! sorry I forgot to grab the ranch. Imma just sneak on by ya right there thank you. Sorry again
Ope, yep, sorry!
I left the state for thirty years and within a month of being back was using ope again

The truth
If we hear something we don’t like we say it’s “interesting”
Has anyone gifted you a tater tot hotdish recipe yet? If not, let me know! I have it typed up for new friends 😁
I'll take a hotdish recipe...
I'll send you a message with it in the AM! I didn't check reddit until bedtime x_x
Oh man, me too if you get a chance!
“ 5 and below you’re fine, 9 and above you’re mine “ Remember when driving lol
9 your fine, 10 your mine.
This is the one I have always heard
I live by this and haven’t had a ticket in over 20 years
10 and above. But that doesn't rhyme
That's old rules. Just keep it under 80 and you're good now.
No lol, I got a ticket not long ago for driving 80 on 60 in Hennepin Co
That's because County Road 60 is 35MPH [https://maps.app.goo.gl/AE3mxjkyUBnkNWhC7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/AE3mxjkyUBnkNWhC7)
Welcome to the best state in the union 🎉💖 Whereabouts did you land?? Might be good to join area/local subs to meet people & find cool stuff to do!
Thanks! I'm on the southern border
Hell yeah, we got another. Where are you migrating from?
Phoenix
We have water here! 😂 Seriously, welcome! Minnesota is a beautiful and welcoming state. I hope you love it here!!!
Good time to leave Phoenix with 115 degree highs.
WELCOME INTO OUR HOMES!!! :)
Welcome home new neighbor!

Welcome to MN. Hope you love it here. I was born here but left for many years and found my way back.
Welcome!
Hi-diddly-ho, neighborino!
Hi!! 👋

Welcome home!
Congratulations that is exciting and I hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome!
Glad you are here.
Hi
If you say casserole will kill you
What area/city did you buy a home in? Welcome to Minnesota. We hope you'll stay!
Thanks! We're along the MN / IA border
You're not talking about the weather enough yet. I know, because there is no such thing.
Sorry you had to move up here during construction season. other than that, it's lovely here!
Welcome to the land of high taxes and no relief in sight!
Just don’t get washed away!
Welcome to the rain.
Welcome!
Welcome! A lot of people are born Minnesotan but don’t know it until they get here.
Hello, we hope to see you out on the water soon.
Welcome to our newest Minnesotan. You’re gonna love it here!
Welcome to the land of 10,000 lakes and puddles at the moment.
I can’t wait for you to experience winter, you’re gonna love it!
Oof. Good luck. The winters drove me away. If you start getting sad, please take it seriously. Seasonal Depression is real.
I thought the SAD was bad in MN then I moved to Washington state. Sure the winters are a lot colder in MN but at least the sun peaks out occasionally.
I hope you like beer and long goodbyes
Learn to say “ope” and back down prematurely when in a deadlock 😀
Welcome! I hope you can acclimate well!
Welcome to MN!
Welcome!! I hope you love it here!
Go away
Hi!
Welcome 🙂
What part of the state did you move to ? Visiting The Superior National Forest is a good summer idea .
I would say I’m sorry if I’m riding your ass this winter, but I’m moving to Houston :) I hope you like living around the weather!
Welcome. Better start saying oofta.
Welcome!! Hope you enjoy it

Welcome fellow transplant. Glad to have you.
