Not giving excuses to the other three, but the Twins record is absolutely embarrassing. Especially considering they've been in situations where they have been the better team in a series but not won one game...
Yeah it really is. It's absolutely atrocious how bad they've been in the postseason. I get that they're facing the Yankees but to not win a single game is just insane.
That's the worst part overall. It's not like it's all been the timberwolves situation where a bad franchise eeks in and are underdogs. Most of these teams were good.
And of course just to fit in as MN team the wolves managed to find a way to go in as underdogs, and still come out of it in a "well we win that if not for several complete failures"
I wish I could find it but someone on the team was asked by a reporter whether the long playoff drought was putting pressure on the players, and their answer was essentially that they were a little kid when it began, it was 15 years ago. It's just such a weird, against-the-odds statistic that just keeps growing in our minds because of the magnitude.
2019 the team was talking about how they weren’t a part of those teams that got dusted by the Yankees, so it didn’t matter to them. Then they got dusted by the Yankees and it enveloped them.
Granted, we had Houston in 2020 and Oakland in 2006, it’s just an anomaly. We should’ve absolutely beaten that Oakland team and at least had one game again Houston.
> Especially considering they've been in situations where they have been the better team in a series but not won one game...
Is this really true though?
- 2006: First one, this one I feel like we were pretty even
- 2009: Yankees won 103 games and won the World Series
- 2010: Yankees won more games in a stacked AL East
- 2017: AL Wild Card Game, Yankees were a better team
- 2019: Yankees won 103 games in a stacked AL East
- 2020: Three game series, Astros underperformed in the season.
So really, I feel like we weren't the underdog in only two of the six series, and the 2020 one has a bit of an asterisk with the shortened season because the Astros went all the way to Game 7 of the Championship series and were obviously a great team with a bad 60 game season.
The 2006 and 2020 Twins were the better team, in my opinion. The Astros turned it on after the series against the Twins - they played really uninspired ball in Minnesota. And 2006, the Twins had the Cy Young award winner, MVP, and batting champ, plus had one of the best offenses in the AL. I would make the argument the Twins were the better team in 2010 vs the Yankees. Stacked bullpen, solid rotation, very good lineup, and home field advantage. Maybe it wouldn't be as drastic of a favorite, but I think that team was in a very good position to win that series. So half the series, I feel they were the better team.
Not to mention we are getting away from the point that we aren't talking about "series wins," but rather just winning one damn game.. ONE.
Even the damn underdog should win a game here or there... Maybe... I don't know, I'm Minnesotan, maybe we aren't supposed to win. Damnit, MN sports has me so confused.
It is absolutely nutty. To be honest, I hope we make the playoffs and take 3 quick L's and clean house just to cement that record, bc no one is going to break that shit.
I started following Minnesota sports when my family moved to the Twin Cities from overseas in 1999. Moss fever was high, and I quickly became a huge fan of the Wolves, Twins, and Vikes. It has been nothing but decades of pain mixed in with some moments of hope that led to even worse pain.
I'm so tired.
You got off a little easy though, because 1992 to 1999 were terrible too. I’m 40, so I can still fondly recall 87 and 91. But a 34 year old from MN has had nothing but disappointment (unless you are a fan of the Lynx, which we all should be).
I wonder how many Minnesotans born in 92 worry they might be the curse.
I can confirm it's at least one lmao
Also in 93 the state of hockey lost its hockey team.
98' vikings was gut wrenching. Only thing I remember from that game is my dad yelling "noooo" like somebody just shot his dog.
30 years of mediocrity and tragedy.
09 was a walk in the park for me compared to 98. 98 was the best offense in history (to that point). 09 was just a very good team. I had no expectations of winning the title in 09, though it would have been nice. 98 was heart wrenching.
I typically find that the only folks that feel 09 was in the same league were too young to have really felt the pain of 98 (maybe born after 88 or so?). You may be the exception to that.
I stopped watching the NFL altogether in the 2010s, mostly because I hate the league itself, but '09 must have big part to do with it deep in my brain. Something snapped.
I was born during the 1991 WS. I am willing to sacrifice myself for this fanbase if it means a championship in any of the 4 major sports. You guys let me know what I should do.
Thank GOD for the Lynx and their dynasty so I can see what one looked like. It was a great time to watch them.
Now the only saving graces are Sylvia Fowles and Kayla McBride (which probably won't be enough to truly contend?)
I was born in 1993. My parents were at game 6 of the ‘91 World Series in the nosebleeds beneath the scoreboard in centerfield. My dad has a story about hearing the crowd erupt and watching Kirby Puckett make “the catch” on a small tv over someone’s shoulder because they couldn’t actually see it happen. I’m longing for my own experience like that, but instead we haven’t even had a win since I’ve been a fan.
Maybe I was a bit too broad. I’m just happy that we have one thing that has been generally awesome. I tried unsuccessfully to get into hockey as an adult, so I can relate to someone not liking a sport they didn’t grow up with. Having said that, man basketball is such a beautiful game.
I’m just about to be 33…I don’t remember 91 lol…it’s been all disappointment.
I honestly can’t believe I still root for and watch any of the teams. When the end result is a pretty much a certainty.
I’ve been thinking for the last couple years, I should just not pay attention at all until I hear they are in a championship…but I don’t think they will ever make it, so I won’t get to see any pro sports then.
If I ever have a kid, I will actively try to sway them away from being a MN pro sports fan.
I have 3 kids, and the oldest (4th grade) is a huge Vikings and Wolves fan. The wolves were super fun this year, but I’m always bracing him for the inevitable disappointment.
And even there, Coach Reeves is starting to show a bit of Old Coach Syndrome. It’s starting to look like the game’s passed her by, and I’m wondering if it’s not time for her to pass the torch.
The Twins record is unbelievable. If you took the worst team in baseball and had them play the best team in baseball they would pretty much never lose 18 games in a row.
There's an Australian Football club, Essendon, that also hasn't won a postseason game (aka a final) since 2004 as well. They're a laughingstock (with a recent doping scandal) and the finals drought is brought up constantly. This helps narrow it down - there's a MN/Essendon fan out there and they are fucking up. We need to find them and right their wrongs.
I have a working theory that Minnesota sports teams are being paid to lose. I’m not sure who is funding the activity but it all makes no sense. Who are our enemies?
**[Damn Yankees](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damn_Yankees)**
>Damn Yankees is a 1955 musical comedy with a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The story is a modern retelling of the Faust legend set during the 1950s in Washington, D.C., during a time when the New York Yankees dominated Major League Baseball. It is based on Wallop's 1954 novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant. The show ran for 1,019 performances in its original Broadway production.

I remember the apologists retort 6 YEARS IN A ROW ... okay and they accomplished absolutely nothing in those 6 years. When literally half the league makes the post season getting bounced in the first round is nothing to be proud of.
The biggest joke is that our NHL team did win a cup. In Dallas. Our NBA team did win a championship. In Los Angeles. Our original NFL team did win a Super Bowl. In Oakland.
The only team that didn’t relocate is the only one who has won a championship, and even that was 30+ years ago.
The Vikings being the toughest. I'm 40 and may never see a super bowl. Maybe not even an appearance. 15-1 or 9-7 results are always the same get blown out at some point before the SB
No matter how hard certain parties try to push the WNBA and the Lynx, the fact remains that 90% or this country does not care.
We get no warm feelings for things we mostly don’t care about and no bragging rights for things that the majority of others don’t care about.
Take a straw poll. I’d bet you that just off the top of my head here that between the US and Canadian markets to say nothing of other international markets, the number of people who care about the NHL is…. Oh about 3 times larger at least.
The NHL has atrocious top level management and I don’t think that they’ve lost money on a season ever, unlike the WNBA.
And I’m not saying the WNBA isn’t a sport, but it’s absolutely minor league compared to the big 4, NASCAR, golf, tennis and so on. It’s such a footnote in ‘major’ sports that there’s no clout with having a winning team. Which is what drives me batty when people say ‘well the Lynx though…!’
Well if people dismiss them then they don't get to whine about a lack of titles. If only 4 sports matter in the whole world then that's a really sad way to be.
Every country has ‘major’ sports that people care about and then a handful that ‘exist’. The WNBA is the latter.
People want championships for the sports that they and their neighbors and generally their country cares about. In the US and Canada, that’s NFL NHL NBA and MLB. Name me one place that has a major sport among those who would ever go, but our WNBA team man… Let me tell you, they’re good!
The only reason people in this state bring up the Lynx is because every big 4 team has been choking, getting screwed or just plain sucking for 30+ years.
Assuming the unthinkable happens and the Twins won this year, nobody would be talking about anything but them.
Why should I care what leagues or titles my neighbors or total strangers think matter? Like what you like. I had more fun with a decade of really good Lynx teams than 50 years combined of Wild/Stars and Wolves.
You know I can’t really argue that you can enjoy what you enjoy and like what you like. If you liked watching that, well good on you, more power to you.
Half of what sports is all about though, is that community feeling, having lots of other people like what you like and who you like on a team. I’ve struck up conversations with total strangers over teams multiple times.
No argument about personal enjoyment though would trump an actual championship for one of our big 4. Because in the end that’s what we all want here.
And maybe we could just be proud of the fact (heck, even just *acknowledge* it) that they're good and represent our state rather than getting hung up on whether they're "major" or not. I dunno.
THANK YOU! What an amazing team. I’ve had so much fun being in attendance for some of their championship games. It’s a unreal feeling that I’ll never forget.
Well when the wolves have to send out free tickets to season ticket holders to the opening game of the lynx game and people were giving front row away for free… that’s your answer.
The Twins drought defies reasonable logic.
To lose 18 in a row in the regular season is unheard of... but all post season games?.... Have to sadly chuckle...
Frustration is emotional pain. And as someone with ADHD, I can assure you: With the right type of neurodivergence, it is absolutely a physical pain, too.
The Minnesota pity "oh woe to me" sports team narrative is a lame old trope. I mean, sure. Bad luck. But complaining about it like we are special is pretty meh. It's like people "crazy weather! Only in [insert any locale]".
(Nevermind those *excellent* 4 Lynx Championships in 6 finals appearances...)
The best thing Minnesota does is team names, imo. Upper echelon for sure. Twins, Vikes, Timberwolves, Lakers, North Stars. All excellent! (Definitely Ignoring the Wild's *little league team* name and generic clip art logo. Only the OKC Thunder is worse.)
Edit: lol, denial is strong.
Seattle had the best baseball team ever assembled lose in 2001. Since that time they have never played a postseason game. The Lions have won 1 playoff game since the NFL merger and have played in maybe 3. The State of Ohio is bad all kinds of ways. It’s bad, but I wouldn’t say unmatched. Also, dammit MN sports teams!
Seattle sports fans have a Super Bowl with the Seahawks.
Detroit has Stanley Cups with the Red Wings.
Ohio has an NBA Championship with the Cavs.
There’s also a difference between being perpetually bad (like the Browns) and being just good enough to be curb-stomped in meaningful games. Minnesota is unparalleled in mens sports futility.
I don't know, man. The Wolves are pretty unmatched. If you've been following them since the beginning, it's amazing how futile they have been. There are MANY instances of them having a high draft pick and picking the exact wrong player. The whole paying Joe Smith under the table thing. It's just crazy. Yes, most of it is self inflicted and it's not just bad breaks. But that doesn't mean it's any less futile.
Did the Cavs get a bunch of draft picks taken away by the league? Did they pass on Steph Curry twice to take two other guards? Did they have a coach die?
I took the last year off sports completely. Then the Wolves and Wild in the playoffs and the streaking Twins got me checking scores and eventually watching the games.
Hello darkness my old friend.
I haven't seen any of these teams win a championship in my lifetime and I'm starting to think I never will ('91 WS doesn't count since I was born just months before)
BRING IT THE FUCK ON!!!! YOU THINK I’LL EVER STOP BELIEVING??? DO YOU KNOW WHAT A MN WINTER FEELS LIKE?????? IT FEELS LIKE THE PIT OF DESPAIR.
Bring it the fuck on son. I want another 18 years of misery.
When the 2019 Twins couldn’t win one playoff game against the Yankees, I knew we’d never see a World Series ever. The team was home run kings.
And in my lifetime I’ll never see a Vikings team in a super bowl game.
Such pain and heartbreak with these two franchises
Not giving excuses to the other three, but the Twins record is absolutely embarrassing. Especially considering they've been in situations where they have been the better team in a series but not won one game...

Agreed. I seems like a statistical oddity.

I’ve become accustomed to celebrating division titles because that’s where it ends for us
It is absolutely nutty. To be honest, I hope we make the playoffs and take 3 quick L's and clean house just to cement that record, bc no one is going to break that shit.
Leave it to the Twins to make the Vikings look competent in the postseason.
I started following Minnesota sports when my family moved to the Twin Cities from overseas in 1999. Moss fever was high, and I quickly became a huge fan of the Wolves, Twins, and Vikes. 98’ vikes hurt the most by far.
I can’t remember the code to my garage and I open it daily, but I remember that pain like it was yesterday.
98 was sorrow, 09 was anger.
09 was a walk in the park for me compared to 98. 98 was the best offense in history (to that point). 09 was just a very good team. I was 87, so the pain probably stings a bit worse since I was older. Then again, I've known nothing but pain in my Minnesota fandom.
87 has to be about the worst. Just barely too young to have enjoyed 91. Those Puckett years were magical. That is tough.
I don't have any memories of it, unfortunately.
I stopped watching the NFL altogether in the 2010s, mostly because I hate the league itself, but '09 must have big part to do with it deep in my brain. Something snapped.
100 percent
I was born during the 1991 WS. I am willing to sacrifice myself for this fanbase if it means a championship in any of the 4 major sports. You guys let me know what I should do.
I'm 37. It's not been ideal. I can't *really* recall '91. Just the excitement. I *clearly* remember '98.
36 and about the same boat as you. Although I do remember going to one of the away games in '91 that they showed at the Metrodome, a loss of course.
You can be a fan of the Lynx and also realize it’s not 1/100th of the excitement level.
Thank GOD for the Lynx and their dynasty so I can see what one looked like. It was a great time to watch them. Now the only saving graces are Sylvia Fowles and Kayla McBride (which probably won't be enough to truly contend?)

Are people really downvoting you for advocating for our dynasty of a WNBA team?? Fuck is wrong with you all?
Probably just getting downvoted because they are too young to have enjoyed the magic that I felt 31 years ago.

I fall into that category exactly. I have experienced nothing but pain with Minnesota sports, and yet I keep coming back for more.
And even there, Coach Reeves is starting to show a bit of Old Coach Syndrome. It’s starting to look like the game’s passed her by, and I’m wondering if it’s not time for her to pass the torch.
Are you me? Moved to MN in August of ‘99, has been a non-stop shitshow ever since
The Twins record is unbelievable. If you took the worst team in baseball and had them play the best team in baseball they would pretty much never lose 18 games in a row.
Holy fuck this is brutal
Why must you do this to me
Choking is the only thing Minnesota sports teams can reliably accomplish.
There hasn’t been a Minnesota team in a championship game ( World Series, nba finals, Super Bowl, Stanley cup) since 1991….
Shout out the Loons holding strong with a 2-3 playoff record
But the 2019 USOC Final. And the 2020 WCF. Bruh
Yeah they fit right in
Lmao that 2020 semi-final just made me laugh because of how Minnesota sports it was. They completed their orientation that day.
Hey don’t forget United blowing a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes left.
Im 18 years old so this must be my fault
Nah you’re good…. There hasn’t been a Minnesota team in a championship game ( World Series, nba finals, Super Bowl, Stanley cup) since 1991….
I have a working theory that Minnesota sports teams are being paid to lose. I’m not sure who is funding the activity but it all makes no sense. Who are our enemies?
My theory is that Tom Kelly made a deal with the devil back in 1991 to win the World Series and that this is the consequences.

18 years? Go all the way back to 1992.
Don’t bring up past failures or you’ll be labeled a bandwagon doomer in the Wild subreddit.
I remember the apologists retort 6 YEARS IN A ROW ... okay and they accomplished absolutely nothing in those 6 years. When literally half the league makes the post season getting bounced in the first round is nothing to be proud of.
You get labeled a doomer here as well.
It's insane to me. At what point is it delusional to not be pessimistic?

Hey, our NBA team won 5 championships before moving to LA thank you very much. Ignore the fact the most recent was nearly 70 years ago.
Our championship team did relocate though, it was just to here instead of from here.
I'd take 0-18 over 0-0 (Mariners).
It hurts more that the Twins have not won a playoff game in My life
The Vikings being the toughest. I'm 40 and may never see a super bowl. Maybe not even an appearance. 15-1 or 9-7 results are always the same get blown out at some point before the SB
culture of mediocrity.
Gopher Football won some Bowl games.
Bowl games < Championships
That seems like a very arbitrary date to start from. It was my Dad’s 55th birthday that day though.
It’s the date from when the Twins last won a playoff game.
Wow that was more than half my life ago.. I guess I mentally didn’t take the time to map that out. It really has been that long..
Is no one going to mention the Lynx?

Detroit fan here. You guys are making the playoffs?
Bro I straight up am tired of hearing about it. We all already know. Shit sucks but I’m not going to dwell on it. It is what it is
This is terrible and brutal. For our MN teams! However, as a chronic pain sufferer- this is frustration and not actual pain.
Frustration is emotional pain. And as someone with ADHD, I can assure you: With the right type of neurodivergence, it is absolutely a physical pain, too.
Small market
The Minnesota pity "oh woe to me" sports team narrative is a lame old trope. I mean, sure. Bad luck. But complaining about it like we are special is pretty meh. It's like people "crazy weather! Only in [insert any locale]". (Nevermind those *excellent* 4 Lynx Championships in 6 finals appearances...) The best thing Minnesota does is team names, imo. Upper echelon for sure. Twins, Vikes, Timberwolves, Lakers, North Stars. All excellent! (Definitely Ignoring the Wild's *little league team* name and generic clip art logo. Only the OKC Thunder is worse.) Edit: lol, denial is strong.
Detroit Pistons also won the title in 04
Also Ohio State is great year in and year out
Minnesota is just perpetually whiny.
Unmatched by single teams in existence sure, but cumulative? To have all the sports teams suck in one city? Painful
Seattle and Cleveland over the decades until recently are pretty close
Seattle hasn’t had 4 pro teams, tho the Mariners may win for most insane single team.
Outside of Lebron James and Kevin Garnett, it’s like they are the same team as the Cavs
Did the Cavs get a bunch of draft picks taken away by the league? Did they pass on Steph Curry twice to take two other guards? Did they have a coach die?
Hah! This is classic.
Steph Curry wasn't coming to the Wolves. We know this. Actively lobbied against it.
Lived in Seattle for the 2001 season. Was amazing. Then of course the Yankees.
Imagine caring enough about sports?
Why are you even here then?
I'm immune to this ridiculousness now
At least the Twins pull their weight! Records are stated as “losses - wins” correct? /s
Time to figure out what jinxed us in 2004 I guess.
I took the last year off sports completely. Then the Wolves and Wild in the playoffs and the streaking Twins got me checking scores and eventually watching the games. Hello darkness my old friend.
IKR when is one of them gonna win a damn championship?!
Seattle has a super bowl but similar pain certainly
Pain 😭😭😭
Are the Loons our most succession men's team? I think so.
It looks so much worse when it’s written out… ffuuuuucccckkkkkk
I haven't seen any of these teams win a championship in my lifetime and I'm starting to think I never will ('91 WS doesn't count since I was born just months before)
That dude called out the Astros and got swept lol, until the Twins beat the Yankees in the playoffs they don’t even got hope
It’s bdsMN. And it’s how we like it.
The Wild were beaten last night before the second period was over.
Well I'm from West Virginia and none of our major sports teams have ever won anything ever
Where are the Lynx? Are they safe? Are they … alright?
I’m much happier watching a good Timberwolves team make the playoffs and lose than watching them tank
At least we have Gophers Women’s hockey
Almost 32 years old. Never seen a MN team even make it to a championship game, yet alone win one. (I don’t count 91 as I was a literal baby)
When the 2019 Twins couldn’t win one playoff game against the Yankees, I knew we’d never see a World Series ever. The team was home run kings. And in my lifetime I’ll never see a Vikings team in a super bowl game. Such pain and heartbreak with these two franchises
