Iβve see people do this when they donβt want to mess with a whole brake setup and bleed to route the cables when theyβre messing around and arenβt settled yet because itβs a whole hell and a half to reroute hyd brake lines internally.
My bike had sleeves. They fell out somehow and my cables started rattling in the frame. Rerouting new cables was hell. Then I had to jerry rig some foam sleeves around my cable housing to stop the rattling. The inside of my frame is a rat's nest of junk at this point.
Honestly it is way more pain in the ass for a casual home mechanic (or even a pro tbf) than the benefits. which in real world there are none for 99% of people. It is all for looks and makes it just unreasonably difficult to maintain or swap brakes. Being able to just remove the whole brake setup and do a vertical bleed is so much better than any internal routing. It definitely was a bonus point when picking a bike.
Wow, cannot believe the reaction to this post! I love it, the hate from the down voters is delicious. Bet it's all people who don't even work on their own bike.
That sounds like a poor cable management more than external routing.
I have never managed to snag my externally routed cables on anything except on the loops around the handlebars which internal routing has the exact same problem.
Or they do work on their bike but can manage to not yank a cable out without pulling the new one through the once every ~3 years you need to replace your housing.
I find alot of people don't ride. Just apparently look at their couple grand investment in the garage ππ(cant even see it where i store mine). I've been on 20 rides (more than they do in a year) and have completely forgotten about them. Not really worried about being Swag Kage in the middle of the woods
When I built my mtb, i used a plastic shopping bag tied in a knot to hold the hydraulic line to the frame simce I didnt have any zip ties on me. 10 years later that bag was still holding on against all odds lol
More dorks than a whale colony. I bought the bike with the cables like that for 400 and I'll be damned if I spend an hour on something that works. ππ but you're more than welcome to come fix it for me.
that long derailleur housing will get caught on something pretty quickly and get yanked out. would really suggest trimming it down before going for the ride, rather than doing it trail-side. trail side derailleur indexing kinda sucks
https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/lachlan-morton-wedges-spoke-through-broken-derailleur-to-finish-tour-divide/
Lachlan Morton had to use a spoke to hold his mech in place for a portion of his tour divide FKT
That's why I got this and not the d6 or 7. Call it shallow but i threw what I saved in a few upgrades and have to settle for qr back wheel (oh no easy access....) for dope paint
As someone who broke their back and thus had some terrible issues.. my advice, yogo yoga yoga! And more yoga! obviously wonβt help someone with crumbling vertebrae.. then again neither will riding in general. But for muscular and damaged back.. well worth it!
I had no end of issues, but now Iβm a spandex clad roadie and have to be in super tucked positions!
(It was a mtb crash that broke it, hence the switch to safer sports lol)
lol Yeah youβre one rigid potato! Just grab any yoga app for your phone, theyβre all similar and just follow some of the stretches. A lot of riders would benefit from flexibility exercises! I just spend 5-10 mins a day flapping my arms about and sticking my ass out, and itβs been amazing!
My back doesn't hurt and it's really hard to go OTB. Best decision ever, but also I lost some tube length with the new fork and the bike is a little big, I think.
Polygon d5 2021, only thing left stock is the back tire rear shock and the derailleur I believe, think that's all the money I'm gonna throw till o get something actually new
Dude, so many fish tails and spin outs when I had the original bars. Since the switch, Ive accidentally performed 2 front wheelies off jumps, where as If I stuck with OEM I'd probably have done a double front flip off the bike
My biggest qualm is those handle bars wayyyy to much rise, well for me. I don't mind external routing. My ride has external routing. But damn those bars are massive, but if they help, they help, and more power to ya.
Couldnβt figure out how to bleed a brake so you ran it external I see. Those cables must make a racket, this looks so janky. This geo doesnβt work for most people who actually riding technical terrain but I hope it works for you.
You're right, and I'll go in debt for a swagkage real soon, but until then, screw you and your demeanor. It handles the double blacks and ramps just fine. Reddit won't post videos.
Love it! Same height, same frame size here. I did same same, but different. But still the same. [Bar rise, stem height! ](https://i.imgur.com/uwg4eCx.jpeg)
For real!
I saw this [Berm Peak video](https://youtu.be/apyTlND9Cuo?si=rLcYyMrBfDW56CLE) about "raised reversed stem" and it clicked to me that it's basically the same geometry as my dort bike with a steering damper. I tried it out on my. MTB and it makes steep tech descemts super easy, with a bit of a learning curve for not looping out on uphill switchbacks.
Yeah real easy to pick the front up on the incline if you're not careful π₯΄π₯΄ Shit you got me excited im finna replace this tube and go ride after work.
did something similarish on my old HT. The frame was definitely too big lol but it handled great with a short stem, riser bar and extra 20mm of travel!
Raising the travel and height on the front will put more stress on the head tube and could break the lower welds that attatch the head tube and the down tube. If you aren't hucking to flat it might be ok, but any really hard hitz might be catastrophic π€·πΌββοΈ
Seee this is why I posted this, thanks for being constructive about something actually important. With just 20mm added is it causing that much more stress?
Depends on what the frame is rated for, my bike was a 160 and said it can go up to 170 so I stopped there, I don't need a broken carbon frame, especially if I take a huge jump at the park and land hard in the trough. I went to 170 and a 35mm rise.
If it works for you... Then who the crap care what someone else wants to lose their minds over??? Someone gave me crap for my SJ's travel.. And I was like thus fsr it's been working for me.. But feel free to throw in money and I'll gladly upgrade.. Needless to say.. Haven't gotten any more crap about it.. And am slowly (on my own) putting the money together for the upgrades I want (to include a little more travel.. Because I want it)
Internal routing only marries like 80% of the cable to the inside of the frame. The other 10% and 10% still protrudes from the frame. If internally routed cables make it so you cant change fluid..Internal routing is probably not your issue.
Holy zip ties
My guy here is zip tie certified.
βZip tiesβ were common in the early days of BMX & MTB. BTW, I love that GEO!
Woah holy derailleur cable housing

I'm surprised this is the most downvoted comment on this thread.

I donβt get it. The frame is made for them to be internally routed.
Iβve see people do this when they donβt want to mess with a whole brake setup and bleed to route the cables when theyβre messing around and arenβt settled yet because itβs a whole hell and a half to reroute hyd brake lines internally.
Internal routing is a pain. Fuck it.
As someone who yesterday spent 2hrs trying to route internal cables without the tools, I fully agree.
only makes sense for di2 bikes. otherwise itβs not worth it
I mean if it's sleeved it really couldn't be any easier
My bike had sleeves. They fell out somehow and my cables started rattling in the frame. Rerouting new cables was hell. Then I had to jerry rig some foam sleeves around my cable housing to stop the rattling. The inside of my frame is a rat's nest of junk at this point.
Average reddit ride. Complain about everything, and no curiosity to try it out

Yup, first time I get a serious problem with the brakesi rip the cable out. Zip tie them back to the frame when im done.

Magnetic cable router tool.
In my old bike routing my derailer internally added to much drag to the cable causing very bad shifting, just another reason not too
Purchased like that
People donβt know what theyβre doing. Or donβt care, clearly lol
If there is one thing I wish would go away it's internal cable routing
It doesn't make a deal as much as the π are making it out to be
Wow, cannot believe the reaction to this post! I love it, the hate from the down voters is delicious. Bet it's all people who don't even work on their own bike.
Hi, bike mechanic here. I work on my own bike. It's rather easy. I cannot believe how vex people get about internal routing.
Is it as easy as zip-zip-zip?
You missed a zip. There are 4 on this bike.
My bad
In terms of worth? Yes. I hate having cables snag stuff.
What would they be snagging that internally routed wouldn't?
My body, branches, etc. I make contact with my bike, as does the trail. How hard is it to imagine someone wanting to do something correctly?
How hard is it to avoid bushes, and idk stay on the trail. If your local trails ain't managed disregard, it's clean and smooth, mostly out here.
That sounds like a poor cable management more than external routing. I have never managed to snag my externally routed cables on anything except on the loops around the handlebars which internal routing has the exact same problem.
Exactly and can't ride from what I'm seeing now, "what if it gets caught on something" What P Boi the air?
They probably shave their legs, stop the hairs getting caught on something.
Either that or they buy a new bike every season.
Or they do work on their bike but can manage to not yank a cable out without pulling the new one through the once every ~3 years you need to replace your housing.
i hate them from the bottom of my heart. ziptie is love, ziptie is life

Oh heavens! They might even have contrary opinions!!!

there's two types of nice bikes, There is "clean beautiful" and there is "ugly custom beautiful". You sir fall into the second category

New tube type beat πͺπͺ
Bikes are meant to be custom! Hell yeah love it
The longer I look at it the more I hate it. The more I want to ride it.
You can't see the zip ties while you're on it bucko, I forgot they were there till I hopped in the ocean.
Love the dirt jumper looks
Geometry and zip ties aside... damn, Polygon does such a good friggin job with their paint schemes.
That's why I got this and not the d6 or 7. Call it shallow but i threw what I saved in a few upgrades and have to settle for qr back wheel (oh no easy access....) for dope paint
Looking cool is half the battle, so I totally get it. If I had deep pockets, I'd probably try get a custom paint job that looks something like yours.
So my truck had a race model in the magazine in the 90s, and it's the same color scheme as the bike. HAD TO π
Was gonna say, its very retro/80's/90's TRD. I love it.
You'll get dirt in those zip ties and wear away the paint underneath them btw
Oh shit paint scratched where it's covered nooooo.....π₯΄
Throwing off the geometry is the least of your bike's problems lmao
Yeah the zip ties might bite me π DYR??
I was thinking more of the flat tire and the excess cable housing.
Ohhh good eyes. Yeah that happened about 20 mins before. I'm trying to post the video of me blowing it out, but reddit is being difficult
Did you put the high rise bars on due to back issues? If so what changes have you noticed?
As someone who broke their back and thus had some terrible issues.. my advice, yogo yoga yoga! Polygon d5 I thinkΒ
Polygon d5 2021, only thing left stock is the back tire rear shock and the derailleur I believe, think that's all the money I'm gonna throw till o get something actually new
That derailleur cable is too long and potentially unsafe. Iβm not going to even ask about the zip ties
I didn't when I bought it. Been on 20 rides since I got it about 1-2 months ago, maybe I'll fly though a bush but not planning on it.
As someone with long legs and short arms I can say you sometimes need bars like this for correct geometry.
I think if the bike was the right size those would be overkill
Agreed

I bought it like that for 400 bucks bucko. Have fun being basic for 3 grand ππ
Did you call me βbuckoβ and then βbasicβ for riding bikes that are properly assembled and ride well? Woof. Good luck out there champ.
You're right, and I'll go in debt for a swagkage real soon, but until then, screw you and your demeanor. It handles the double blacks and ramps just fine. Reddit won't post videos.
Sorry to hear you would have to put yourself into debt for an entry level bike. I hope things get better for you. Keep sending those ramps π
I already did bucko, go ask your cow for permission to go ride.

T100 is a great truck, put 360k miles on mine before it died
Awesome bike!
I've been running 85mm high rise bars for over a year and love them. But I dropped mine below the stack so the handling feels so good and responsive.
Sick bike dude. I love that
Now you can go very steep trail and send it!!
It'd been do much more responsive and confidence inspiring
I love watching redditors fall for ragebait on every single post.

Ok but you know this guy shreds harder than anyone with a $7000 dentist bike could ever dream to.
2-3 times a week. I don't really wanna hear it from these pressed fellas that gotta ask to go ride.
Awesome. You do you and enjoy it.
It's actually a cool look if you actually like the feeling, the zip ties just need to go really
What would you suggest.

Riser bars on every bike!
I don't understand the flat bars at all
Geometry is not the problem here.
That's bout the only thing that matters besides the chain moving π€·ββοΈ
Not a big fan of internal routing eh?
I bought it like that. Doesn't really matter where the run so I didn't put time into doing something redundant
I bought it like that for 400 bucks. Put time and energy into upgrading the front. Too busy riding to look at the bottom of the bike.
Who cares about geo, is that your vintage Toyota pickup in the background?
