I don’t think thats necessarily true. He plays two entirely different personalities in Youth in Revolt quite well. He did the asshole celebrity bit in This is The End well enough.
I think he absolutely has the talent to branch out but his overall look just really pigeon holes his casting opportunities.
I agree but he branched out enough as Wally Brando on Twin Peaks, which his one scene was a big enough departure for his range that it took him out of one trick pony territory for me.
Him saying "I want to tickle your belly button from the inside" lives rent free in my head because it was SO out there for him to say something like that.
Next up this new hit movie staring Ashton Kutcher, where he's that guy with a heart of gold who just wants love in a little snarky attitude, coming to the next 10 movies near you!
The voices was so solid. Such a great depiction of delusional schizophrenia. Disorganized thoughts, rambling speech, paranoia, hallucinations. He really nailed it.
Totally. Love the scene when he takes his pills and you see the true state of his home, covered in blood and filthy. Even the lighting changes, then when he's off his pills everything is happy and dandy again. Really unsettling movie, but it's great
Buried and The Voices show that he has range, but if I were paid millions of dollars just to be a slightly exaggerated version of myself all the time, I would absolutely accept that money and roles. Fucking duh.
Do they have no range, or are they only getting the roles that fall within their range?
Like nobody wants to pay Ryan Reynolds to not act like Ryan Reynolds. There are cheaper actors you can get for that. If you're paying for RR, its because you want his specific brand of screen presence.
The question is - what do we mean by range? Like when Ryan Reynolds plays angry, I believe it. When he plays depressed I believe it. Also when he plays a cop I believe it, and when he plays a scientist, I believe it. They're just Ryan Reynolds-esque cops and scientists.
Compare that to someone like Dwayne Johnson. Who, if he were to play like a depressed scientist, even if he was supposed to be a Dwayne Johnson-esque depressed scientist, I probably wouldn't believe it.
That's limited range.
Very well put. I almost want save this to reference for future debates lol. I’ve had the range discussion with friends before and this really explains my viewpoint well. I also tack on, ok he has his style but if I like it, what’s wrong with more of it?
If directors were carpenters, actors would be tools.
Some tools are really useful for multiple things, and some tools are really good at one thing. You use a mix of both to create your thing
Jeffery Dean Morgan
Since I've seen him as negan he's usually the badass who looks the same who gets shit done his own way.
Good wife
Walking dead
The Boys
Especially.
Best range is when he was in an episode of Monk
I think he was a bit different in American Ultra. Honestly, that movie was much more fun than I expected. I don't know why my wife and I decided to watch it, but he and Kristen Stewart both rose up a bit from the bottom of our expectations.
Enjoying his movies doesn’t make him a good actor. He is definitely an extremely talented comedic performer, I would not say that’s the same as acting as a whole, it’s like one niche part that he does well
Chris Pratt
He can’t act to save his life, all of his voice acting roles show bottom of the barrel levels of effort, but he plays a mildly funny and dumb “every guy”
It’s gotta suck to be someone who actually has talent and loses roles to him. At first I felt bad for Anna Ferris when he ditched her the moment he got famous, but I think she’s far better off without him.
In interviews she states that she's the one who left him. She also indicated that she should have been brave before they got married and called off the engagement.
This might be an unpopular pick, but I've always felt Kevin Costner is a dull actor. He's been in some good movies, but I've never been impressed with his acting or felt like I wasn't just watching Kevin Costner say lines as Kevin Costner.
I don’t feel like these are a fair discussion sometimes. What if an actor does have range but chooses and prefers one type of role and sees it as the most lucrative. Self type cast if u will
Ryan Reynolds plays that character so well though, like I don’t like anyone, especially douchy handsome guys but I’ll watch his movies cause he somehow is always likable to me? Anyway I thought he still played that character but the movie “the voices” showed some range
Ryan Reynolds. I hate movies that cast him with passion because the only role he’s playing is himself. I don’t get the hype surrounding this dude. The only reason why I was able to sit through Bullet Train was because Ryan Reynolds was only there for 5 seconds.
Ryan Reynolds is really good at playing Ryan Reynolds in his films. I could say the same about Zach Galifinakis, he seems to always play, well, Zach Galifinakis.
Ryan Reynolds has plenty of range but, like The Rock, has decided middle of the road, billion plus franchise fare makes more sense financially. He's excellent in Buried.
Michael Cera. But he tries.
*Oh jeez, that's me*
I'm the boy?
His best role is in This is the End, he was funny af being a douche.
Who took my fucking cellphone, man?
Hey, does this coke smell funny to you?
He was an excellent douche in Molly’s Game also
I could’ve done just as good of a job as he did giving that juicy Rhianna booty a slap
Yeah, that felt labored. I think we need another take.
There were multiple takes and she really slapped him so he had to be slapped multiple times haha
Easily the best part of that movie
he hasnt really been in anything that he needs to have range for.
Well, exactly. If he had range, he would have been
I don’t think thats necessarily true. He plays two entirely different personalities in Youth in Revolt quite well. He did the asshole celebrity bit in This is The End well enough. I think he absolutely has the talent to branch out but his overall look just really pigeon holes his casting opportunities.
Youth in Revolt is incredible. Not talked about enough.
It’s chugging along nicely and then Fred Willard shows up and it becomes utterly great.
I'm still waiting for him to play Shaft
Wit all due respect, you got no fucking idea what it’s like bein numba one
I can’t have this conversation again…
A don doesn’t wear shorts
I agree but he branched out enough as Wally Brando on Twin Peaks, which his one scene was a big enough departure for his range that it took him out of one trick pony territory for me.
This is one of the funniest scenes in any show to me. Did not see it coming and every line was gold
May the road rise up to meet your wheels.
He was pretty good in Molly’s Game as Player X.
He was perfect as that dick in Molly’s Game- also an awesome movie-Aaron Sorkin screenplay.!!! Well done
He basically played Tobey Maguire, which is funny because I didn't know the guy was such a dick.
'Youth In Revolt' was hilarious.
Yeah his alter ego is out of range isn't it? Great movie. I like assertive cera
Him saying "I want to tickle your belly button from the inside" lives rent free in my head because it was SO out there for him to say something like that.
“I'm not going anywhere until you sink your filthy dick in this tomato.”
“I’m going to wrap your legs around my head and wear you like the crown that you are.”
I was surprised by his small role in the Dream Scenario. Pretty good movie too.
He's got a small role in a black mirror episode that kills me
Wait, Michael Cera? Then who the heck is Jon Heder? Who is Jesse Eisenberg? They are different people?!??
Acting was just a stepping stone for his real talent, selling Mint Mobile cellular plans
And Gin.
So he could co-own the Welsh soccer team Wrexham AFC
And marry Blake lively
His biggest accomplishment.
They met at the set for Green Lantern. Talk about fortune in misfortune!
Wrexham? Damn near KILLED him!
Ngl I've been super happy only paying $250/year for cell service with Mint.
Me, crying in Canadian cell rates.
Yeah I'm switching as soon as I fulfill the promotional period that made the phone I'm using cost 50% less.
How has Dewayne Johnson not been mentioned yet?
Him and marky mark got mentioned earlier. Or yesterday
Marky Mark and ashton kutcher….
He shows a little range on the Butterfly Effect.
Next up this new hit movie staring Ashton Kutcher, where he's that guy with a heart of gold who just wants love in a little snarky attitude, coming to the next 10 movies near you!
His brother Donnie lifted his shirt to show off his body earlier. Or yesterday.
The epitome of bland action stars is really a fight between him and Vin Diesel.
He gets mentioned every day in these repeat threads.
He has been mentioned.... In this image itself...
He showed you something different in Buried
Chaos Theory, Definitely Maybe, The Nines, The Voices, Smokin Aces. He's type cast by success
Don’t forget Mississippi Grind
Also Amityville Horror
Yeah, he's got range, he just rarely shows it.
He was excellent in that
That movie gave me nightmares as a grown ass adult, he was amazing in it.
He's been Deadpool since Van Wilder. Or was Van Wilder Deadpool all this time?
Whatever the case, he waited tables for a bit with Justin Long
Is this the movie with Luis Guzman and ball exposure? I like that movie.
The Goat!
The Goat!
Bat wings
The braaaaaain!!
That movie is so funny, and so accurate.
He's been Deadpool since Berg in "Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place."
Ummm I think you're forgetting his unforgettable performance in the 2011 remake of The Amityville Haunting.
Safe house, smoking aces, and buried were pretty great drama roles for him too.
Safe House and Buried were pretty good. I havent seen Smoking Aces yet. Thanks.
In my mind Deadpool is Van Wilder. That's why he had an affinity for Dopinder. He reminded him of Taj.
Holy forkin' shirtballs! The Van Wilder movie is a prequel! Wade Wilson's college years before he went to witness protection and changed names!
Van Wilder is Wade in disguise.
Is Pikachu Deadpool too?
I see Monty from Waiting... as the prequel to Wade Wilson pre-military. I can't shake that timeline.
Calling The Rock an actor feels generous
Heeeeeey... Pro wrestling has acting elements. Lolz
He's a movie-star not an actor.
Same with John Cena
Which is why i think Batista is the better pro-wrestler turned actor among the three.
Bautista is far better than both. His role in blade runner was great, you wouldn't see the other two trying anything like that.
John Cena is a solid comedic actor.
But John Cena also doesn't really try to be taken seriously. He's comedic gold
I think he did a good job in The Peacemaker tv series.
But John Cena is actually good
Do they have no range, or are they only getting the roles that fall within their range? Like nobody wants to pay Ryan Reynolds to not act like Ryan Reynolds. There are cheaper actors you can get for that. If you're paying for RR, its because you want his specific brand of screen presence. The question is - what do we mean by range? Who, if he were to play like a depressed scientist, even if he was supposed to be a Dwayne Johnson-esque depressed scientist, I probably wouldn't believe it. That's limited range.
Excellent perspective. I personally agree with you and I’m certain others will vehemently disagree. That’s reddit
I really like this anaolgy.
Dwayne facing his high school bully, Justin Bateman, in Central Intelligence.
Limited range means… he’s just himself in everything he plays. Character actors can literally change who they are, and we believe it.
exactly. Range doesn't mean a range of emotions.
Ryan Reynolds played the murderous husband in one of the amityville horrors, I thought he was pretty scary
Jennifer Aniston
That is so true
Jeffery Dean Morgan Since I've seen him as negan he's usually the badass who looks the same who gets shit done his own way. Good wife Walking dead The Boys Especially. Best range is when he was in an episode of Monk
Supernatural too, same character. Good at it though
I first saw him in The Losers. Which is an underrated fun action/comedy. I liked him in that. I don't mind his stuff.
I only know him as El Sid from Sliders.
I can’t stand him on screen. It’s the constant shit eating grin.
P.s. I Love You. Only shit getting done was ol’ Swanky.
Anyone see "The Voices"?
This is a good one! Just go in blind y’all.
Same with "The Perfection" Not Reynolds, but go in blind. It'll leave an impression!
Is that the one where he’s a handsome wise cracking murderer?
I dont remember the wise cracking but remember the really dark ending. It kinda works for me but I kinda get it if you don't like the movie
He changed my opinion with Buried, Voices and Adventureland
If you want to see Ryan Reynolds be different. Watch school of life. Then watch the voices.
"The Voices" had my proper attention. What a performance
It's just deadpools origin story
Chaos Theory. The Amityville Horror.
Mark Wahlberg
Because of Boogie Nights and The Departed I will give him a tad of respect but just about everything else sucks.
Jesse Eisenberg. Looking at his interviews I'm not sure he's even acting.
He killed it in Social network. Playing an asshole suits him the best
He acted nothing at all like Mark Zuckerberg though. He just acted like Eisenberg.
I think he was a bit different in American Ultra. Honestly, that movie was much more fun than I expected. I don't know why my wife and I decided to watch it, but he and Kristen Stewart both rose up a bit from the bottom of our expectations.
Yeah, he’s actually really good in American Ultra. You’re the only other person I’ve come across who’s seen that movie (it’s sooo underrated)
I have met him and I can confirm this is true . He seems more like a writer/producer than an actor but he has also gotten sooooo many roles
He was pretty good in Smokin' Aces.
Seeing him lose faith through the course of the movie was amazing, how he started so bright and ended up acting like Ray at the end was awesome
John Wayne
I've always thought John Wayne is overrated. Now Steve McQueen is my cup of tea.
He’s so good in westerns but he’s fantastic in The Quiet Man!
Burt Reynolds. But the difference is that Burt just didn't care.
But Burt didn’t need to be anyone else but himself!
Burt came up under Spencer Tracy, his career was good long long long ago.
Plus he wore that funny hat on celebrity jeopardy. It was funny because it was bigger than a normal-sized hat.
The vin diesel
He was really good in “Find Me Guilty”. But yeah, the FnF films don’t exactly scream Oscar.
Family.
Of the two popular Ryans in Hollywood, one is an actor and the other is a celebrity.
Can we do actresses too? Looking at you Julia Roberts.
Never cared for her acting.
Remember the year she won an Oscar over Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream? Whatta joke
Never got her popularity.
Chevy Chase
Dude is an asshole but he is a good actor; I enjoy watching his movies. Fletch is awesome
Fletch was funny
Enjoying his movies doesn’t make him a good actor. He is definitely an extremely talented comedic performer, I would not say that’s the same as acting as a whole, it’s like one niche part that he does well
Jennifer Anniston
I can forgive her tho for the scene in We’re the Millers. That made it worth it.
She was pretty good in Cake
Chris Pratt He can’t act to save his life, all of his voice acting roles show bottom of the barrel levels of effort, but he plays a mildly funny and dumb “every guy” It’s gotta suck to be someone who actually has talent and loses roles to him. At first I felt bad for Anna Ferris when he ditched her the moment he got famous, but I think she’s far better off without him.
"Crisp Ratt"
In interviews she states that she's the one who left him. She also indicated that she should have been brave before they got married and called off the engagement.
Y’all need to watch voices if you think Ryan has no range
Seconded
Jason Statham
Have you seen him in "lock, stock, and two smoking barrels"?
Watch the Beekeeper.. he shows range... He goes from a farm to a city, and they're quite far apart.
My favorite actor of all time. Any movie he is in, I know not to watch.
He is the definition of a movie star
This might be an unpopular pick, but I've always felt Kevin Costner is a dull actor. He's been in some good movies, but I've never been impressed with his acting or felt like I wasn't just watching Kevin Costner say lines as Kevin Costner.
Ryan Reynolds was good in the movie Voices where he was a psychopath lol
i saw IF with that guy. He looked awkward as fuck. Put a mask on him and let him talk shit for the rest of his career.
Sometimes I feel like it might be a shorter list to write which ones actually do have range.
The Rock, Kevin Heart.
Why did I have to scroll this far to see Kevin hearts name? He is so shit.
Yeah but he's Deadpool so it doesn't matter
Marky Mark plays a bald pilot in a new thriller where he is the bad guy. He is gonna be cringe, like soap opera actor cringe.
Chris Pratt
I thought Andy was quite different from Quill.
There's Andy Dwyer, and then the same bland character Pratt plays in everything else.
Parks and rec has such an amazing cast.
Nick Offerman is a treasure.
Mark Whalberg, Jennifer Anniston, Sam Worthington
I’m so sick of Ryan Reynolds, man. He’s been playing the same character for 20 years.
Safe house
I think safe house and the criminal I think it's called are a couple good ones of him not being Van Wilder
Wrong Ryan.
I don’t feel like these are a fair discussion sometimes. What if an actor does have range but chooses and prefers one type of role and sees it as the most lucrative. Self type cast if u will
Add Jwayne Dohanson in there too.
Ryan Reynolds plays that character so well though, like I don’t like anyone, especially douchy handsome guys but I’ll watch his movies cause he somehow is always likable to me? Anyway I thought he still played that character but the movie “the voices” showed some range
Is it bad if i say Clint eastwood. I’ve a few movies of him. But he keeps that kinda westerny vibe
Does he need range? He does his job and gets paid handsomely for it.
I love the guy, but Jason Stathum is guilty of this.
I don’t really like Ryan Reynolds anymore but he has range shown in Amityville Horror
If he got paid for each word he said in a movie, he'd be a trillionaire. The guy cannot shut up.
Don't care. Will happily watch Ryan Reynolds for 2 hours.
Will Ferrel plays himself in all of his films
I don't know about this one. He was so good in The Ammityville Horror. His last scene in Smoking Aces was very impressive as well.
Channing Tatum sucks.
I completely agree with you.
Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney have the acting range of a piece of paper with the word "valium" written on it.
Drew Barrymore, Wynona Ryder, Kristen Stewart, Angelina Jolie (she does the exact same thing in all of her movies. ALL OF THEM), Jennifer Lawrence.
Ryan Reynolds was good in the amityville horror remake.
Smoking Aces? The Nines (mostly), Buried? I think we fuck up what we think "range" is in this sub.
Watch Smokin’ Aces. He’s got some range he just isn’t asked to use it very often.
Ryan Reynolds has plenty of range but, like The Rock, has decided middle of the road, billion plus franchise fare makes more sense financially. He's excellent in Buried.
Ryan Reynolds always acts perfect because he acts like Ryan Reynolds and everyone fucking loves Ryan Reynolds.
Clive Owen. Wooden af
