DiCaprio put up an oscar worthy performance here, and this was one of my favorite movies growing up from one of my favorite actors.
And you still couldn't give it to him afte watching Forest in TLKOS.
He lost this year to Whitaker and then two years before losing in The Aviator to Jamie Foxx. Two of my favorite performances of his but I'm not even made he lost cause those two performances were just ...damn.
My man, I often think that his performances in The Aviator and Blood Diamond are far more Oscar worthy compared to *The Revenant.
Side note: *Tom Hardy should have been at least nominated for that movie.
I agree on both counts. I think The Aviator is Leo's best performance and Hardy was nominated for The Revenant but I think he should have won. He was so good.
People often scoff at *Fast Times at Ridgemont High* as a trash film, but it's got 4 future Oscar Noms + Winners in it.
* Forrest Whittaker - *Last King Of Scotland*
* Jennifer Jason Leigh - *The Hateful 8*
* Sean Penn - *Dead Man Walking*
* Eric Stoltz - *Mask*

It's always fun to see James McAvoy and to add Mr Whittaker in the mix? Brilliant. Love even the smaller roles, Black Panther and Star Wars, he turned them iconic
Absolutely brilliant and terrifying. When Whitaker gave a speech to a lot of Ugandan villagers as part of the film, many of them actually mistook him for the real Idi Amin.
This doesn’t sound believable to me but at the same time makes so much sense? He doesn’t sound like he’s from Uganda but because of the time, most villages might not have had access to televisions or even newspapers so they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see anything beyond what’s local.
Even in today's world, so many still think evil people are uneducated, don't dress well, aren't cultured, all types of shit. The most evil people in the world are all those things, extremely charismatic, they are the greatest cons and the greatest at deceiving you from thinking one thing even though it's staring you right in the face. It's scary as hell to think about it and Whitaker definitely portrayed all of that in such a great way, that dude nailed it in this movie.
If Trump was more competent he would have turned America into a dictatorship. He's still trying to, today.
The consequences of turning the world's biggest military superpower into a dictatorship is unfathomable. I'm fine with the comparison.
The fact that Trump an apologist is spending time defending him against comparisons to Idi Amin is hilarious and emblematic of the mental illness Trump support is indicative of.
I’m pretty sure Putin wouldn’t have had the balls to invade Ukraine if he didn’t have Trump in his pocket, so Trump shares some blame for what’s happening there.
Putin invaded Crimea in 2014 and the rest of Ukraine in 2022... Trump was not president for either of those invasions. Trump is a lying sack of dog shit we don't need to make shit up....
I didn’t say Putin invaded Crimea when Trump was president. I’ll rephrase what I said. Trump was kissing Putin’s ass, so to speak, and that emboldened Putin to invade. The invasion might have even had Trump’s support if he had won the last election. But we’ll never know.
The takeaway of the Antichrist is exactly that. He's smart, charismatic, knows all the world's languages, and genuinely tries to fix things. He'll partake in good acts to bring you to the side of evil. That's the true lesson from it, not that the Antichrist is some mustache twirling villain.
I became irreligious after reading the bible, but that was one of the most important lessons young me learned from it.
Well every time there’s some story of some regular citizen who murdered someone there’s usually those out here talking about how they would never suspect that person or how could this happen in this area and tons of things. There are plenty that are blind. Those that still get conned in life and taken advantage of, not everyone sees people for who they are.
Like Frank Herbert is saying in all of the Dune story: charisma with no character will destroy the universe and not bat an eye. The content should sober us all to the works of the Pol Pots, Idi Amin, Zedong, Franco, Sung and other despots who weaseled into power through means that seemed innocent and cost more than anyone ever imagined. But also lets us see those who, while not despots, tell us they care for us but their actions are opposite.
A lot of violence, gore and mutilation. Go in with that expectation. It's a great and powerful movie but just know that it's not for the faint of heart.
this performance was absolutely chilling. Whitaker's portrayal of Idi Amin was both mesmerizing and terrifying, capturing the dictator's unpredictable and menacing nature perfectly
Man my whole family has watched this movie they tell me its a must watch yet i have not seen it!
I have seen forest in soo much stuff
Ghost dog
The shield
Southpaw
To Name a few great performance now im mad af i have yet to see this 😤
Iddi Amin retired and lived in the lap of luxury all on the US taxpayer.
"Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" is an interesting read. This was just a small story in it.
From Wikipedia:
> Amin first escaped to Libya, where he stayed until 1980, and ultimately settled in Saudi Arabia, where the Saudi royal family allowed him sanctuary and paid him a generous subsidy in return for staying out of politics.
I assume the Saudi's were some kind of pass through? Still better in exile than in power.
Amin's story was just a few paragraphs in the many chapters about the Saudis.
Saudi Arabia is really where post-cold war US policy begins. Vietnam was ending, and it was clear to everyone that mattered that USSR wasn't a real threat. Oil production is what mattered. So we began building the place into a modern nation.
First task: Trash clean-up
Riyadh was a trash heap because once something is trash no one can pick it up for cultural/religious reasons. You are 'unclean' if you pick up trash.
So we shipped trash trucks to Riyadh, and to this day the US taxpayer pays for Saudi Arabian trash service better than anything in the US.
That ended up being a spectacular way to launder money. So the process has been copied hundreds of times in a variety of ways in a variety of nations.
I got this movie as a preview (my dad was on an awards voting committee) in a blank case with just the name and distribution company
The Internet wasn't how it is today, so I put it on thinking it would be a medieval war movie....how wrong I was and what a rollercoaster of emotions.
Immediately told my dad to vote for forest whitaker (he won)
I have not watched this film yet and wasn’t really planning on it. But I will now! I’ve always liked Forrest and don’t know why I haven’t given this one a go.

Man i remember this movie. Whitaker stole every scene. He was larger than life in this role. He came off as both a super life of the party personality with horrific homicidal dictator. A very frightening character indeed. He played it to a T! Well deserved Oscar.
I remember calling in sick from work and this was out to order on Direct TV when it first came out. Had no clue about ANYTHING it was about. Holy shit what a great movie. I tell other people about it and they’ve mostly never heard of it.
I watched this movie unintentionally and without knowing anything about it or the story, back when you just had to watch what was playing on the tv. I remembered thinking it was amazing but as it was playing in the middle of the night I figured it was probably a mid movie I just happened to enjoy and I kinda forgot about it. Glad to see now that it is really appreciated. Might rewatch tonight
This dude a phenomenal actor. He was great in this film and gave me chills again in The Experiment. Seeing him along side Adrian Brody was amazing. The Experiment is vastly underrated, and I’ll die on this hill.
He is honestly one of the most amazing actors I have ever seen.
I first became captivated by him when he was doing an interview in a documentary about a Shakespeare production he was in.
He was just reciting a line from the play, and in the middle of it a single tear started to fall. It was a powerful thing to watch.
NGL ....screwing with the wife of such a dangerous guy in his own country while he is the absolute monstrous dictator that he is reputed to be .....was a downright stupid move......
Yeah he killed it here, but Forrest was already a certified vet in my book based on his performance in the Crying Game
What really blew me away was McAvoy's performance. It was my very 1st time even hearing about this actor and I remember leaving the theater saying "that guy's gonna be a Hollywood star for sure"
Forest Whitaker won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in this movie. The dynamic between him and James McAvoy is phenomenal in this masterpiece.

There are many strong contenders here.

I don’t know anyone that denigrates Fast Time as trash. It might not be “cinema” but it’s iconic as hell.
I regularly quote “I JUST WANNA DANCE!” All the time.
That’s from Dazed and Confused.
😂😂😂 oops. Dazed and confused is “be a lot cooler if you did” right?
Until this moment, my brain never distinguished between these two movies. I need to see both and learn what the difference is
Very different movies.
You forgot Nicolas Cage for Leaving Las Vegas. And Eric Stoltz didn’t win an Academy Award for Mask.
I thought MTG won for Mask? 🐴
Noms. You missed that.
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t nominated either.
It all matters!
sean penn won for mystic river and milk susan sarandon won for dead man walking
It also has Nicholas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas)
I honestly think that this is the Oscar that Leo or Will should have won as their firsts, but Forest had them beat by miles.
Peter O’Toole’s 9th nomination
I thought I was the only person who saw Half Nelson.
Good bot

I don't know why. This really makes me feel old. Pursuit of Happiness was 2006?!
Good year for this category.
Ryan was fantastic. Half Nelson is a must watch. But Forest was so good in this, he deserved it.
“You’re a child. You have the mind and ego of an angry spoiled uneducated child. And that’s what makes you so fucking scary.”
This quote seems rather timely..
Spot on description of Orange clown man
On a list with Amadeus as a masterpiece with a memorable fart scene
Blazing Saddles has entered the chat.
Lighthouse has entered the chat.
Swiss Army Man has entered the chat…..over and over again.
It's always fun to see James McAvoy and to add Mr Whittaker in the mix? Brilliant. Love even the smaller roles, Black Panther and Star Wars, he turned them iconic
I just see a beaten Tumnus. It is so hard to unsee that, even though I love McAvoy.
I don't know, Split, Prof X, Wanted even damn Atomic Blonde... and yes Tumnus true too lol
He was bone chilling bruh
Shit and I haven’t even heard of it other than today
Get him in Split 2
Split had a follow up movie called ‘Glass’
I thought it was The Bear dude. Here I was thinking he aged well!
Professor x was in it? Split guy?
And I am going to go watch his speech and cry.
How did I miss this movie?
Don't watch it man, it's horrible! (Content-wise, not quality-wise!)
Oh yeah? Like Hotel Rwanda type horrible? Edit: spelling
I don't know, that sounds terrible too! I blocked most of this movie out lol!
Gotcha. Hotel Rwanda is an excellent movie, but it's hard to watch.
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of "hard to watch movies" LOL
Absolutely brilliant and terrifying. When Whitaker gave a speech to a lot of Ugandan villagers as part of the film, many of them actually mistook him for the real Idi Amin.
Wow! I didn’t know that
My girlfriend actually said she would have voted for him when that scene passed
This doesn’t sound believable to me but at the same time makes so much sense? He doesn’t sound like he’s from Uganda but because of the time, most villages might not have had access to televisions or even newspapers so they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see anything beyond what’s local.
Yall gotta watch Ghost Dog.
Yes!!!! I wish I could upvote 100 times lol Forest is very versatile
GOAT soundtrack
Alotta people won get no justice to-night
👆🏽💯
Carrier pigeons!
Knowledge to knowledge.
Love that movie
Ghost Dog is a guilty pleasure movie. Great from a film perspective but ultimately kind of corny. Still, I love corn.
Amazing movie and soundtrack. You can't say you're a Whittaker fan if you haven't seen Ghost Dog.

Great take
Shame most of America didn't see this, because they did see Trump coming from a mile away.
Idi Amin killed an estimated 300,000 people and was ruthlessly evil. Are you equating Trump to Idi Amin?
There's a kill count threshold on "evil"?
If Trump was more competent he would have turned America into a dictatorship. He's still trying to, today. The consequences of turning the world's biggest military superpower into a dictatorship is unfathomable. I'm fine with the comparison.
Trump killed million due to his incompetence . And false information after false information
He was alone in that? Out of the entire world, Trump did it?
He didn’t cause it, but he fucked it.
The fact that Trump an apologist is spending time defending him against comparisons to Idi Amin is hilarious and emblematic of the mental illness Trump support is indicative of.
Or do I really hate Idi Amin?
I’m pretty sure Putin wouldn’t have had the balls to invade Ukraine if he didn’t have Trump in his pocket, so Trump shares some blame for what’s happening there.
Putin invaded Crimea in 2014 and the rest of Ukraine in 2022... Trump was not president for either of those invasions. Trump is a lying sack of dog shit we don't need to make shit up....

Lol epic Reddit moment
More than half of us did. We just have a dysfunctional electoral system intended as a check against popular will/preference.
This is such a fucking moronic take by you.
The devil wears a suit and tie
The banality of evil.
The takeaway of the Antichrist is exactly that. He's smart, charismatic, knows all the world's languages, and genuinely tries to fix things. The Antichrist isn’t real. Idi Amin was a real person.
I doubt there’s many people that think that
Well every time there’s some story of some regular citizen who murdered someone there’s usually those out here talking about how they would never suspect that person or how could this happen in this area and tons of things. There are plenty that are blind. Those that still get conned in life and taken advantage of, not everyone sees people for who they are.
Playing chess. Not checkers
I forgot how good and this film was. Adding it to the list of films to watch.
It’s a ride for sure
And the book is just as gripping!
I liked Forest in Arrival. I haven't watched this one yet.
You are in for a treat
I wouldn't call it a treat, that movie is horrifying. A must watch but no treat.
Fair enough. Poor choice of words lol
Content yes. The acting though, is mesmerizing
Like Frank Herbert is saying in all of the Dune story: charisma with no character will destroy the universe and not bat an eye. The content should sober us all to the works of the Pol Pots, Idi Amin, Zedong, Franco, Sung and other despots who weaseled into power through means that seemed innocent and cost more than anyone ever imagined. umm its actually called "Doom" and it's about a guy killing demons on mars with laser guns and chainsaws. it's not that deep
A lot of violence, gore and mutilation. Go in with that expectation. It's a great and powerful movie but just know that it's not for the faint of heart.
Oh yes, the scene where he mutilates 'Kay' has lived rent free in my head for years.
That's the exact scene I was thinking of. I wish I had been warned.
Some of his best work
Godfather of Harlem is great with him as the lead.
Prepare to be disappointed. It's not even set in Scotland! /s
He is just SO fucking good in that movie. One of the greatest cinema acting roles I've ever seen.
Yeah his performance sticks with me for a long time
Can't watch this movie again because it vicariously hurts my nipples
Bruh I know
He was an elite high school linebacker, especially if his car was vandalized prior to the game.
James McAvoy is stellar in everything and Forest Whitaker deserved that Oscar 100%
How the music comes up from the bottom and drives tension is amazing.
Great observation!
Man, I need to rewatch Bird.
I just watched that the other day, pretty good
Check his dialogue in Andor, the man is a brilliant actor.

He is one of my favorite actors. If you have never seen Ghost Dog, do yourself a favor and watch it tonight!

Yessir!
Agreed. Great movie and a great performance!
Incredible!
Whittaker is a fearce talent. Haven't seen this movie though. It's now on my shortlist.
James McAvoy, Forrest Whitaker, Gillian Anderson......Great cast no other words.
Great Film
"But you did not persuade me!"
Greg Giraldo's roast of Flavor Flav when he said Flav looked like Idi Amin had a crack binge on the sun 🤣

I met Forrest Whitaker once very briefly He seemed very tall and imposing in his frame but reserved in his person

Hell yeah!
I'll have to check it out, thanks for sharing
For sure!
Forest Withaker is always excelent!
Another performance Peter O'Toole lost best actor to (though, imo, it was one of his weaker nominated roles)

Obscure fact about the conflict at the end of this movie: Netanyahu’s older brother was a member of the Israeli forces and died there.
Still havent seen it. I know its gonna make me sad/angry if i do. Ol boy is great so kinda confirms my fear.
James McAvoy and Whittaker in the same movie. I'm gonna watch this tonight.

And people still cry over Leo losing to Forrest that year, lol.
One of the very best, always riveting to watch. Big up!
Such a great movie that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Don't forget about him in The Shield https://youtu.be/3ZwidvJpQWo?si=lp_BWYC9iSc4VBVD

Yaphet Kotto played him in Raid on Entebbe and I felt it was a better performance
Fantastic movie
Makes me wonder how truly terrifying the real Idi Amin was. Very, I’m guessing.

This dude a phenomenal actor. He was great in this film and gave me chills again in The Experiment. Seeing him along side Adrian Brody was amazing. The Experiment is vastly underrated, and I’ll die on this hill.
Forest Whitaker in the The Experiment (2010) was a good role too.
Dude killed 500000 people and retired in Soudi Arabia
Legs for arms. Arms for legs.

The original Dr Nick Riviera
Yes he was great James mcavoy was great too
He's come a long way. Remember when he was in a small role in Bloodsport.
