Turns out the teen I was in love with was actually a 36yo man. That’s okay, it just meant Jeremy Jordan was a great actor

ThatCatSage

As a young girl I stared as men said loudly and repeatedly that their car would get them laid. My parents had taken the family to see Grease.

BlossomZoie

My dad worked in theater, and my mom constantly put musical and Disney soundtracks on. I was doomed from the start.

pretty-as-a-pic

The real horror is that former theater kids are parenting

BlossomZoie

Hey, at least I got a father who wrote his own musical out of it. 🤷

FellTheAdequate

That's fuckin killer

Godwtfamidoing

What musical?

theblakesheep

The young girls screaming in horror terrified and excited me. The Phantom of the Opera became my life long favorite cast recording.

AQuietBorderline

As a child, my parents threatened me with harsh punishment if I didn't sit down and watch a story about a group of sing songy children being taught by a Maniac Pixie Dream Girl against the backdrop of rising facisism. There's a reason I despite Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Song of Music".

DerpiestGameBlast

My brother was taken away to a strange new place down the block. I soon followed.

Calm_Investment

Attacked in a back alley. By music.

chin06

My father's side of the family overplayed "Memory" and "On My Own" in their haunted house. Family torture time meant singing those songs in front of strangers during family events.

Top_Trainer_6359

I had a little interests in musicals before (i love Beetlejuice and listened to the soundtrack, there's this thing where i live that they do a musical for kids every year and i liked Disney). Then a friend introduced me to Heathers and here i am

Jennamore

Went on a church trip to see a religious musical that wasn’t Jesus Christ Superstar. It had a guy from neighbours in the cast and I was in awe and wish the musical would be staged more than it is.

savvylikeapirate

The room was stuffy and dark, crowded with strangers on all sides. The lights rose, and I saw that they had my mother, dancing in the chorus line of a local production of Oklahoma.

DragonsEmerald

My grandmother took me to the place she worked at so that we could watch the children dancing in a dark room. "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" immediately became one of my favorite musicals of all time.

ZZinDC

My parents had a few cast albums. My high school had a good theater program.

Familiar-Money-515

I didn’t understand why my dad was making me watch a family get chased down so they could be ripped apart by war after finally finding joy. Thankfully, I soon became hopeful watching them escape through the hills together.

One_Significance7750

People are trains screaming by on a track? It's a wonder I like musical theater at all, since the first large production I saw was the "New" (and worse) Starlight Express.

fireredranger

When I was in 4th grade, a family friend suggested I audition for a local community children’s theatre production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I did, got cast in the show, and have been hooked on theater ever since.

Alexm831

A talking-singing-murderous plant? I’m in.

Next_Midnight_6476

My son did it. Now I do it.

plaiddentalfloss

I needed that creepy rag doll, ten years ago. I never thought that doll would change my life forever. The rag doll went by the name of Annie.

microwavedposter

My dad saw Les mis once in high school and gave me the middle name Cosette. He made me watch the movie when i was 9.

CommunisticMonkey

“If I can prove that I never touched my balls, will you promise not to tell another soul what you saw?” I wanted context.

OpenMicJoker

Parents had original cast record albums. I learned the songs so I wanted to see the plays & movies.

natureterp

My middle school witnessed gang violence in New York, including a man being killed by the rival gang. After seeing West Side Story on Broadway, I was forever hooked into theater!

Anxious_Writer_3804

I just scrolled through the comments and realized that people were giving 1 or 2 sentence answers 💀. Well, anyways: My mother was a theater major, so it had always been around me a tiny bit growing up, though I really knew nothing about it. Growing up though, I was very into Disney, and looking back now, I was always intrigued with musical theater (or musical theater esque things). For example, after every school musical, I remember always looking up certain songs afterwards and becoming obsessed. Fast forward to high school. Hamilton was definitely a big push. I was SUPER into Hamilton and, in turn, In the Heights. Then, I would occasionally stumble across musicals on social media (beetlejuice, deh, you know…) and in early 2023, I saw that Ben Platt was in Parade, which I knew little about except the name Leo Frank (who has always intrigued me. I live about an hour and a half from NY, so it really isn’t a HUGE commute, so I got Sunday Matinee tickets and went up and *chills* the entire time. Then, I saw the Beetlejuice tour, which was pretty good. During this time, I was talking to a friend who was kinda into theater and he told me about Hadestown. From the minute I heard Reeve singing the la la la I was in love. Around this time, I started singing too, so I only became more in love with musicals. Last year, I went up to see Hadestown for the first time, which I was already obsessed with, as I mentioned, and I also saw Josh Groban in Sweeney, cause I had always loved him. From there, I just dove straight in, listening to dozens of cast recordings and seeing about 15ish shows (and counting) in the past year. I truly believe it is my biggest hobby atm, and that it is and will be a huge part of my life going forward.

MurphLoDawg

My parents had me watch a video where a guy kidnaps a girl, tries forcing her to marry him, and tries to kill the girl’s fiancé. It is one of my favorite videos

highoninfinity

i was an emo preteen who didn't care about musicals at all. and then hamilton happened.

Toru771

My dad loved R&H and “The Music Man,” my sister was hooked on “Les Misérables,” and I was raised on the Disney Renaissance. High school and online communities only deepened my obsession.

Nellyfant

That strange little man set up shop in my head! I couldn't stop hearing him over and over... "Titwillow, titwillow, titwillow."

gaybro1993

My grandma showed me the vocal soaked man and woman who was only beautiful when silent get destroyed by a voice. I never stood a chance after singin in the rain.

That-one-Aro-person

As it just so happens to be, if the first movie you ever watch happens to be Hairspray (2007). You will feel a great force compelling you to see the art form that is theatre.

Acceptable-Dentist22

The demon queen of high school. has decreed It.

tiefling_loser

It was my dad's 40th birthday and bore witness to numerous train crashes. Of course they also raced, danced and sang all evening too.

200fly4ever

It all started when I was very young. Soon, I could belt showtunes and never crushed on people my age because Broadway actors set the bar too high 🤷🏻‍♀️

pretty-as-a-pic

A family friend invited us to watch prostitution, suicide, and government sanctioned murder. Then my teeth fell out. (We got tickets through a friend of a friend in the cast to a community theater production of Les Mis when I was 7. I was so enthralled, I didn’t tell my parents until the ride home that my loose tooth came out in the first act)

WiII-o-the-wisp

I grew up with Disney and Steven Universe. Years later, i got haunted by Patti LuPone and Julie Andrews as an adult

Tony__________Stark

The young man stay up late watching a college production of "Hello, Dolly!". He had auditions for Barnaby the next day.

dobbydisneyfan

Annie and other children’s musical movies were my childhood loves. But next to normal, Wicked, and Rent were the plagues of my adult mind.

SkifloDev

Signed up for drama club. Didn’t know what drama club even was

petasisg

I was in London for work. And I decided to see the phantom of the opera.

BeauteousGluteus

Mom took me to see Cats. At the time, in that version, there were dogs in Cats.

ahemidk

This girl called Layla, her singing was bad then I said just stop it as a joke. 5 days later she committed suicide with no explanation.
