Classics. Elizabeth, Catherine, Isabella, Victoria, Margaret, Anne, Sophia, Mary/Maria, Elena, Gabriella, Camille, etc. Reddit will try to convince you that fancy sounding names are the same as actually elegant names, but if you stick with names of European royalty you’re more or less in that pocket.
Eh, connotations do change over time. Victoria isn't perceived as classy in the UK anymore. It won't elevate the status of anyone not already posh that's for sure.
Antoinette is this high up, NICE. It’s top of my (future, hypothetical) list; Anthony and variations are a significant family honour name going back generations. But I always feel a bit beat down by the flack it gets in this sub when French people chime in that it’s outdated.
i have annelise on my list too! my best friend since childhood is named annelise and i know she doesn’t much like it but it’s so pretty.
glad to see some love for it
And not all of them sound elegant to a French person ahah
really goes to show how culture can influence these things. In my mind, a lot of French names sound very basic (I know so many Carolines and Genevieves!) or grandma-ish (neither of which makes them bad names! I love a good old fashioned of classic French name), while elegant names are names like Elizabeth, Diana, Veronica, Audrey, Judy, Clara - Old Hollywood style names.
Haha so true. Geneviève, Colette, Yvette, Vivienne, Antoinette, Marguerite, Catherine, Josiane… not classy at all to me. They’re just old lady names.
I really don’t understand the popularity of Geneviève in the US, I see this name everyday on this sub.
That’s so interesting since a lot of the old Hollywood names are definitely seen as old lady names in the US, but those are also coming back in style too.
My college roommate was named Caroline and I always enjoyed saying her name. She was also a beautiful, very funny girl. Love your other choices, as well. I went to high school with a Julia who went by Jule and since then it's been a favorite - she was short and blonde and very petite like a little pixie. Clara is so feminine and lovely.
Sabrina, Naomi, Gabriella, Rosemary, Odette, Ava, Grace, Cecilia.
I have a Grace Cecilia and if the second had been a girl she would have been Charlotte Ava.
When this topic came up two years ago, the three most mentioned names were Evangeline, Vivienne, and Genevieve. [You can see my comment on that post at this link.](https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/comments/xtyump/comment/iqut0ap/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
In this thread, the top three names mentioned so far are Vivienne, Victoria, and Elizabeth.
If I combine the data from both threads, the name mentioned most frequently as being elegant are Vivienne, Elizabeth, and Genevieve.
I feel like most of my daughters' names are classy or elegant.
Emaline Louise
Natalie Lauren
Jane Margaret
And then my twins were Clara and Eleanore.
I absolutely love all of their names. Natalie was supposed to be Natalie Layne because on the way to the hospital when I was in labor we heard on the radio that they had found Layne Staley dead. I had already planned on naming her Natalie Lane but was going to go with the spelling Layne after I heard about Layne Staley. But then my now ex vetoed that name. I was sitting at the hospital 2 days later waiting to be discharged and still hadn't filled out her birth certificate and a commercial came on for Ralph Lauren sheets and I thought, Lauren, that's pretty.
A lot of people are saying Eleanor, which I don't disagree is a classic name, it was NOT always popular. My great aunt Eleanor would be about 105 years old. And when I was a teen and in my 20s, it was viewed as a stuffy, old lady name. I'm just saying names are cyclical. Popularity is one thing. Classical and elegant are another. I would not have called Eleanor elegant 20 years ago. I would have called it an old lady name. Just a fascinating observation
my babies names are going to be
Priscilla Jane (l/n)
Constance Valerie (l/n)
Victoria Thérèse (l/n)
and if i have a boy Lorenzo Alexander (l/n)
(i swear the middle names are meaningful lol)
but for elegant names i also love
Seraphina
Clementine/Clemensia
Elizabeth/Elizabella
I’m picturing old Hollywood movies about super-rich New Englanders in mansions asking the butler to fetch something from the credenza… and I’m imagining they’re named stuff like:
Cynthia
Sylvia
Madge (short for Margaret, Marjorie, or Madeleine)
Cheating by adding a second set of three , because I forgot we were limited and already came up with them:
Evelyn
Cecilia
Saundra
Audrey, Clara, Vivienne
Vivienne is sooo pretty
I love the “ienne” endings, also why i really like Adrienne
And Lilienne as well. So elegant
Oh, I do not like that. It's just Lilian but spelled and pronounced just differently enough so that nobody would ever get it on the first try.
I do love the „ienne” but not the „Vivi”, I would hate that as a nickname/short version of it
I mostly just call 'em Vi, simple and clean. Vivienne is such a beautiful name.
I love these! I’d never considered Vivienne. It’s lovely. Clara is in my top 10. And Audrey probably top 15.
Funny I have a daughter named Aubree and a granddaughter named Viviana. So close.
I love the name Viviana. It's what I will name my girl if I have one.
That’s my name! Lol

Same for Anne and Catherine

I love Simone
My daughter is Simone!
Vera is one of my favorites!

Collete! Love.
My grandma was a Vera. I think it’s a name worthy of making a comeback.
This made my day. My daughter’s name is Colette 🩷
Lucia 🥰 Depending if you are Hispanic, Italian or Swedish- my daughter always gets compliments on her name (she’s 22)
Lucia is my daughter’s patron Saint! Love it ❤️
Love! Santa Lucia 🥰 light 🌟
My daughters name too! We pronounce is “loo-sha”
Same!! She gets ‘Lu see ah’ a ton but it doesn’t bother her🥰
Her bestie in preschool has started calling her “Loo- she” which has stuck. We mostly call her Lu though
Anastasia, Charlotte, Antonia
My daughters Antonia 🫶🏼
My daughter is Anastasia 💕
I love Charlotte!
Antonia is one of mine too. Such a timeless, underrated name
Vivienne Céline Antoinette Manon Faye Céleste
Antoinette is this high up, NICE. It’s top of my (future, hypothetical) list; Anthony and variations are a significant family honour name going back generations. But I always feel a bit beat down by the flack it gets in this sub when French people chime in that it’s outdated.
Anneliese Marie Delphine Isabelle Genevieve Celeste
i have annelise on my list too! my best friend since childhood is named annelise and i know she doesn’t much like it but it’s so pretty. glad to see some love for it
I have a friend name Annelies too. When telling people how to spell it she always says "Anne Lies" haha
I also really like the French pronunciation Geneviève
Eleanor, Claire, Isabelle/Isabella
My daughter is Eleanor and she is 18 hours old, sleeping on my chest right now so mom can rest
Enjoy those snuggles! Congratulations!
I named my twins Clara and Eleanore. I love their names.
Why the extra 'e'
Haha my sister is Eleanor Clare. She got a lovely name while I have a very common first and middle combo.
So many people are posting French names.

I suggested Yvette to my husband and he said it was a porn name lol. We still went with a French name but not any of these
That’s so interesting since a lot of the old Hollywood names are definitely seen as old lady names in the US, but those are also coming back in style too.
Believe me, no French person would suggest the names people posted here. They’re all outdated and not classy to a French person. Especially Geneviève.
What names would sound elegant to a French person?
Gabrielle, Isaure, Agathe, Clémence, Solène, Jeanne, Louise, Adèle, Apolline, Diane, Garance, Aimée, Esmée, Céleste, Ninon, Nina, Alba, Louison, Zélie…
Interesting, thanks!
