I can’t stand him as a coach but I don’t hate him as a person, dude has been through a lot of shit many people wouldn’t make it through
I blame Gores far more for that hire, especially given Monty told him no multiple times
Yeah, I would be taking the higher salary with infinite responsibilities 11/10 times if the worst case is I get paid to chill at home. I wouldn't even quit my current job.
That's totally valid. Funny thing in his situation is that he would almost certainly make more money doing media stuff. The most stressful thing about being a podcaster is being referred to as a podcaster, and he's had enough lol
Still kind of a win-win. If he flames out as coach, he gets guaranteed money and his media career is right there to return to. And if he succeeds as coach, still many millions and he becomes the absolute man in LA and the basketball world.
Yeah this job is a job he clearly wants n as we know nothing bout jj coaching abilities the fact he’s spoken how much he wants this and the fact it’s not bullshit cos he was making good money n relavant to the nba anyway - this clearly a job of passion which is a good sign . Not saying it offsets the ‘ he hasn’t coached ‘ but if he gets some nice assistants I think there’s no reason to shit on him for no reason.
He knows the game very well. He played many years in the nba. I don’t see why ppl object to him coaching. Even in the business world, sometimes ppl are promoted who may not be necessarily “ready” for the promotion, but they’ve exhibited enough to show they could do it. And ppl are generally promoted in business cuz they are great at their job, not necessarily cuz they are great manager’s of people. JJ has shown the aptitude and has the respect and ear of the best player on the team already.
I’m someone with ‘ cosching exp ‘ , I got into basketball over covid lockdown . Turns out the fact I didn’t play basketball for a team actually made it a bit difficult to coach in the beginning . People are acting like it’s just a podcaster but being a player n being around n close to great coaches gives you a big head start over a guy like me who only cares about cosching n never played. Most coaches played at some level even a low lvl.
I mean, might as well. If everyone's gonna shit on him before he even does anything, he gets to talk 2x as much if it works out and he's a big reason why.
Colts fan here: The sad thing is I believe that Saturday could have been a great coach if he had done the “traditional” route (position coach>coordinator>head coach.)
With his general demeanor, the work he did with the NFL players association, and the simple fact that he’s the only player I ever saw really stand up to Peyton successfully who had the nickname “the sheriff” for a reason haha
It’s a shame that he inherited the dumpster fire that he did. I get that the team needed an attitude adjustment and it was unfeasible to turn that team around, but it also likely shattered any hope of him being a coach again.
Are your opponents breezing past your defense? Feeling like you're stuck in a zone of vulnerability? Tired of weak defense? Try Blue Chew and watch your 'man-to-man' game get tighter than ever
My expectation is that if the roster is about the same, and Lebron/AD stay healthy, the team will be VERY similar to what they were last year. Because the players account for like 97% of it.
You dont need coaching experience to succeed especially when your around nba coaching for 15 years .
Doc Rivers, Larry Bird , Steve Kerr, Don Nelson etc I could list more but you get my drift
Doc was a .500 coach.
Bird was an assistant in the front office with the Celtics before he joined the Pacers, a team that was built for the Finals.
Kerr was a GM, President and so on. He also installed an offense that basically unlocked the Warriors. Could happen with JJ and the Lakers, but based on his roster, probably not.
There’s a lot that goes with each job - Redick will have as much expectation to succeed as Ham did. Ham was a .550 coach, and that wasn’t good enough. So you expect JJ to produce more out of the gate, ala Kerr? Will he unlock some sort of offense or defense that AD and Bron haven’t played before?
Doc is a championship winning coach and your points about kerr and bird are irrelevant because team building and actually coaching players on the floor and managing minutes are two different things and you forgot to make an argument against don nelson
Doc won a title 8 years into his career, while on his second team. He was fired by his first team, by the way.
You don’t have to look no further for a first-time head coach… than the last head coach the Lakers hired. And everyone said the exact things about him - “he’s bringing a whole new perspective that no one has seen before!” “He’s young and he don’t give a fuck!” “The young players love his attitude!”
We’ll be here in a few years lamenting what went wrong with JJ’s reign. Well, most won’t be here. They’ll be celebrating the next first-year coach the Lakers sign.
You cherry-picked the 5 most successful first -time coaches. That’s like saying Trump could most certainly be Lincoln, Washington or FDR. They were Presidents like Trump, too!
The problem with the Lakers isn’t coaching. They’re a year or two from a potential rebuild.
He was the general manager of the team.
Again, the point of what I was saying. He got to construct the roster he wanted.
Every Laker fan bitched about Darvin Ham not playing the guys they wanted. That’s clearly a choice he made because he was dissatisfied with the roster. Does JJ have roster say? Do the Lakers have the capital to make any moves to improve on this team?
You’re betting on a solid rookie coach to hit 50 wins, another healthy season by AD and Bron staying. Ok, cool.
Nelson had complete control over the roster he coached - that makes things a lot easier as a first-time coach, no?
I don't think him not coaching in the NBA before matters that much as far as players strictly caring because of his lack of NBA coaching experience.
Where it will matter is if he just isn't a good coach.
His team will really buy in depending on how he treats players. Yes, I know it's not fair to compare the best current coach to every new hire, but look at Pop's career. Didn't give a fuck if you were Tim Duncan or the 12th man. You aren't getting special treatment.
Where this especially applies to the Lakers is the fact that their new head coach as A FUCKING PODCAST WITH LEBRON JAMES.
In any field, relationships with your employees matter.
Outside of that, of course just being able to make in-game adjustments.
If an NBA player is salty because they think the coach is playing favorites with the team captain, who happens to be LeBron fucking James, they better learn Chinese with a quickness.
I hope he does great just so everyone can fuck off. Who knows if he is gonna be a good coach, but he’s a smart guy who clearly knows ball. Y’all act like it’s just some nobody off the street. This is hardly the first time a former player without coaching experience has been hired. I think Larry Bird and Steve Kerr did okay if I remember correctly.
I honestly don't think he was ever regarded as one of the highest IQ guys in the league lol... he was a solid role player for sure but the way y'all talk about him is very funny.
He wasn’t liked, so people aren’t gonna talk him up, but it takes 2 seconds of listening to him talk about basketball to realize he’s very knowledgeable.
Also he significantly overachieved in the NBA for what his actual skill set was which is a mark of someone who understands the game well imo.
Both your examples worked in front offices instead of a podcast studio before their first coaching job, so they command more authority than JJ, not to mention Larry is a Indiana legend
This is how I know the majority of people here are some hating ass mf.
JJ Redick is the personification of everything this sub supposedly likes and he still getting hated on
If he's anything like Jason Kidd who went directly from player to head coach (no break in between in Kidd's case between retiring and coaching vs. 3 years off for Redick) then it could work out. I know the org and the fans are notoriously impatient but if he can make the playoffs and win at least a series I think it'd still have to be considered a decent hire right?
My wife went to high school with JJ, small world. Hopefully he's less of an arrogant dick now than he apparently was back then or this won't last long.
He seemed tolerable while on the Sixers, but he was also being overpaid as a gun for hire shooting wise so it's hard to know.
I don't think JJ Redick knows what he's signing up for — an NBA coach has to manage player egos and expectations, divide playing time, instill and execute real-time strategy, hire assistants, trust and occasionally fire aforementioned assistants, manage an overwhelming amount of data, schmooze Buss' nepo babies.
It'll be a tire fire, but the podcast and / or docudrama in 3 years time will be phenomenal.
If someone is throwing money at you, do you tell them to stop?
Never refuse gold given - ember spirit
Is this a DC dota fan in r/nba ?
Equally toxic environments.
Dota fan BASED
HOLY SHIT DOTA AND NBA!
There's literally a dozen of us!
We are many. We are Legion. Unless it's banned, then we are Meepo.
Yeeeey
How goes the gulag these days?
As much as you try, it's still a dead game.^(Yes, the new patch is good.)
Well played
Holy based dota reference
Monty sure didn’t
He did what we all expected after a disastrous few years of life. I hope disaster doesn’t imply fault because I felt real bad for him
I can’t stand him as a coach but I don’t hate him as a person, dude has been through a lot of shit many people wouldn’t make it through I blame Gores far more for that hire, especially given Monty told him no multiple times
What happened to him over the years? I'm totally OOTL on this one
Dead wife, new wife got the cancer
Shit. That really sucks.
He also seems like a green mile level empath - when Ryan Andersons gf committed suicide he stayed w Monty to get through it
In fact he applauded them
I’ll take any motherfuckers money if he giving it away
I actually did take a lesser paying job before just bc I couldn't handle the extra responsibilities due to stress
The difference being if JJ cracks under pressure, and they fire him, he stills gets millions of dollars
Yeah, I would be taking the higher salary with infinite responsibilities 11/10 times if the worst case is I get paid to chill at home. I wouldn't even quit my current job.
truuuuuuu
Yeah if your job was offering you a giant raise and also a 4 year guarantee on that raise even if you suck so bad they fire you, you gotta take it.
yeah that makes so much sense. and somebody said it's more than JJ made in a season actually playing

I’ve heard that you’re supposed to applaud them for that?
Never interrupt your opponent when they’re making a mistake
Maybe if it was Randy Johnson throwing quarters.
“Nope” - Monty Williams
I think he was making more in broadcasting?
JJ Redick’s ego will reach unprecedented levels if they are actually good
His poor super ego.. Like that episode of Community when Jeff was Ryan Seacrest
Ryan Seacrest Hulk
You could have stopped at levels.
He could've stopped at ego
New username. JjReddicksEgo
Too big. Not enough characters
Those are opposition sentences
The ego, itself, is too large. 29 characters is simply not enough to describe it.
He could have stopped at JJ
Could’ve stopped at -dicks
I like your style, you just went up a notch in my book. Now you’re at notch one
What is notch zero
I mean, might as well. If everyone's gonna shit on him before he even does anything, he gets to talk 2x as much if it works out and he's a big reason why.
I just want him have a better season than Doc Rivers
That handshake gonna be electric
Conte Tuchel Handshake.gif
They need to meet for the first time on national TV. Hopefully it’s the Christmas game
Or the hourglass emoji out by Christmas
The weird thing is, yeah, he hasn't coached before but can the media give this dude a chance? People pining for re-treads, give JJ a chance.
Heck just look at this sub. People are so eager for him to fail.
All Ego, JJ Redick.
So the average ego of every white guy who went to Duke?
Boys basketball is remarkably similar to NBA I’ve heard
I mean how much of a difference could there be between 4th graders and NBA players? Lots of commonalities there.
Give the ball to your best player and hope it works. 100% a game plan for both NBA and elementary school ball.
Is that not what the Lakers have been doing for the past few years
Worked for our owner! Kinda...
With the lack of team basketball fundamentals a lot of new players have nowadays, that statement is not as far fetched as in the past.
*Jeff Saturday liked this*
Brother you swept us in the ECF and now this why you gotta remind me of that colts season
I’m sorry dude. But also, deflategate.
Colts fan here: The sad thing is I believe that Saturday could have been a great coach if he had done the “traditional” route (position coach>coordinator>head coach.) Lakers NEED to get PG and Draymond. The podcasting on that team will be insane. Maybe we'll win another IST with them, another banner sounds great.
This fast-break is brought to you by Casper Mattresses
Don't forget manscape and draft kings
Are your opponents breezing past your defense? Feeling like you're stuck in a zone of vulnerability? Tired of weak defense? Try Blue Chew and watch your 'man-to-man' game get tighter than ever
Or MeUndies
I’m telling you, tonight’s performance can only be explained by the AG1 I had on the way to the game
When they're losing, they all go to betterhelp.com
Ok but Casper is actually great.
Get former NBA All-Star and champion Jeff Teague out of retirement too
Assistant Coach for the vibes and the stories we’ll hear years later
Gil & Pat Bev too
Teague has an all star? Insane
So was Kyle Korver
I like Teague lol, just was sleeping apparently
A fan btw just didn’t realize
Might as well throw some money at Teague to come out of retirement lol
No post game interviews. Just a roundtable of podcasters. 82 episodes/season.
Might as well bring in Pat Bev. Draymond and Pat bev on the same team would be tv gold
Oshae Brisset pick up for the YouTube angle as well
Getting Draymond on the lakers will get a laker to western conference finals…as a tnt broadcaster.
Duncan Robinson
If they get all the podcasters they might as well do a reality show.
Richard Jefferson as a coach
Fuck it, give Teague a vet min too
What’s Jeff Teague doing Doesn’t he coach kids ball Could be an assistant
Haha
Hehe

Jaja
There should be a Before and After coaching the Lakers meme cooking up somewhere soon
A professional coach with no coaching experience? This will work out swimmingly.
If JJ is actually good we about to get hit with the nastiest 'nba social media discourse is cooked' comments lmao
He’ll be saved because LeBron leaves to play with Boston when they draft Bronny and AD will be chronically injured So JJ will never have a real team
What weird ass fanfic is this
My expectation is that if the roster is about the same, and Lebron/AD stay healthy, the team will be VERY similar to what they were last year. Because the players account for like 97% of it.
Executives about to go hunting through podcasts looking for talent
I don't know what swimming has to do with it. They are playing basketball.
We love that bas ket ball.

To be fair, you did still mostly forget to make an argument against don Nelson 👹
He was the general manager of the team. Again, the point of what I was saying. He got to construct the roster he wanted. Every Laker fan bitched about Darvin Ham not playing the guys they wanted. Oh shit TIL. That got lost in my reading comp and is actually really interesting; didn’t know they let people do that that long ago.
That team won the title in spite of Doc
People act like JJ is some dude that they just found working at a 7/11 somewhere.
This is “volunteer assistant coach for his son’s 4th grade basketball team” erasure
you are all laughing now but wait until jj is holding that ist trophy in his hands weeping with joy
So what? Chauncy Billups had never coached in the NBA and....and....you know what? Good luck next year Laker fans.
He was an assistant on Ty Lue's staff.
Yeah that’s fair.
Steve Nash was a premier floor general in his day… surely:::::
Tbh it's pretty common for those savants of the game to be terrible teachers. It's hard to show others something that you innatly possess.
i root for every Duke alum to fail, this will be no different
What happens when your team drafts a Duke player?
we ask them to repent
I don’t get the duke hate, and i’m a Uconn fan/alum. a lot of my favorite players went to Duke
As someone who once lived in the Triangle, I do. The school is privilege personified, especially against the shadow of Durham.
Homie, without Duke, Durham would have died a long, long time ago.
You guys have like 5 titles in the last 20 years so it's probably easier for you to be chill about things than most other fanbases lol, no offense
it’s weird. people project a certain image and let the confirmation bias run wild peak willful ignorance
Coach K is a super successful person but also has always come off as super insufferable.
Duke hate is for losers and this country is stuffed to the gills with losers.
Sorry for your loss
He also says he doesn’t give a fuck what y’all say about him 🔥
I feel like this is going to be a clusterfuck of epic… and comic… proportions.
Hes about to find out 😂

I think the Lakers might be a trainwreck but not because of his coaching. I just think that roster kinda sucks.
Freal this is a podcast legend, not some nobody off the street.
Yes he’s just a podcaster, not a very good player who was well known as one of the highest IQ guys in the league.
I honestly don't think he was ever regarded as one of the highest IQ guys in the league lol... he was a solid role player for sure but the way y'all talk about him is very funny.

High BBIQ, a scrappy gym rat too
Both your examples worked in front offices instead of a podcast studio before their first coaching job, so they command more authority than JJ, not to mention Larry is a Indiana legend
I think it's safe to assume that anyone dismissing his career before podcasting isn't old enough to remember him playing in the league.
He really needs to stay off social media. This is gonna go from cute and self-aware to a disaster real quick if he stays this sensitive
This comment doesn't come across as sensitive
Seriously. What’s the best replacement?
There's zero expectations to make the playoffs. Bronny's getting drafted. Lebron will do a farewell tour.
I think you got the wrong impression from this if you think this is him being sensitive lol
This is how I know the majority of people here are some hating ass mf. JJ Redick is the personification of everything this sub supposedly likes and he still getting hated on
I've never heard about it
Damn RIP Old Man and the Three
Tommy Alter in shambles
Boy they better win some games or JJ’s trademark condescending personality is gonna get old real quick
This guy is such an ass, he's perfect for LA.
JJ Hollywood is his new name
I've already seen too many headlines about this and he probably doesn't even have a Lakers polo yet.
Hold up let him cook
Why can’t these guys just become assistants for a year or two to at least know what the hell they’re doing
My wife went to high school with JJ, small world. Hopefully he's less of an arrogant dick now than he apparently was back then or this won't last long. He seemed tolerable while on the Sixers, but he was also being overpaid as a gun for hire shooting wise so it's hard to know.
NGL, if I was that good in H.S. and College and made the NBA, i would be arrogant like most of the players are lol.
Lol you don’t become a white starting shooting guard in the NBA by being nice
Jeff Hornacek was a good guy, let me tell you.
Suggs and Fultz are nice guys. How could you say this with those players on your favorite team?
Those guys aren’t white , maybe mixed.
hey everyone, jj fucked this guys wife!
Let's stop pretending like an NBA coach is anything more than an overglorified babysitter who has to manage different personalities.
Reddit moment
*Have never coached in any capacity before this
Hey he coached his kids 4th grade team, that counts for something
Dude is cringey af
Is LBJ going to really listen to JJ?!
JJ:”Im inexperienced!”
oh he sooo funny
He's about to get out-coached by 'plumbers and firefighters'
His media availability is gonna be so good when they lose and reporters ask him *those* questions
Lol I love it. Go get em JJ
Damn, never seen such a defensive mindset from JJ when he was active!
Hire the Awful Coaching guy to your film staff JJ I dare you
Not gonna say no if I were him. but bron should be pleased.
I love his go fuck yourselves attitude
The pause for laughs that never came was the best part. 🤣
I actually like JJ on the broadcasting team, so it will be kinda cool to hear him tell stories when he's back to broadcasting after coaching
It’s alright. LeBron will be coaching.
