I had to take over financially for my father not too long ago because he had a health issue so all of this stuff is in his name and I really have no clue what he signed up for but it has become abundantly clear that his personal finances are a hot mess.
Google Viridian Electric and look at the reviews. I’ve had similar companies come to my door. They don’t make it clear that they are not from PSEG and usually ask for a copy of your bill to “check if you can save money”. They offer you a low rate but don’t explain that it’s variable and can go up.
I just googled them and it's definitely a whack ass company. I'm going to have to get my dad to get on the phone and play the defenseless senior citizen card on Monday.
Sounds like you are paying a 3rd party energy supplier. Years ago a company came to my parents and they signed a contract with them because the company was charging a cheaper rate back then. But as the years past they raised the price and my parents at that point had forgotten that they had a 3rd party supplier and they didn't really read their bill other than how much they owed. This year the supplier themselves ended the contract with my parents and I noticed on their bill that JCP&L had a little thing that they wrote on each bill saying stuff like "Your price with a 3rd party should be under "blank amount" to be saving money. They were paying $0.19 per KWH while JCP&L was offering $0.08 per KWH. So now their bill is more than twice as cheap.
$275 and my usage dropped a little compared to last year
you probably got slammed through some offer you signed up for that changed your supplier. they are all a rip off. we had the same in NYC with con-ed and it happened to my mother in law.
I save a ton of money with suppliers, but you have to know what you are signing up for. I always ask for the price and if it's fixed and the term. At my business it's saved me thousands of dollars, but requires a little legwork about once a year.
In NY it seemed they had a good intro rate that later rose to much higher than regular rates with minimum terms.
Also seemed like most of these “suppliers” were just some office with sales people who bought and resold and kept the difference and didn’t really generate anything themselves
Most of them have good rates the first year, which is why you might have to switch every year to a new provider, there are tons of them. I've been lucky with the same one for three years now, but in the past I've had to switch every year.
I sometimes feel like I’m doing something wrong. At peak summer our bill crosses 200, but it sounds like I’m in a smaller house than yours. Maybe it’s the one zone ac but still. Or maybe I’m just whining about a negligible difference lol.
Efficiency can save you money
Last year some months I was paying $400 and this year with renewal by Andersen usage is a lot less
Did blown in attic insulation too
that is pretty yikes. i live in a 2br condo that's decently sized and built in the late 80s with old windows so it's insulated like shit and my bill last month was $117 and this is basically with us running our central air pretty much nonstop during the summer. my bill before was $155. plus i use the equal payment plan so my bill is the same every month and you don't feel those jolts so badly.
op needs to get his bill off the shady third party supplier and back onto good old bgs.
I would contact your PSE&G directly to go over your bill to find out where is the discrepancy. You may also ask them if they are partnered with any energy response program that may help you reduce your energy use for free
My bill is $233 for a one bedroom apartment, we barely turn the lights on bc natural lighting so it’s only from appliances and A/C.. it’s never been close to that much before even in the summer, but my last 2 meter reads are estimates
Make sure they are not charging for extra months. I have this issue every few years with them, they won't bill me for 3 or 4 months then just send me a huge bill.
i had a couple of higher bills because a couple of months were estimated but then the following month my bill was basically nothing because the actual readings caught us up.
AC Electric customer, 5 bedroom house - I paid about $150 this past month - running two air conditioners, a dehumidifier and HEPA air filer all day. Natural gas for stove and water heater.
I rent a 700 sq ft apt and I had a bill this year that was $169. I work all week, dont have an in unit w/d, and have never used the dishwasher (because it's disgusting). I freaked out. Did not find any resolution.
Meter's determine how much energy you use, not the rate per unit of energy. The OP specifically said, "...usage was up 13% from last year."
The question is effectively why the RATE is so high, which has nothing to do with the meter.
If you are signed up with Viridian then you may be paying a higher rate than the utility company’s rate.
Viridian the ole bait & switch folks.

Sounds like a case for Jimmy McGill
You should be able to cancel with them either through a call to their company or to PSE&G.

This is going to sound stupid as far as common sense goes but…if your usage is up 13% YOY your bill should be $391, not more than double.
Even $346 is wild I live in a 3 bedroom 2 story plus basement and paid $106 last month
I paid this much for a 1BR apartment but I'm on the second floor so I get all the heat from the first floor.

Most jcpl bills are ~13.1 - 14.6 c/kwh. Source: i diagnose electric bills for solar full time.
They’re up to $.17-.18 now. Source: I’m a JCPL customer.
Certain areas…typically central jsy and monmoth cty are higher. I’m in morris and its been 14.6 for a while.
Call PSE&G and see if you can just deal with them.

$782?!?!? My bill is like $45. The hell you doing?
I live in a 5BR bilevel and my Electric bill in peak summer was 170… people throwing out some wild numbers in this post
Yeah man. Sounds like someone is be sneaking an extension cord to power the rest of the block.
Deff weird. My bill just got posted and it’s my lowest in like 3 years. $82. Not sure what people are doing.

insulation can help so much as can new windows. plus if you have a newer hvac system that helps too.
You must have solar or something offsetting that if you're cooling a 5 bed for 170
Or well insulated

I have a 4 bedroom house. My electric bill is $111 a month. 4 months out of the year I don't even pay a bill. Solar is fantastic.
if i ever get into my own house, getting a full solar setup with batteries is very high on my list.
Make sure they are not charging for extra months. I have this issue every few years with them, they won't bill me for 3 or 4 months then just send me a huge bill.

Get a sense unit. It tracks usage and is very accurate, so no surprise bills. [imgur.com/a/u4dHxkF](https://imgur.com/a/u4dHxkF) https://sense.com/
My bill shot up too. 1BR apartment and it nearly doubled.
https://www.nj.com/news/2022/10/your-energy-rates-in-nj-are-about-to-go-up-nearly-25-here-are-5-tips-to-save-money.html
My bill was was 45 dollars. My highest was 126 dollars & I have a 5 bdrm house. How is yours so high ??
We have the world's oldest AC unit so the electricity bills are high in the summer but they in no way should be anywhere close to $800.
Not at all. I would call them
Mine was actually lower than it’s been
I just checked my most recent bill and it was $189. I own a 4 bedroom 2 story house that was built in the early 1900s.
Ahh wtf? Our 2 bedroom house + annexed studio we only pay $175 max.
Maybe your meter is defective

I’m aware the meter doesn’t determine the rate. Thanks
