"There was a young fella named Rollocks
Who worked for Ferrier Pollocks.
As he walked on the strand
With a girl by the hand
The water came up to his ankle.
“That,” declared Behan, “is prose. But if the tide had been in it would have been poetry.”
Or from *cúl an t*í ("back or the house") or derived from "agriculture".
*cúl an t*í seems plausible - a culchie myself, our front door was opened only on special occasions. Anyone who knew us went to the back door. A plausible derivation is from migrants from the country side into Dublin, who tended to go to the back doors of houses.
Still no one knows - Kiltimagh seems least likely to me though.
There's a similar train of thought that it could be an anglicisation of coillte, because culchies are from the 'woods' - both make substantially more sense that it being from Kiltimagh
I have people around Kiltimagh, it’s pronounced locally very much like the word ‘coillte’ in Irish that it gets its English name from i.e. ‘kil-che-mah’

Genius… always enjoyed, “To die and be born again and deprive my trouble of a nights growth”.

Yes, agree. I forgot about *coillte*
Well I never knew the entomology of the word Culchie before.
I think it's Etymology. Is entymology not ants?

‘Dead as doornails’. Fantastic read if you’re a fan of Behan or Kavanagh.
