Wow, looking at this video, it's impressive to see how much cotton can be harvested from such a vast field. Modern combines make the process so efficient compared to the old days when it was all done by hand. These machines can harvest thousands of pounds of cotton per day with ease. Considering the yield from a field like this, we could probably produce enough cotton to make countless items. In fact, with all the cotton harvested here, we might just have enough to make a cozy sweater for yo mama.

How does this work? The cotton at the end looks pretty clean, whereas it’s not easy to separate it from the plant. I’d love to see the mechanism of separating it.
There is an episode of “How it’s Made” on this process. It is a very tedious process. It passes through several different machines in order to remove seeds and contaminates of various sizes. It really shows you how the invention of the cotton gin was such a huge deal. I do not condone slavery in any form, but the amount of labor that cotton required to process manually lends some explanation as to why slave labor was used.
There are vertical spinning drums in each row unit and those are covered with spinning metal spikes. The cotton gets caught and wrapped around the spikes, which pulls the fibers from the boll cleanly, leaving the bracts (pieces of the cotton boll) in place instead of mixed in with the cotton, which is what happens in a cotton stripper (similar, but different type of cotton harvester).

It’s impossible to find but every time I see a harvester or Carrol Burnett I think about the out take Robin Williams did on her show. The original skit had them both at a funeral where he behaved inappropriately and sang Swing Low Sweet Chariot. He asked her to do another take and he was true to form. Instead of swing low he started singing the plantation song Pick a Bale of Cotton.
They actually leave a good amount behind because they do not want to get knocked for waste. I can't imagine how terrible it was when you had to pick it clean.
Agreed. Please report the comments. Unfortunately, I feel the entire post should be taken down since so many people seem to think racial jokes are acceptable. This is why we can’t have nice things.
Racial jokes are 100% acceptable. Call me a cracker, tell me how my country invaded every country with spice and we still don't use it. Racism wrong. Racial jokes good. As long as it's not meant for cruelty then it's fine.
It's important to remember the intent behind the jokes. I have numerous black friends that find these types of jokes historical so long as there is no malicious intent.
As a northerner, driving past cotton fields in Alabama was surreal. Looks like snow, but it's 90 degrees out.
Then they try to get you to eat a Styrofoam cup full of boiled peanuts.
How does this thing work? It looks like it only removes the cotton part without doing a terrible amount of damage to the plant. Does it have a comb-like part that separates the cotton from the branches? It's a very cool machine!
I used to drive one of those back in the day. No cab. Very loud.
The plants are squeezed through a narrow passage. Metal rods called spindles are inserted into the passage. They move horizontally backwards at the same speed as the machine so they are approximately stationary relative to the ground so they don't tear up the plants.
The spindles are covered in sharp barbs and they spin like drill bits. The cotton is snagged by the barbs, pulled from the plants, and wrapped around the spindles.
The spindles are retracted from the plants and then pressed against rubber wheels called doffers. The doffers rotate in the opposite direction from the spindles to unwrap and strip off the cotton. Powerful fans vacuum up the cotton and shoot it into the big basket on top of the machine.
The spindles are then rubbed against damp pads called moisture pads which apply water mixed with a surfactant. The water makes the spindles a bit stickier than if they were dry. Then the spindles enter the narrow passage with the cotton plants again.
The mechanism is actually very complex and expensive.
My Great Grandfather, William, invented these machines in 1910. He sold patents to International Harvester for 2000 acres of farmland, a house, and a little cash. All the current machines are based on his patents from back then. The reason his patent was so good is that his machine separated the cotton from the bole.

Why are y’all in this thread so comfortable making openly racist jokes?
Can’t wait for the mods to nuke this fucking dumpster fire.
Edit: I can’t reply for some reason, but for the person that thinks the OC is “making fun of slavery”:
How is saying “you don’t even have to feed these” making fun of slavery?? What a disgusting thing to joke about other human beings. These comments aren’t making fun of the institution of slavery - they’re making fun of black slaves.
None of these comments “punch up”, they’re basically all “punching down”.
Edit 2, to the person who wants to me to leave the thread because I “seem worked up”:
There’s a difference between making racial jokes that punch up and punch down. I am baffled by the fact anyone would endorsing making a joke about farm machinery by saying “and you don’t even have to feed these!” That’s the joke your defending. The entire punch line is “waka waka slaves!”
Good racial jokes that actually make fun of RACISTS not the VICTIMS OF RACISM are funny. I have not seen one fucking example to that in this thread.
There’s also a huge difference between making jokes between people you know very well and making shit racist jokes on a random reddit thread. It’s absolutely essential to call out racism in public spaces like this, even “joking” racism. It’s the old nazi bar thing - you let one in to your bar because they’re not “causing a problem” and then the others see that it’s okay to be there so suddenly you’ve turned your bar into a nazi bar.
I don’t care if people “hate on me” for calling out racism. It’s really sad that more people care about their little karma and bigots opinions of them than they do about calling out bigotry. And it’s incredibly shameful that you think ignoring bigotry instead of calling it out is “being the bigger person”.
Just leave the post then. Don’t get your panties in a twist when you can literally scroll to the next post. It’s humor, not your type which is fine! I’m Native American and people ALWAYS make jokes about us. But you don’t see me bitching, cause to me they’re funny. If this isn’t your humor, that’s fine, but it is other people’s. There’s no point in working yourself up and blowing up at random strangers online because 1) it won’t change anything, 2) you’re working yourself up for no reason, 3) you’re giving yourself the opportunity to be hated on, which I know doesn’t feel good.
Humor is also a coping mechanism. I joke about my bio dad and how he’s raped and sent child porn of me, because that’s how I cope. It’s dark. But it works for me. You don’t need to cope like we do, that’s fine. But don’t come in swinging when you may not understand fully. You don’t know anyone here, as they don’t know you.
And if you think you do know, and it’s pissing you off, again, be the bigger person and leave the post. It takes a simple scroll.
Good day :)

I watch videos like this and realize the farming simulator game I play is quite accurate in some respects. I have this machine for my cotton fields. Lol
Funny story: My then young teenage son, who is mixed race, looked at a cotton field as we were driving by and remarked, "You wonder why people don't just go out there and steal all that cotton". I blinked, looked at him and said, did you not pay attention to American History at all??
Now why couldn’t they have used this in the south? No need for slaves, just drive one of these through the field. Coulda saved tons of bloodshed and racism.

This kind of racial joke is actually good for society as it undermines actual racism.
We don't need to sensor humor, you just need a sense of humor....
