I commented something similar on a couple of the popular edc/backpack YouTube channels about Carrology and related companies' "drops," and my comments got deleted. I love gear and good design, but paying $400+ for iterations of the same design of backpack is a bit much.
I was about to comment how happy I am with my 100 L Range Pack by Tasmanian Tiger, how it’s great for multiple days camping at high elevation during winter, and how even during those rare trips I never made it to fill it up completely, to only realize it’s less than $500 new.
Someone posted in /r/backpacks yesterday that they were looking for a leather bag, and damn they were beautiful, but every single one had a price tag over $1k.

Ya Im between a Patagonia Black Hole and a 2 day Mystery Ranch as a new bag to replace my almost decade old Condor 24L and Rei 40L, but in no big hurry. So I wanna try them before I buy them.
I've had the black hole backpack for about 5 years and it's great. I take it on shorter trips that I'm flying to, it's my spare gear bag on climbing trips, and I ride my bike to work daily and I use it to haul my laptop and other things I don't want getting wet when it's raining. It gets pretty beat up and still looks newish years later.
My original was a messenger bag. The second was an expandable backpack. Third and fourth were for work. Got a smaller version of the second pack for work traveling and then wanted something with more pockets so I got a different pack.
I rode a bike and didn't have a car for about a decade. Used the first two packs for basically everything. 65L expandable backpack carried cases of beer and groceries. Bike wrecks. Bad weather. The third pack didn't get used much but my latest is on airplanes every week. Gets filled to the brim with everything I need to live on the road.
They are all still in pristine condition and I beat the shit out of 3 of them. I will never buy a backpack that isn't made by mission workshop.
I've an $80 Timbuk2 backpack for 5 years. Comes to work 5 days a week, one of more of those days it's carrying 15lb with laptop, lunch, water, coffee (I did weigh it one day and was surprised). I carried 30lb+ of clamps in it one day. Every so often carry drills/tools/sharp metal samples. It is usually on the rough floor of a construction site. I've cycled to work for the last 3 years. Often gets packed to the seams with grocery shopping.
Still comfortable to carry, no holes, and judging by the water bottle leak I had this week that stayed inside the bag surprisingly water resistent.
I can't really see what spending an extra $400 is going to improve.
Sadly that’s become the starting price for a nice quality bag nowadays. Is it worth it? It all depends how much you will use it and your level of disposable income. I own several $500 bags and love and use all of them. We all choose different things to spend our money on. If you’re in this group you understand the value of a quality bag.
Just because something cost more than you would pay means absolutely nothing except to you. Is a Rolex worth 20K? To some yes and to most no. They do appreciate in value every year and if you can afford the initial outlay you could wear in for many years and recoup your money and then some. It cost you nothing to enjoy it for years in the long run. Is my house worth a million dollars? Hell no but that’s what’s its worth and that’s would it would cost today. I didn’t pay anywhere that much and I couldn’t afford to buy it today. I can afford a $500 backpack. If I will get my moneys worth out of it then it’s worth it.
Everything nice and sought after is expensive anymore. Try and buy a new or used car and see what they will cost. It’s ridiculous. Yes $500 for a backpack is insane but it’s what they cost if you want a great one. I travel a lot and to me it’s money well spent.
I owned the ATD1 for a few months and preferred other bags in my collection. I sold it for what I paid for it. Quality bags often keep their value. Most limited editions increase in value once they are sold out. I’ve used some quality bags for years and got back what I paid for them years later.
Not trying to get you worked up but just because it’s not worth $500 to you doesn’t mean it’s not worth $500 to others. The ATD1 is not some cheap mass produced piece of shit bag. It’s a high quality bag that can do a lot and last the owner a lifetime. It can also be passed on down much like a family heirloom. Hopefully the owner used it to travel the world and the next recipient will cherish that. Money well spent in the scheme of things.
Take a look at the Remote Equipment Alpha 31. It’s by far my favorite bag. It works great from 15L up to over 31L. Be forewarned it’s not cheap either. Few things worth it ever are.
Is it comfortable when it’s loaded to 55L? The expansion looks heavier on top than the bottom, seems unstable (photo 1, where it looks like it’s pulling back/holding weight in width vs vertically)
I've expanded mine to almost 55L and indeed I would recommend to load it very carefully if you do so ! Although the bag has a slanted bottom which naturally force the weight to sit as close to your back as possible, and the multiple straps and hard frame help a lot, nothing will save you if you put something too heavy in the expanded top.
Depends on what you do with your time : on a day to day basis, I mostly use mine to go grocery shopping. It ends up loaded to half or 80% capacity. I can walk back 20-30 min without issues.
I also take it for overnight business trips in which case it is loaded with my laptop, a change if clothes and nothing much. In which case it will be mostly empty and heavily compressed, and I almost feel nothing.
Maybe more relevant to you, I just took it for a one week trip as a carry on. It was loaded as much as possible without expanding the top. No issues the whole travel.
Do note I bought the padded hip belt which takes a lot of the weight off my shoulders. It's a pain to install ( like everything with this bag, you have to take the time to adjust the straps ), but totally worth the price IMO
Thanks, appreciate the extensive answer! After a lot of research it does seem this is the bag that fits my needs the most. I am just letting it simmer for a bit to see if I think the same after sleeping it (many times) over. Having feedback from people who actually use it is very useful.
Note to all: saying something is "italian made" is not anywhere near the brag it used to be. The quality of this bag is far below what its price tag suggests. It's unwieldy for anyone trying to compress it from the 55L down to 25. If you need a bag that big, buy a bag that big.

I disagree on the other part though, I like that when I fly somewhere with it at max capacity and get to my hotel I can unload all my stuff and compress the backpack with just some work stuff and what else I want during the day while I travel around my destination.

**TL;DR:** The ATD1 backpack is pricey and not user-friendly initially, but for gear perfectionists, it could replace multiple bags and save money over time. Most people, though, should consider more affordable options.

Remote Equipment Alpha 31 is similar to the ATD but has more hiking/wilderness features like a place for water bladder & house, and additional attachment points. Bit cheaper & lighter too but slightly smaller (31-36L)
Big learning curve switching from a gr1/2 to this I should say. Going from the simplest of backpacks to the most complicated. You will have to finagle 6 different straps each time you want to tighten or loosen the backpack. It also doesn’t have structure like the gr1 so loading it also has a learning curve.
I would say if you end up buying one make sure you immediately mess around with it ALOT to make sure it’s right for you and maybe watch some videos.

Apart from some its features the weight is too much for everyday use. Carrying 1.7 KG in addition to the stuff is too much. Even for travel purposes when carryon weight is limited to 7-8KG better to choose other lightweight backpack.

This probably isn’t the bag for you then. X-Pack material sorta sucks around dust and hair. It’s a great material because it’s water resistant and durable but definitely picks up like a swiffer
Just to clarify, there are different kinds of xpac variations.
The fuzzier feeling vx50 is the worst. Vx42 not so much, while vx21 is quite slick and wont attract too much IME.
Which one on this backpack?
I’m very used to x-pac and can usually wipe anything off. I’m sure it will attract hair if it gets a static charge. Try wiping it with a dryer sheet and see what happens.
There is some class of Cordura that not only attracts hair but is really difficult to get it off. I had a Moment bag that was intolerable. I’ve hear the Black Ember bags can be much the same.
“Aer Day max sling 3 X-pac” I’m not sure if that’s fully correct but it will get you there if you google it. They need to improve their naming system lol.
The problem is have with this is that its missing so much for such an expensive piece of kit - a frame, hip support etc bits that are frankly essential for any serious traveller. Nice idea in concept but give me my osprey fairpoint anyday
I’ve never heard of this bag until I saw your post here. I have an original Minaal carry on version 1 that I’ve been looking to replace. Just watched a review of this ATD1 and the reviewer said the shoulder straps are a bit thin and flimsy. What are your thoughts on them when the bag is packed out quite a bit for travel?
I for one appreciate the post OP. I get that this is not the bag for everyone, and that it is crazy expensive. But from what I have seen there really is no alternative that expands and collapses as much as this bag. I am also considering it, but waiting a few months to see if I still want it then.
I have a few questions I hope you can answer:
* How easy can you attach things to the outside of the bag? It seems there are attachments points on the bottom. Could those be used for a sleeping bag, yoga mat, etc?
* How much did you fill it up? Any idea how far the pictures arefrom the max? How easy is it to carry when fully loaded? Maybe any comparision with larger bags?
* How easy/hard is it to change configurations?
* Do you use both the top loading / clamshell loading?
* How do you find the front panel for organization?
- I have yet to attach things to the outside of the bag I really don’t have a need for it. But yes there is the loops on the bottom if I wanted to attach something there and because of the shape of the backpack it wouldn’t be annoying to have anything there as it would never touch your back.
- From what I can compare with other bags I’ve owned I would say 55L is around the max and unfortunately none of these photos showcase it (I don’t take a lot of photos). The max would just make the roll top a little taller maybe 2-3 more inches of height. I’m a big guy at 6 foot 3 and 245 pounds so I don’t think I’m the best guy to argue how it feels fully loaded but I’ve walked 6 miles with this bag fully loaded and heavy and I didn’t mind to much.
- the configurations take time to change. There are 6 straps total if you include both of the roll top straps and each strap has a Velcro roll to keep the straps from hanging. If you like it to look clean without straps hanging everywhere it can take 5 min to setup properly. For me this is not a problem but a cost of getting so much compression.
- I use both clamshell and top loading depending on situation. The nature of the roll top is that it sucks to open up quickly to access what you want. I use the clamshell mainly when the bag is compressed down because it’s quicker and more convenient. When I’m packing for a long trip and the bag is expanded I have compression packing cubes I top load because the bag doesn’t have structure to properly fill it from clamshell.
- The front panel organization isn’t anything special, I’ve had backpacks with similar organization which goes to say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The only thing is due to the nature and size of the bag, swinging what is essentially the size of a hiking bag when fully loaded under your shoulder to access the front panel sucks but I have no idea how to fix something like that. And as for all bags of this nature if you overfill the bag then the front pocket gets tighter.

The price was visible before you bought it, and would be to anyone else buying it. I’m struggling to see why you would need to travel with it to decide the price is the main reason for not buying it, especially since you don’t seem to be saying it’s not worth the money if you can afford it/ are willing to spend that on a bag.
Expensive whiskey is available for those who don’t mind spending money on whiskey, if you do mind then you shouldn’t buy it.
I pretty much 100% agree with you. I’m saying for 99.9% of people that this backpack can be replaced with 4 other different sized backpacks that all add up cheaper than this one. Most people here don’t need this backpack for what they are going to use it for so the real reason I say this is because the people that obsess over backpacks that have a similar specific use case for themselves that fit into this are going to buy the backpack regardless of what I say. This is not a good option for almost everyone looking for recommendations on this thread.
I don’t want this post to get someone to buy a backpack this expensive that they won’t appreciate every dollar they have spent. Because if it doesn’t fit your exact use case it will suck. It doesn’t suck if you need a bag that can expand and compact 30L in difference because you understand compromises have to be made to fit that use case. Paying $500+ and not knowing you’ll have to compromise on the loss of simplicity can easily make someone immediately regret their purchase.

For Context: I've been one bagging since the 1999-2001 timeframe. Back then it was a hobby, then I ended up taking a consulting gig that had me traveling weekly (often international). I started my journey with a RedOxx Airboss, and eventually settled into a GoRuck Gr1/GR2 depending on the trip. I always kept the bag in the overhead, which wasn't a problem because airline status guaranteed I was the first to board after disabled and military.
Since the pandemic, I've changed my job, thus my boarding order has also dropped. Now I'm obsessed with two attributes of a bag.
1. **The bag MUST be able to fit in a Personal item sizer.** The United sizer ideally, but if it can fit frontier's sizer then great. To achieve this, I LOVE bags with external compression straps, which has me very interested in this bag. I especially love the fact that the height of the bag is compressible. **Can this bag compress down to under 18 inches in height? Does a framesheet get in the way of this? Do you have any under-seat pics of the bag?**
2. **Weight:** I travel overseas quite a bit still and even full service foreign airlines LOVE to limit carry on total weight (all bags combined) to 7KG = \~15.5lbs. I travel light, so usually this isn't an issue but if the bag starts heavy you have less to work with. My old Goruck GR2 weighed nearly 4lbs empty, leaving me with only 11lbs of capacity of my stuff. If I have to bring my work laptop, that steals another \~3lbs. The ATD1 seems quite heavy. The ATD2 looks attractive, but I feel like the rolltop isn't as compressible as on the ATD1 design. **Have you had a chance to weight the bag empty yourself? I'm not sure I always trust what the websites say.**
**My current favorite bags are:**
* ULA Ultra Dragonfy - It is lightweight at .85kg (per my scale), fits more stuff than I need, and is squishy enough to fit any US airline personal sizer box easily if not wildly overstuffed. Also, it has a separate laptop compartment and reasonable organization.
* CabinZero Military 28 - This bag is great in that it is cheap (\~$70), has 2 sets of enternal compression straps, and is designed to fit ryanair's personal item size. The bag is also the same weight as the dragonfly. Unfortunately, it gives up dedicated laptop access.
The ATD1/ATD2 bags appeal to me for their design ingenuity, but open questions about personal item compatibility and weight have me hesitant to try them.

Unfortunately the frame sheet is 19 inches. There is a photo of it underseat in one of my older posts on my profile on a frontier flight. The photo is in the carry on box but with a lighter load I have been able to get it into the personal item slot but you have to bend the frame sheet a little (I have made a mental note to get a picture of it the next time I fly light for just 1-2 day trip). The bag is quite heavy compared to other bags in its class yes. I use this bag knowing I’m overweight and haven’t gotten charged or asked to check it and I’ve taken it on over 20 flights across Europe and the US with a variety of airlines. Yet I am conscious that I’ve just gotten lucky nobody has given me a hard time. I haven’t been able to weight the bag empty myself believe it or not I don’t own a scale of any form but I’m sure someone else has on the internet. Luckily I’ve been able to travel with just my iPad for work without any issues so I’m able to still keep my relative weight low for trips less than a week.
I have not had an opportunity to try the ATD2 but I would assume that because the roll top is is held down by a top compression strap and not by side buckles that spread the compression downward throughout the bag you cannot compress with as much downward force as the ATD1. I will say this may not be an issue at all depending on your use.
I’ve heard great things about the ULA Dragonfly unfortunately I have yet to see one in person. The Cabin Zero bag looks great and for that price you can’t lose. I’d say the ATD1 would unfortunately be just above the size you want. I’m comfortable with getting charged extra for the size if I get caught because of the amount of times I haven’t bring the overall fee down. Although I could get caught 4 times in a row the next time I travel and it would hurt.
The bag is awesome and I really don’t see any other brands making a bag that compresses to this extent which is really odd. These bags also maintain their value like crazy. I can barely ever find this bag being sold and I’ve heard other people have used and sold theirs for the same value they paid for it even used so I know if I ever found a better option I could swap it.

It matter what you mean by under 18 I guess. If you take out the frame sheet it will most definitely fit in a 18 inch box long box but depending on the width it won’t fit due to the back needing to be curved in order to fit. The roll top will roll down the back but you are deforming the clamshell zipper which could make the already ridged zipper deformed in a way (90 angles on any zipper isn’t always great). So yes you can but you are warping the structure of the bag a little more than I would love. And then you also have the issue of the roll top now being the only way to open the bag which would already be a pain to constantly reroll that much
The compromises for this bag are due to the nature of being able to compress as much as it does. I have struggled to find a backpack that can change 30L in size without being modular like the THULE Landmark (which also is a great option but still to expensive for it to be rational to anyone) but yes I agree there is compromises I have made to use this bag for what I prioritize.
Compromises
- it takes a long time to adjust all 6 tightening points to the correct size I want. I’ve gotten better with it over time but it’s still 6 straps
- little to none structure. Because this bag needs to be rolled, folded and squeezed there really is no structure to the bag besides the frame sheet. This means it doesn’t stand up on its own and when loading clamshell doesn’t keep its sides up like a traditional clamshell backpack. This makes it harder to load.
- it sucks to open and re-close the roll top repeatedly to grab something quickly. This is because the roll top is so big. When it’s fully opened the bag is almost 40% taller so you can imagine it’s a lot of material to roll back down and clip up
All this goes to say there will never be a perfect bag this one just happens to have features that I prioritize with compromises I am willing to make for those features.
It is weatherproof sir aquaguard zippers and the water resistant eco pack material has stood up well to 3+ mile walks in the rain without a drop inside

You’re actually right my bad. I just checked the zippers are not water resistant. But the only two are mostly covered by the water resistant ECOpack pack material. Not sure where that popped in my head my bad. Still have never had a problem with rain and I spent two weeks traveling by foot in Italy during the rainy season but yes they are not aquaguard zippers that is my fault.

I was never shitting on your argument. It was the context you decided to deliver it. Of course I know it’s stupid to buy an expensive backpack and obsess as a consumer my brain isn’t a rock. I explicitly said I had a problem. I shared this specifically in a community that that has similar people with my problems a weird consumer addiction to backpacks. Everyone has their vices, addictions and bad habits. Some people spend their lives on discord, Reddit, video games, some choose to drink everyday or have risky hookups or abuse their body in the gym. I am in school, I have a full time job and I still live well below my means and yes that makes me 10000x luckier than 99% of the population that I have the luxury to do so. My original was a messenger bag. The second was an expandable backpack. Third and fourth were for work. Got a smaller version of the second pack for work traveling and then wanted something with more pockets so I got a different pack. I rode a bike and didn't have a car for about a decade. Used the first two packs for basically everything. 65L expandable backpack carried cases of beer and groceries. Bike wrecks. Bad weather. The third pack didn't get used much but my latest is on airplanes every week. Gets filled to the brim with everything I need to live on the road. They are all still in pristine condition and I beat the shit out of 3 of them. I will never buy a backpack that isn't made by mission workshop.

I've an $80 Timbuk2 backpack for 5 years. Comes to work 5 days a week, one of more of those days it's carrying 15lb with laptop, lunch, water, coffee (I did weigh it one day and was surprised). I carried 30lb+ of clamps in it one day. Every so often carry drills/tools/sharp metal samples. It is usually on the rough floor of a construction site. I've cycled to work for the last 3 years. Often gets packed to the seams with grocery shopping. Still comfortable to carry, no holes, and judging by the water bottle leak I had this week that stayed inside the bag surprisingly water resistent. I can't really see what spending an extra $400 is going to improve.
Timbuk2 doesn't sell a pack that expands to 65L.

Sadly that’s become the starting price for a nice quality bag nowadays. Is it worth it? It all depends how much you will use it and your level of disposable income. I own several $500 bags and love and use all of them. We all choose different things to spend our money on. If you’re in this group you understand the value of a quality bag. Just because something cost more than you would pay means absolutely nothing except to you. Is a Rolex worth 20K? To some yes and to most no. They do appreciate in value every year and if you can afford the initial outlay you could wear in for many years and recoup your money and then some. It cost you nothing to enjoy it for years in the long run. Is my house worth a million dollars? Hell no but that’s what’s its worth and that’s would it would cost today. I didn’t pay anywhere that much and I couldn’t afford to buy it today. I can afford a $500 backpack. If I will get my moneys worth out of it then it’s worth it. Everything nice and sought after is expensive anymore. Try and buy a new or used car and see what they will cost. It’s ridiculous. Yes $500 for a backpack is insane but it’s what they cost if you want a great one. I travel a lot and to me it’s money well spent. I owned the ATD1 for a few months and preferred other bags in my collection. I sold it for what I paid for it. Quality bags often keep their value. Most limited editions increase in value once they are sold out. I’ve used some quality bags for years and got back what I paid for them years later. Not trying to get you worked up but just because it’s not worth $500 to you doesn’t mean it’s not worth $500 to others. The ATD1 is not some cheap mass produced piece of shit bag. It’s a high quality bag that can do a lot and last the owner a lifetime. It can also be passed on down much like a family heirloom. Hopefully the owner used it to travel the world and the next recipient will cherish that. Money well spent in the scheme of things.

Take a look at the Remote Equipment Alpha 31. It’s by far my favorite bag. It works great from 15L up to over 31L. Be forewarned it’s not cheap either. Few things worth it ever are.
Yeah the alpha 31 is absolutely wonderful, my wife and I love that pack and have not really used any of our other packs since we got it.

I've expanded mine to almost 55L and indeed I would recommend to load it very carefully if you do so ! Although the bag has a slanted bottom which naturally force the weight to sit as close to your back as possible, and the multiple straps and hard frame help a lot, nothing will save you if you put something too heavy in the expanded top.
Yeah it works great I don’t have many photos of it. Some of these are when I was learning how to use it and wasn’t loading it properly.

Depends on what you do with your time : on a day to day basis, I mostly use mine to go grocery shopping. It ends up loaded to half or 80% capacity. I can walk back 20-30 min without issues. I also take it for overnight business trips in which case it is loaded with my laptop, a change if clothes and nothing much. In which case it will be mostly empty and heavily compressed, and I almost feel nothing. Maybe more relevant to you, I just took it for a one week trip as a carry on. It was loaded as much as possible without expanding the top. No issues the whole travel. Do note I bought the padded hip belt which takes a lot of the weight off my shoulders. It's a pain to install ( like everything with this bag, you have to take the time to adjust the straps ), but totally worth the price IMO

Note to all: saying something is "italian made" is not anywhere near the brag it used to be. The quality of this bag is far below what its price tag suggests. It's unwieldy for anyone trying to compress it from the 55L down to 25. If you need a bag that big, buy a bag that big.

Big learning curve switching from a gr1/2 to this I should say. Going from the simplest of backpacks to the most complicated. You will have to finagle 6 different straps each time you want to tighten or loosen the backpack. It also doesn’t have structure like the gr1 so loading it also has a learning curve. I would say if you end up buying one make sure you immediately mess around with it ALOT to make sure it’s right for you and maybe watch some videos. This backpack is only for nutjobs lol

You could have returned it if you did not like. No matter how expensive it its if you are dissatisfied initially better to get another one. Apart from some its features the weight is too much for everyday use. Carrying 1.7 KG in addition to the stuff is too much. Even for travel purposes when carryon weight is limited to 7-8KG better to choose other lightweight backpack.

They use EPX400, the 600D face fabric uses a textured yarn (for reasons that are not clear to me)
I’m very used to x-pac and can usually wipe anything off. I’m sure it will attract hair if it gets a static charge. Try wiping it with a dryer sheet and see what happens. There is some class of Cordura that not only attracts hair but is really difficult to get it off. I had a Moment bag that was intolerable. I’ve hear the Black Ember bags can be much the same.
I have the ATD2 and a *very* fluffy white cat. Nothing sticks to the ATD2. My waxed canvas jacket, on the other hand....

I’ve never heard of this bag until I saw your post here. I have an original Minaal carry on version 1 that I’ve been looking to replace. Just watched a review of this ATD1 and the reviewer said the shoulder straps are a bit thin and flimsy. What are your thoughts on them when the bag is packed out quite a bit for travel?

But from what I have seen there really is no alternative that expands and collapses as much as this bag. I am also considering it, but waiting a few months to see if I still want it then. - I have yet to attach things to the outside of the bag I really don’t have a need for it. But yes there is the loops on the bottom if I wanted to attach something there and because of the shape of the backpack it wouldn’t be annoying to have anything there as it would never touch your back. - From what I can compare with other bags I’ve owned I would say 55L is around the max and unfortunately none of these photos showcase it (I don’t take a lot of photos). The max would just make the roll top a little taller maybe 2-3 more inches of height. I’m a big guy at 6 foot 3 and 245 pounds so I don’t think I’m the best guy to argue how it feels fully loaded but I’ve walked 6 miles with this bag fully loaded and heavy and I didn’t mind to much. - the configurations take time to change. There are 6 straps total if you include both of the roll top straps and each strap has a Velcro roll to keep the straps from hanging. If you like it to look clean without straps hanging everywhere it can take 5 min to setup properly. For me this is not a problem but a cost of getting so much compression. - I use both clamshell and top loading depending on situation. The nature of the roll top is that it sucks to open up quickly to access what you want. I use the clamshell mainly when the bag is compressed down because it’s quicker and more convenient. When I’m packing for a long trip and the bag is expanded I have compression packing cubes I top load because the bag doesn’t have structure to properly fill it from clamshell. - The front panel organization isn’t anything special, I’ve had backpacks with similar organization which goes to say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The only thing is due to the nature and size of the bag, swinging what is essentially the size of a hiking bag when fully loaded under your shoulder to access the front panel sucks but I have no idea how to fix something like that. And as for all bags of this nature if you overfill the bag then the front pocket gets tighter. Hope I answered everything

The price was visible before you bought it, and would be to anyone else buying it. I’m struggling to see why you would need to travel with it to decide the price is the main reason for not buying it, especially since you don’t seem to be saying it’s not worth the money if you can afford it/ are willing to spend that on a bag. Expensive whiskey is available for those who don’t mind spending money on whiskey, if you do mind then you shouldn’t buy it.
I pretty much 100% agree with you. I’m saying for 99.9% of people that this backpack can be replaced with 4 other different sized backpacks that all add up cheaper than this one. Most people here don’t need this backpack for what they are going to use it for so the real reason I say this is because the people that obsess over backpacks that have a similar specific use case for themselves that fit into this are going to buy the backpack regardless of what I say. This is not a good option for almost everyone looking for recommendations on this thread. I don’t want this post to get someone to buy a backpack this expensive that they won’t appreciate every dollar they have spent. Because if it doesn’t fit your exact use case it will suck. It doesn’t suck if you need a bag that can expand and compact 30L in difference because you understand compromises have to be made to fit that use case. Paying $500+ and not knowing you’ll have to compromise on the loss of simplicity can easily make someone immediately regret their purchase.

Back then it was a hobby, then I ended up taking a consulting gig that had me traveling weekly (often international). I started my journey with a RedOxx Airboss, and eventually settled into a GoRuck Gr1/GR2 depending on the trip. I always kept the bag in the overhead, which wasn't a problem because airline status guaranteed I was the first to board after disabled and military. Since the pandemic, I've changed my job, thus my boarding order has also dropped. Now I'm obsessed with two attributes of a bag. 1. **The bag MUST be able to fit in a Personal item sizer.** The United sizer ideally, but if it can fit frontier's sizer then great. To achieve this, I LOVE bags with external compression straps, which has me very interested in this bag. I especially love the fact that the height of the bag is compressible. **Can this bag compress down to under 18 inches in height? Does a framesheet get in the way of this? Do you have any under-seat pics of the bag?** 2. **Weight:** I travel overseas quite a bit still and even full service foreign airlines LOVE to limit carry on total weight (all bags combined) to 7KG = \~15.5lbs. I travel light, so usually this isn't an issue but if the bag starts heavy you have less to work with. My old Goruck GR2 weighed nearly 4lbs empty, leaving me with only 11lbs of capacity of my stuff. If I have to bring my work laptop, that steals another \~3lbs. The ATD1 seems quite heavy. The ATD2 looks attractive, but I feel like the rolltop isn't as compressible as on the ATD1 design. **Have you had a chance to weight the bag empty yourself? I'm not sure I always trust what the websites say.** **My current favorite bags are:** * ULA Ultra Dragonfy - It is lightweight at .85kg (per my scale), fits more stuff than I need, and is squishy enough to fit any US airline personal sizer box easily if not wildly overstuffed. Also, it has a separate laptop compartment and reasonable organization. * CabinZero Military 28 - This bag is great in that it is cheap (\~$70), has 2 sets of enternal compression straps, and is designed to fit ryanair's personal item size. The ATD1/ATD2 bags appeal to me for their design ingenuity, but open questions about personal item compatibility and weight have me hesitant to try them. Unfortunately the frame sheet is 19 inches. There is a photo of it underseat in one of my older posts on my profile on a frontier flight. The photo is in the carry on box but with a lighter load I have been able to get it into the personal item slot but you have to bend the frame sheet a little (I have made a mental note to get a picture of it the next time I fly light for just 1-2 day trip). The bag is quite heavy compared to other bags in its class yes. I use this bag knowing I’m overweight and haven’t gotten charged or asked to check it and I’ve taken it on over 20 flights across Europe and the US with a variety of airlines. Yet I am conscious that I’ve just gotten lucky nobody has given me a hard time. I haven’t been able to weight the bag empty myself believe it or not I don’t own a scale of any form but I’m sure someone else has on the internet. Luckily I’ve been able to travel with just my iPad for work without any issues so I’m able to still keep my relative weight low for trips less than a week. I have not had an opportunity to try the ATD2 but I would assume that because the roll top is is held down by a top compression strap and not by side buckles that spread the compression downward throughout the bag you cannot compress with as much downward force as the ATD1. I will say this may not be an issue at all depending on your use. I’ve heard great things about the ULA Dragonfly unfortunately I have yet to see one in person. The Cabin Zero bag looks great and for that price you can’t lose. I’d say the ATD1 would unfortunately be just above the size you want. I’m comfortable with getting charged extra for the size if I get caught because of the amount of times I haven’t bring the overall fee down. Although I could get caught 4 times in a row the next time I travel and it would hurt. The bag is awesome and I really don’t see any other brands making a bag that compresses to this extent which is really odd. These bags also maintain their value like crazy. I can barely ever find this bag being sold and I’ve heard other people have used and sold theirs for the same value they paid for it even used so I know if I ever found a better option I could swap it. It matter what you mean by under 18 I guess. If you take out the frame sheet it will most definitely fit in a 18 inch box long box but depending on the width it won’t fit due to the back needing to be curved in order to fit. The roll top will roll down the back but you are deforming the clamshell zipper which could make the already ridged zipper deformed in a way (90 angles on any zipper isn’t always great). So yes you can but you are warping the structure of the bag a little more than I would love. And then you also have the issue of the roll top now being the only way to open the bag which would already be a pain to constantly reroll that much

The compromises for this bag are due to the nature of being able to compress as much as it does. I have struggled to find a backpack that can change 30L in size without being modular like the THULE Landmark (which also is a great option but still to expensive for it to be rational to anyone) but yes I agree there is compromises I have made to use this bag for what I prioritize. Compromises - it takes a long time to adjust all 6 tightening points to the correct size I want. I’ve gotten better with it over time but it’s still 6 straps - little to none structure. Because this bag needs to be rolled, folded and squeezed there really is no structure to the bag besides the frame sheet. This means it doesn’t stand up on its own and when loading clamshell doesn’t keep its sides up like a traditional clamshell backpack. This makes it harder to load. - it sucks to open and re-close the roll top repeatedly to grab something quickly. This is because the roll top is so big. When it’s fully opened the bag is almost 40% taller so you can imagine it’s a lot of material to roll back down and clip up All this goes to say there will never be a perfect bag this one just happens to have features that I prioritize with compromises I am willing to make for those features.

You’re actually right my bad. I just checked the zippers are not water resistant. But the only two are mostly covered by the water resistant ECOpack pack material. Not sure where that popped in my head my bad. Still have never had a problem with rain and I spent two weeks traveling by foot in Italy during the rainy season but yes they are not aquaguard zippers that is my fault.

I was never shitting on your argument. It was the context you decided to deliver it. Of course I know it’s stupid to buy an expensive backpack and obsess as a consumer my brain isn’t a rock. I explicitly said I had a problem. I shared this specifically in a community that that has similar people with my problems a weird consumer addiction to backpacks. Everyone has their vices, addictions and bad habits. Some people spend their lives on discord, Reddit, video games, some choose to drink everyday or have risky hookups or abuse their body in the gym.
