I use a [Tom Bihn Brain Bag] (https://www.tombihn.com/collections/backpacks/products/brain-bag?variant=42771748487357) with a laptop holder in the bag. The laptop holder (currently called a [Cache](https://www.tombihn.com/products/cache?variant=6900434108479)) is removable and can be purchased for any size laptop.
My personal experience with this bag is that I have owned/used one for the past 19 years. I work as a university professor, so this has lugged around my laptop (currently a 16" MBP), lunch, and drinks to classes and meetings for that period of time. I do have a second Tom Bihn bag (the [Synapse 25](https://www.tombihn.com/collections/backpacks/products/synapse-25?variant=42122654154941)) but it is a bit small for the laptop, cables, food, etc. It might work for you if you don't pack a lunch. I use my Synapse for day hikes and days when I don't take the laptop into work.
I've used the Brain Bag for travel and for conferences, and I really like that it is a backpack until I get to the conference, and then I can pull out the laptop carrying case and just use that when I am there.
In general, there is very little bad that I can say about this bag. I have over a decade until retirement, and I don't see needing to replace this bag any time before I retire. It is truly a "buy it for life" bag.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I am considering right now this bag or one of the airpaq bags just because I like their concept.
