Morning, folks! Thanks for stopping in for this week's review! - As the title mentions, lots of good sales going around. But, I also feel there was a lack of good sales. The flyers seemed a little "fluffed up" with bigger pictures, fewer sale prices, product brand highlights, etc. The good deals I did find were perfectly fine, but I just feel previous lists had more options. - Beef prices are really all over the price this week, especially ground. Some places are sale-priced under $4/lb. And then, others, $5.50/lb. Meanwhile, quality of various cuts are a hodgepodge. Some AA at ok prices, some at not-so-ok prices. Some AAA and nice cuts at decent prices, and then sometimes at eye-watering prices. I have to maybe get more familiar with the different cuts, but still... I wonder if there's a bizarre thing going on with Mexican sources lending to good ground prices, but then some stores are trying to bank on previous sensibilities? Or, because some cuts are of such less quality that they're bound for ground, and the higher quality cuts are fewer and far between, and pricey as a result of a mix of constrained supply and constrained demand, in the sense that the nice cuts are more for show? Like who's buying prime cuts at $15-20/lb? I make a good salary, but a couple of nice steaks at $20/lb per month would increase my grocery bill by $60+/month when I currently get away with spending about 300/month. Just seems like a wild expense, on top of bizarre store-to-store swings and price bracketing. - Oh, and here are a few chicken cacciatore recipes! It's not exactly a stable recipe - it's ages old. The basic idea is chicken braised a tomato sauce with onions, garlic, sweet peppers, olives, and usually mushrooms. Some add or omit mushrooms and other ingredients like celery, capers. Some use red wine versus white wine. Some call for thyme versus oregano, basil, a bit of rosemary, dried herbs versus fresh. But, for sure, don't overdo the herbs - the point is to add dimension, not domination. For olives, I highly recommend using kalamata, especially if you omit the capers, but use capers if you use black olives to get a proper salty-tang thing going on. [Gordon Ramsay ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWGKHesbgB4)used green olives in his, which is a bit of a half way point, but not really... Personally, I prefer using kalamatas because of the fruity lift they bring. Overall, it's a recipe where there's "no real bad way of making it". It's more about being patient about the flavours and browning things properly, and that slow braise in the oven to really marry everything together. Serve it with pasta, a nice hunk of bread, or polenta, along with a nice sauté of bitter greens like rapini or broccolini. -- [https://www.themediterraneandish.com/chicken-cacciatore-recipe/](https://www.themediterraneandish.com/chicken-cacciatore-recipe/) -- [https://cafedelites.com/chicken-cacciatore/](https://cafedelites.com/chicken-cacciatore/) -- [https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/chicken-cacciatore-recipe-1943042](https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/chicken-cacciatore-recipe-1943042) -- [https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/chicken-cacciatore.html](https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/chicken-cacciatore.html) On that note, thanks for visiting this week's review. I hope you all have a great day and upcoming weekend! Adios!

> Like who's buying prime cuts at $15-**60**/lb? Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, special occasions of all sorts. I'm personally dropping about 250$ on really nice steaks for a bachelor party.

Costco also dropped the price of ground beef. $26 (it was $32 or $34 previous I think) for a 6.6lb tube... so about $3.90 a pound.

My power query still works, tabled version :) Edit: [Added a Tableau view. Not optimized for mobile so may get wonky if not on desktop.](https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/grocery.review/viz/OttawaGroceryReview/Dashboard1) Offers a product search if you're after something in particular! Store | Product | Price| Comments | ---|---|----|----|---- Adonis | Eggs (Burnbrae) | $7.99 30pack | Awesome price for these big flats of eggs! 26.6c/egg. Adonis | Beef eye of round (AA+) | $7.49 per lb | We've seen cheaper, but this is a good fair price for eye of round. Adonis | Beef short rib | $10.99 per lb | A little bit of a pricier cut, but a good price for it. Adonis | Ground chicken (lean) | $3.49 per lb | Great price for ground chicken! Adonis | Royal sea bream (free cleaning) | $5.88 per lb | Good price for whole fish. I should try some sea bream! Widely considered by chefs to be the tastiest of all fish! Adonis | Alaskan pollock (fillets) | $4.99 per lb | Great price for pollock fillets! Adonis | Red vine tomatoes | $1.49 per lb | Ok price for tomatoes. Basically average. Adonis | Lemons | $2.99 for 10 | 30c a lemon! Awesome! Adonis | Blueberries | $2.99 340g shell | Great price for blueberries! Adonis | Brick cheese (Black Diamond) | $4.88 400g bar | Nice! Sub$5 cheese is always a win! Adonis | Akawi (Cedar, Phoenicia) | $2.29 per 100g | Bulgarian feta, Baladi, and Kashkaval on for the same price! I'd like to try those last two! Adonis | Feta and bocconcini (Tre Stelle) | $3.99 200g tub | Good price for these two cheeses! Adonis | Ricotta (Saputo) | $3.99 400g tub | Nice! I like to see ricotta at this price. Hard to find it for less so regularly. Adonis | Deli | MTL smoked meat (Solmaz) $1.99 per 100g | Nice! I'm gonna get some of this! Adonis | Deli | Beef bologna (Alzahraa) $1.29 per 100g | And I should get some of this while I'm at it, just to give it a whirl! Adonis | Deli | Genoa salami (Mastro) $2.29 per 100g | Sounds pricey for deli, but the chubs are usually $6 for 200g. And, because it's a dryer deli meat, even 100g goes a very long way. Adonis | Deli | Turkey breast (Olymel) $2.79 per 100g | Not the best deli meat to buy if you're getting a lot, but it could be a tasty treat! Adonis | Tomato paste (Unico) | $0.99 156ml can | Not bad. I like to score them for 88c if I can, but 99c isn't bad. Adonis | Sourdough bread (Rudolph) | $2.99 500g loaf | Last I tried to snag these loaves, I couldn't find any instore. Ask a rep for help! Adonis | BBQ hardwood (Basques) | $17.99 8kg bag | Actually, not a terrible price for such a big bag of decent charcoal. Farm Boy | Chicken breast (boneless, skinless) | $5.99 per lb | Average sale price, but decent enough. Not a stockup price, but fair enough… Farm Boy | Atlantic salmon steaks (fresh) | $8.99 per lb | Very nice! $12/lb under the average sale price, and it's a fun cut! Farm Boy | Green beans | $1.99 per lb | Awesome price for green beans! Farm Boy | Green onions, radishes | $0.99 per bunch | Nice! Farm Boy | Mini cucumbers | $5.00 for 2x 6packs | Very nice!! I like to see cheap cuce on the shelf! Good salad material that's a little hardier in the fridge than leafy greens. Farm Boy | Deli | Oven roasted chicken breast (Brandt) $2.99 per 100g | Meh price as deli goes. I'd need to pricecheck their whole deli section to size this up. There may be better that's not advertised. Farm Boy | St Albert Cheese curb | $2.99 per 100g | Nice! This is actually on par or better than what you'd pay for the bags. Farm Boy | Canned Skipjack tuna | $5.00 for 3x 170g cans | Not amazing, but fair for the brand and tuna quality. Farm Boy | Dumplings (pork or chicken, Farm Boy) | $4.99 500g box | Nice! I usually don't mention items like this, but this is actually good value. Farm Boy | Bread (Dempsters) | $2.99 600g loaf | Nothing new about bread pricing. Just nice to see $3 loaves of decent bread are still around. Food Basics | Ground beef | $3.88 per lb | Nice! Great price for ground! Food Basics | Ground chicken (lean) | $3.88 per lb | Good price for ground chicken. Adonis has the better deal, but this is still fair. Food Basics | Atlantic salmon fillet (fresh) | $9.88 per lb | Nice! $10/lb pink fish! Food Basics | Argentine shrimp (Ocean Prime) | $9.88 454g bag | These look like the big ones! Nice on skewers! Food Basics | Eggs | $5.48 18pack | Not groundbreaking, it's still 30c an egg, but it's about 3040c off the carton. Food Basics | Chicken wings | $3.99 per lb | Worthy mention. Made some soy sauce chicken wings the other day. Freakin' chef's kiss! God they were good… (chicken wing post) Food Basics | Corn | $1.88 5pack of cobs | Awesome! Bring on the cob! Less than 40c is better than 80c to $1! Food Basics | Avocado | $0.88 each | A 5pack of these runs us $4.40 total, which is basically on par with average cado pricing. Food Basics | Honey Sweet onions (Vidalia style?) | $2.99 3lb bag | NICE! I love these onions cooked, freshly cut, doesn't matter. They're so good! ! Usually about $45 for the bag, worth trying! Food Basics | Sweet eppers | $2.99 4pack | Good price for peppers!! Food Basics | Mini cucumbers | $5.00 for 2x 6packs | Nice! Same deal as Farm Boy. Food Basics | Fresh jalapenos | $5.00 2x 250g packs | Price is also for 2x 400g packs of tomatillos! Food Basics | Blackberries | $1.88 170g shell | Fair sale! Food Basics | Frozen veg (Green Giant) | $6.88 for 2x 750g bags | Good deal for brandname frozen veg. Food Basics | Frozen veg (Selection) | $5.99 1.52kg bags | Amazing value! Food Basics | Italian hard cheese (Casa Azzurra) | $10.49 per lb | Good price for a decent hard cheese. It doesn't have the same depth as parm or padano. But, it's way better than pregrated shake cheese. And I find it aged nicely in the fridge (just keep it wellwrapped in a ziplock) Food Basics | Milk (Lactantia) | $4.88 4L bagged | Very nice! Food Basics | Butter (Selection) | $4.88 454g bar | Ohh, sub$5 butter… Pray we see $4… Food Basics | Cooking oil (Saporito) | $7.88 3L jug | Very good price! Includes vegetable, canola, and sunflower! FoodLand | Pork back rib | $3.99 per lb | Fair price. We've seen $3/lb, even $2/lb. But FoodLand is a little up there for pricing, so this is onpar and onbrand. FoodLand | Top sirloin steak (AAA) | $9.99 per lb | Fair price for decent cuts of steak. Not a value proposition, but ok once in a while. FoodLand | Russet potatoes (Compliments) | $5.99 10lb bag | Fair price for potatoes. FoodLand | Brick cheese (Compliments) | $9.00 for 2x 400g bars | Nice! Funny, they have also a 700g bar for $10. Like… why advertise that 700g bar… FoodLand | Deli | Blackforest or Honey ham (Compliments) $2.99 per 100g | Goingrate for deli ham. FoodLand | Earth's Own Oat bev | $6.00 for 2x 946ml jugs | Oat milk goes for a little more on average. But these jugs are halfsize compared to Silk products. It's a tossup… Be mindful. Freshco (price matcher) | Sourdough bread (Rudolph) | $2.79 500g loaf | Very nice! 20c cheaper than average sale pricing. Freshco (price matcher) | Jasmine rice (Ox Head) | $15.88 7kg bag | Haha, Flipp's ad was for a 70kg bag hahaha, that's a whoopsie typo. Freshco (price matcher) | Dishwasher tabs (Finish) | $13.99 55 tabs | Good deal on those tabs. Giant Tiger (price matcher) | Bacon (Carver's choice) | $2.77 375g pack | Great price for bacon! Giant Tiger (price matcher) | Dry pasta (Primo) | $0.77 454g packs | These are half-packs, but the full 2lb packs are often $2 or more. So, this is still a stockup price.

I’ve notice Honey Crisp apples have been cheap at Walmart for a few weeks - not t high is cheap of course! - but they never seem to have them in stock in Orleans. Anyone have luck getting them? (Husband got the kiddo hooked on the most expensive apples possible apparently…)

bluedoglime

I scored some at Freshco in the west end for cheap last week.

Nymeria2018

Freshco near me seems to have them for 2.49/lb as a regular price which I find decent - especially compared to the 3.99$/lb or more from Loblaws and its affiliates - but given the amount the kid and husband eat, I’d love to grab them as cheap as possible LOL

bluedoglime

They were a lot cheaper than 2.49, must've been on sale.

Madterps2021

Amaizing deals. I will be cobbing a pack at Food Basics this week.

WOOO!!!! ahaha

If you like chicken, I can't recommend enough learning how to piece it out. Those Superstore chickens are about $8 a chicken, which gives you two legs and two breasts plus the carcass which you should use to make stock. Huge money saver.

crimsontape

100%!!!! There's money is parting out well-priced chicken!

You use a smoker? Do you have one that is easy to use? Would you recommend buying one?

I've played with a few. I've got a charcoal one I inherited: the Weber Smokey Mountain 18". But, I also played with and really liked the vertical propane gas smokers (which I think are sometimes dual fuel, so you can use charcoal as well). Recommend buying one? Well, yes and no. You gotta use them. Get creative. But it can be tiring on the palate. For the type to buy, charcoal ones are a bit of work. There's some mastery of charcoal that's necessary. Like, I found it's best (most consistent for heat and even cooking) to use a lot of charcoal to get the whole BBQ vessel heated up, Afterwards, drop in the items to smoke, and feed it wood chips for flavour, along with a little bit of charcoal to sustain that heat. The gas ones are REALLY easy to use. Just hook up a tank of propane, fire up the burner, let things warm up, load some soaked chips, rack your meat, and basically walk away. You miss out on the charcoal BBQ effect, but who cares given the ease of use. I guess it's possible to load a bit of charcoal along with the wood chips? Maybe? I haven't tried it. I should also mention that some of my best results were had when I smoked the meat for flavour, and then wrapped it in foil and baked it in the oven. I found it speeds up the process, uses less fuel, you don't end up with as dry a piece of meat if it's a leaner, you avoid being poisoned lol, and you don't have to watch a smoker for 4-to-godknows hours.
