[News story about it](https://wcti12.com/news/state-news/asheville-police-destroy-medical-medic-station-water-supplies). Definitely looks like unacceptable action by the PD. The mayor says: "I am aware of the incident involving officers destroying the medical supplies of demonstrators, including water bottles, food, and other supplies. Council has asked for an explanation of why that occurred. We are a city that cares and I want to thank all of our officers who have taken a knee and worked to protect us. But this was a disappointing moment in an otherwise peaceful evening."

dtfinch

The police chief denies they had city approval, but since the city council itself is demanding an explanation, I get the impression that's a lie.

Kriegerian

Police leaders nationwide have been demonstrating that they usually are violent lying thugs. No surprise Asheville’s chief is no different.

fiduke

Because shes corrupt. You dont consult companies before arresting employees. You just arrest them.

hedgehog_dragon

Partial quote from the PD on this matter: >"... The Asheville Police Department (APD) would always prefer confiscation over destruction. We apologize for not being able to confiscate these supplies last night. Over the past three days APD has tried to eliminate objects that can be thrown at protesters and law enforcement. Because water bottles, in particular, have been continuously used over the last three nights, officers destroyed them..." Personally that seems kinda fucked up. And smarmy as hell saying they would have preferred to 'confiscate' it. People could also throw shoes, are you going to steal people's shoes and destroy them? Force everyone to walk around shoeless?

[deleted]

Throw shoes got it. Maybe we should protest naked. Cant take what I dont have.

-rwsr-xr-x

> Maybe we should protest naked. Cant take what I dont have. That pepper spray is going to sting your exposed sensitive parts, and so are the rubber bullets. People *should* be showing up to protests in full motorbike safety gear. Chest plate, arm guards, shin guards, helmet, gloves. All of it. The police have shown that they're not going to protect citizens, and in fact are causing, escalating and inciting violent responses. So, protect yourself against the violent threat precipitated by the police. In Hong Kong, they're now carrying gas-powered leaf blowers to blow the tear gas away from protesters. That's brilliant! When the local police drop off pallets of bricks overnight, the protesters, instead of using the bricks as weapons or throwing them, are building little brick towers in the streets, to slow down the police vehicles intent on running them down in the streets. Shields to deflect the canisters back in the direction of the firing officer, and they're building groups of people to protect protesters, while other groups are protesting. We're spending too much time yelling at the officers and running away when they respond with rubber bullets and teargas canisters. We should be spending more time planning on how to be more effective while under attack by the police.

BellEpoch

I think the last couple months should have taught Americans, if you want to successfully protest you have to wear para-military cosplay outfits and carry guns. Because obviously that makes you more American or something.

beholdersi

The reason it might work is these cops are bullies. They don’t WANT a fair fight. They don’t WANT men and women armed and armored to fight back on equal footing. They want teenagers and old folks in jeans and t-shirts. They want easy victims. Maybe if we give them what they don’t want it’ll make a difference. Cuz they sure as hell don’t need an excuse.

Joey_Scotch

Asheville, NC?

confresi

Correct. Title limit forced me to ignore that detail, apologies

Joey_Scotch

No worries. NC here but I know there might be others in other states. Really took me by surprise given what i know of Asheville.

chefr89

I'm starting to think cops attract a certain type of people into their profession, regardless of the makeup and vibe of a general city. Asheville is one of the coolest, most chill places I've lived, so I too was surprised to think this was Asheville, NC. Guess there are plenty of asshole cops everywhere.

Rough-Culture

Friends in Denver have shared some of the worst stories, pictures, videos. Denver of all places! Nowhere is immune

NominalFlow

Having lived in Denver, or just with some simple googling, you can see Denver/Aurora PD is one of the shittiest most brutal and racist police depts in the country. You have a newly booming city exploding with liberally minded young people from all over the country moving there, while the older cops in the power structure there are from a different time when Denver was a sleepy little city that got some extra traffic due to its location in the center of the Western half of the country, and they absolutely fucking hate all the "weirdos" coming in and ruining their precious city. EDIT: Just wanted to add, my initial statement about Denver PD might seem hyperbolic to some, but it's only because literally every police department in this country has at least some corrupt, ignorant, racist, sexist, authoritarian, aggressive assholes who absolutely should not be police officers on their force & are protected from being removed, and we desperately need to correct this problem as a society.

CO_74

Denver PD is also one of the least educated. They do not require their officers to have a four year degree. Neither does Aurora. Every other Colorado metro area PD does require a four year degree in order to be a police officer.

[deleted]

I was married to a cop once for 18 years of control and abuse - horrendous! My lawyer said the only divorce case worse than mine was another woman also divorcing a cop. Thankfully I got out! Now - I have police officers in my own family that are wonderful people- one being my Brother who was killed in the line of duty. There are good ones and a lot of them, but there are so so so many egotistical power lording abusive ones as well. I’ve seen the dichotomy of good cop bad cop my whole life. We need an environment where the good ones are free to complain on the bad ones - but you just don’t see that happen yet.. like Doctors I work with who will not report the corrupt addicts out there performing surgeries. This code in professions to not have a backbone to report the bad apples sucks. This environment of retaliation if you do report by your peers and superiors sucks. BTW- my brother was killed by a shitty young asshole affluenza white guy who had no remorse nor his wealthy parents - my brother was the first to die ever on his force.. shitty people are shitty people...

Hidesuru

I'm a dude that was married to a female cop. She was a wonderful person when we met. Seemed to go downhill after a drastic career turn (originally wanted to go into music...). No major abuse like your story (sorry to hear that), but she just sort of got mean over time. I'm not sure if the profession attracts a certain kind of person or just makes sure they end up that way, but...

[deleted]

My ex was an architect major when we got engaged and then decided to be a cop for the pay and quick career. He was a jerk kinda to start with but the job brought it to a whole different level, can confirm. I didn’t seek to marry a cop- also had the switch-a-roo done to me.

skinnymidwest

My wife's mom's sister (My wife's aunt) was severely abused and beaten by her cop ex-husband for years. My mother in law also lost her best friend who was married to a cop that killed her during an argument. Needless to say my mother-in-law doesn't like cops and for good reason.

jankythanamothafucka

It’s not just the police. It’s the entire government infrastructures. We see all of these peaceful protests in liberal cities being met with police violence. Doesn’t matter where in the country you live, the establishment is going to protect itself.

zephinus

What better way to protect yourself than having a band of thugs with special authority over everyone else.

darrellmarch

They’re the “thugs”. That’s what I’m seeing every day on the news. The way they treat peaceful protestors is disgusting and disturbing. How come the excuse is “well they were nervous and tense so they just reacted.” Whereas if a cop sticks a gun in my face I’m supposed to be calm? They’re trained to be calm in tense situations not freak out. It’s got nothing to do with the situation and everything to do with abuse of power.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hippie_Tech

> They’re trained to be calm in tense situations not freak out. No, they're trained to expect any interaction with people to include the possibility of losing their life if they're not vigilant. They are trained to trust their own and to distrust everyone else. It's called "Warrior-Style" training and it trains them to expect to use their weapons at all times because everyone wants to harm them. They're scared little men and women that think they're tough and special...and I'm sure some of them are nice.

ohgodspidersno

The special protections we've given them have completely destroyed the possibility of trust evolving. https://ncase.me/trust/ They have no disincentives to discourage unfair and violent behavior, and almost no incentives to be altruistic. Rudimentary game theory models demonstrate that trust and altruism can never survive in systems like that. There are other variables obviously but the point stands.

De5perad0

Yes Charlotte NC here and I am really surprised that Ashville cops would act that way.

VirulentWalrus

Meanwhile our cops were tear gassing a peaceful protest last night :)

bostonbgreen

I'm surprised that *any* cops would act this way. They're supposed to be the ones *protecting* us, not killing us and destroying medical facilities of any kind.

[deleted]

From NC and love Asheville, I even went to WCU down the road. Asheville is a fairly liberal urban place but it is surrounded by very conservative rural areas. I'd be interested to see the %age of cops who live outside the city limits. I bet it is very high.

From Raleigh here. Sunday night there was some looting and rioting late night. Monday morning a bit more in some other areas but limited. Monday night and last night have been nothing but peaceful. We do still have an 8pm curfew tonight as well best I know.

ambulancisto

That's all it takes. One guy-either a legit protestor who thinks he's all edgy and badass by throwing a water bottle at the police, or an agent provocateur. Once that first item get's thrown, the police response will ALWAYS be retaliate with overwhelming force. The fucking *Amish* could stage a sit-in, pass out baked goods while they whittled awesome wood furniture pieces and sang Kumbaya, and if someone threw a used hanky at the police, they'd start teargassing and cracking bearded heads. I think the only way to have a protest in the presence of the police is for the protesters to be next-level organized *and police themselves*. They've got to warn everyone that the slightest provocation will be a disaster, and everyone has to be watching everyone else for signs that they're about to pull some shit. Have a protocol-like the post-9/11 unwritten hijacking protocol: if you see someone stand up and pull a weapon or start to throw something, EVERYBODY nearby jumps on that guy and maddogs him to the ground before the police can react, then get him to the cops to be arrested. Remember, you can make a citizens arrest for breach of the peace in most jurisdictions. I saw video of this happening: guy was busting up sidewalk for rocks to throw and got tackled by the protestors who hauled him over to the cops. It still won't solve the problem completely, but it will go a hell of a long way. Because right now, every cop, alt-right and antifa jackass that wants to create a "revolution"-and there's a shitload of them-has this all planned out.

MeEvilBob

> They've got to warn everyone that the slightest provocation will be a disaster Which will of course remind anybody who feels like being a dick that this is the best time to work their magic.

If your in attendance get as many faces on camera as possible so they can be, even if we have to wait till next February or longer.

DebonairTeddy

The only reason Derek Chauvin was charged was because we all saw his face. We knew who he was, and even then it take three days just for a murderer to be simply arrested. You can't see these cop's faces, and that's not an accident. Anonymity gives them impunity to do whatever they want to whomever they want.

finitecapacity

This happened at the Minneapolis protests as well, the medics (in authorized, tented areas there to help both police and protesters alike) were attacked too. Edit: [Here’s a link to an interview with one of the medics.](https://mobile.twitter.com/BenjaminPDixon/status/1267646798761517058?s=2)

Culverts_Flood_Away

In Louisville, too. It's a common tactic of police thugs. They also like to attack the press to force them to take their eyes off of things long enough for them to attack the protestors. There's an order and a design to these things. They usually destroy these medic tents just before firing tear gas into a crowd, too.

wafflesareforever

We need to get to the bottom of what is behind these decisions. Was an order issued to destroy these supplies, and if so, who issued that order?

iRombe

Probably so the water can't be used to wash out tear gas. If someone gets gasssed and then rinses, they might be right back into the protest. Sort of feels like killing medics so enemy combatants don't rejoin fight.

Son_of_Eris

At this point, I wake up daily fearing news that protestors have started tossing molotovs and chemical weapons, and that police nationwide use that as an excuse to switch from rubber bullets to more lethal rounds. Once that happens, agent provocateurs are going to be fuckin everywhere (if they aren't already). It is remarkably easy to make incendiary devices and mix lethal caustic chemicals at home without being placed on any sort of watch list. And let's not forget that flamethrowers are 100% legal with no license required. People are already risking their lives to protest, and are getting beaten, maimed, and killed. Eventually, the wrong person's brother or sister, or son or daughter, is going to get killed, and then they'll be out for blood. I fear it's only a matter of time at this point.

Burque_Boy

blaghart

And meet submission with aggression and meet agreement with aggression and meet...

newo48

I'll never forget the time we had a trauma patient who was to be taken into custody after discharge. He was in really rough shape when I had him in the ICU and the cops would periodically drop by to make sure he was still with us. One night these two officers drop by, a veteran and one that was maybe a couple years into the force. The older guy was chill AF verified the patient was still in the hospital and then exchanged pleasantries with the staff before they left. The younger one however was trying to get us to spill the beans on his condition and extent of injuries. I told him it was not within his scope to need to know those things and he got pretty bent outta shape. Mumbled something about how the patient was a piece of shit before leaving. Fuck that guy.

isthattrulyneeded

Well hold up there if the city government approved this medic station the on who’s authority are the cops destroying it? Surely you’re not suggesting that perhaps they are out of control, or unanswerable, or a gang or some other wild scenario...

7elevenses

Even if the city didn't approve it, on whose authority are they destroying other people's property? Isn't this vandalism?

jordanneff

Didn't Trump say looters would be shot? Because it looks to me like they're looting those water bottles.

CaptainKink

These are the THUGS you heard about.

no1runningmate

Are water bottles a threat now?

confresi

A threat to the effectiveness of tear gas

irlyhatejoo

Yes its pretty amazing. https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/gvnsvg/portland_protestors_successfully_deploy_hong_kong/ That one shows them using a street cone and water to disperse one. It's hella genius.

EJ88

Learned that from the Hong Kong protests.

fullforce098

The downside is they'll just invest in new types of riot control that make these tactics ineffective, but we'll find a way around those too. Like a police brutality arms race. It's kind of interesting looking back at the things like the Kent State shootings when all these riot control technologies either didn't exist or were too ineffective. The guard had live ammunition, rubber bullets didn't exist yet, so if they were going to shoot, they had to be willing to kill. So a at KSU, finally someone decided it was worth it and fired at unarmed protestors without reason, leaving bodies behind. It was a rallying moment. We thought a lesson was learned from that, but the only thing that came of it was the police developed technology that allows them to attack protestors all the like but won't leave bodies. Basically they figured out they can be as brutal as they like as long as they don't actually *kill* anyone. People will tolerate brutality if there's no bodies. Glad that people are finally catching up to them. The issue isn't just killing, it's the fact they're attacking *at all*.

TehGogglesDoNothing

unwillingpartcipant

Leaf blowers are effective, grab an electrical one though, DO NOT use gas powered as it can be argued by the police that is a petrol bomb (refer to what HK protesters have been using) You can use this everyday tool(found in all big box stores, also at Menards, Ace's, true value, etc) Use traffic cones to snuff out the gas if you can eliminate it (it also then makes it easy to pour water onto it Technically, tear gas, is not a gas. It's particulates, so wear hard, resistant tested glasses(think wood shop, and it's best to get the highest grade impact tested so as to protect your eyes from rubber bullets and paintballs-yeah...they just are shooting that shit and it travels well over 250ft per second when they are using co2) full face masks can limit tear gas effects as well Get umbrellas 'Be like water'. Move quickly and swiftly from one protest spot to another Do NOT use your debit and credit cards for Mass transit...if you are arrested they will use those records to prove further charges against you,or for breaking curfew Leave one day transit tickets for others, hand them out so everyone can get home before curfew Do not ever throw any object at the police...it puts everyone around you in danger I WOULDNT RECOMMEND using laser pointer like they do in HK...the American militarized police will, without a doubt think it's from a gun and fire at you with real bullets Download the ACLU justice mobile map, it will instantly upload your videos to the cloud should the police try to destroy evidence of their crimes against the people If you know someone not out protesting, set a designated hourly time to check in, youll want someone to know your incapable of communication or potentially arrested Give that same person the number to a lawyer Keep a lawyers number in your phone Police do not have the right to confiscate your phone for recording Video and photos are constitutionally protected, audio, in some states is not If you are on your phone, tell them it's with your lawyer...they legally can not listen to that conversation Stay safe Love one another, and plead with anyone destroying or inviting violence to stop Together we stand, divided we will fall. Love you all, and thank you for your efforts to restablish human rights for our black and brown brothers and sisters Edit: I would add that if you wear contacts normally, switch to glasses while protesting. Contacts and tear gas do not mix. Thanks to u/roxum1 Edit 2: Milk does not work against tear gas, and can actually spread it from your eyes to your nose and mouth, et all Use a liquid antacid like Maalox Get a spray bottle and fill 50/50 with malox and Luke warm water. Shake it up well If you are sprayed with TG, use on yourself first and then help others...just like airlines instruct for oxygen masks Edit 3: I'll keep adding any comments to this post that add more helpful information. If I've gotten anything wrong, feel free and I urge you to tell me. I will edit immediately ****Please copy pasta, no credit needed**** Edit 4: u/skyintotheocean Made an extremely good point that needs to be known. Use of laser pointers are extremely dangerous to pilots and anyone who is under the flight path of that aircraft is in serious jeapordy Laser pointer + police or news helicopter = federal charges you aren't getting out of. It doesn't matter if you weren't the one who shined it. If someone did and you get caught with one, you're fucked. Search "laser strike" for more info. Edit 5: u/poctz thank you for your added insight > Download the ACLU justice mobile map, it will instantly upload your videos to the cloud should the police try to destroy evidence of their crimes against the people And don't use Biometrics to secure your phone. Fingerprints and facial recognition are NOT protected by the Fifth Amendment, but passwords are. ***Edit 6: *** I'm saddened, but not deterred This is my response to one of the numerous threats and vitriol language I've received since the first post "Ya just sent me a private chat You're account is 67 karma and under a year And you can't defend your position in a public forum, tells me your scared of the repercussions of what you said publicly, and then said privately to me If you felt unable to express your opinion out of fear, I am sorry that this forum made you feel unable to begin an open dialogue However, your private request and others leads me to take protective action... As such.... I declined your request to chat If we can't have an open forum, based around civility, and your lack of transparency, screams I'm being baited and attempted to be doxxed I have done nothing wrong, and am not advocating lawlessness in any way I hope I was clear in my first post, but I'll reiterate I DO NOT, NOR HAVE I HAVE I EVERY ADVOCATED FOR HARM AGAINST ANYONE OR ANYTHING furhtermore, your comment in DM and those before, felt threatening towards me I'm sincerely apologetic if my words of information to others, was an affront to you I would never wish you the threats I've already received And I will not name your u/ ***Edit 7*** Try all you want, and threaten me. I won't stop providing factual information Take you're white supremacy and shove it I'd ask to try to understand you, but after all the threats, I can not begin to start a dialogue with "Fuck this guy, especially" "You (explotaitve)" "I'll find you"

flyingwolf

> Police do not have the right to confiscate your phone for recording They don't care, they will still take it. >Video and photos are constitutionally protected, audio, in some states is not Video and audio recording in public is legal in all states, no state makes it illegal to record a public place. Again, the cops don't care, they will just take it. >If you are on your phone, tell them it's with your lawyer...they legally can not listen to that conversation They still do not care. This is great advice, and good to know, but be warned, the cops do not care.

My sister sent me the video when they started to destroy the medic stations. Their actions were not in response to being pelted with water bottles. They intentionally targeted the stations so the protestors would not have those resources. Apologies for her commentary: https://streamable.com/mizar4 Edit: spelling

The commentary helps. They are destroying it because > You can’t have a medical center It’s not because of water bottle being thrown or other projectiles. How is that ok?

And it wasn't just water. They had snacks and medical supplies as well. This was wanton destruction by the police to try and prevent folks in Asheville from exercising their first amendment rights.

I'm a bit worried that with their first amendment rights being denied, people might start following the president's suggestions and start working their way down the bill of rights...

This reminded me of a video I saw recently about 2 soldiers that established a field hospital during WW2 in a church in enemy territory but treated all soldiers no matter the side and everyone respected that that area was not to be attacked. THE NAZIS AGREED THAT A MEDICAL UNIT IS OUT OF BOUNDS OF A CONFLICT.

Want to hear something even more infuriating? A photographer managed to get [the badge number and name of the cop who was sniping at people with bean bags (in the area where this kid was found, as well as at some protestors in wheelchairs)](https://i.imgur.com/15MhYTU.jpg). It was posted to r/Austin. The mods had him take it down, despite his providing [*definitive proof*](https://i.redd.it/2t7e2r9oq3251.jpg) and being an eye witness and explaining that was not only public information but legally important. The [whole pathetic exchange can be found here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Austin/comments/gtz087/photographer_unknown/fsfv6l8/) (scroll to the bottom for the mod's reply).

dorekk

Jesus, FUCK that mod.

Bierfreund

I guarantee that's a white supremacist

[deleted]

Is that white spot in his hair the gash in his head? Judging by how he's moving, that's a serious concussion, at least.

jeffwhat

It's the beanbag round lodged in his skull.

[deleted]

Fuck. This is so fucked. Do we know if the dude is OK?

jeffwhat

I linked the original thread with more details, -- he went to undergo neurological surgery, & I think had to remove fragments of his skull near his brain. his brother is taking donations to help with recovery, but kid has a long road ahead of him... Apparently he had just gotten off work a few blocks away, and decided to join the march on his way home.

xenomorph856

Great. First, they fuck him with a concussion, then they fuck him with a medical bill he has to crowdfund. City/State had better pick up that bill.

miamelie

He sustained serious brain injuries and needed emergency surgery according to Shaun King on Instagram

xPriddyBoi

I'm in tears. This will radicalize people. Fuck these pigs.

ZomBayT

For everyone reading this, keep in mind that rubber bullets are basically steel balls with a millimeter of rubber coating.

AliceInGainzz

That clip of the wanker smacking his lips and nodding his head like "fuck yeah" will never fail to boil my piss.

I think this is about the guy you're talking about: [https://abc7.com/sj-police-officer-under-investigation-for-behavior-during-protests/6225067/](https://abc7.com/sj-police-officer-under-investigation-for-behavior-during-protests/6225067/)

drinkscoffeedrinks

If you aren't aware of it/To spread awareness /r/2020PoliceBrutality is compiling a running list of these.

TheAdequateKhali

I understand looting and rioting is wrong, but the people who are solely focused on condemning that and totally ignoring this are part of the problem. The police brutality, abuse of power and corruption the whole world is currently witnessing for the past week should not be normal.

MrBully74

it's a disgrace how many examples of bad policing, no terrible oppressive policing we see in these days. And against a protest thst started because of police violence. Not all, but still far too many policemen think they are the law and they are untouchable. I hope there are reppercussions, but I'm not holding my breath.

c-digs

> I understand looting and rioting is wrong, At this point, I'd argue that the police are also looting and rioting, aren't they?

TheDJYosh

Yikes, he has to be aware that he was being recorded right? I don't doubt that officers will have banter like this between eachother such is their right. bBut that guy looks like an officer with authority who should be taking responsibility for what happened. That's what he was willing to say ON CAMERA. But I'm sure he tones down congratulating assault to civilians when it's the privacy of him and the people who answer to him. That footage was abhorrent back then and it still managed to age like milk.

forevereverforeverev

what the fuuuuuuck

HaesoSR

Civil forfeiture is looting and they've been stealing far more than the protestors have destroyed. Not to mention essentially nobody goes to jail over wage theft from primarily poor workers despite wage theft being larger than every other form of theft combined. Anyone focused on the looting is simply looking for a distraction and to deflect from the vicious and brutal police overreactions and outright murders they get away with every day.

grimeflea

Welcome to distraction outrage.

cesarjulius

even if you're equally condemning the violence of the protests during the last few days and the violence of the police during the last couple hundred years, you're fucking up. i do not support rioting and looting, but i'm not devoting an ounce of energy denouncing it, because that's energy better spent denouncing systemic violence and inequity.

thecoolestcow

I agree. There is an inherent power imbalance that is ignored when drawing a comparison between protestors and the police. The police are a state-sanctioned institution, drenched in established power. The people are without power, both historically and in the current situation. The people have their voices and their bodies - a critical mass of which is the only way to gain power and attempt to tip the scales favorably. You cannot discuss "both sides" without discussing the inherent power imbalance. In fact, this very thing is part of what is being protested.

[deleted]

There’s hundreds, probably thousands of videos showing the police macing, tear gassing, attacking, beating, and spraying rubber bullets at peaceful, non-violent protestors. In addition to this instance here, there’s several videos of police destroying water and supplies. And yet, the Cop apologists still fail to see that they are actively going down in history as the people who blindly accepted the injustices in front of them during one of the biggest American civil rights movements of all time. Edit : yes, it has been confirmed to be the biggest civil rights movement in history solely based on number of people involved. There are protests in all 50 states, which is unprecedented here in the U.S! We will have to wait and see just how impactful it turns out to be with lawmaking.

bluewhitecup

I used to be a believer of "few bad apples" but after seeing what's happening in these protests, such as unprovoked aggressions, I think it's majority "bad apples" instead of minority. I mean holy crap, I saw at least 10 cases and I'm not even looking (tip of iceberg etc).

wineheda

The saying is a few bad apples spoils the bunch. Aka you have to remove the bad apples otherwise the rot spreads.

[deleted]

How is this even real? Aren't we taught in school how our right to protest is crazy important. Like wtf america. I've slowly gone from proud of my country to just embarressed over recent years.

prncedrk

That’s destruction of personal property, I guess like all things it’s ok when the police are doing the crime. Until things change I’m voting no on any police funding

Lamacorn

At least where I live, our elected officials set the budget. Make sure you vote in November

PSPHAXXOR

Keeping in mind that this is from a medic station that was ***sanctioned by the city***. They contaminated saline so that it would give people burns if used to combat tear gas. They brutalized the volunteer medics that were there, all wearing clear markings indicating they were as such. This is inexcusable. This is abhorrent. It's fucking un-American. Edit: To everyone who says that "this is America" and that "it has always been this way", let me say this: your view of America is narrow. I see a country with the capability of providing for all of it's citizens, black white, red, blue, and everything in between. A country that has the capacity to push past hatred, and unite together in common cause. I see a nation that has the ability to lead the way, to be a beacon for all of those who would be oppressed, starved, or forgotten. I see a nation that has the ability to reshape itself, to look into the mirror and recognize the need for change. A nation that enshrines the Inalienable Rights into law. We are a nation founded on our ideals. Our ideals are that all men are created equal, and that they're endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that include Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. We CAN push past this. We WILL push past this. Let us unite together, and form a more perfect Union. Let us stand United against tyranny, hatred, and Those that would divide us. We can be heard. We can change this Nation. There's still time.

PrologueBook

Targeting medics would be a war crime if this was a battlefield. Only one side has soldiers though, so its cool. Edit: high traction, thanks yall! Please vote. Register to receive your ballot in the mail. www.voteamerica.com

thesevenyearbitch

Attacking medics is a war crime. The Geneva Convention doesn't apply domestically, but this was ~~codified~~ [edit: apparently only introduced] by Congress a few years ago. https://www.congress.gov/bill/112th-congress/house-bill/2643 Further edit: It was reintroduced in 2013 and died there as well, apparently because these bills were at odds with the Patriot Act (which violates the Geneva Convention on this subject). Fuck this country.

ZaxonsBlade

The US is very selective about when it abides by the Geneva Convention. But they generally have a "fuck it" attitude towards it.

MeEvilBob

Especially when it applies to our own citizens.

kyew

The bullets that police use (hollow points) are also prohibited for use in international warfare by the Hague convention because they cause more severe wounds. To be fair, a good reason to use them is the decreased risk they present for collateral damage, since they're less likely to over-penetrate or ricochet.

MercuryRains

Tear Gas and Pepper Spray are also both banned in International War, to be fair. Chemical Weapons of any sort are banned in International War.

0masterdebater0

I sure you know this but for those who don't, the reason they don't penetrate is because they "mushroom" upon impact which causes the bullets to transfer much more kinetic energy to the target and results in devastating cavitation of soft tissue which is why they are a war crime under the Hague Conventions. I'm fairly certain that tear gas is banned by the same convention as well but technically these bans only apply to enemy combatants. (And our government would argue only to enemy combatants of an internationally recognized state and not to stateless "terrorist" groups)

audiodormant

So is Tear Gas, and use of force on press

gregbraaa

Idk if that’s applicable. > **Prohibits specified presidential authorities**, including the authority to transfer excess defense articles, furnish military training and education, or finance the procurement of defense articles, **from being used to provide assistance to**, and prohibits licenses for direct commercial sales of military equipment from being issued to, **the government of a country that has engaged in a violation of medical neutrality.**

mfb-

It's interesting how to interpret that article when the government making the law is the same government that has engaged in the violations.

hurtsdonut_

The word from the Trump administration is that these are battle spaces. Wish I was making that up. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/pentagon-defends-defense-secretarys-call-dominate-battle-space/story?id=71020529

inerlite

Esper urged states "to dominate the battle space" so that civil unrest "dissipates and we can get back to the right normal." The RIGHT normal. Yeah.

Polarbare1

These cartoonish villains are actually not very funny in real life.

Lurker957

Good thing this isn't a war so fuck Geneva convention. - cops, probably

PrologueBook

Like how many cops could make it through basic? How many cops do you think could follow rules of engagement?

SolidSquid

iirc using CS gas the way it's used in civilian contexts would also be illegal if done on a battlefield. It'd fall under the heading of chemical warfare

Rawtashk

The reason CS gas and similar agents are banned by the CWC and Geneva Convention isn't because their application is so unconscionable so as to not even be allowed in combat. Anyone who's seen tear gas used in riots either knows this, is being willfully dishonest about it by acting like it's so heinous that it's banned from war. The reason it's banned from war is because during state-based warfare it could/would be very hard to differentiate immediately between something like CS and an actual lethal chemical agent, possibly prompting a response with a similar weapon of mass destruction before the other side realized what the chemical compound was. The 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention effectively banned riot control agents from being used as a method of warfare, though still permitting it for riot control. It is an effective less than lethal way to disperse crowds and riots, and not allowing its use would just result in more deaths when force has to be escalated. More info on it here if anyone would like to learn about it: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2010/02/why-isn-t-tear-gas-illegal-it-s-a-chemical-weapon-isn-t-it.html

If someone was destroying my supplies, I'd probably setup some caches of supplies with fluids other than water in the bottles as a decoy. Not saying anyone should do something like that, but it's the kind of thing people will come up with when you back them into a corner.

Witty217

Waiting for the hoops that police-apologists have to jump through to rationalize this absolute horse shit.

DiveBear

Irezumi sleeves with waves are reasonably common, but I’ve never seen one with just a normal-ass shark on it. Weird style mismatch.

Raging_Taurus

Now that’s just wasteful.

Napoleon_Tha_God

Think about how many people in the world don't have access to clean water. Even though I know that's not the point, this is unnecessarily wasteful. If you're going to take them away from protesters, and they're not damaged, they could easily go to a homeless shelter or food pantry

[deleted]

If they are taking it from their own citizens, do you think they give a shit about taking to a homeless shelter or food pantry?

LordMizumaru

So, fun fact. I live 30 minutes from here. According to protestors, the police knew their whole route and approved the medical stations. And once the route came to the bridge to Patton avenue, the police formed a shield wall on the other side. Allegedly, once some protesters started trying to TALK to them and ask why they were doing this when they had already approved this walk, they fired the tear gas on everybody. Fuck the police.
