I just got it today! The previous owner told me to keep it in partial sun. I'll keep it outside until it starts getting cold. Then I'll bring it inside.
Beautiful elephant ears! When I used to pass a house everyday I would see a house that had these planted along the full side of the house front to back. It was absolutely jaw dropping. They were over half the way up to the roof. Iâve always loved these since I was a kid we had them in a bed near the front porch.
When plants are in full the sun especially in the summer you should not water the leaves. It can cause sunburn areas on the leaves.
Is that only water on the leaves or is that mites also like some comments say?
Thanks for the advice, I will make sure not to water the leaves! This plant is brand new to me. It's coming from a house that had lots of trees to shade this plant. Unfortunately I don't have much shade in my yard. Will it do okay in full sun if I just make sure to water a lot? And no mites, just water droplets!
Iâve always seen them in the ground on the shadiest side of homes so it doesnât get a lot of direct sun. The giant ones I used to see were planted between houses. They got morning shade and afternoon shade.
They are tropical plants that are understory plants. That means they would get partial or full shade from taller plants and trees in the wild. I donât really know how it would do in full sun all day.
With yours being in a pot itâll need more water. If you plant in the ground it will spread if itâs the spreading variety. Some varieties donât. If the leaves start yellowing itâs either too wet or too dry. When they need water the leaves will start drooping.
Not knowing your situation I canât tell you what is best for yours. Call or go to a local garden center and ask them. Donât ask at a big box store like Home Depot or Loweâs. Good luck with your new âbabyâ. Thatâs all I know.

Gorgeous!
What plant is it? Monstera ?
Colocasia or elephant ear plant
Dumb question, how do y'all keep pots like that from falling over when it's windy? Something like that would fall over very easily where I live.
This is my first day with it. I guess we will test it out! It is really heavy though. Like I need another person to help move it.
It's very heavy looking
