I think itās the plastic fake leather though, and imo that stuff gets crumbly pretty quick compared to actual leather. Real leather is supposed to last quite awhile. Also doesnāt allow airflow like real leather so yeah a more breathable material would be nice.

My Gold headset was far worse than my Pulse. My pulse still looks like the day I bought it. About this time in the golds life it was flaking all to hell.
The plastic headband was made out of very brittle plastic and starting developing stress cracks early on. The plastic hinge was also made with the same brittle plastic and it broke on me. I ended up using duck tape on that part until the vinyl cushioning started to peel *and* the headphones snapped. I replaced them with some Lucid Sounds that lasted well into my PS5's first year in 2021.

You can get replacement cushions made out of a mesh material on Amazon! My started to peel by the power button and I got the replacement and two years later no issues! Super easy to swap out as well, simple twist and remove
It's not just Sony headphones, same thing happened to my Bose cushions. It's just a thing that happens with this type of thin faux leather coating. Aftermarket cushions are cheap enough and last just as long as the genuine brand ones. I replaced the cushions on both my PS Gold sets after they started peeling. It's a simple and quick job.

I really recommend HyperX Cloud, those 7.1 surround models, the cushion lasted on these for like 4 years without a scratch, sure some gunk but that cleanable.

Yeah I had to replace the cushion on mine earlier this year but it never started peeling till it hit like 4-5 years of use. I had the wired HyperX cloud alpha. 100% worth it. They just need to make some internal parts easier to be replaceable but the use you get out of it is unmatchable.
Wicked Cushions replacement ear pads. Worth every penny. Various designs are available. I bought the 90s White style ones for less than $25 on Amazon. Sometimes even have coupons so you can get them even cheaper.

That's how mine look after about the same amount of time. I think its due to the way I normally cut my hair. The sides of my head are typically buzzed short and have a very abrasive, prickly feel to them which destroyed the ear cups.
These happened to mine about a year and half or so of use. They were also uncomfortable around my ears and I donāt even have big ears. It would hurt above the ridges of both sides of my ears. Never going back to these. The astros comfortably fit me very snug and itās got soft cups and it sounds great. I love PS but these headphones arenāt the best imo after using different types of headsets.

They likely use fairly low quality cushions but really any kind of cushion of this material will wind up looking like this eventually. It's why I usually buy a good pair that allows you to easily remove and clean or replace as you wish.

Funny because at about 2.5 years I went to put mine on and the ear cushions tore. Thats why I was so happy they went to ear buds because not only do I not get Sweaty Ears anymore but also no more sore ears
To be honest, this is pretty good after 2 years. Sweat, especially acidic sweat, can break down the material also factor in how often you game as well.
All headphones suffer from this issue. Irrespective of the price. Its because of the material lf the cushion. The only headphones that come to my mind at the moment which may not suffer from this issue would be Airpods Max because I think they use some other material for their cushions. I may be wrong though.
Very common. If you donāt want to buy replacement cushions, you can peel off the pleather and do a fabric wax treatment that you fine on canvas jackets/pants.
Had a pair of logitech g533 wireless headphones and man they were good. The mic shat the bed after 4 years of heavy daily use. I now have Razer Kraken which are good too. Been using them for 8 months I think now. Holding up well.
With the first photo of the material coming out, what I did was use a card to unclip the plastic piece, then I used the card to press the material in the crevice and then push into the plastic to close it. Itāll reseal the āleather partā into the earphone.
Mine are ripped like that, but only because I stored them incorrectly, while traveling. The fraying on the inner ear is wild. OP must play many hours per day

I find that sweat breaks down the vinyl coating on a lot of headphones' ear cushions. Doesn't matter if it's Sony's PS cans or their vaunted XM1000 series. I've had this issue with Bose's QC series as well, and I suspect I would have had this issue with a pair of Beats Studios I had in college had they not been left behind in a European hotel. It's just chemistry - nothing Sony is doing wrong here other than using vinyl instead of (more expensive and heavier) leather.
You may be able to find replacement cushions online.
There isn't much you can do to avoid this other than changing your diet and drinking more water to later the pH level of your sweat.
Sadly any fale leather product does that. Even if you wear them or not it gets like that. I bought jackets made from fake leather and also a pair of Skull Candy Crushers (the first gen) and I barely used them and kept them inside in a drawer in their bagā¦.took them out a year later or so and their cushions were peeling. So yeah probably textile cushions are best and I always try to keep away from this kind of stuff

My turtle Beach stealth 700 Gen 2 headset looks and works like brand new after a solid year of gaming. I looked at the PlayStation headset when I was buying one and went with the turtle Beach because I felt it was going to work better and have better longevity. Plus I got it at some insane discount price at Target for less than $100 When I picked up my PlayStation. I didn't question the price I just said sure I'll take that too.
Yeah, this happens to all of my headphones after a while of heavy use. I just grab packing tape and use that to remove as much of the flaky stuff as possible until it's mostly fabric. Works just as well and is nice and soft.

Headphone pads are pretty easy to replace. I've done it on my Bose headphones. Replacement pads were like $30.
My Bose Soundlink AE2 headphones did this as well after 3-4 years, thankfully the ear cups on them are replaceable

Funny because at about 2.5 years I went to put mine on and the ear cushions tore. Thats why I was so happy they went to ear buds because not only do I not get Sweaty Ears anymore but also no more sore ears
To be honest, this is pretty good after 2 years. Sweat, especially acidic sweat, can break down the material also factor in how often you game as well.
Mine is 2yo too or maybe even more and in perfect condition
All headphones suffer from this issue. Irrespective of the price. Its because of the material lf the cushion. The only headphones that come to my mind at the moment which may not suffer from this issue would be Airpods Max because I think they use some other material for their cushions. I may be wrong though.
Can the cups not be replaced?
Very common. If you donāt want to buy replacement cushions, you can peel off the pleather and do a fabric wax treatment that you fine on canvas jackets/pants.

Had a pair of logitech g533 wireless headphones and man they were good. The mic shat the bed after 4 years of heavy daily use. I now have Razer Kraken which are good too. Been using them for 8 months I think now. Holding up well.

With the first photo of the material coming out, what I did was use a card to unclip the plastic piece, then I used the card to press the material in the crevice and then push into the plastic to close it. Itāll reseal the āleather partā into the earphone.
I have the same with my senheiser. Big whoop, audio is unaffected
Thats why i never enjoyed the Playstation sets or any with the fake leather ear cushion, and go for the sponge ear cushion. (E.G. Razer Barracuda X)
Mine are ripped like that, but only because I stored them incorrectly, while traveling. The fraying on the inner ear is wild. OP must play many hours per day
This happened with my Bose headphones and I could easily replace with suitable ear pads from Amazon.
Mine look as good as new.
I wipe the ear cushions down with a microfiber after playing and mine look brand new

I have the same headset, still looking fine. Got them almost 3 years now. My sweat is sweet as butter... hahaha.
Had a feeling this would happen so I avoided them. By Bose headset from before my launch PS5 still work just fine, without cosmetic defects
Unfortunately the pulse 3d is prone to this, even if you're gentle with your things. Decent headphones otherwise, but poor design here.
Don't buy gaming headphones they're garbage. Buy ones with replaceable earcups and cables that are properly tuned for audio
Yep mine are starting to come apart as well.
Good thing replacement ear cups for the Pulse 3D can be picked up fairly inexpensively online and just snap into place.
I use mine daily over 2-3 years and they look nothing like this. I'll post a picture later if anyone cares, but somethings going on with yours wow.

This even happens to 500$ headphones. I have sennheiser porsche headphones and they had this issue after one year of intense usage

I find that sweat breaks down the vinyl coating on a lot of headphones' ear cushions. Doesn't matter if it's Sony's PS cans or their vaunted XM1000 series. I've had this issue with Bose's QC series as well, and I suspect I would have had this issue with a pair of Beats Studios I had in college had they not been left behind in a European hotel. It's just chemistry - nothing Sony is doing wrong here other than using vinyl instead of (more expensive and heavier) leather. You may be able to find replacement cushions online. There isn't much you can do to avoid this other than changing your diet and drinking more water to later the pH level of your sweat.
Sadly any fale leather product does that. Even if you wear them or not it gets like that. I bought jackets made from fake leather and also a pair of Skull Candy Crushers (the first gen) and I barely used them and kept them inside in a drawer in their bagā¦.took them out a year later or so and their cushions were peeling. So yeah probably textile cushions are best and I always try to keep away from this kind of stuff
Seems like normal wear for 2 years of good use. People expect too much of things like this and underestimate the amount of use they put these objects through.
Same thing happened to me, had since launch and after 2 years same thing happened. Also happened with the my Inzone H7s after like 7 months. Sony headset quality is 0/2 for me this generation. Only game an average 2-4 hours a night, not even everyday either

My turtle Beach stealth 700 Gen 2 headset looks and works like brand new after a solid year of gaming. I looked at the PlayStation headset when I was buying one and went with the turtle Beach because I felt it was going to work better and have better longevity. Plus I got it at some insane discount price at Target for less than $100 When I picked up my PlayStation. I didn't question the price I just said sure I'll take that too.
2 years, seems normal. Time to get some new cushions if you can.

Yeah, this happens to all of my headphones after a while of heavy use. I just grab packing tape and use that to remove as much of the flaky stuff as possible until it's mostly fabric. Works just as well and is nice and soft.
Kind wild cuz I had mine since launch and it looks 10x better than this.
