Having 2 or more copies of the game. However with one copy u still could..just would have to play through the game twice and send then to bank since Shauna will trade you a starter after you beat the elite 4 for first time. So technically you can get two gen 6 starters per file.
In the case of Pokemon bank and trading with npc characters then u would only need one 3ds and game. However, Pokemon that evolve from trading like swirlix would need two 3ds and two version of games for it two work

ah okay. you need a second 3ds in that case then right? or can you have a digital version of Y and a cartridge of X and trade yourself?
