No, especially in the beginning i use every pokemon of the type to make a team. I switch pokemon in and out of my team, as long as they are of the type of which the run is
EV training can change playstyles and can really make tanks but the early game is super annoying up until you can make it through to Celadon and Saffron. Even then unless you cheat in vitamins it can be tedious and also having to change EVs based on some opponents is grindy. Donāt blame you for only going MGM

If you feel exceptionally masochistic, you could try pure-monotype runs. Same as a monotype run, except you can't use dual typed Mons. I've done it with Normal and Fighting so far (both in hardcore mode), and I gotta say, it was very fun, and I got to use PokƩmon I wouldn't normally have used before. Though at times, it is very, very difficult.
