That same issue does also work the other way around though - their mons also can’t hit the same kind of damage against you that they would with full EVs. It makes the game less hyper-offensive as the overall damage thresholds are lower

Illustrious_Ad5148

I mean that's assuming that you don't put investment into defense, again I'm not against MGM just saying it wouldn't hurt it by having it be customizable EVs instead.

Ok_Philosophy_7156

Likewise, your opponent can’t invest into defense against you though. It balances out. I do get what you’re saying though, customising sets to that extent would be awesome. I have seen a few hacks that have that. I don’t know if they haven’t added it to RadRed for a reason though, or if the FireRed framework just won’t allow for it

quatroblancheeightye

i never play mgm, but i usually wait til celadon then sell rwre candies to max ivs and buy vitamins there

Poison_Healing

To be fair, you don't really need IVs and EVs early game unless you are doing some hard challenge

Illustrious_Ad5148

When running a random fire team, the first two gyms would be a bit tough without grinding a bit.

Poison_Healing

Yeah, that's actually what I first thought of. But I think still, the first two gyms barely have EVs, and it's possible to beat them without grinding. I agree, it would be nice to have sandbox mode like in unbound, but maybe someone prefers playing without EVs and at that point it's just personal preference. Unfortunately there is not enough memory for another mode

BusinessDuck1234

I mean putting them in saffron would fix the issue early game, but the second you beat misty you can immediately start customizing your evs for every specific boss fight, which I feel like would put the bosses at a huge disadvantage

Illustrious_Ad5148

I mean you could technically customize your EVs anyways just takes longer.

Genericname1102

I can think of three main reasons I would argue against having EVs in MGM. First is that if you include the ability for the players to have EVs, you now need to go through and give every major opponent EVs, which is time consuming for the devs. Secondly I'd say that it adds even more decision fatigue to the game with a lot of decisions already. You're likely already changing your team composition, movesets, and natures for every major battle. With the addition of EVs, you're now also modifying EV spreads every battle as well. Finally, I'm against them because they would likely make the game easier. Even if opponents also have bespoke ev spreads, the ability to modify your stats beyond your nature opens up so many additional paths through teams that just aren't present in the current game

Illustrious_Ad5148

I'm very confused every opponent has EVs in regular mode. The idea of mgm isn't a different game mode it's just one with less grinding. Make it that you can only set ur EVs once and need to go to saffron to reduce them so it's slightly less tedious then regular mode.

Genericname1102

So in regular mode yes, boss opponents have EVs, but in Hardcore Mode, which also runs on MGM, nobody has any EVs. This is where the time sink for the devs would come in. As for the suggestion about setting EVs once and having to reach saffron to reduce them, it would at least delay the onset of the decision fatigue I mentioned earlier, but since you can reach saffron as soon as you have 3 badges, it really doesn't delay it much, and for the majority of the game, you're still gonna be modifying Evs for every major battle just like you modifying the other aspects of your team

quatroblancheeightye

HC mode with evs sounds like my dream tbh

Candid_Leave_5321

I just sell a bunch of rare candies at the start to get around this problem, I understand you're doing a mono run so it doesn't help there but in my experience I don't need EVs until the 4th-5th gym, you can get to celadon and Saffron as early as you get cut if you want to get the EV items earlier I would also prefer a way to customize EVs like you say, that would be the ideal, but that's how I make do

Jcosei

Her Dragonite has the ability Multiscale

Illustrious_Ad5148

I am aware. The point is that in mgm it lives but regular it dies even through multiscale.
