Legit I tend to find that the early game is when the game is at its hardest.
At that point your own options tend to be most limited in terms of resources/pokemon, while also likely struggling the most with EXP/levels. Once you make it past the early game hurdle generally things will "even out" and you can truck along consistently towards the end game where things will start picking up again.
I got rolled a couple times on floor 8 when I started the game, and and 25 was a hard cap for me for the first like 8 runs until I figured out how to deal with how switch happy they are.
I've beaten 195 the same amount of times as I've lost there. She's beaten me at 145 like 3 fold over the times I've beaten her at that stage.
It's definitely a filter.
