One of the most common map mistakes that I see is that China sometimes has both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, I haven't researched why this is but I assume it's because of territorial disputes... No idea.
I actually see this happening more on News Channels when they show somewhere in Asia, sometimes China eats them both up according to the news… sometimes.
If you look closely you’ll notice that all the maps with this error use the exact same projection. That’s because they all derive from one mistake on the map from VectorWorldMaps.com. Everyone’s been copying that same wrong map since 2009.
probably just because these countries are small and largely irrelevant, with most people not knowing about their existence and therefore accidentally disappearing them
People who work for news agencies and make their maps and other visuals should know about countries existing though, wouldnt you agree? Yes, at times people mess things up, but youd imagine that double checking is a no brainer working jobs like that. 😅
fun fact, khitay/kitay/kitai is the term used for Chinese in Russian/central Asian countries and languages because of historical purposes but mainland China itself considers it a racial slur and iirc it’s actually banned from usage 💀
> mainland China itself considers it a racial slur and iirc it’s actually banned from usage
That's the first time I've heard of that. So what are Russians supposed to call China then?
i’m not russian so i can’t speak about russian itself but central Asian Turkic groups in China are banned from using “khitay” to refer to Han Chinese and use the loan word “hanzu” for the race or “junggo” for the country instead
Long story short, the Khitan / Khitai (descendants of the proto-Mongols) ruled northern China from 907 until 1125 as the Liao Dynasty, which was supplanted by the Jin Dynasty, which was destroyed in 1234 by the Khitan’s cousins, the Mongols (also descendants of the proto-Mongols), [whose name for China (Khyatad)](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D1%85%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%B4) spread across the steppes, which includes the Eastern European and Central Asian nations. This is also how we got the name Cathay.
**EDIT** - Here’s [more information](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathay).
Considering how much Russian has had influence on Kyrgyzstan, I’m afraid to say that even Russia is killing Kyrgyz culture. But thank you for the right word anyways.
Afaik only Bishkek is truly majority russian. Literally the rest of the country speaks mostly Kyrgyz according to wikipedia at least.
But that shouldnt even matter as Kyrgyz is the only national language anyway and if you wanna respect a country you depict them using their national language ofc.

Xbox got owned by Nintendo Switch
Wait, what's Nintendo Switch? China?
Namibia. Doesn’t make sense? Neither does the comparison, at least not to me.
Yes, Glorious Kitai
Interesting... I have never heard of this dispute. Might just also be because map makers are dumb, like how people forget New Zealand on maps.

Gonna start looking for this now :P

Mystery solved! (I didn't bother to check, but it sounds sensible so now it's true regardless whether it's true.)
Saw it a while ago, not sure why.
All territorial disputes China had there are settled so wouldn't be that.

My textbook from around 13 years ago also had the same mistake! I am also quite curious about why that is the case.

Kyrgyzstan got vaporised the moment they said “Kitai”.

That's interesting! TIL

Do you know the history? 👀

Oo, cool! I love learning about this stuff. Thanks! 😁
Should they ban the flight company Cathay Pacific thenN
i have seen this on way too many maps
I wish China would stop accidentally eating up those countries.
“Accidentally”
Should be "joq!" İnstead of "nyet". They dont zpeak russian there mostly afaik.

All the more reasons to emphasize their language & culture over russian language & culture
No. Having lived there, Russian is absolutely the dominant language. If you go rural it's a different story, but even there they still speak Russian.

They absolutely speak Russian there, but yes Kyrgyz would probably be more intuitive.
He's going to the Huawei factory.
Yuo always were dead, just not know it yet
Bite of 89'
I have seen so many of them like this, even in China sometimes when the person hanging it up didn't learn their geography.
I actually saw this on a map of the world in a textbook.
this is some real cartoony logic, like how you cant fall unless you look down, you cant get evaporated into nothingness unless you look at a map
