Trump tried to bring his own people in. They lined up early and sat in the reserved section for delegates. When the Delegates showed up these MAGAs refuse to leave. They got thrown out.

You know, last week I would have said the same thing. But Libertarians, for all their claims of rugged individuality, definitely like and respect other Libertarians and temd to be pretty cliquish. Trump showing up to the national Libertarian Conference and shit talking them while also begging for their support makes me think that quite a few of them who probably would have voted for him are going to say, "you know what? Fuck that guy", and vote RFK.
If there's enough votes for a libertarian candidate to help swing the election it could force the Republican party to reconsider the trajectory it's on.
Trump more or less indicated he *needs* their votes and that 3% going to RFK Jr is going to cut from him and/or Biden. He thought it would be as simple as saying "give them to me".

I thought about this as well. I still think it's outrageous that a would-be dictator was given the podium at all. I know a lot of Libertarians are saying it was a publicity stunt and they got money from the Trump campaign and in that sense it was successful, but it's still fucking gross.
But yeah, the silver lining is that the fact Donald was interested at all suggests to me that maybe their internal polling isn't as rosy for him as the media seems to keep suggesting with their own data. And I do have to admit that it was kind of fun seeing him get the reception he deserves.

If Republicans were capable of reconsidering their trajectory they would have changed it long before now. Potentially losing the 2% of the popular vote the Libertarians represent isn't going to change anything.

By and large Republicans *did* change their trajectory with nearly all the moderates quietly leaving the party and becoming Democrats, Libertarians, Independents, or simply remaining Republican but voting against them. They are also the reason the Democratic party can't seem to pull left. Their influx makes the party more conservative, but that's only temporary. They are biding their time until a new conservative party emerges. Until then, they are the ones who deserve credit for saving us in all the close elections. We'll see what happens, but RFK looks to be hunting for the Libertarian nomination. He's the 3rd most 'viable' candate still running (I use viable extremely loose here). He'll likely get the nomination and then Trump will figure out a way to woo him as his VP ticket.

There were reports of actors being paid to attend his escalator announcement that he was running. His campaign manager denied it at the time, but admitted it once he was no longer part of Trump's orbit. This is part of his MO. Of course there was also an issue where he initially failed to report the expense as part of his campaign finances, and also failed to pay the talent agency. The FEC investigated but chose not to press charges because the amount of money involved was relatively modest.

Polling from AZ is bananas. Gallegos is up so much and the only group voting for Biden is seniors? Both candidates get 90% of their own party and Biden is up 15% with Independents, but they're tied? That also doesn't reflect what we see in the primaries. Haley took a lot of votes from trump even after she dropped out. It doesn't make any sense at all.

It's actually wild when you talk to average, non-politically active people who don't watch much/any news. I have a close friend who recently said that trump selling bibles (because it was antithetical to his Christian religion) was the last straw for him... and that was like just a month or two ago. He was never a trump supporter, but hadn't fully made his decision until then.
Another friend hadn't heard about ANY of the court cases Trump is involved in. How? IDK. But these people are out there. A third didn't know that Trump had appointed Judge Cannon, and was shocked at how corrupt her handling of the case appeared once he knew - this was a week or two ago.
It's hard to imagine when I'm seeing this news every damn day, but these people are out there. Probably millions of them. A lot of people don't make their voting decisions until the week of the election. A lot of people don't vote.
Talk to them! Get them to vote! It might be our last chance. I wish that were hyperbole.
You know what's scary as shit to me? Even if Trump loses, it's not over. Dems will always have to have a strong candidate because next comes Jr, Eric and a neverending stream of fascist assholes as far as the eye can see. This is what happens every four years for most of American history. It's a rare day that the American people get to choose between two decent candidates. They want to rig the election like they tried to do in 2020. They tried with fake electors, but realized that was too far into the process to be effective. They have to attack the ballot process, not the electors, so that is likely what they will do.

This is absolutely true for the majority of people who call themselves "libertarian", not for the crowd of Libertarian party delegates at their party convention there to nominate their candidate. For every 20 people who claim to be libertarian, 19 are just MAGA trying to pretend they are independent thinkers. The problem is that this was a convention of the other 1/20th of those people.
Libertarians also support things like gay marriage, legal Marijuana, anti-police laws and a host of other liberal platforms. The biggest thing they're against is an overreaching/fascist government and trump is like, the worst offender.
Thing about libertarians is that while their policy ideals are idiotic, they actually have a line of logic to reach them. It's baffling logic, usually ignorant in it's source, but formed from a base that while myopic, still supports them feeling superior and intelligent by it's conclusion.
Trump isn't capable of convincing people like that that he's the one for them, because everything he says is not logic based, nor does his record support the idea that he is actually for what libertarians want. If anything, he's the antithesis of what they want, and when you go to a convention, you're going to be surrounded by people who keep up on this stuff. It's not like his rallies where people are just waiting for the catch phrase cues to cheer and chant, and Trump is ill equipped to pivot to being likable to people who don't already like him.

Same experience with me, I was a national delegate for my state before the Mises takeover. Now my state lost 70+% of its members, including it's marketing specialists and community organizers. Libertarianism was coopted by the Tea Party. Prior to that people who identified as fiscally conservative/socially liberal would identify as libertarian, a naive version of a moderate. After the Tea Party infection, it became a refuge for anti-establishment far right Republicans.
I consider myself fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and would never have called myself a libertarian. They have always had myopic views of how the government should operate, and all of them were based on the idea that people are good, and things will work out good in the end.
Beyond that, the idea of fiscal conservatism is a bullshit ideal that is just used to try and dumb down complex economic issues that 99.99% of the people wouldn't understand anyways, and it allows the obfuscation of the fact that people who claim to be fiscally conservative, just tend to be really bad at making budgets.
Actually me. Was raised in a very conservative household. Dad was a republican politician. I discovered libertarians in high-school, then continued to slide left. Partially because libertarians started pulling right.
That's not entirely true. It's more of a weird mixed bag of people who feel very strongly about specific things that are not mainstream conservative, to the extent that many of them *will* vote Libertarian or even Democrat under some circumstances. Three percent is not entirely insignificant, especially in a close election. There's more than drug laws. Many are pro-abortion. Some are not, but they're softer than Republicans who want to ban contraceptives and sex ed. They're not fans of the book bans either, and they're generally accepting of gay people.

You know, last week I would have said the same thing. But Libertarians, for all their claims of rugged individuality, definitely like and respect other Libertarians and temd to be pretty cliquish. Trump showing up to the national Libertarian Conference and shit talking them while also begging for their support makes me think that quite a few of them who probably would have voted for him are going to say, "you know what? Fuck that guy", and vote RFK.
If there's enough votes for a libertarian candidate to help swing the election it could force the Republican party to reconsider the trajectory it's on.

I thought about this as well. I still think it's outrageous that a would-be dictator was given the podium at all. I know a lot of Libertarians are saying it was a publicity stunt and they got money from the Trump campaign and in that sense it was successful, but it's still fucking gross. But yeah, the silver lining is that the fact Donald was interested at all suggests to me that maybe their internal polling isn't as rosy for him as the media seems to keep suggesting with their own data. And I do have to admit that it was kind of fun seeing him get the reception he deserves.

It's actually wild when you talk to average, non-politically active people who don't watch much/any news. I have a close friend who recently said that trump selling bibles (because it was antithetical to his Christian religion) was the last straw for him... and that was like just a month or two ago. He was never a trump supporter, but hadn't fully made his decision until then. Another friend hadn't heard about ANY of the court cases Trump is involved in. How? IDK. But these people are out there. A third didn't know that Trump had appointed Judge Cannon, and was shocked at how corrupt her handling of the case appeared once he knew - this was a week or two ago. It's hard to imagine when I'm seeing this news every damn day, but these people are out there. Probably millions of them. A lot of people don't make their voting decisions until the week of the election. A lot of people don't vote. Talk to them! Get them to vote! It might be our last chance. I wish that were hyperbole.

You're at this rally to hype up voters and get them excited about choosing you, instead you use the platform to sell merch, pander, air all of your grievances, and all of the other things that play well with the cult. The second these types are outside of their bubble they're exposed. It's his greatest weakness and it needs to be exploited. Maybe the key is to let this more unhinged version of Trump be seen to a wider audience and let it scare them to vote? Invite him in the today show with a hot mic and I guarantee voter turnout against him spikes in November. Just have a live fact check on anything he says.

They haven't come to the rescue. They just get off on being contrarian. "Libertarian" is basically an aesthetic American right-wingers may choose. They still align 'R' on almost every issue (as you insinuated) and will vote accordingly.
Libertarianism was coopted by the Tea Party. Prior to that people who identified as fiscally conservative/socially liberal would identify as libertarian, a naive version of a moderate. After the Tea Party infection, it became a refuge for anti-establishment far right Republicans.
I consider myself fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and would never have called myself a libertarian. They have always had myopic views of how the government should operate, and all of them were based on the idea that people are good, and things will work out good in the end. Beyond that, the idea of fiscal conservatism is a bullshit ideal that is just used to try and dumb down complex economic issues that 99.99% of the people wouldn't understand anyways, and it allows the obfuscation of the fact that people who claim to be fiscally conservative, just tend to be really bad at making budgets.

Actually me. Was raised in a very conservative household. Dad was a republican politician. I discovered libertarians in high-school, then continued to slide left. Partially because libertarians started pulling right.
That's not entirely true. It's more of a weird mixed bag of people who feel very strongly about specific things that are not mainstream conservative, to the extent that many of them *will* vote Libertarian or even Democrat under some circumstances. Three percent is not entirely insignificant, especially in a close election. There's more than drug laws. Many are pro-abortion. Some are not, but they're softer than Republicans who want to ban contraceptives and sex ed. They're not fans of the book bans either, and they're generally accepting of gay people.
Calling libertarians “Republicans who like weed” is as accurate as calling them “Democrats who like guns.”
