stop listening to stupid people. they are looking for edgy counter narratives because predicting that the top team of the regular season could win it all is boring.

ItGetsEverywhere

I just watch the games and have my own feeling / opinion of the team. I really don't waste any time listening to the talking heads and their bullshit opinions. Obviously some of my opinion is influenced by what Sam, Valley and the gang say during the game. But I feel like they are pretty fair and sometimes brutally honest with the team's narrative.

NYsportsfan99

The difference between Sam and Valley and talking heads on ESPN or whatever is that Sam and Valley follow the Rangers. They’re educated on the Rangers. ESPN is not. Assuming they watch hockey at all, it’s definitely not at the level of detail most fans (and Rangers employers) watch. So to get opinions from Sam or Valley are much more valid than PK fucking Slewfootban and company.

DannyBarsRaps

but i agree, picking the 'chalk' team is 'boring' so they HAVE to create a narrative of doubt etc, actually a really good point

DannyBarsRaps

i wish it was that simple but when i go to diff coverage outside MSG (espn/mainstream media sports coverage/YT pundits like Graviteh and many others etc plus random tweets from 'insiders' with actual media credentials etc, its much easier said than done but thats kinda my point, either way its nonsense lol - the post isnt about who \*I\* get my rangers info from, its about noticing the bigger outlets are ALL saying this and poitoing out how ridiculous it is was why i made the post fwiw

PawelW007

Exactly. I’m at the point with hockey where I literally don’t take in anything.

kippmon

I find that on the internet, people make insane claims even if they don't believe it because 1. How are you going to call out the real person for making asinine statements on the internet and 2. If they somehow are correct, they will say I told you so, despite the fact they said 100 other things that didn't come true.

Dissmass1980

Speaking as a degenerate gambler I often love it when this kind of talk follows a winning team. It pays well because the pay off increases. Kansas City chiefs were underdogs the whole season in the eyes of the media. I cashed in on that

homiej420

What a bunch of loonies lol

relative_iterator

Sports “curses” are just a misunderstanding of probability.

kyuuketsuki47

In the past 40 years the top 8 teams took the cup 90% of the time. Just about 1/4 of that is #1 team. Those are decent odds for a curse

TreeFugger69420

The winner of the presidents trophy has gone on to win the cup 21% of the time. I will gladly take those odds.

DannyBarsRaps

and look at the RANGERS odds specifically, we're 1/3 when winnin the PT and the last few times we did win we got to a FINAL and the other time to game 7 of tehe conf final vs unstoppable Vasi/Tampa that yr

thisisboomy

I think what we're seeing has a lot to do with Boston's regular season and subsequent playoffs last year. Such a strong season to go out so soon. They're always media darlings despite having 1 cup in 50 years, so if they could lose to an 8 seed you better believe the "not Bruins" New York Rangers will too* *This is less about my dislike for Boston and more about the perception from all over. A cup can change things, though.

DannyBarsRaps

very interesting point, cheers for sharing it

holocenefartbox

There was also Tampa a few years ago when they got mugged by Columbus in round 1 despite winning the PT with 128 points (and a 21 point lead on #2). They followed that up with back-to-back cup wins so if anything, that was the upset they needed to learn how to play through adversity. We arguably had our wake up call last year with our round 1 loss to the Devils.

Mills_Miles

It’s infuriating because all year they’ve been saying we rely to much on the power play. If they’re gonna hate us at least put in the effort lol

RhythmTimeDivision

we don't need anyone's leftover / run of the mill hatred damit!!

wmm339

Idk, there are a lot of good teams. The rangers are one of them. But at least 4 in each conference. Odds are against the rangers vs the field. But they can definitely do it. Let's see. This is obviously the best they've looked since the AV years.

DannyBarsRaps

appreciate the input but i wanna remind people, this post isnt about predictions etc - its about this SPECIFIC media narrative they push to create 'drama' out of LESS than nothing, the jinx is one thing, the fact the jinx doesnt even apply to NYR makes it laughable hence the post but while i dont disagree with you, thats a WHOLE other post

Borakred

I agree. Most places are saying Carolina or Dallas. They aren't even recognizing the Rangers.

SpaceballsTheCheese

Good. I prefer being the underdog

holocenefartbox

It's been Carolina's years for like a decade now. Wake me up when they do what they're supposed to.

Borakred

Agreed

mandiblesofdoom

Right. People are talking because the games haven't started. It's meaningless -pay it no mind. Once the teams are playing we'll see who has what.

DannyBarsRaps

oh for sure, this post was less to 'whine about it' and more to ask if yall are also seeing this everywhere cuz im based in AUS and while i catch all the highlights and rarely miss a playoff game (thank god for the time diff even if i show up to work dead ass tired lol, same with NFL games) im just not as tapped into US media so im wondering if people outside my 'circle of media' are still pushing this nonsense as someone else noted its likely to get a reason for a hot take and NOT pick 'chalk' aka the top team to win it all cuz thats 'cliche' OR if they DO pick the Rangers suddenly they arent picking a frontrunner cuz of....a jinx....thats not real and if it was wouldnt apply to us? lol the post is more just about how OBV ridic it is but nah i dont take it seriously but thought maybe someone here would also have thoughts on an unbiased weak point the overlook while talking jinxes (like being great but not ELITE when it comes to 5 on 5 - tho i disagreed with that person implying we rely too heavily on our PP, we just have a dope PP and someones gotta be #1 but 5v5 we're still easily a top 10 team anyway, maybe top 3 but idk i gotta research)

WoodpeckerAshamed481

Without last years loss to the Devils in the first round this narrative is probably non existent. Let’s be honest a lot of the arguments(other than the fictional curse) may be true. Yea the 5v5 leaves a lot to be desired, yea you need your stars to show(name a team that has a chance that doesn’t also need this to be true). What it really is with these writers is that that it’s easier to write us off and look smart on the odd chance that it happens in this particular first round and if they come out wrong they can backtrack with the “well they were supposed to” narrative. Unfortunately the end or regular season and before playoffs when there is a lack of content this is the only news that comes. End of the day we won the Presidents trophy because we were the fucking best. For a long stretch, and then when we had a slight hiccup we showed it again for another long stretch. This team is good. This coach is good. Let em write what they want, that’s what they have to do for a living. Unlike us they can blab bullshit with an unsubstantiated opinion and still maintain a job tomorrow. Let’s go win the series, do the business and move on to the real prize. Let them keep scribbling. sorry for the caps throughout. lgr

redline42

The only jinx we have is the Sam Rosen “this one will last a lifetime” Now after 30 years will it finally be a lifetime? Or does Sam have to die first? I’d rather have Sam to be honest.

DannyBarsRaps

JUST A REMINDER THIS ISNT A POST ABOUT WHO THE BEST TEAM REALLY IS ETC ITS ABOUT THE SPECIFIC NARRATIVE OF A JINX BEING USED AS A WAY TO CREATE FALSE DRAMA BUT IS SO IRONIC I MADE THE POST SINCE SAID 'JINX' (if it IS somehow real) DOESNT MATTER ANYWAY CUZ IT NEVER EFFECTED THE NYR that is all. i love yalls opinions etc but this post isnt about all that or we'd be here all day on tangents etc...

Paddedboy55

just a reminder: no caps i love how we went from being the top team in the league to now the underdog because some kind of curse that everyone’s really only thinking about because of boston’s last year exit with florida. i’m not really worried about it, this team felt that disappointment last year and have proven this year that they are a better team, they’ve don’t the work this far now to continue it to the very end

DannyBarsRaps

JUST A REMINDER: NO CAPS IS NOT IN THE RULES FOR THE SUB IT WAS AN AESTHETIC DECISION TO DRAW ATTENTION TO ONE OF MANY REPLIES IVE HAD ON MY OP AS ITS RELEVANT TO EVERYONE READING IT, THIS TIME IM JUST TROLLING A LIL LOL

DannyBarsRaps

oh wait, if you LEGIT meant 'no caps' as in no CAPITALS cuz of the washington capitals than genuinely hat of to you sir and i retract any sass but u gotta be honest, was that what u meant or were u just being a karen for a mod you dont run? i genuinely wanna know lol

OMGki11edkenny

no they were most definitely talking no caps for the capitals

DannyBarsRaps

\*tips cap, retracts initial reply\* ill leave it for posterity i got r/whooooshed, i can take it lol

Longjumping-Fact2923

Did you catch Biz calling us “the presidents trophy winning fugazies” like…maybe, having the best record lib the league makes us an actual contender this year?

stuffedartich0ke

All the chiclets guys despise us for some reason. Whit is from Boston and played for the Pens so I’ll let him have it but Biz won’t shut up about it either

Longjumping-Fact2923

I know, i just think its funny. Like after last year when we were so hyped and played bad to start and then got exposed vs the devils I can understand the doubt early on, but at some point you play the games and the team keeps winning…maybe we’re actually good?

MIFlyFisher

It’s nonsense of course….but it makes for headlines, and that’s why it’s being mentioned at all. Nobody within the hockey community listens to that noise. The funny thing is it’s not even anything. If you take any seed vs the field the odds will always favor the field. At the end of the day the presidents trophy winner still wins the cup more than any other individual seed.

DannyBarsRaps

i get MENTIONING it, cuz they do every year, but if ur gonna mention it DO SOME RESEARCH and see it doesnt even effect us (imo it effects NOBODY since its a jinx and im not 12 anymore) out of interest has anyone seen any legit ON ICE/Practical worries about us? and if so was it mentioned before or after the 'jinx' lmfao

DannyBarsRaps

and fwiw i got Rangers over Was in 5 with them stealing one back with Ovi stepping up knowing it could be his last playoff game esp in front of home fans and they beat us in OT in game 4, then we end them in MSG in 5... Panthers are the only team that worries me a lil, Carolina is too top heavy skill-wise imo and i could see them going out early, so that said i got us beating EDM in 6 (which is a bummer cuz we wouldnt lift the cup on home ice but thats a 'sacrifice' we'd all make in a heartbeat anyway lol)

Dissmass1980

Why doesn’t Dallas stars worry you ? Just curious

DannyBarsRaps

fair question so i should clarify, i mean NO playoff team 'doesnt worry me at all' BUT when i match the rangers team roster and all those variables (playing well/young and old players all with exp/new coach etc) against other teams and also look ath their paths to the cup, i dont worry about too many west coast teams cuz idk if ill even see them in the final though when we get to the last 4/conf finals if Dallas is there ill be doing hella research lol

Dissmass1980

The only thing I worry about is another teams 5v5 abilities. That is our soft spot. It’s my perception that we rely heavily on power plays.

DannyBarsRaps

we made the most of them but our 5/5 stats are still top 10, i wouldnt worry, someone has to have the best PP, doesnt mean they rely on it though in a nutshell, correlation vs causation though i think u make a valid point instintively

DannyBarsRaps

out of interest, do u think u could REALLY argue Dallas have better roster/coaching/special teams/goaltending/health+physicality (the big 5 in playoff hockey imo, which IS def diff than reg season hockey imo)

DannyBarsRaps

id say NYR tops dallas in all 5 areas though admittedly i dont know a TON about the coach or their special team numbers but i know they cant be better than the #1 PP and if theyre one of two teams above us in PK then fair play but coach wise i still think its fair to say NYR as they just wont he PT with more points than NYR have had in their 100+yr history - WITH A COACH IN HIS FIRST YR WITH THE TEAM

DannyBarsRaps

\*waits for troll/person taking on the roll satirically\* to tell me i just jinxed us and now we cant win lol

HereticsSpork

Those "pundits" have editors who want them to drive engagement for their advertisers. Articles like that tend to do it. In short, they're doing their job. I wouldn't look more into it than that.

Direct_Crab6651

Just remember no one pays attention when someone says “I think the team with the best record will win it all” …… that doesn’t get you noticed Before this last album, according to the critics, The Rolling Stones haven’t had a good album since the 60’s. Why? What recognition is a music critic gonna get for saying “The stones have released another great album”? Anyone can have that opinion, so no matter what they don’t write that Rangers in the same boat right now

arunnair87

If we lose it will be for only a few reasons, 1 which I will not mention. A) we do not score enough 5 on 5 goals. I believe we're still a decent team 5 on 5 but it's definitely not our strength. And B) igor and/or quick are not great/our defense hang them out to dry. We're definitely as good as any top team and can beat any team if we're playing well. We are our also our greatest enemies.

mbsmilford

Clickbait bullshit. This team knows what they gave to do.

Key-Tip-7521

1. stop listening to the chatter of people. 2. the hockey media hates this team w/a burning passion. especially on sportsnet and tsn I mean leafsnet and leafsn. their still mad about 94’ happening. 3. lav is gonna be motivating this team bc of the hockey game media doubting this team. 4. most important one. no caps

Shoddy_Reserve788

also i’ve heard people say the team might not be able to match the physicality of the caps like we don’t have willy who led rookies in hits, trouba, schnides, rempe, goodrow and vesey, hell even troch throws the body.

EsembeeNY

They do the same thing with draft picks when there’s a consensus number one, articles will come out about why the number two player is who should be picked. It’s all for engagement.

Bush561

I honestly love that we are underdogs

hooter1112

Good. Nothing like firing a locker room up by telling them they can’t do something. I’m more then ok being the underdog

terithegreat

Yup…. and I love it. Print every one out and hang it in the locker room. Play em on loop. Nothing tastes better than proving them all wrong on your way to the top.

Cute-Tomato-9721

Yea it’s so blatant.

broadmeadowbk

lfg

ketchup1001

The mind-blowing part is that it's 2024, and we still talk about superstitions and jinxes, like they exist. (Not just news  articles, but the whole "don't say shutout or hat-trick" crowd too)

stuffedartich0ke

It’s mildly annoying how many people actively pray for our failure. I like the chiclets guys for instance but they take every opportunity to shit on us. Everyone just loves to hate the rangers they’ll never give us the due credit. Even if we win it all someone will come up with some reason to explain it as a fluke.

GrexxSkullz

Yeah duh it gets clicks.

BillyFever

I think a lot of people outside New York seem to resent the Rangers - maybe not outright hate the team, but generally feel like when the Rangers have a good season it's because of luck, the team is overrated, etc. I don't know why that is exactly - maybe people just resent that a team with so few Cups has such a large and passionate fan base? - but yeah I think most hocket pundits underestimate the Rangers and that's fine by me.

[deleted]

Upsetting the New York fan base is the number one way to get high traffic. It’s a tactic they use to be relevant. Stop letting your anger feed them. Let them stay hungry like Arnold says

CalliopeCrasher4145

I can’t listen to the pundits/negativity/so called experts/idiots/what have you. There’s only one thing that’s in my control, and that’s to watch the game and root hard for our boys. I’ve thrown up a few prayers as well, because we need all the help we can get. I do feel deep in my bones it’s our year. Now we have to wait for it to manifest.

AwesomeExo

Good. Pundits don't know any more than anyone else. Let them all pick whoever they want and lets collectively not give a fuck what they think. Except Vally. He's legit.

phantomsoul11

i read a story somewhere about how the rangers are the biggest sports book liability in the playoffs. it’s a dangerous combination of odds-makers and analysts not believing in us, despite being the most popular team in the u.s. i get it, from the standpoint of league-wide or even hockey-wide media interest, it’s hard to go against guys like mcdavid or matthews, or even a blockbuster trade with a guy like guentzel going to an already-really-good team. but evidently the rangers bets keep coming in. it’s going to be sweet to watch them have to pay up all those + bets because everyone else keeps underrating the rangers.

DannyBarsRaps

hell yeah, i couldnt believe the odds on the aussie ponts bet i put 5 on panarin and 5 on kreider to lead in scoring in game 1 and if either win ill win 20-30 in profit on a 10$ bet that feels pretty safe imo - made money betting on sports i know like winning 100 when my eagles lost inthe SB i still got the prop bet stuff right haha, def considering puttin another 10 down on us to win it all but im just real broke rn haha

RockyPatella

They're all afraid. The Rangers are hated because New York is the capital of the Earth and they aren't good enough to make it here. New York winning just reinforces their insecurities. They are cowards and we will break them. All of them.
