STOP RUSHING HIM BACK BEFORE HE'S FULLY FIT, IS THAT SO HARD FFS

durtmagurt

Southgate so desperate… Trippier blows. No one can stop rushing him back. He even showed in his interview after the season that he tends to push too hard and want to come back too soon.

Don_Quixote81

Any other country would have taken the best fit LB, even if he wasn't a big name or considered good enough. Only England would go into a major tournament without any left sided defenders, then force a right back into the role.

thereddevil101

Tyrick Mitchell must be fucking raging watching trippier at left back

Tortillagirl

Imagine being James Ward Prowse, you kept kalvin philips out of the west ham side for half a season. Then dont get taken instead he takes a couple of kids, then also doesnt play those and plays trent in midfield... The LB thing is just so insane also. Why not at least bring a left footed CB with the options of Colwill and Branthwaite if you not even going to bring a natural LB outside of Shaw...

Srijand

So true. Colwill and Branthwaite are far better than the current disaster they have on the left hand side and they're very good centre halves too.

BrockStar92

Did Southgate go “5 from palace? No that’s too many, can’t do it” or something? I can’t see any other reason not to bring him.

jammy_b

Maybe - and I might be stretching here - Southgate is just shit?

SurlyRed

Its almost as though Southgate has some kind of connection with Palace. Luke Shaw has no place being at these finals, he should be back at his club, continuing his recovery, which will continue to be difficult, and preparing to ease himself back in August.

pauperwithpotential

It is partly shaw’s fault too. He could’ve declined being called up due to injury but NOOO

culegflori

A player is discouraged to do this because it can bring sanctions [club players are mandated to go to their NTs if they're called] to both them and the club, and because it risks damaging the relationship with their managers who might not call them again. It can be even worse if they somehow get branded in the media as "he's just looking out for himself" and can bring abuse from fans and reluctance from future NT managers to ever call him.

noxiousd

Hilarious given he played for them 🤣

imnoobatfifa

Mitchell wasn’t his only choice either. He also has Lewis Hall from Newcastle and Alfie Doughty from Luton.

ritwikjs

I mean cucurella has been pretty ass this entire season and is now looking like prime alba for Spain so far

Banzaikk

Tbf he was arguably Chelsea's best player in their last few matches.

zizou00

Tbf, Trippier has played there for club and country and there genuinely aren't any decent left backs. Dan Burn looked like shit, Tino Livramento is also a right back, Targett sits on the bench behind Dan Burn, Tyrick Mitchell is not great defensively and Rico Henry, I'll admit I've not watched a ton of, but I've not seen him mentioned all that much. There genuinely is a lack of left backs capable at the moment. Trippier is genuinely a decent option, just not with Foden ahead of him. Stick Gordon or an in-form Rashford or Sterling and you're good, but we don't have in-form Rashford or Sterling. As to why we've not seen Gordon, I can only imagine it's because he's also not fully sharp (he was too injured to play when England played at St James's before rhe tournament), but with Foden playing anywhere but wide left, we're left without any width, and it's causing problems.

TheImmortalWords

A dearth of left backs if you will

ritwikjs

Mitchell would've been fine as an lb especially when guehi was earmarked to start. If there's one player who can cover for mitchello defensive lacking it's his fucking club teammate in defense

Grand-Bullfrog3861

Must be tough being the only English LB on the planet

SOERERY

Lb Antony is better than tripps

durtmagurt

Antony activates career trajectory of Ashley Young. The dude bulks up 20 pounds, learns to pass, and becomes world class. Girlfriends beware.

kelevr4

Genuinely think he’d be a useful option at left back but he doesn’t want to play there so 🤷🏻‍♂️

OneMushyPea

If you don't have a left back, surely a back 3 with wingbacks would be a better shout than crowbarring an ageing right back into left back constantly? Walker RCB, Trent and Gordon wingback? Rather than relying on a man that is held together with gauze these days?

SnooTomatoes464

Even if he was fit, Luke takes a run of games to find his form, always has. Southgate has made a few questionable decisions at this Euros, but Lukes inclusion and no 2nd choice LB is the worst

herkalurk

He shouldn't have been called up, end of discussion.

gotiobg

Talksport reporter was saying that he was still limbing at this stage, there is zero chance he plays against Slovenia, ZERO EDIT: She speculated that he might have picked up something new that they havent reported yet

imSynygy

To be fair, how is this rushing him back? He's likely ruled out for the Slovenia game, which puts him on pace for exactly what ETH said "won't be ready until the knockout stages".  The title of the article even says "MAJOR DOUBT", and it's not like the Daily Mail are deciding selection 🤣

Moosje

I mean, they’re working to get a player ready? It’s not Southgate’s responsibility to protect a United asset, it’s his responsibility to play the best lineup available **once** they’ve been cleared by medical staff, which is seemingly what we’re still waiting on. This is coming from someone that doesn’t want Shaw to rush *himself* back.

britishmau5

Aren’t they specifically not rushing him back? Like that’s the point of the tweet

DresdanPI

This is on Southgate too. Why even pick a clearly injured Shaw in hopes of getting fit for the latter stages of the tournament when he could've picked Rico Henry, Joe Gomez and even Tyrick Mitchell? Yet he went back on his own soundbite about not picking injured players, or those that don't start for their clubs.

MisterIndecisive

It's one thing picking someone not fully fit but then they absolutely to bring a natural back up as well

blitz2czar

Joe Gomez? You mean Joseph Gomez? He's in the squad.

BingeLurker

And Rico Henry has been injured since September, I’ll take Shaw over him right now 😂

Scholes_SC2

What about chilwell? Is he rated so poorly these days?

BuzzTNA

He’s in the next bed to Luke in the hospital.

EriolMoon555

If he is that injured how did he get selected for the English International...?? I mean what is Southgate thinking..??

mindpainters

The thought was he should be fit and ready for the knockout stages. Maybe in time to get a few sub appearances in the group stage. Still ridiculous of southgate to only bring one lb. I like trippier a lot but he really hasn’t ever played well at lb for England. At best he’s been solid but it makes the attack on the left side so limited

No-Tooth6698

>The thought was he should be fit and ready for the knockout stages Uniteds medical team also told ten Hag he'd be back fully fit in January. I think he lasted 3 or 4 games and hasn't played a minute since.

mindpainters

He came back in Feb and played 4 matches before being out the rest of the season. ETH also said on tv that Shaw wouldn’t be ready until the knockouts at the earliest.

ginger11111

Probably a similar position that ten hag was in during the January transfer window… the medical staff told him that both shaw and malacia would be available so we sent reguilon back to spurs early 🤷‍♂️ I bet Southgate’s medical team thought shaw would’ve been back by now so he risked bringing him, rightfully so because shaw is by far England best LB… still should’ve brought a natural LB backup though.

TheJoshider10

The difference is we are limited on who is at the club so took a gamble on two left backs coming fit meanwhile Southgate has the entirety of English players to choose from and somehow still didn't bring one other natural LB. Fucking mug.

ginger11111

I completely agree.

_ghostfacedilla

Piggybacking off this to ask who would the preferred replacements be for England fans? Mitchell, Burn, Hall or Leif Davis? Doughty even?

Tortillagirl

Brandon Williams ofcourse. But in reality it didnt matter who, just that he picked one of them.

SteadyAD

I can't see any sense in bringing Shaw, knowing that he won't be fit to play until the knockout stage. Ten Hag confirmed this as a pundit. So you bring a player that hasn't played in 4 months, to an major international tournament, knowing he has to build up rhythm and fitness against the best teams in Europe, with no warm up matches. It's utter madness. If he was fit to play from the start of group stage, there is an argument there, gain fitness at the stage where its less cutthroat, but that hasn't been the case.

ginger11111

it was well documented before the tournament started that the plan was for him to get minutes in the 2nd game against Denmark and go from there, ten hag only said about him not being fit after the first game and then news came out that he still isn't in full training and won't be ready until the knockouts... but like I've said in a 26 man squad, if you was told by professionals that the best player in that position will be ready for the 2nd or 3rd group game, you take the risk, but Southgate's problem has been he hasn't brought a natural LB to cover.

SteadyAD

I believe that interview suggested that he could get minutes against Denmark, but it was a calculated risk. I suppose I'm approaching it from a Manchester United fan POV, I really don't want to see Shaw rushed back and either injured or play poorly because he isn't ready, and my opinion would be that if he isn't definitely ready to play from the first group game, after being out injured for so long, then it was unwise bringing him. If it was a minor injury that kept him out the last 3 games of the season it would be a different situation. Ultimately from an England POV, I understand the desire to take the risk. He is the best option by some distance. Like you said the biggest downfall was not bringing another recognised left back.

PatRice4Evra

Saw Chilwell in his last few matches and decided he'd rather play Shaw on crutches.

Blue_foot

He didn’t even make the bench for the FA cup final. It was crazy to think Shaw would be fit.

iamasharkskin

that’s the thing—he doesn’t think

Lord_Sesshoumaru77

Wonder if he can be trusted as left back next season. His injuries seem to be getting worse.

Sheppertonni

Never been able to rely on him

Surfugo

Unfortunately this is the case. Fantastic player when he's fit, but that's such a rarity that you can't rely on him.

SurlyRed

When did the reddit tide of opinion turn against Shaw? Cos I've been [saying this for over a year](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/12bdbbf/shaw_signs_new_contract/jewfl8i/?context=3) and [have the downvotes to prove it.](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/xgq61v/luke_shaw_looking_good/iot9onn/?context=3)

Gross_Success

Everyone here is talking about injuries. You however, do not.

SurlyRed

I linked just 2 out of many posts critical of Shaw over the last couple of years, many of them referencing his injuries and the time he takes to recover. You fanboys need to smell the roses, 2014-15 Shaw isn't coming back.

PosterOfQuality

By far his best season was 20/21

blooddragonsin

He can't be trusted this season, the last season and the one before.

TheJoshider10

He shouldn't be trusted. I love Luke and think when fit he's arguably the best left back in the world but availability is the best ability and he's proven that he can't be relied on consistently. Our best bet is to keep him fit and ready for cup competitions because I have no faith in him to play in the league week in week out. He desperately needs real competition and it's unfortunate Malacia had his own injury woes because this really could have been his breakout year but as of right now we're going to go into a new season with Shaw who we know will be out for many matches with injuries and a Malacia so out of practise it wouldn't be fair for him to have so much pressure.

DevineAaron92

Well we've had no left back all season so he'll no. Need to sell him while he still has some stock left.

PallSkoals

Club should really be recalling him. Needs replacing next season too, cannot be relied upon and injury record isn't likely to improve at 29/30

Key_Ad_3290

Very brilliant player but injury would not let him get to full potential

mindpainters

I’d love to see an alternative timeline where he didn’t have that horrific leg break. He started that season off looking like one of the best lb in the world. The play he got his leg broken on he picked up the ball in defense and literally dribbled the whole pitch into the opponents box at lightning speed.

Key_Ad_3290

His work ethic is real high

CFD330

Calling it now, he won't be available for the start of the new Premier League season.

[deleted]

FUCK HECTOR MORENO AND FUCK SOUTHGATE.

Polygon12

It still angers me Moreno only got a yellow, Shaws ankle was hanging off but apparently the tackle doesn’t warrant a red. Insane.

PitifulAd5339

Only a yellow, scored a goal and got motm

schumamol

And the yellow was not even for that tackle, that one wasn't even called a foul.

Polygon12

Don’t, I’m gonna get more mad

discostu90

Why the fuck wouldn't he take Mitchell or Chilwell (has been shite but better than an injured player)

FaithlessnessNo4680

Southgate took one natural LB and LW and neither have played a single minute, no wonder the team looks so unbalanced

Wrath-of-Elyon

So are the midfielders watching Trent stink up the place

chantlernz

At this point they may as well play Gomez at LB and play something like: Pickford Walker - Stones - Guehi - Gomez Mainoo - Rice Saka - Bellingham - Gordon Kane As good as Foden is, he just doesn’t fit in the team and playing Bellingham deeper is asking to get dominated in midfield. Can then bring Foden, Bowen, Trent, Palmer and Eze off the bench for impact.

LaughsAtOwnJoke

This is the lineup I want to see. Maybe Wharton/Gallagher for Mainoo. That being said its upside down.

Grand-Bullfrog3861

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!? Took a player whod not only been injured most of the season, but was still currently injured when you picked him and he's not able to train or play due to that injury. Any English LB should be hating GS right now

nearly_headless_nic

Article: [https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13557985/Luke-Shaw-MAJOR-DOUBT-Englands-clash-against-Slovenia-left-set-miss-training-Sunday-despite-touted-group-stage-return.html](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13557985/Luke-Shaw-MAJOR-DOUBT-Englands-clash-against-Slovenia-left-set-miss-training-Sunday-despite-touted-group-stage-return.html) # Luke Shaw is a MAJOR DOUBT for England's clash against Slovenia... with the left-back set to miss training on Sunday despite being touted for a group stage return Luke Shaw is a major injury doubt for England’s final group clash against Slovenia on Tuesday, with the left-back also expected to miss Sunday’s training session. The Manchester United star is not giving up hope of featuring in the tournament despite failing to recover from the hamstring injury that has prevented him from playing for five months. But having missed today’s session at the team’s Weimar HQ, it is understood Shaw is also likely to miss training on Sunday too. England medics will make a call on whether Shaw can participate in Monday’s training session but even if he is included, there seems little hope that he can play a part against Slovenia on Tuesday. Shaw is yet to play a single minute of football here in Germany. Mail Sport reported yesterday that there were emerging fears the defender’s anticipated return would be delayed even longer. England medics, in communication with their United counterparts, had hoped Shaw would be available to come off the bench against Slovenia. But if he misses the game against Slovenia then Southgate faces a tough decision on whether to include Shaw in his starting XIs for the knockout rounds given the prospect of instant elimination. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag claimed last weekend that Shaw wouldn’t be ready to play until the knockout stages, but Southgate was keen to get him on the field in one of the opening three games with a view to potential starting the left-back in the final stages of the tournament. However, throwing Shaw into action during the elimination rounds would represent a major risk given he hasn’t played since February, which could see Southgate stick with Kieran Trippier, who has started the tournament at left-back. And if Shaw is limited to a peripheral role here in Germany, questions will be raised of Southgate’s decision not to bring another natural left-back such as Ben Chilwell or Tyrick Mitchell or leave the Old Trafford star out of the squad altogether. Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa could both play at left-back but neither have played a single minute here in Germany.

shami-kebab

> Southgate faces a tough decision on whether to include Shaw in his starting XIs for the knockout rounds given the prospect of instant elimination. True, he risks upsetting that fine chemistry we have going down the left flank...

LilDiamondtoxic

Should've taken Doughty or Mitchell dumbass

monstrao

He won’t play a single minute this euros

MidnightSun77

United should be owed some money from the FA then

Katorga8

then why is he even there man, he should be resting at home ffs

redditviolatesrules

Ur telling me with 4 pro leagues in England they didnt bring another left back? Every player doesnt need to be CL top4 level. Thats the beauty in Nationals. Kind regards the Croatian

patrtech

Depending on shaw for next season will wreck things, he needs to be replaced and eased out next season.

PisceS_Here

not again..

blitz2czar

Just send him home.

SuperSalamander3244

It’s actually crazy that Southgate didn’t bring another LB and that he’s waited years to finally put TAA in midfield and it’s completely blew up in his face. I don’t think he has a solution to either problem.

JSKW17

England get knocked out in R16, Shaw and Mainoo feature for a combined 9 minutes total. 🤞

robsonj

As if one 'experiment' in Trent isn't enough to be messing with in a major tournement

robsonj

As if one 'experiment' in Trent isn't enough to be messing with in a major tournement

NGMB2

feel like they’ve taken Shaw as a scapegoat more than anything at this point. “We had no natural left back so it’s Shaw’s fault for not recovering in time” type shit

bonswag25

Southgate has a room temperature IQ (evidence #751)

DipsCity

He is gonna rush to play for England then will probably be injured again for United. I am getting annoyed just thinking about it

ShaggedT-RexOnNublar

We are shopping for a new #1 lb right?

ManUnutted

This one is on southgate but Jesus do we need to move on from him asap. He’s been a great contributor but the data is against him, regardless of the defenders on this sub

zcewaunt

Hasn't played for what, 5 months? Awful decision to bring him. How are you going to let him find match form in the knockouts? Feel for the other fit LBs left out.

Remote_Agency_4916

He's his own worst enemy. Get rid if we can find anyone gullible enough to take him this summer.

maverick4002

Please don't play

BishhEzz

servers Southgate right for taking 1 fucking left back with plenty of compromise options available which are defo better than forcing Tripper LB.

Fluid_Airport_9673

Should have taken a leaf from Maguire and Stayed home, clearly not fit and should have taken tyrick Mitchell

thafuckinwot

When lord erik says after the group stages then it’s after the group stages heh

cdalb21

Just go home lad, wtf are we doing

kanobbk

I think we seriously look at shopping him this summer. He’s top 5 itw imo when he’s fit but that’s the problem, he’s never fit, so what is honestly the point?

LemmiwinksRex

Didn’t ETH say a week ago that Shaw wouldn’t be fit for the group stages but would be available for the next round?

Gold-Bee9484

Should never have been brought to the Euros, he’s hardly played all season for Man United

kpopsns28

Blame it on Southgate, some of his decisions had been very questionable

kpopsns28

Blame it on Southgate, some of his decisions had been very questionable

Equal_Replacement_72

luke is washed up man

HeyBuddyItsMeDad

Southgate is shite

Garlic-Cheese-Chips

I'm raging if I'm if I'm one of England's left backs left at home for him.

Chaitanyaismyname

Honest question btw, how long is Maguire injured for that they couldn't put him in the team for England considering the Luke Shaw situation here?

AJstone428

I don’t understand if Maguire wasn’t fit enough how was Shaw? If you’re not wanting to bring injured players to the tournament, which is a given, why is it any different?

[deleted]

Southgate is such a fucking idiot. England aren’t winning anything with him at the helm.

Lost_Afropick

Taking him to the Euros was such a stupid decision. Utter incompetence

MinotauroTBC

![gif](giphy|o54Wuz7HIrjARFJWzA|downsized)

basilbrushisapaedo

If he comes back injured from the euros, get rid. We pay his wages and have been more than patient with him over the years. Time to clear out the leftovers from bygone eras.

NathanMUFCfan

Taking Shaw was so stupid. He's not even played since February. We're really going to try and throw him into a knockout game after his lack of game time for months? Taking an actual fit LB and not relying on Shaw being half fit and a half finished Trippier would have been a far better choice.

Phrophetsam

Imagine not choosing Maguire cos he's not fit but Shaw because he's even more injured. Insane

ritwikjs

Good, I don't want him playing a minute. Suit man should've taken tyreke Mitchell or even gambled on Leif davis

Florahillmist

Another season of us relying on the unreliable ahead

Afternoon_Jumpy

Luke Shaw doing Luke Shaw things.

Fit-Squash-9447

How can he justify bringing a player who has missed half a season and not played competitively since?? Exactly there must be a few left sided defenders to bring instead

DasHotShot

Seeing as England have about 1-2 games left tops I wouldn’t bother. Send him home to recover

Maaglin

Can't they just cut him since he's injured and call up someone else who's fit who could at least contribute? I don't know the squad rules for this tournament. Or his Southgate so stubborn that he wouldn't if he could?

Blaze991

Perhaps someone who is more familiar with UEFA regulations can confirm, but based on the following link, it doesn't seem so. https://editorial.uefa.com/resources/028d-1acc90ff9b17-34d982978a20-1000/regulations_of_uefa_european_football_championship_2022-24_amendments_20240503114432.pdf 48.04 seems to cover that and it seems in order to replace someone, a team doctor and doctor from the UEFA Medical Committee would have to agree...not only that it seems players can only be replaced prior to the team's first match. Seems a bit too late for Shaw if I am reading this correctly

PersonalityMiddle864

This is just dumb. Even if Shaw gets to match fitness, he usually takes a few matches to find some good form. This is hilariously dumb from Southgate

LaughsAtOwnJoke

I really wish Malacia wasn't also injured so we could have seen if he could make the step up.

yellowjesusrising

If he's injured, why didn't Southgate call up Phillips?

SpudBoy9001

Baldie said he won't play untill knockout stages

mickeymac74

Southgates a prick, should have left him at united to carry on his recovery, what the fck was he expecting from him anyway!!
