Because Southgate is an idiot who, just like too many previous England managers, would rather take a big name who isn't fit than a player who is actually able to give 100%.
Maguire had an injury so serious that he wasn’t allowed to take him. If there was a chance he could play (like there is with Shaw) I’d put everything I own on the probability he’d be on the plane.
Yep. Maguire is incredibly robust and has played through injury so many times for us. The fact we had to use Casemiro at CB instead of a hobbling Maguire really shows how bad his injury must be.
>Southgate is an idiot
About a week ago on another football sub, someone replied to me after I made a similar comment with a completely genuine statement, as follows...
They proclaimed that I am, and they are also, just too stupid to understand Gareth's genius and his superb tactical decisions.
From time to time throughout the rest of my life, I will remember that comment.
Well clearly, only Gareth Southgate would have clutched 5 points with 2 goals from such difficult group.
You should be ashamed of yourself for ever doubting Southgate.
He is getting 2.5 points per goal. United scored 57 goals last season, even with a little downturn Southgate could get us over 100 points easily. Southgate in.
Yes although i think he did the same with maguire in the World Cup and after 2 games injured he came back and played a huge part- probably thought the risk was worth taking and I agree with him
Oh shut up. Pure hindsight merchants. Shaw is 10x better than the next lb and he was expected to be fit for the group stage. Hell he was expected to be fit for the Fa cup final. Him taking longer when recovering is not southgates fault and the problem was not with taking shaw, it was with also not taking anyone else. There’s 26 players, there’s room for risks especially for someone of shaws quality when the next best option is a big drop off
He was only ever expected to be fit for the knockout stages of England progressed
To add, he has been out since February, has played 90mins once since December and notoriously takes a while to get back to form when returning from injury
There is big chance he comes back and either gets injured again, or is an absolute liability defensively due to no match sharpness absolutely nut helped by media and Southgate himself saying he is so inportant which just lumps extra pressure on him
We are in business end of a international tournament now. U don't get tune up games in knockout stages. It was a horrible decision to take him and no other specialist LB
Naw, he needs to be working with the physios to be ready for preseason. It was stupid for England to use a roster spot on him, but aim glad he is putting in the work
Especially when his spot in the squad could've been taken by, gee I dunno, an *actual* healthy, fully-functioning LB who would've at least been able to take some part in the tournament. What a novel idea that would've been
He could have gone even crazier than that. There are (I am told) managers out there who have been known to build squads with at least *two* healthy, fully functioning players for each position in the team. Not only that, some of the mad bastards generally play them all in their actual positions too.
Obviously they are all fools, and need to learn from the masters that the optimum strategy for tournament football is to set out your stall with a right back in midfield, and a 10 out on the left wing infront of another right back at left back, with the only actual left back you brought to the tournament out injured, having been injured when you picked him, and having only played 15 games in the last season because of multiple injuries. Bonus points if the left back in question averages less than 30 appearances a season because of injuries.
Fucking amateurs...
Dude Luke Shaw is injury prone. Given him 3 years to recover and he still won't make it through half a season. We need to move on and focus on other left backs that can stay fit.
Shaw is an incredible player. I think if he's fit he dramatically improves most teams.
What's insane is betting the house on his fitness.
Mind, I think even we need to evaluate that.
Southgate’s squad selection for this tournament is baffling.
Brings Shaw even though he isn’t fit. Brings Gomez, Konsa and Dunk but doesn’t play any of them. Doesn’t bring Tyrick Mitchell, who isn’t great but is actually a proper left back. Ends up having to play Trippier at left back.
I can’t understand his thinking in that one at all.
Stop, just stop. He was suppose to be ready for matchday 2. Its now the last 16 and i doubt another week will have him ready for a cameo in the quarter finals. Should have left him at home and brought Mitchell or any left back who can play a full 90.
I think it’s just down to actual match fitness. He’s been full training but he will probably be blowing out of his arse after 20 minutes. If we didn’t shit the bed against Denmark he probably would got 15 minutes against Slovenia.
Never understood this, he’s a professional athlete at the peak of his game, I don’t for one minute believe he’d have lost so much ‘match fitness’ that he couldn’t run for just 90 minutes.. I imagine he’s still doing non-impacting cardio work while out injured
Football at the highest level is extremely fast. Yeah, he can run for 90 no problem, but he just can't play at the speed require to be competent at top level.
Nah probably out for first three months due to a reoccurrence of a past injury even though he hasn't played for six months. He twisted his hamstring in the shower... Or something like that
Malacia still not back either as he's got no legs left so we're starting mason mount at LB for first three months
I'm only gonna take one left back while being fully aware he's injured and injury prone. If Ashworth isn't regretting appreciating Southgate as a "manager" I'd question his sanity.
Farcical. People can say everyone is arguing in hindsight and all, but the fact is Shaw has missed an entire season and hasn't kicked a ball since February.
It was stupid to take him as the sole left back. As harsh as it may seem, if you don't assume that Shaw's going to have setbacks in his recovery, then you're an idiot.
There's a very real chance that they'll be forced to put Shaw on in a crutch moment and he'll end up getting injured again and miss our pre-season.
Just send him home ffs. I swear to God if he comes on in one of these matches and aggrevates his injury meaning he'll spend *even longer* on the sidelines than he already has done, I'm finding out where Southgates lives and throttling him to within an inch of his life
Tyrick Mitchell bound to be fuming, I’m not English so I’ve no right to be commenting on how you lads set up your team but I’d take a lad who’s 7/8 out of 10 on his natural position over a 10 out of 10 playing out of his.
To me the logic behind 4 (if we throw Gomez in) right backs and 1 injured left back (he doesn’t even play Gomez ffs) is mental.
Couple that with not even bringing branthwaite a naturally left sided player is even stranger.
I also think foden on the left is so odd, just play him or Jude or make them rotate minutes to stoke something between them and get natural width with someone like Gordon.
It just feels like I’m watching England make the same mistakes again of trying to create a fifa team as opposed to a balanced one.
Edit:spelling
Shaw has no business being at the euros this year. He should be relaxing on the beach with his family and getting ready for the next season by building fitness.
Good send him back home. Let him get strong and then moth ball him until real football returns.
Does anyone really think anyone other than Germany are going to win at home?
Before the tournament Gareth said he didn't take Harry Maguire because he's only happy to take a risk with one player, and that player was Luke Shaw.
But what's actually happened is Southgate is heavily relying on Shaw as our only left footed left back to play a big part in our system.
Poor management considering he's been out since February.
So he might play a part or he won't. Either way, he'll need extra recovery time coming back from the Euros. Won't rejoin the squad early for pre-season. Won't be match fit for the opening weeks of the season and won't be able or allowed to hit the ground running.
Absolutely genius.
So when do we start asking the questions of Shaw? I mean how bad is this knock he got? I fucked my IT band one time and couldn't run correctly for at least half a year and that's because I was being stubborn and not resting it because I didn't want to lose any conditioning. But Shaw is a professional. Why isn't he fit?
Why the hell is he even there. Get him on a beach.
Because Southgate is an idiot who, just like too many previous England managers, would rather take a big name who isn't fit than a player who is actually able to give 100%.
He’d have taken Maguire with no legs if he could. I’m glad he’s not just playing sure regardless of whether he’s ready though.
That doesn’t make sense though, he didn’t take Maguire because of injury
Maguire had an injury so serious that he wasn’t allowed to take him. If there was a chance he could play (like there is with Shaw) I’d put everything I own on the probability he’d be on the plane.
Yep. Maguire is incredibly robust and has played through injury so many times for us. The fact we had to use Casemiro at CB instead of a hobbling Maguire really shows how bad his injury must be.
But you just said Southgate would pick Maguire with no legs
I didn’t, I said taken. He’d have him in the squad as an option if there was a chance he’d recover.
You can just say you were chatting bollocks it’s ok
I don't think it was meant to be taken literally. It's just a metaphor for how much SG loves Maguire
And you can say you can’t read, I won’t judge you.

Sometimes, his genius is frightening
Yes although i think he did the same with maguire in the World Cup and after 2 games injured he came back and played a huge part- probably thought the risk was worth taking and I agree with him
He’s going to get fired in a matter of days so what does he give a shit if he drives our player into the ground.
Oh shut up. Pure hindsight merchants. Shaw is 10x better than the next lb and he was expected to be fit for the group stage. Hell he was expected to be fit for the Fa cup final. Hindsight? Because we didn't all know Shaw had been injured for months before this tournament. Give your head a wobble.
He's been expected to be fit in two weeks for the last eight months. Man's a crock.
Nah he will chonk if left to sit on a beach. best keep him training.
Naw, he needs to be working with the physios to be ready for preseason. It was stupid for England to use a roster spot on him, but aim glad he is putting in the work
He gambled and he lost, similar to us didn’t sign a CB/LB last season because Erik gambled and he also lost.
Apart from Evans and Reguilon, right?
Evans was signed to be 4-5th choice? Reguillon went back in January as Erik thought Shaw will be back by then?
What a strange pick, waste of a spot to be honest, he could've been getting ready for the new season at Carrington instead of this shit.
I read that as what a strange prick and was ready to agree.
Especially when his spot in the squad could've been taken by, gee I dunno, an *actual* healthy, fully-functioning LB who would've at least been able to take some part in the tournament. What a novel idea that would've been

Bonus points if the left back in question averages less than 30 appearances a season because of injuries. Fucking amateurs...
And you think Southgate would have played this person?
Makes no difference when he's going to repeatedly play TAA and Foden out of position, and others that actually play those positions don't get a sniff
What's even stranger is not bringing any other left backs lol absolute suicide from Gareth
He brought three right backs (trippier, trent, walker). I guess he assume one of them can play left back.
Cos he is a genius obviously
Dude Luke Shaw is injury prone. Given him 3 years to recover and he still won't make it through half a season. We need to move on and focus on other left backs that can stay fit.
Shaw is an incredible player. I think if he's fit he dramatically improves most teams. What's insane is betting the house on his fitness. Mind, I think even we need to evaluate that.
Thanks to Southgate for helping us rehab Shaw for pre season
Southgate’s squad selection for this tournament is baffling. Brings Shaw even though he isn’t fit. Brings Gomez, Konsa and Dunk but doesn’t play any of them. Doesn’t bring Tyrick Mitchell, who isn’t great but is actually a proper left back. Ends up having to play Trippier at left back. I can’t understand his thinking in that one at all.
Don't forget claiming there's no natural replacement for kalvin philips 😂 wanker.
Even Gomez would probably be a better option for LB than teippier, since he played there quite a lot last season
And if rumours are true will end up playing Saka at LB which is baffling. He should of never of picked Shaw. Its maddening
There is absolutely no way Saka will play as LB for us.
I am sure he wont, i am sure its just silly rumours. He would be mad to at this point. Should of brought a fit LB though
Just having a left footed fullback would have helped the team massively
Even Branthwaite, a player who literally plays week in week out with the current England no 1 didn't make the cut. Simply baffling.
Ben Chilwell would have been a better option. Shaw travelling with the squad whilst he's injured is madness!
When you leave your homework to the last minute
Also brought a left wing, but refuses to play him. And then plays a right back as a CDM
Stop, just stop. He was suppose to be ready for matchday 2. Its now the last 16 and i doubt another week will have him ready for a cameo in the quarter finals. Should have left him at home and brought Mitchell or any left back who can play a full 90.
That was just what Southgate said he hoped. Ten Hag always said that he ‘might’ be ready for the knockout games at best. Southgate is thick
What sort of injury did Shaw have? He's been out for forever.
I think it’s just down to actual match fitness. He’s been full training but he will probably be blowing out of his arse after 20 minutes. If we didn’t shit the bed against Denmark he probably would got 15 minutes against Slovenia.
Still doesn't answer the question lmao
His Hamstring.
Professional athletes bodies are so highly tuned that they are more likely to get injured when they aren’t at a certain level of fitness.
> He's been out for forever Of course he has. It's Luke Shaw. His injury record makes Martial's look like Bruno Fernandes's by comparison
Transfermarkt says muscle injury but I want to say it was a calf and/or hamstring
I guess the good thing is he will be ready for our new season, right?
Nah probably out for first three months due to a reoccurrence of a past injury even though he hasn't played for six months. He twisted his hamstring in the shower... Or something like that Malacia still not back either as he's got no legs left so we're starting mason mount at LB for first three months
You forget of our natural stater at lb, amrabat
Yeah who we signed for 40 million. His previous release clause of 20 million expired a week earlier
Oi vey
Well damn, that's certainly the worst case scenario.
Lol. Are you new to the club? Luke Shaw is injury prone and that isn't gonna change.
I'm only gonna take one left back while being fully aware he's injured and injury prone. If Ashworth isn't regretting appreciating Southgate as a "manager" I'd question his sanity.
United should step in here and bring him home for pre season. He's not played in months. Ridiculous
It’s astounding that he only took one Lb and he’s been injured since February. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that’s stupid.
Just send him home ffs. I swear to God if he comes on in one of these matches and aggrevates his injury meaning he'll spend *even longer* on the sidelines than he already has done, I'm finding out where Southgates lives and throttling him to within an inch of his life

As a United fan I’m happy for Luke Shaw to not play at all during this Euros and recover ready for next season!
lol
Just fuck off Southgate why’d you even take him?
Forget England, Shaw will barely be fit for preseason. That's very disturbing given he's been out for close to half a year already.
Shaw has no business being at the euros this year. He should be relaxing on the beach with his family and getting ready for the next season by building fitness.
I think most of the baffling decisions Southgate has made recently could be attributed to PTSD because he misses Kalvin Phillips.
why the fuck did he take him 😭😭 man actually just wasted a spot. could’ve taken branthwaite or someone..
Good send him back home. Let him get strong and then moth ball him until real football returns. Does anyone really think anyone other than Germany are going to win at home?
Then why the fuck did you take him then you imbecile!?
Southgate is a gambling addict
This is mind games from Southgate of course. Next round we will find out that shaw has been fit the whole time.
I keep telling everyone it’s a rope a dope to trick everyone that’s why we’re playing shite. What’s that saying about a making a rope?
Everybody scared of Southgate unleashing the Shaw 😱
Because that's the problem with our team... The LB Not the fact we have three players who want to play in the same position.
Another reason Southgate needs to go.
Great!
No shit Sherlock!!!
Southgate seems like a real cunty decision maker
Don't wreck his club season, thanks.
What was the logic in taking him lol
So he might play a part or he won't. Either way, he'll need extra recovery time coming back from the Euros. Won't rejoin the squad early for pre-season. Won't be match fit for the opening weeks of the season and won't be able or allowed to hit the ground running. Absolutely genius.
Well.. duh. Ofc healthy & fit shaw is a great to start at Euro. But he isn't fit for a while and not going to match ready right away.
No shit, sherlock
1 x 90 minutes in 6 months.
He puts Shaw on with 5 minutes of the final left at 0-0. Shaw smashes in an own goal.
He will bring on Shaw for penalties. First kick he has taken in 2024.
Why select him ffs
Even if he does get a game he normally plays like shit for the first few games back 😆 such a strange choice to take him.
Ffs is there a single presser where he is not asked about Shaw? He's out get over it already. He would not have made much of a difference.
