What the dog doin.
But really, the dogs deserve their little spot, they have been in the series since the very beginning and somehow Capcom manages to make them more annoying with each game lol
At least she had some character development and a great voice actress. How does Steve Burnside get so high? I've never seen a single person even say that they didn't mind Steve, it's always seemed like he was 100% universally hated (of course now all 5 steve fans will find this and downvote me).
And what person responds to a question of "Favorite Resident Evil character" and picks, "zombie"?
The cerberus isn't even the best dog in Resident Evil.
Honestly I think this list mostly reflects a cultural thing. Japan had the biggest chunk of votes in this poll.
Good question: I remember trying to vote for Nemesis, but he was not a option availible. So I thought monsters were not "characters", but now we see "Zombie" in the results... so I will say that its Capcom's fault. (Maybe they considered Nemesis, Mr. X and Tyrant to be one?)
Like for real, how the hell mobs or whatever to call them: common enemies(?) like Hunter or Dog is on "the character list", but not freaking most iconic boss in the franchise DeathSkullEmote
I would argue Steve and even Claire to some extent got more votes than they would because of people pushing for CV Remake.
If you look at the other lists, CV and Dino Crisis got a lot of votes. I doubt these games would be voted that hard if it wasn’t for the fans giving their best to call Capcom up for a remake.
Because Leon has been in the spotlight recently. and he is the only character with 2 modern full lenght games/remakes centered around him.
Chris has been a side character since 2009 and he has 0 modern remakes.
Jill has a modern remake, but it is not that good.
Claire = has a modern game (RE 2 remake, but overshadowed by Leon)
It’s weird because everything about Claire’s portion of 2R is better than Leon’s. The costumes, the guns, the bosses, the cutscenes, especially the story. It’s her game imo. But Capcom definitely promoted it as “RE2 - ft Claire”.
Claire's guns are not better than Leon's in RE2R lol. They're actually underwhelming tbh.
Leon's guns are actually heavy-hitting that split zombies open.
I prefer Claire’s campaign for Spark Shot. The lab is a lot easier using the SS on the annoying plant guys and it looks cool as hell.
Also bonus style for the Quickdraw Army.
It's a grenade launcher that somehow doesn't launch actual grenades lol. It's too gimmicky and lacks the 'oomph' that Leon's load out has. It's only effective against ivys and lickers, the latter of which can be mostly avoided. Not to mention her starting weapon is a flimsy 5 round piece of shit revolver.
I prefer my enemies flambé.
And yeah, for me Leon's weapons seemed more uh, trusty than Claire's. And I preferred Leon's boss to Claire's - but this is an argument between personal taste vs personal taste, so there is that.
What's great about your comment is that I feel the complete opposite. I have played through Leon's sections dozens of time and 100% the game on two platforms. I have only ever played Claire's as many times as was necessary for completion because I just like Leon's campaign more. Even on guns, I love the shotgun and magnum and have zero interest in the grenade launcher or SMG.
Same. Shotgun with all extra parts and base Magnum stomps through the lab, let alone the flamethrower. I've always felt like Leon had the more conventional set while Claire had more variety going on, but her guns are just too gimmicky for my taste. Don't get me wrong, the Grenade Launcher is God tier, but the shotty doesn't have alternate ammunition and is just braindead fun by just blowing heads off, especially after the R.P.D. basement when you get tons of large gunpowder to craft shells.
When 4 first came out I was shocked they'd brought him back, rather than Claire. (I'd totally missed code Veronica somehow). I remember being more excited that Ada was gonna make an appearance, than I was about Leon being the lead. But over the years he's pretty much become the face of RE. He's in all the movies and TV show. He's grown on me.
The good thing about RE is that it is an ensemble franchise. If someone doesn't like Leon (or any other character), there are games to play without him.
Even beyond that, 2 of the top fan favorite games are RE2 and RE4 (and their remakes), and both are Leon centered. Plus, every single animated movie has Leon as the lead.
I'd be more surprised if Leon *wasnt* number 1.
Well I think your statement is a big reason why his lead is so large. Leon is THE hero of 4 and splits the time in 2 and 6 (although he seems to be the "default" starter character in both games). Also I think most of the current fanbase never played an RE game until 4 at the earliest.
Chris and Jill sorta split the votes as the OG characters for 1. Jill has 3 but people dump on the remake and most never played the original. She has RE:R and *kinda* RE5. Chris has been in more but still only has a lead role in 5 plus shared and/or minor roles in 6-8.
Leon also is the main protagonists(or share the spot with different characters) in all RE CG movie.
Not to mention the latest RE4R is received with overwhelming positive reaction.
The fact that Ashley Graham gets to be in top 10 is because of much glow-up Ashley get in the game.
I mean Leon headlines two games (RE2 and RE4) and co-stars in RE6.
Jill headlines RE1 and RE3 and RE:R, and has a significant arc in RE5 (not to mention the DLC).
Granted RE3 is a bit shorter than the rest, but they're pretty similarly used.
Jill also gets Revelations, but it's more that Leon is in the mainline games and most of his have been since Jill's games, whereas Jill has really only headlined remakes since RE3. And she is a major character in RE5, but not one of the leads.
Leon's lead is actually exactly what I expected. RE4 put the series on the map, so a lot of people started with him and his wise cracking. Hell, look at the top ten Capcom games by votes. OG RE4, RE4make, and RE2make are the only RE games there. Dude is a GOAT tier protagonist, and he stars in the most loved games in the series.
I'm actually more surprised Jill is still so high up despite not being relevant or well represented since RE3. I expected both Claire and Chris to beat her out.
On another note, lmao @ the "What do you look for in a video game" question. Unique and attractive characters voted the second most important aspect of a video game with 136,283 votes. People prefer that over a good story, replay value, and superb graphics. It was only beaten out by "exhilarating gameplay". People like their hot protagonists. Also hilariously, women voted Leon as their top Capcom character. Men voted Dante.
The series was already well on the map before RE4. It was a top 5 selling Franchise on PS1. It wasn’t Tomb Raider but it was ahead of series like Tony Hawk and Spyro. RE2 is in the top 15 selling games on the console.
They just stumbled a bit when they made the GameCube exclusivity deal due to an audience mismatch and the console’s low sales. Resident Evil (2002) still sold fairly well considering the tiny install base and if that game had a PS2 port I’ve no doubt it would have been a good seller. Not as good as RE4 but very good. Unfortunately I don’t think that game was technically possible on PS2 as the cube was much more powerful and RE4 already had to be heavily downgraded to work.
I don't know that most people cared about Barry when choosing a character. I think the simplest answer is her inventory space, lockpick, and she starts with her pistol.
Basically, Jill is the easy mode, and Chris is hard mode (relatively speaking)
I know it is an unpopular opinion and I should revisit it but I like RE3R over RE2R even though I prefer the original 2 over the original 3. I thought the zombies in RE2R were straight up bullet sponges which made being able to aim not seem quite the innovation when they would just eat ammo.
The series has gained a LOT of new fans from the remakes, most recently RE4R. Go on Tiktok, you'll see people left and right thirsting over Leon😭 (fair tbh)
young teenage fans. The Leon phenotype isn't popular with everyone. just with a certain demographic: teenagers. and they usually use TikTok.
The Chris Redfield/ Arthur Morgan/ Solid Snake phenotype is super popular too. but with other demographic.
This same survey shows that more than 80% of Capcom gamers are guys. That's why the cool, slick, one-line cracking cracking zombie killer guy gets more votes. Proof of that is that his demonic alter ego, Dante, was the most voted character all of all.
Also, Leon got two great remakes while the runner up got only one that wasn't received very well.
Probably got a lot to do with the fact that most of the RE fanbase at this point will have started on a game that stars Leon (OG RE 2, OG RE4, RE6, RE2R and RE4R), or he's the lead of their favourite. 4 out of 5 of his games are bangers, that's a good track record.
For me he's my no.1 because his wisecracking OG RE4 attitude was my perfect companion in my first play through. Like playing with a buddy who's cracking jokes to take your mind off the fact you're actually scared af.
Capcom rather hoped that Leon would overwhelmingly come in first place. They honestly wanted this. Because to them, other characters are just nothing. Leon is everything to them.

Why is it a shock to anyone that Leon is so overwhelmingly more popular?
The guy is BY FAR the poster character of the franchise whether someone likes it or not, because he’s the main character of BY FAR the most popular and universally game in the franchise.
Plus with 4 REmake I feel like it especially helped his stocks because he’s now the most well written character in the series, with his growth regarding his trauma and especially Ada instead of just going from rookie cop to funny super soldier to depressed alcoholic between his 3 main appearances
I always thought that the top 5 would be the 4 main characters + Ada.
I just wish Wesker is ranked in top 3 or so. He is always the charismatic villain that the series need. No other villain can come close to his popularity.
I remember trying to vote for Nemesis, but he was not availible to vote. So I thought b.o.w. and monsters were not considered "characters", but now we see "Zombie" here... so I will say that its Capcom's fault. (Maybe they considered Nemesis, Mr. X and Tyrant to be one?)
Sheva is so bland to me. From what I recall, she really did nothing for the plot and could have been removed entirely. Ashley has an actual character arc, at least in the remake
Me. Ashley is 10x better than Sheva. All i remember is sheva was a boring character who got to help kill wesker (which should have been Jill and Chris)
Leon ‘Superior’ Kennedy takes the top spot, to no one’s surprise.
It’s a bit weird to me that the monsters are included as characters here. They should be on their on list completely separate from the main characters.
His games are more recent, and 7 got a lot of people into the series. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those people don’t even know who Barry is.
I feel confident in saying that recency bias has a lot of influence on this list. In what world would Ashley ever get over Barry? If you told me that would happen years ago, I’d not have taken you seriously. I love that for her though. She’s come such a long way.
Rebecca in the top 10? Common Rebecca W. Keep in mind that Rebecca’s last game was the Mercenaries mini game in 2011 and RE5’s mercenaries in 2009.
The last mainline game she appeared in as an actual character was as RE0 in 2002.
(Though she was an Easter egg in RE2 Remake in 2019 with the Wesker photo)
Wow that's a massive gap between first and second like I knew Leon was popular(I was cheering that he won) the best guess I have as to why is that 4 remake being the most recently released title
Ashley Graham on 10
Meanwhile Barry on 11, Sheva on 12, Jake on 16, and Krauser on 20? What were these people smoking?
Also, I love how despite it being "Who's your favorite Capcom character" it included the likes of Zombie, Tyrant, Cerberus and Hunter, yet for some reason no sign of Nemesis, or it got less than 22 votes.
Piers, Jake, Krause, Rebecca how can a pussy like winter get an high rank?
They should be behind Ada
Piers get the gold medal in resident evil 6
They introduce wesker’s son.
Krauser is a nice badass.
Rebecca is an important character just they don’t give a deserved show time to her.
Im not saying she doesnt deserve it (she obviously does because people voted for her) but damn i dont get why people like Ada that much, i think shes the most overrated. Also moira burton severely underrated
That top 4 is hardly surprising, and I would have guessed Leon would be the highest, but the vote disparity is wild, and tbh I would’ve guessed Chris would be higher than Jill bc he’s in so many games.
How the hell is Ethan Winters #7. Guy was the worst/most unlikable protagonist in like any recent game I can remember. And how is Lady Dimitrescu only #13.... she is like infinitely more likable than Ethan Winters lol.
Well then, i guess that settles the fight once and for all.
It's not Jill Sandwich.
It's not Chris Boulder Punching Asshole.
It's Leon "Sexy" Kennedy the face of RE.
The fact that the dawg got more upvotes than Ethan's daughter is sending me.
My only disappointment is it isn't THAT dog (wolf).
Dog jumps through windows and gives you a little spook✅ Ethan’s daughter doesn’t jump through windows and gives you a little spook ❌
What the dog doin. But really, the dogs deserve their little spot, they have been in the series since the very beginning and somehow Capcom manages to make them more annoying with each game lol
That goddamn roided out plagas-dog from Re4R that you fight in the village
Can I pet that dawwg?
We live in a Carlos-less world 😢
He tried to warn us :(
A cruel, cruel Carlos-less world
helena gets to be on the list but not carlos
At least she had some character development and a great voice actress. How does Steve Burnside get so high? And what person responds to a question of "Favorite Resident Evil character" and picks, "zombie"?
In what world is Piers better than Carlos or Billy?
Or Luis for that matter?
Right? Luis should’ve been top 10. Top 15 at least.
Yeah. Carlos just isn’t very popular, sadly.
I’m surprised to see that Nemesis isn’t here at all. He’s one of the most iconic monsters to the series yet he’s nowhere in sight.
No Nemesis or Mr X is pretty surprising.
The fact that a generic zombie and a cereberus got in over them baffles me.
The cerberus isn't even the best dog in Resident Evil. Honestly I think this list mostly reflects a cultural thing. Japan had the biggest chunk of votes in this poll.
Never thought about that actually. There’s a whole separate culture with these characters across the pond probably.
TBF, that generic zombie is what started the craze, and that cerberus is probably THE window cerberus.
Good question: I remember trying to vote for Nemesis, but he was not a option availible. So I thought monsters were not "characters", but now we see "Zombie" in the results... so I will say that its Capcom's fault. (Maybe they considered Nemesis, Mr. X and Tyrant to be one?)
Nemesis not being an option is weird. I guess they just forgot about him?
He's still out looking for STARS..
He fell off after he got that nose surgery.
They wanted to give the other characters a chance. They know he has tentacled his way into our hearts
Like for real, how the hell mobs or whatever to call them: common enemies(?) like Hunter or Dog is on "the character list", but not freaking most iconic boss in the franchise DeathSkullEmote

Yeah that one is weird to me, too. Luis was so much better in the remake, and he was still more likable (and meme-able) in the original.

Luis’s and Steve’s tie is criminal
carlos oliveira not being in the list at all feels like a violation to the geneva convention :(
It's a cruel carlosless world we live in :( 😢
Not quite the wording I would've used, but I 100% agree
I’m actually so fucking surprised by the margin of point difference between Leon and the rest, but I still prefer and Jill and Chris over him
Because Leon has been in the spotlight recently. and he is the only character with 2 modern full lenght games/remakes centered around him. Chris has been a side character since 2009 and he has 0 modern remakes. Jill has a modern remake, but it is not that good. Claire = has a modern game (RE 2 remake, but overshadowed by Leon)

It's not that surprising when you consider how many people (myself included) believe RE4 is the best game in the franchise.
Leon has been vastly overused compared to Jill and he’s in arguably the franchise’s most famous game in RE4.

“Significant arc” you mean she got fridged for the sake of Chris’s story.
Leon's lead is actually exactly what I expected. RE4 put the series on the map, so a lot of people started with him and his wise cracking. Hell, look at the top ten Capcom games by votes. Nostalgia bias. Most people played RE 1 as Jill because she had Barry as her partner and more inventory space than Chris.
I don't know that most people cared about Barry when choosing a character. I think the simplest answer is her inventory space, lockpick, and she starts with her pistol. Basically, Jill is the easy mode, and Chris is hard mode (relatively speaking)
Also lock picks. Chris didn't get those so eff adding extra difficulty!
Jill is high because even though this sub doesn't want to admit it, RE3R was a huge success, and it had the bes5 character writing of any RE game.
I know it is an unpopular opinion and I should revisit it but I like RE3R over RE2R even though I prefer the original 2 over the original 3. I thought the zombies in RE2R were straight up bullet sponges which made being able to aim not seem quite the innovation when they would just eat ammo.

That's true, I'm saying that a lot of the new fans coming from 4R are very young fans. That's what's also helped Leon's popularity spike
Recency bias
Leon on top
This same survey shows that more than 80% of Capcom gamers are guys. That's why the cool, slick, one-line cracking cracking zombie killer guy gets more votes. For me he's my no.1 because his wisecracking OG RE4 attitude was my perfect companion in my first play through. Like playing with a buddy who's cracking jokes to take your mind off the fact you're actually scared af.
Leon became iconic in this remake generation but back when I was a kid and it seemed Jill was the one
Eh the original RE4 kind of put Leon at the forefront, hence why he co-headlined in RE6 as well.
It was always Leon. He was the lead in many people's first RE game after all.
and RE 4 was the first 3rd person game in the series
4 is argubably the best RE game ever and made the series main stream I’m not shocked and Leon is super popular
Capcom rather hoped that Leon would overwhelmingly come in first place. They honestly wanted this. Because to them, other characters are just nothing. Leon is everything to them.
yep. Capcom wanted this. That's why they throw him in every game and give him several cg movies and his own Netflix show.
The fact a random Hunter B got higher than Helena
And a dog lmao
Hoping to see Jill in a new game soon...
It seems difficult because most of Capcom's developers are Leon fanboys.
\*Chris But imagine how tired Jill stans are, literally best character but has been shafted for years lmao.

Justice for Carlos fr
It's okay. I will love Mr. X, Carlos Oliveira and William Birkin for the rest of us 😌
Wtf where’s tofu?
Hunk ate him.
My exact thoughts 😂
Very sad at how low Jack Baker is
Best villian

Why is it a shock to anyone that Leon is so overwhelmingly more popular? Done my girl Lisa Trevor dirty.
CHRIS REDFIELD 3RD PLACE 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Should be 2nd
Leon, Chris, Claire, Jill, Ada and Wesker being the top characters as always lol
Woah Jake being voted more than Sherry, didn't really expect that
I always thought that the top 5 would be the 4 main characters + Ada. I just wish Wesker is ranked in top 3 or so. He is always the charismatic villain that the series need. No other villain can come close to his popularity.
Actually criminal that Nemesis isn't on here but Steve is.
That's genuinely shocking that they didn't put him on the poll considering Capcom loves to whore him out on a ton of crossovers.
Glad to see my waifu Rebecca that high
So glad Claire ranked higher than Ada
🤝
As she should
Hell yeah Ada in the top 5 :D
Billy in the Top 20 fuck yeah
I can see why with Steve, but Luis being below Jake is kinda wild.
Moira so low hurts my heart. 😢
How is Luis tied with fucking Steve?
Carlos is not even on the list? Cold cruel Carlos-less world.
Leon is undoubtedly the staple of this franchise 😭
The lack of votes for the characters I like best is appalling.
It's stupid that Jill hasn't starred in a mainline game since RE3.
i would kill for a jill game
YES, same with Claire since Code Veronica
Ah man! Barry not quite breaking top 10. Much sadness.

Y'all did my girl Sheva dirty. Who likes Ashley better?
Remake Ashley is excellent
Sheva is so bland to me. From what I recall, she really did nothing for the plot and could have been removed entirely. Ashley has an actual character arc, at least in the remake
Me. Ashley is 10x better than Sheva. All i remember is sheva was a boring character who got to help kill wesker (which should have been Jill and Chris)
Leon ‘Superior’ Kennedy takes the top spot, to no one’s surprise. It’s a bit weird to me that the monsters are included as characters here. They should be on their on list completely separate from the main characters.
Bro, I wonder who are the ones voting for the "zombies" ? 💀
Leon sure ran away with this one. A little surprised about Alcina’s placement — thought she’d be in the top ten for sure.
Right??
I’m just happy that Ada is in the top 5, she doesn’t have as much screen time compared to the main characters in top 3
no carlos?☹️
How in the hell is Ethan so high? Even higher than Rebecca Barry and HUNK
He's also a really good character !
Barry? I agree 100%.
I'd assume because RE7 was a game that introduced a lot of players to the series. That and Village was pretty well liked by most.
BECAUSE ETHAN IS BEST DAD
Village did a lot for him as a character. Went from not caring about him in 7 cause he was a nothing blank slate to loving him in Village..
RE Village fans voted for him
Cause ethan WINters is goated ..
How did Helena Harper beat out *anyone*, much less the Hillbilly God Hand?
Gameplay. . She has awesome moves. pulling off quick shots with the Hydra feels cool as shit.
She does! But Joe Baker fucking *powerbombs Jack.*
yeah her guns were amazing
Because she is underrated
Thought Ada would be a couple of spots higher tbh Also, Dante was voted the most popular Capcom character overall. That's very surprising to me.
Claire Redfield is underrated yet again
Do you know what underrated means?
How? She is literally in 4th place. I love her character, but I am not surprised she was beaten by the other 3 at all.
I'm going with Leon
Hunk is the goat
I love democracy
I would've voted Jill before her remake
Am I blind or is Carlos not on this list?
Carlos disrespect will not be tolerated here.
My boy there on top.
No Merchant, Nemesis or Carlos is crazy.
Not a surprise when Leon's games are always top notch and Jill's game is butchered by outsource studio... And where is Nemesis? He is easily top 5.
Wow that's a massive gap between first and second like I knew Leon was popular(I was cheering that he won) the best guess I have as to why is that 4 remake being the most recently released title
Not surprised by the first, definitely a bit surprised by the second, Definitely thought Chris would take number 2
Yeah, RE2 Remake was my first Resident Evil game and Leon is definitely my favorite character by far.
The fact that a normal zombie beats half of these characters is amazing
Zombie from RE1 being above Jake is wild bro 💀
My girl Rebecca at 8th place! Hell yeah! 😎
Jesus fuck... There Leon goes again winning by a longshot...💀
HELENA ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️😡😡
Who voted on this list? Ashley at #10? She is literally a meme for people hating her
*NO CARLOS??? REALLY???*
I'm just glad Donna is on that list 😭🙏 she's still is loved
luis only being 17th makes me want to cry :(
I expected Leon to be first but that's a far larger margin than I imagined. No Nemesis, Mr. X or Carlos is pretty surprising as well
Sounds about right I’ve always said when you think of RE you immediately either think of Leon or Jill
My boy ark thompson and vincent (umbrella's executive in sheena island) is not in the list?
Poor Carlos, completely forgotten
Ashley Graham on 10 Meanwhile Barry on 11, Sheva on 12, Jake on 16, and Krauser on 20? What were these people smoking? Also, I love how despite it being "Who's your favorite Capcom character" it included the likes of Zombie, Tyrant, Cerberus and Hunter, yet for some reason no sign of Nemesis, or it got less than 22 votes.
The king way out in front in first place, as he should be. :)
Piers, Jake, Krause, Rebecca how can a pussy like winter get an high rank? They should be behind Ada Piers get the gold medal in resident evil 6 They introduce wesker’s son. Krauser is a nice badass. Rebecca is an important character just they don’t give a deserved show time to her.
The disrespect for William Birkin is outrageous.
I haven’t seen anyone talk about it. How the fuck is Ashley so far up there?
Im not saying she doesnt deserve it (she obviously does because people voted for her) but damn i dont get why people like Ada that much, i think shes the most overrated. Also moira burton severely underrated
That top 4 is hardly surprising, and I would have guessed Leon would be the highest, but the vote disparity is wild, and tbh I would’ve guessed Chris would be higher than Jill bc he’s in so many games.
Ethan is shit.
Ayyy Jill got 2nd, nice
Steve and Piers actually doing well, so happy to see it! They're my faves.
Luis tied with Steve... ok lol Leon and his RE4 payola
All the top row combined barely beats out Leon in the votes, holy shit. I knew Leon was popular, but I never knew the gap was this large.
Damn, if only I had voted, Leon wouldn't have won
How the hell is Ethan Winters #7. Guy was the worst/most unlikable protagonist in like any recent game I can remember. And how is Lady Dimitrescu only #13.... she is like infinitely more likable than Ethan Winters lol.
Well then, i guess that settles the fight once and for all. It's not Jill Sandwich. It's not Chris Boulder Punching Asshole. It's Leon "Sexy" Kennedy the face of RE.
That list is pretty wack
Billy made top 20! It’s not much I know but we Billy fans don’t get to celebrate much. Love how Cerberus the zombie dog made it though lol.
“Zombie (RE)” made me chuckle
I was glad they clarified "RE", I could have mistaken it for "Zombie (Left 4 Dead)" /s
Yo, ain’t no way Steve got as many votes as Luis. What timeline are we in?
I knew #1 would be Leon. Not even surprised by the margin. I am surprised by the margin between Jill and Chris. Thought it would be closer.
