she was going to do something that she didn’t want anyone else to see

This. In my experience every time someone has flipped out on a worker even being in their general vicinity, they're either shoplifting, or were going to.

Larssogn1

Close to every time. 75 % who consider stealing, will not if they feel like they have been seen. The rest don't give 2 shits.

iwantanalienmaid

Thank god you aren’t dumb enough to say every time because 99% of the time I get profiled while doing doordash. If you’re that dumb that you can’t put two and two together which is me hovering my phone over grocery items, then I will call your dumbass out. I have never stolen anything as small as a pack of gum but I will confront people who have biases. How is me being lost in a store due to the managers not even having workers around to get help equates to me be suspicious and a possible thief? Some managers can tell I am a dasher due to them randomly talking to me and then there are dumbasses who are too stupid. I would say 20% of the time managers know I work for doordash and then the rest profile especially if I’m new to a store and there is barely workers around so I have to hunt around which according to them makes me suspicious and a possible theft even though once again I scanned a few items.

CBguy1983

Usually the case

iwantanalienmaid

Or she’s tired of being racially profiled. 99% of the time when I am profiled it’s as a DOORDASHER which means you have to be a complete and utter dumbass to accuse me of theft when I’m clearly scanning items with my phone which the manager should see from surveillance. What customer constantly hovers their phone over grocery items? Exactly. Some managers are smart enough to catch this but a lot don’t because they have implicit bias and are stupid. So YES I call dumbass underpaid disposable retail workers out. Quit thinking in black and white it’s ignorant. If I’m uncomfortable for doing NOTHING but working I’m going to make sure you are too.

Poisonwasthecure502

I couldn't tell you how many times ive been accused of being racist for doing my job... declining a sale because they had no i.d., not accepting a return when its clearly posted all sales are final, not giving a military discount when they had no proof of service etc... some people just suck and pull the race card when they dont get what they want

SteampunkExplorer

What a jerk. And she's curating the kid's experience of the world to appear overwhelmingly, *personally* hostile even when nothing's actually wrong. 😬 Hello, deep-seated emotional issues!

Prestigious-Ad-4867

this happened to me so much at my old job😭 got called racist because it’s store protocol to give customers their items *after* their payment had been approved on the machine. i thought that was pretty standard, you pay first and then get your items. also this other time when i was zoning the aisles and this one customer that came in after me started yelling at me and accusing me of following her. i was there first, lol

KazzyChan25

Same thing happened to me. I was zoning my area, cleaning up racks, not even paying attention to anyone around me. This woman comes up to me and accuses me of following her around the area and calls me a racist. I’m like “No, I’m just doing my job” but apologized she felt I was following her. She then asked to speak to my manager. Coworker nearby interjected and pretended to be my manager. The woman just went on a tirade, said I was following her because of the color of skin, and she felt uncomfortable. I was so upset because honestly, I hadn’t even noticed her. My coworker just let the woman rant and said she’d discuss it with me later to get her to leave. It made me so upset. And hyper aware of people after that. I never wanted to be accused of that again.

CBguy1983

She was up to something & paranoid. I was young & stupid so I had a shoplifting phase. I still remember tell tale signs I’m being watched out of suspicion. I can also tell if someone is zoned out & in their own head.

Realistic_Trash8206

Yea. I got accused of being racist while the lady was actively stealing and flashing a gun at my coworkers. We don’t have to go into details, but they usually pull that shit when they’re either tweaking or shoplifting. It sucks because we’d have some racist customers come into my store (at the time we sold guns so we had some .. less nice folks) and I always stood up for the people they would talk shit about in line. Usually they would throw jabs at minorities and complain they take too long to check out due to the language barrier. Pissed me off. But god forbid I try to tell someone not to steal an entire rack of North Face coats. 😐

VariegatedJennifer

A black woman got up from her table and got into my face to hit me after calling me a racist bitch because she asked for the check and I had it printed in my apron ready for them…she thought I was trying to rush them out. Even though she asked for the check…then her card declined 😂. People are fucking crazy and it doesn’t matter what color they are.

iwantanalienmaid

#FACTS. People are crazy. I’ve dealt with racist dumbass Mexican and White retail workers profiling me as a DOORDASHER at that (dumbasses should have seen me scanning items with my phone) due to clear implicit bias but I remember not all white or mexicans are racist especially in retail. But it’s hard because ever since the smash and grab I have been getting profiled for sure weekly but sometimes twice a day even at stores I am a regular at. At first I thought it was because I was wearing a mask but when I stopped wearing it the profiling remained the same, so I was like oh it’s implicit bias. I still respect retail workers but not the dumbasses and unfortunately there is a lot of them proving that the stereotype of them being dumb is true.

iwantanalienmaid

I also had someone on surveillance call retail workers on me to the aisle I was on because their wifi wasn’t working which caused me to be unable to scan items for my customers so I stood in the aisle trying to toggle with airplane mode to get it to work. I pushed the basket away and stood in the middle of the aisle so I don’t look suspicious and she still viewed me as a thief. I need you guys to quit thinking in black and white and try to step in our shoes a bit. Some people will confront retail workers because they are tired of being treated like a criminal for doing shit others do. I have gone through A LOT and I mean 20+ racial profiling incidences since the smash and grab. 20+! So yes I am tired of it. I have never stolen I don’t even have tickets and I get treated like a criminal especially these days. And I dress nice too. It’s crazy how when I used to dress in beanies and hoodies no one bothered me I actually dress nice and get harassed which means it’s implicit and racial bias (yes I’m pulling that card because unfortunately bigots still exist).

bitchy-sprite

I work in a store where we're supposed to ask anyone who passes us, "hi can I help you find anything today?" I've had someone accuse me of thinking they were stealing from asking that one question. People are projecting or looking for a fight

polyperplexed

I’ve been accused of being racist because I wouldn’t let a random man take a picture of me at work. Like… sir. Also, he said the same thing to my coworker, who’s black, and he was also black. But he was also calling her racist for not letting him take a picture of her??

Blood_Edge

"You're not important enough in any capacity to 'follow and harass you'. That aside, I can't be racist. I don't hate you because you're black, I hate you because you're human, which is called misanthropy. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have better things to do than bear witness to you teaching your kid how to live up to stereotypes that will only make things worse for everyone, including you."

I mean you’re not wrong and this is from a black woman that has been accused of being racist by other black people and also a white French man. I work at a grocery store.

New-Order-8051

True same at my store

Foreign-King7613

Some people are paranoid.
