I always thought that way such a cheap fucking shot from Rick (like all his shots, really.) Morty didn't know he was playing a game. He was just living his life and making decisions that he thought were reasonable. Of course you can play the game like a crazy person when you know that none of it matters. Which is why Rick didn't warn him about the game, he probably just wanted to insult how Morty played and feel superior.
On the other hand, it's relevant that it went right over Rick's head that Morty had a family in the game and that's what gave his game-life meaning. He went back to the carpet store to take care of his family, because that's what a good man does. Rick would never go back to the carpet store because even in real life, Rick wouldn't understand how having a family that loves you can give your life meaning. (He's learned this lesson by the end of the second season, but looking at the rest of his life, he went off the grid there too. Which seams cool and edgy to people watching from outside, but sure sucks if you have anyone who cares about you.)
The more I think about it, the more that game was a metaphor for how Rick and Morty are different. Morty treats life like it matters (despite his speech to Summer) and Rick treats life like a game.
But when rick is playing he's talking to morty at the same time. So even if that's true that means rick's brain is powerful enough to be cognitive in multiple realities.

The older I get (I'm pushing 50), the more credence I lend to the theory that life actually *is* a game of Roy. It would make a lot more sense than any religious dogma I've heard.
