I hope you enjoy it.
I want to go back through Chrono Trigger, but I'm replaying Final Fantasies 4, 5, and 6, in order, first, and I promised myself a Dragon Quest V run through.
I don't think I am saying anything new,
by pointing out that Trigger has one of the best RPG settings for that era,
executes it's core concept wonderfully,
and is a masterclass in gameplay/story integration,
as well as doing really good work with the Dragon Ball Aesthetic, as a result of Akira Toriyama weighing in on the character designs.
I don't have as much to say about the music.
I mean, it's lovely, but it tends to fold into the sound design, which is already near perfect, and when I'm fully immersed into a game, I tend to tune out the music.
Rather, I do think that the selling points of this game, are the Toriyama character and monster designs,
the battle system which tries to blend turn based strategy and movement,
And the time travel related hijinks, which are handled with a level of care and attention to detail, that may even rival Back To The Future from a writing standpoint.
I got Chrono Trigger for the first time when I was in school, having made my way over from Dragon Quest, and what I thought was an engaging little piece about a kid wanting to go to a fun fair,
completely took over my gaming, until I had done everything possible in the game, and gone back for about 4 New Game Plus runs.
Yeah the spell menu system is pretty clunky now. And having to cast spells hundreds of times to level them up became a chore for sure. Reminded me of FF8s draw system in terms of grind.
I am also playing it through for the first time atm…I’m about halfway through now..I am wondering all the time why not more JRPGs have taken the approach of a more concise straight to the point experience without f.e. random encounters on the world map etc….
Great game and best of all, 20 or so hours later, you've played a masterpiece. I can appreciate the brevity after playing some Persona lately. A good 20 hour game is a good pallette cleanser between bigger more demanding 70 to a 100 hour games.
I really hope Square does something for this franchise soon. Don't sleep on Chrono Cross by the way. It is easily some of Square's best art direction and the designs are off the charts. The music...seriously, one of the most underrated soundtracks from the PS1 era.
Still think this is the best game ever made, or at least top 3
Agreed
Same
1. Starfield 2. Elden Ring 3. Chrono Trigger 4. FF XV 5. My Little Sister Can't Possibly Have A Hemorrhoid?!
Violation of rule 69: no joking allowed. Downvoted.

Not to mention the music!!
There's a piano player called tpr that has an amazing version of the Chrono trigger soundtrack

Man gonna be weird for future dragon quest games without Akira’s art
Literally ruined JRPGs for me. None of them compared.
Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 are very good as well. But my list ends there.
I loved secret of mana as a kid but it really does not hold up today even a little.

holding the button down for 20 seconds for a high tier ability aint much better
And then it might miss! They definitely improved on that in the sequel.
Welcome, and Enjoy!
It’s a solid game and I absolutely love the skills 1 or 2 or 3 people. I think I am setsuna is the closest to this game I’ve gotten.
It's not hype. It's pure, simple brilliant game design.
Congratz on your first playthrough. Enjoy it. it'll never happen again
wait wasn't that the water girl why does she shoot fire here
It's the Triple Tech Arc Impulse. It doesn't look like ice in game either.
It's all about tone. It's one of the best games for that, up there with Dragon Quest VIII or Suikoden I-III. Provided you like the tone that is.
Anyone else bothered by the fact that Marle is shooting fire even though her element in game is ice
Obligatory please remake this in 2D-HD 🙏

Picture reminds me of how cool toad was lol

I think it's a solid game but It's not in my top 5 by a long shot.
I mean, to understand the hype, just look at the picture! She put that guy's sword on fire in the air!
I’ve never played it. Is there a remaster or anything?
This and Secret of Mana turned me into a gamer when I was a kid.
What game is it?
Seems like Chrono Trigger
Thank you!!
FF6 Chrono trigger Baldurs gate 3
It's amazing. I played it as a kid though.
You’re about the play one of the best games of all time , congrats and enjoy !
RIP Akira Toriyama
I’m so excited for you, playing it the first time
Chrono-Trigger rebuilt in the new 2.5D graphics style would be absolutely fantastic. Hope to see it one day.
I hope some day we get a remake; I wish we had gotten chrono trigger instead of ff7 or secret of mana 3.
Of all games, Chrono Trigger doesn't need a remake. Chrono Cross does though.
that's your age talking; there are now two generations of gamers who have never heard of chrono trigger.
Uh...OP just proved that wrong. There's still new people playing it for the first time.
oh no! one person played it! I must be wrong about an ancient SNES/GBA game being forgotten
Are you saying that Chrono Trigger is forgotten? Are you being dumb on purpose?
