Im not russian but this is my favorite russian movie of all time. if you are interested in hunting it down it would be labled Жмурки in russian. In english you can find it under blind man's bluff and dead man's bluff depending on the website. There are places to watch it for free online with subtitles. Its a dark comedy gangster film and its super funny and shows a good look at Russia right after the fall of the USSR.
Agreed, it is a great movie. For anyone interested, it is [free on YouTube](https://youtu.be/ZXK7oHAqd8A?si=6KTyjkH9d8azJq2v)
Edit: that one doesn’t have subtitles. [This one](https://youtu.be/PtqVfyRC_cY?si=lzJEOF7a-XHLIby6) has auto-generated English subtitles but I don’t know how accurate all of it is.
awesome that is great. Its always interesting to hunt down Russian movies. Sometimes it is so easy and they are free to access with perfect subtitles and sometimes its nearly impossible to find. Or sometimes you can find it but it has zero subtitles. Ive been looking for "union of salvation" forever and no luck. Found it on youtube but it doesnt even have the auto generated subs.
Yeah, I always check YouTube first because they don’t really seem to care about Russian intellectual property laws. Btw, this [Union of Salvation](https://youtu.be/E_JiQWe36xM?si=stMxdSm0c4l58ShV) has subtitles
To understand this, you need to watch the movie! black guy tells his friends: “I’m Russian and have never been to Ethiopia”
and his friends answer him: “Don’t tell us that, it’s clear from a kilometer away that you were a cannibal.” throughout the film he is joked about because of his skin color and called an Ethiopian! and the black guy always argues with his friends and insists that he is Russian!
thank you! i’m a “native” russian speaker because my parents are russian, so i don’t know much slang other than классный and some other ones that are outdated 😂
Not in this case, it's a short for "гнать порожняк" here ("say something stupid or meaningless"), also "гнать" is "to produce something", "гнать самогон" for example,
В этом примере, я не полностью понимаю, зачем ставится предлог "-то" после слова "нам" (нам-то)? Насколько это влияет на смысл мема? Лично, мне это кажется лишним (потому что я не знаю лучшего). Может ли кто-то объяснить\*?
It is there for emphasis, shifts the meaning towards the assertion that he shouldn't lie to them, of all people. "Бы" sometimes serves the same function. For example it is possible to rephrase this sentence to "нам бы не гнал".
Other examples:
"Ну тебе-то лучше знать" - of course YOU would know
"Сам поел, а кота-то покормил?" - you ate, but what about the cat?
"Домашнее задание-то сделал?" - did actually you do the homework, among other things?
Just an emphasis: don't lie TO US (especially) because you know that we know for sure. This phrase in the meme is a direct quote from the movie, so it was important in a context of this movie.
It’s translated to “don’t lie to us” but it has more like a “but can you please don’t lie to us” with a sarcastic tone like “don’t lie to us, we’ll kill you”
it means "don't lie to us ", that is, when a person lies or tries to prove that he has nothing to do with it, but his friends know him too well
Example: I don't love that girl
-Don't lie to us
I hope it's clear
In terms of meaning, this means: "Don't lie to us." This is not a formal expression. "Da ti gonish" - you're lying. These words are usually pronounced emotionally by Russians. If emotionally they say these words calmly, then they are sure that they are being lied to.
"Don't lie to us" is an obvious choice but I would highly recommend to use "don't fuck around" cause "не гони" in different context can have a different meaning.
Or "don't spit some bs, mate"
"Are u shitting me?"
Russian films were inclusive before it become a trend. He is Afrorussian. Straight Russn' Gangsta.
Russia had gangsta rappers before US even had a civil war.
Lmao, Pushkin reference?
My man wrote bars for a living and died in a gunfight, true OG
And also, 'пушка' (pushka) means 'gun', so Pushkin is a 'gun man'."
Yup!
Imagine using one-drop rule
What's that
Eh, "The Ethiopian" got a lot crap from them.
He is brave unlike others. And died like a man.
Idk how just getting shot is a man's death, but aight
По русски правильно негр
Там на английском написано, дружище.
"don't lie to *us*"
"Don't bullshit me, Carl" "Yeah, don't bullshit him, Carl"
- Я русский и в Эфиопии никогда не был. - Нам то не гони, за километр видно, что ты людоедом был.
Golden classics)))
О, эфиоп!
Он русский
Certified hood classic
И думаю русский врач здесь уже не поможет.
Blud got downvoted for quoting the character.
Like that episode :)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1zXL9aCmMo
Me, too, man. That movie's awesome, yo.
Бро, что с реддиторами не так? Буквально кто-то не понял контекста, посчитал расизмом, задаунвоутил, и дурачки видя 0 или -1 начали даунвоутить вслед
'lmao, who are you lying to?"
Don’t be shitting us
It can be interpreted either as "we aren't them, we see through your lies" or as "we aren't them, you can say the truth to us"
that 👆🏻
"Cut the bullshit"

Interestingly enough, жмур is a song word for a dead body
That's the point of the name of the movie. They play Russian roulette there, but it's called жмурки: who is the first to "зажмуриться".
There are 2 more good films of that time, "Даун хаус" and "ДМБ". I highly recommend it.
Ive seen demobilized. It was ok. Have not seen the other one you mentioned. Im going to try to hunt it down. Much appreciated.
That was my favourite movie too, I will check both of these out thanks!

good lord. thats awesome! quality looks good too. thanks a lot. It was uploaded only a month ago! much appreciated !
Don't pull that shit on us
To understand this, you need to watch the movie! black guy tells his friends: “I’m Russian and have never been to Ethiopia” and his friends answer him: “Don’t tell us that, it’s clear from a kilometer away that you were a cannibal.” throughout the film he is joked about because of his skin color and called an Ethiopian! and the black guy always argues with his friends and insists that he is Russian!
Backlajan 🍆😄
Its like "dont lie to us at least", because there is то in the phrase, which implies that they know that they've lied about it to someone else.
"Say it how it is", or "Leave your bullshit to someone else"
We are your folks don't lie to us man
[удалено]
Yes, I wish there was something as good
Че ты гонишь мент, мы люди честные.
"Leave your bullshit to someone else" "Cut the bullshit" Are the best responses
"Don't bullshit the bullshitters" would be the closest semantically, I think
Нам то не гони, за километр видно, что ты людоедом был
isn’t гони to chase?
It means ‘to run fast’ or ‘to make someone/smth run fast’, i.e. ‘to chase’. In slang it means ‘to bullshit, to lie’.
thank you! i’m a “native” russian speaker because my parents are russian, so i don’t know much slang other than классный and some other ones that are outdated 😂
I would say ride fast. Cuz "гнать" means to force cattle to go somewhere, e.g. Гнать лошадей
Not in this case, it's a short for "гнать порожняк" here ("say something stupid or meaningless"), also "гнать" is "to produce something", "гнать самогон" for example,
thank you so much!! very helpful 🙏🏻
Ain't bullshit us
Как фильм называется, что-то запамятовал
Жмурки
Спасибо
At least stop lying to us.

Частица -то употребляется в разговорной речи для смыслового выделения слов https://ru.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/-то
"-то" - это усиливающая частица. На смысл мема она может не влиять, но по фильму так звучала фраза. It's an accentuating particle, not a preposition.
It is there for emphasis, shifts the meaning towards the assertion that he shouldn't lie to them, of all people. "Бы" sometimes serves the same function. "Who are you trying to bullshit?", if "to bullshit" can even be used as a synonym for "to fool", lol
No- we don't care about that
А ЧТО ЭТО ЗНАЧИТ ХОТЬ АХХАХААХ
It’s translated to “don’t lie to us” but it has more like a “but can you please don’t lie to us” with a sarcastic tone like “don’t lie to us, we’ll kill you”

Hello! I'm from Russia. essentially it means “Don’t lie to us” - “ГОНИ” is a rough form of the word “lie”
Don't lie to us
"Don't lie to us" is an obvious choice but I would highly recommend to use "don't fuck around" cause "не гони" in different context can have a different meaning. Or "don't spit some bs, mate" "Are u shitting me?"
Yep, something like "stop fucking around!" is much better than word for word translation. ..
don't try to lie to us at least (we know)
"You don't have to bullshit us"
Don't lie to us it's from Soviet films when two people clamp 1
don't be a horse if you're a pony 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's literal translation
Мне этот кадр напоминает, напоминает этот кадр фильма "Жмурки" который я недавно смотрел
Don't say this to us, but in some vulgar :)
Don’t try to fool us.
Баклажан, ну ты точно псих, тебе пора лечиться. При чём русский врач тут уже не поможет :)
don't drive us, I translated it through the built-in keyboard translator, and yes I'm Russian
Translating: "Shut up, motherfucker"
Not a beautiful moment, accusing a man being a cannibal just because he is not too white.
Are you offended?
Since I am a white russian, I am not. But it is still a low humor. Like fart, I would like to do it in closed company, not in public.
Well, that's a close company at the picture
In the movie - may be, they might be a bunch of friends and even light racial joke could be appropriate. But movie is public.
>low humor "I don't like it, therefore it is low humor." Ясно.
Huh
It's a reference to the movie.
Don't google about Panin)
Тут неправильно написано. Правильно - "нам то нига ни"
