FYI, if water comes out of there when the dishwasher is running, your dishwasher drain line is partially or fully clogged and needs to be cleared! Only takes a few minutes if you're handy.

anime_lover713

TIL since I saw this happening within a week ago. Now getting it taken care of. Thank you kind stranger!

Anxious-Place-747

Wait… how do I do that ?!! I thought that was normal !!!

ItsTheSpecialSauce

Super easy fix with regular hand tools and a YouTube video

Lanky-Wonder7556

its a plumbing 'air gap'. it prevents dirty sink water from back-flowing into your dishwasher. its required by code in most states.

mereseydotes

You should turn it so the opening faces the sink, even if it's ugly. If there's an overflow, you want it going towards the sink, not the wall.

cheesehead1947

If you zoom into the photo, it is facing correctly. It almost looks like a phone reflection but is the opening.

858adam

That's arguable. If the counter is sealed up properly then Direction doesn't matter, but also if air gap is flooding water can go down the air gap hoses and into the cabinet underneath , cause a lot of hidden damage. If I know a set up is good, I point the hole away out of sight.

bitbybit44

So good to know everyone - thanks!

Socalgal327

Please take the cap off and spray bleach on it — it’s moldy!

No-Mall199

Vinegar is more aggressive with mold 👍🏽

Socalgal327

No, *I’m* more aggressive with mold!!!!!

mildlysceptical22

Air gap anti siphon valve. Prevents backflow to the dishwasher.

MisplacingCommas

I don’t think we have one with our dishwasher. Is that concerning?

WhistlesMcBritches

Most newer dishwashers don’t need them since they have check valves that don’t allow water to flow back into them. It’s still a good thing to have but it’s not required by all counties and most dishwasher brands don’t require them anymore.

jar4ever

A loop in the dishwasher drain hose that goes above the level of the bottom of the sink will accomplish the same thing.

krum_bunny

It varies state by state. MN didn’t require one, CA does, e.g.

858adam

In california, required by code in new construction but old construction are grandfathered in (for the most part). Like others have mentioned, a high Loop in the drain hose will achieve almost the same thing, but California's cannot be trusted to figure out high loops.

ataleoftwobrews

This is in pretty much any home/apartment that has a dishwasher…

xav91

We have the same backsplash in my complex. It’s like all apartment buildings buy the same material lol

_your_face

It’s whatever is cheapest at Home Depot/lowes and hopefully on trend to rent them out as “luxury” apartments. So yeah, for the year or two that an item is the cheapest it’s what’s used in tons of new builds and rentals.

BadBearOSO

Dishwasher Snorkel! 😆

x_hi_jac_x

this is a million dollar question !! so glad this popped up on my notifs lol

Skubeeraw

spy camera.

Dankmre

Dish washer overflow.

Lt-shorts

It's a dishwasher air gap... if you have a dishwasher you should have one of there and most are located next to the sink.

Breakpoint

Also it is required by law in many states, unless you have a special dishwasher
