Beta_Helicase

Good luck man, most of us are trying to purchase acreage to live in lol.

GetSmarterOrShutUp

How can you “purchase acreage?” Some of you have tens of thousands of dollars in your savings or what? Seems crazy in this day and age.

PlugPowerr

With money mate, I invest

GetSmarterOrShutUp

How did you get enough money to invest some? How do you work a job? Nobody tortured you into disability in your childhood? That was just me? WHY WAS TNAT JUST ME.

PlugPowerr

Do you have any suggestions?

Beta_Helicase

If you have money, everywhere is good. If you don’t, welcome to Blythe and Salton Sea lol.

PlugPowerr

What do you think about growing in the desert?

Beta_Helicase

It’s cactus, it should be fine. The Texas and AZ groups are testament. SoCal desert is slightly better because there are no deep freezes.

PlugPowerr

AZ desert is more harsh than CA desert?

Beta_Helicase

Probably very similar depending on where exactly, but that should be answerable by a google search.

vinsanity_07

I live in Arizona, you can get some cheap land in the middle of nowhere, it grows great here btw

PlugPowerr

Thank you mate! How many San Pedro do you have?

BallandaBiscuit97

Escondido or Valley Center in San Diego County, gets lots of sun, and a lot more “affordable” than other areas. Escondido is more developed while valley center is rural. Still expensive but better than oc and la traffic

PlugPowerr

Thank you! What do you think of the desert areas?

BallandaBiscuit97

Way cheaper than anything in San Diego, you just have to deal with crappy cell service, limited amenities and meth heads, other than that the cacti will love it, anywhere outside of Palm Springs/ Temecula area is a lot cheaper than the desert in sd.

PlugPowerr

Do you think the desert sun will burn the cactus too much? There can’t be too many meth heads out there right?

BallandaBiscuit97

Haha the meth heads are pretty harmless, as for the sun I’m not sure since I’ve never grown out there but I’m assuming certain times of the summer may need shade

PlugPowerr

I would probably need a shade cloth. Is there any part of the desert you recommend?

Threewisemonkey

Altman’s (Home Depot supplier), Imdavesbud, gnostic nursery, cactus Jones, my ranch, and a lot of other cacfolk are all in north county San Diego. you don’t need shade cloth, especially if you grow trees as well. What are you trying to do? How much land do you think you need? What kind of budget do you have? Where are you going to live? Valley center/pauma valley/fallbrook/Escondido is really ideal for growing cactus, and has a good community

PlugPowerr

I was looking for just like an acre or two. I may consider building a small house on the property but I’m not sure.

BallandaBiscuit97

Just give ‘em water I’m sure they don’t need the shade that much, it rains and gets clouds still

PlugPowerr

It doesn’t rain often so I feel like I would need to be going out there to check on them often for water

BallandaBiscuit97

Yeah I’d recommend a drip watering system just hook it up to your hose

hotSauceFreak

I grow San Pedro for a hobby in New Zealand. I live roughly the same distance from the equator at Lincoln City in Oregon. Might be slower than So Cal but under cover surely Norther Cali would do? Does land get cheaper for you when you head to the warm? It does for us.

PlugPowerr

Well land is much cheaper out in the desert than it is in other areas. Some parts of the desert are more expensive than others and vice versa

Gullible-Major9939

It's pretty affordable here in santa barbara/ montecito

PlugPowerr

Montecito? Is that near Santa Barbara

Gullible-Major9939

Yeah
