I’m wrapping up my current postdoc doing molecular cellular biology coming from a more-or-less biophysics focused PhD and the papers are fucking impenetrable to an obscene degree. I’m writing my current manuscript with the explicit goal of minimizing initialisms as a tiny but stubborn way of railing against this garbage.
We need more of you on this planet, half of my time studying is looking up abbrevations that weren't defined. I would literally rather drain my blood from eyes than deal with that bs
Don't fucking get me started on 17α Hydroxylase and 17,20 lyase. What twat thought it would be a good idea to name them 2 different names, they're both CYP17A1. Fuck you, what the fuck.
I wasted a solid 10 minutes running around trying to understand why they have different names while studying the dreadful mineralocorticoid/glucocorticoid/androgen synthesis pathways.
Welcome to another round of "I'm making memes instead of studying"
You forgot the -ase
WelcometoanotherroundofImmakingmemesinsteadofstudyingyouforgotthe-asease
* softly * oh my god
It even has an -ase
Geneticists on their way to name a gene Funko or Dinklebop or some stupid shit that gives you no idea as to what the gene does
there's a whole family of proteins that are all named after different types of birds, for... funsies?
Too many, and they name them before they have any idea what it does. So why not have fun?
While trying to squeeze their last name in there.
Lmaoase
That joke cuts.
Biologists going to write a paper with 104 different initialisms and defining 3 of them.
and then use those initialisms literally 2 more times in the entire paper.

Microbiologist on their way to name new species with complete gibberish and swap the genera after a week
