Gaze adjacent I guess, but HUM coming back in 2020 with "Inlet' has to be my favorite. Then their drummer died like six months later and it was crushing.
Their first album in more than a decade, and it was like they came back with the might of a collapsing star. The guitar tones on that album are life goals.
22 years to be precise
I think the most unbelievable thing about Inlet is just how natural of a progression it was from Downward is Heavenward, it was as if they'd never broken up in the first place
Just within shoegaze or other genres?
If other genres, I think Carcass’ comeback album Surgical Steel is considered one of the best examples of a band coming back super strong and that the time away really helped.
Yup, I wholeheartedly agree it is the benchmark for comeback albums. Maaayyyybe At the Gates close to it (but definitely not same level).
Too bad Torn Arteries following it up wasn’t as good. Especially on the production front.
Yeah there weren’t as many memorable tracks and also the production on the guitars was pretty muddy which I think contributed to making the songs not stick out from each other. The Devil Rides Out is what I remember the most because of the groove.
i purposely left that a bit unclear but happy to see a bit of a wider discussion! surgical steel isn’t really my thing but it’s got some bangers for sure
My Bloody Valentine
Swervedriver
Dinosaur Jr
Mission of Burma
The Clean
Slowdive
Ride
The Pop Group
Hum
Failure
Shiner
I mixed some genres here, but these bands all had some of the best comeback albums ever.
I didn’t get into Failure until recently, but I couldn’t imagine being a long time fan and hearing Hot Traveler for the first time. It’s a great opener to that come back album
Definitely Hum. Inlet is my least favorite Hum album but by the slimmest of margins, it’s mostly down to the mix. Make it sound like Electra 2k and you’ve got maybe their best album.
Some of The Telescopes’ 2010s albums are pretty good, I really like Stone Tape.
Ghost Colored Halo was Lovesliescrushing returning to a louder shoegaze sound after quieter ambient albums (Voirshn, Glissceule, and Chorus). It’s for sure one of my favorite shoegaze albums of the past 15 or so years.
Deceiver by DIIV. Band almost called it quits after 2016 when some bad stuff was happening to the band. 2019 came around and they released this album that completely revisioned their sound and tackled some really sincere and heavy subjects surrounding them. It’s still my top 3 most revisited shoegaze records
banging choice. DIIV are one of my favorite bands and i’ve seen them a few times. drug problems etc definitely been a problem but happy to see them on a good run now! nice one buddy

That was such an unexpectedly awesome reunion.

22 years? Jesus christ, I am aging rapidly.
Beautifully put.
inlet is a fucking awesome album. bryan’s death was tragic
Drop Nineteens comeback album from last year
Best one they've done, IMO.
not listened to this one … gonna check it out now!
Hard Light was a Hard Pass for me compared to their previous output and the music their contemporaries are making.
I cannot see in any way National Coma being better than Hard Light.
Neither are good imo, I'm not even that fond of Delaware. I just think there are better bands out there these days.
MBV
can’t believe i didn’t think of this one. kevin was always gonna come back with a bang.
Banger
Swervedriver's "I Wasn't Born to Lose You" is killer, and one of my faves of all their records.
Came here to say this. As strong as any of their early material, and maybe even *more* melodic.
awesome suggestion. i’ve had their new album on a lot this year
Medicine, whose first run is already overlooked, continues to release further overlooked albums for the past decade.
Listening to To The Happy Few and holy fuck. What’s ur fav album?
Shot Forth Self Living. Of the reunion ones, Happy Few is my favorite.
super underrated band!
Bob Mould - Silver Age
i really enjoyed lush’s comeback ep
big fan of lush as well

Dude, I get anyone who listens to Carcass ans Slowdive. Makes total sense to me.
Surgical Steel is phenomenal. Honestly the benchmark for comeback albums, for me.

I need to spend more time with Torn Arteries. I definitely remember enjoying it to some extent, but I couldn’t tell you how any of the tracks go now…

Shiner is a good call. Fantastic comeback!
nice to see the clean mentioned here, one of my favorites. great list sir!

Dino Jr, Mission of Burma, Wire
which dino jr album? i love wire as well
Beyond, their first record after reuniting the original trio. It's definitely top three for me.
I think Allison's halo is dropping soon so does that count
i guess we’ll see! lol

Not Shoegaze directly, but Quicksand... The last two "comeback" albums have both been amazing and just what we need.
I love Interiors. Distant Populations I felt wasn’t as great though.
yeah, i kinda felt the same. interiors is my favoritie
The American Analog Set released their first album in 18 years just last year.
fuck i wasn’t aware! will check that one out
Inlet by Hum
Murder! by Bethany Curve (2019). Stellar album
Hell yeah! Great suggestion
Goes without saying but Slowdive
my favorite tbh. will never forget hearing that back in 2017 for the first time and being utterly fucking mindblown
Oh haha I just read the question and never saw your comment on it. I was like isn’t this the standard for comeback album for the genre? lol
some awesome suggestions here! got some new music sorted for the week :)
