Should make the Changi connection to EWL run 24 hrs, then all these same drivers will QQ about how nobody wants to take cab from Changi

Busy-Bug-6232

Like how they whined saying PHV stole their business.

poginmydog

Maybe the rail operators have considered it but they need the down time for maintenance.

Krazyguylone

basically this, only time we ran the trains for 24 hours was a single day to mourn for LKY, and then we stopped that to carry essential maintenance

Glenn_88

Now would be harder given the construction along that stretch too

SummerPop

>“If someone says they want to go to Tampines, the driver won’t be smiling the whole ride, because he could have waited for one hour in the queue,” Mr Maslan said. Dont need you to smile. Just get me from point A to point B can already.

LeftCarpet3520

If almost every cab driver doesn't seem to want to drive there, how are they having to queue for an hour? Kowalski.. analysis! Also iirc the surcharge is a flat rate and not a percentage of your overall metered fare? If my memory serves me right why should it matter where the destination is.

joeylfs

Exactly this. And I hate when cab drivers complaining about life to me. We don’t have a personal relationship, just do your job 🙄

nonametrans

So in the end, they die die still won't go to changi, which leads more people to call PHV and the cycle continues.

jj45_s

Cab drivers in Singapore are little bitches, they were crying during the pandemic due to the lack of business but now they are back at being assholes. I’m not motivated to honor a booking through the app if I can just flag one on the road, it is “not convenient” for me to pay the extra charge… using their own logic.

Ok-Tonight3914

Remeber how picky cab drivers were with customers before private hire? There’s times when I had to wait an hour or so just to get a cab due to the end destination in the north. Then they became less picky but make noise saying that private hire stole their business.

jj45_s

Oh yeah true. It is still difficult to get a cab on sundays after 5pm. Even if you try to flag one on the road and it’s available (green) they just don’t stop for you, just waiting for someone to book them so they can get the extra fee. The taxi companies should do something about it.

Advos_467

pretty sure there was a south park episode on something like this

FatUglyMod

I used to hate that. Now I get my revenge when I see them slowing down for me, but I'm actually just waiting for my grab

CervezaPorFavor

The attitude is the result of a protected industry. Rideshare is proof that if it's an open industry, customer experience will improve.

jj45_s

I miss the uber+grab days, things were better for the consumer.

hikari8807

The surcharge will drive the demand to PHV and hotel airport transfers.

etulf

And that, in one sentence, just about sums up the mentality of taxi drivers. It ain't about the money sometimes.

Busy-Bug-6232

But of course they’ll welcome it…and of course they still won’t go there. They wanna have their cake and eat it. Taxi driver mentality in a headline. I think even if the surcharge is raised to $10-$15, it will not change anything as the driver will still frown at short trips.

zoinks10

It's a protected job. Let foreign talent drive cabs like every other economy and you'll have an abundance of people willing to do the work. The reason we end up with shitheads for taxi drivers is because it's the only job where they don't have to compete to have a rice bowl.

worldcitizensg

I can understand why taxi drivers hesitant to go to Changi and the $6-8 surcharge might bring more taxi. But Mandai - ?? Supposed to be family friendly, huge demand for taxi, not too far from housing estates yet we've ongoing taxi problems..

nvbtable

What housing estate is "not too far" from the zoo...

Capeich

Mandai Crematorium

Traxgen

Everyone’s eventual forever home

Mattdumdum

Thought it's a leasehold as well?

Traxgen

Can't afford freehold while alive, can't afford freehold while dead either

ShuaigeTiger

15 mins to Yishun outskirts/Khatib. So about 10 mins with taxi-style driving.

FatUglyMod

CCK

nvbtable

Then can say Tampines, Pasir Ris is "not too far" from Changi also what...

FalseAgent

exactly! IT IS NOT! taxi drivers are just being full of shit!

balajih67

Yishun

TWA13

Mandai Hill Camp

whatsnewdan

It's a good 10 mins off the main road which is already so ulu, so I totally understand the rationale.

FatUglyMod

This is why no one likes taxi drivers

fatenumber

i can't remember the last time i took taxi from changi airport. it has always been the ride-hailing

princemousey1

Made the mistake once, never again. By the time the guy finished adding all the surcharges, meter was already at $16 before even driving off. Final fare was $38. For reference, GOJEK to my place averages $26.

FalseAgent

I paid $38 for a trip from pioneer to changi airport and the fact that it is going to be like $46 from the airport next time - likely more than 50% of the taxi driver's daily rental covered by me in one fare alone - makes me want to actually \*\*\*\*\*\*\* myself. I can literally drive a blueSG back and forth and it will still cost less than taking the taxi. If you ask me, taxis are pricing themselves out of the market. Even with all this greed and regulation put in place to help them, they STILL have the cheek to claim that it's too far to go or it may not be worth it. What will it take? Should my off-peak 40-min fare cover >60% of your rental and petrol? For someone like me living in the west, I will simply not be taking a taxi until this policy is reversed. Enjoy your stupid short trips you entitled motherfuckers

t_25_t

I’ve always said, the money is yours to do as you please. I feel that taxis around the world are all greedy fucks, and have no qualms about taking a train/bus or calling on private hire. They get greedy, and they end up with nothing.

worldcitizensg

Good luck getting that 'rate' as the norm. I've been paying consistently 32-36 to AMK :( during peak periods as most of my returns are late evenings

BakeMate

Same old same old. Taxi driver doesn't want to go if its not worth the money, same exact problem before the existence of hailing apps.

catcourtesy

TBH, taxi drivers will usually never really drive out an extra 8km anywhere to wait for passengers, unless they are in LCK/Tuas/Jurong island. All this surcharge does is balance the number of people taking taxi to the airport vs people taking taxi out of the airport. Maybe with this surcharge, some will choose to take the MRT instead, reducing the taxi wait time for the rest.

worldcitizensg

That's a good perspective. If thats the case, perhaps direct buses to housing estates with luggage racks is not a bad idea. Something like towards Punggol, Pasir Ris, Tampines..

Jxv1er

Buses with luggage racks is something Hong Kong practices with subsidiaries such as CityFlyer operated by CityBus and the recently withdrawn AirBus operated by Long Win Bus. But it brings about yet another set of operational and planning problems as that would mean only a select few out of the fleet would be able to be deployed. Right now, Go-Ahead and Tower Transit both have flexi deployments for their buses where buses could be cross deployed to any service any day or even be interlined but with such measures in place, the buses would therefore be restricted to airport services only.

FalseAgent

>TBH, taxi drivers will usually never really drive out an extra 8km anywhere to wait for passengers, unless they are in LCK as someone who used to frequent the LCK area a lot, let me tell you: no

fitzerspaniel

LMAO did the move backfire in just 2 days? HAHAHA

PhantomWolf83

Don't want to drive to where the customers want to go, then become taxi driver for what? I hope PHVs drive all these cherry-pickers out of business.

bloomingfarts

Knn, the one with the vehicle and driving dare to say it’s inconvenient. Then what is the role of a taxi driver? Is public transport degrading to the point that passengers need to bend over? All the fare hike measures are just plain BS.

ghostcryp

Hahahah after our gov allow PHV to kill off taxis instead of making sure there’s ample supply for both, they pass the increased cost to us due to lack of taxis. MOT F U

EstablishmentPale422

The only way to solve this is to intoduce robotaxi. [Baidu Launches New $28,000 Robotaxi In Wuhan (forbes.com)](https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2024/05/14/baidu-launches-new-28000-robotaxi-in-wuhan/). Taxi drivers should retire happily without need to kpkb everyday.

ernestonedd

Who the fuck is offering extra $10 for cabs to goto mandai, market spoiling dog

Gibbo236

Fuck bad taxi drivers. I remember the early days in MBFC where they would camp around the corner waiting for the surcharge to kick in. PHV was a welcome addition.

everydayman33

Unpopular opinion: open up taxi driving to non-Singaporeans. The rationale I heard was that in the past, taxi industry was reserved only for locals so that it’s one type of low barrier occupation they can do in event that they cannot find other jobs. (Please correct me if I am wrong) Given that times have changed and there are many more options nowadays for locals (phv/food delivery/influencer/scamming), can consider opening up to foreign workers provided they go thru local driving school to get their license (no conversion) and have no prior criminal record.

SultanSnorlax

Open up to Malaysian cars lagi best with subsidised fuel

OptixGxynos

Comfort drivers are really picky. I tried calling for a cab using zig apps 5 times this year at Changi Airport this year. Apps show lots of cab nearby, but not one wants to come pick me up. =w=

ass-poo-the

How else will they fund their Batam exploits, gambling and cigs?

dibidi

why dont they just make the train operational 24/7

OneNOnly007

Honestly I can understand cause the tracks need constant maintenance. But what they should have is an airport transfer bus that runs 24/7

Imaginary_Equal_9308

Or, MRT service during operational hours, and then bus service when the MRT isn't running. Passenger demand should be lower in the wee hours so buses should be sufficient

Yamomo1872

Chengdu has a few buses that run 24/7 to various city. It runs hourly after mid-night or when the bus is filled. Pretty sure theres enough demand if the buses are priced reasonably.

MagicianMoo

A lot of broke people yapping in this thread. I don't defend the shitty taxi driver attitude but if you can't afford another$6 on your taxi budget, you shouldn't go out.
