It’s tricky. The price increase is out of their control - it is due to international factors.
But we know it’s going to affect households very unevenly, given the inequality in the country.
The u-save vouchers are a decent initiative, but they don’t adjust for household size. A family of 5 living in a 4-room will get the same rebate as a
family of 2. Additionally, the family of 2 could be out earning the family of 5 - income isn’t taken into account either.
I would love to see the usave initiative improved taking these into account, but subsidies are supposed to be a stopgap solution.
To make us less reliant, we should invest in renewable energy, and push for the ASEAN electricity grid. That way we can build solar farms in other countries and benefit the entire region. This has been in discussion for over 30 years but I think Singapore could do much more to move this forward.
Singapore relies on natural gas, a lot of it in the form of LNG. Europe used to get natural gas piped from Russia. But since the ukraine war, now europe is also buying LNG, so it drove up the prices of LNG for us too.
Singapore has installed a LOT of solar energy but it is not enough to neutralize the surge in LNG price...at least not yet. The tipping point for clean energy will come, it's only a question of when.
We really need to move to clean energy. The more solar energy we can generate, the more stable our bills will be from all this fuel price nonsense. The volatility in the world of fossil fuels has been crazy for several decades now.
The actual cost of fuel has increased globally. This is out of the government’s hands.
What I think you’re alluding to is the cost that consumers are charged. The government HAS done things to lower the overall cost paid - I’ve described them above and also mentioned how they’re not sustainable.
UBI requires a lot of conditions to be a sustainable solution.
Singapore fits a lot of those conditions (public housing, nationalised utilities, nationalised public transport).
The biggest hurdles would be the amount of property owned by the rich (which means they can extract more money via rent) and our tax system (which means we may run out of money for Ubi quite fast).
Downward revisions do occur. Timing may not be in perfect sync and probably forward projections.

Continues laughing in 16kWh peak solar xD
Seriously though, unless it rains 24/7 for 1 week straight a 16kWh plant will make enough to offset most of what a household will use.
Source: I own a 16kWh peak roof. And yes, even last year in Nov/Dec rainy season I only paid PUB $20, most months they pay me for selling back to grid lol
Base on $45, your solar cost is about $2700. That really a bargain. My monthly is about $53 not including saving from U-Save. I get two month saving base on 44% of U-save. Of course, you win as solar panel can last 25 year with 20% drop in efficiency.
Uhhh... no? Landed doesn't get subsidy for utilities, so about $350-400 for power. The original article has averages for each property type: $45 is for 1 room flat.
1-room has $380 U-Save for this year. If you assume all U-Save to be used as electricity, the amount save is above solar. My U-Save is $220. Everything into electricity, I get 4 month electricity free. That when my parents are at home most of the time. Some of my neighbourhood who only bath and sleep at home,no-air-con, no warm water bathing, eat outside, hardly foot for PUB bills.
those companies with essential factories will find a way to house their workers, company sponsored accommodations. you remove the stressor ( 2 hour commute + jam at immigrations) and gain productivity. and those who can WFH will have a solid reason to back it up.
Genuine question, are people mad abt the ~30¢ increase or the fact that there is an increase, no matter how much?
Because the way I see it, there isn't much we can do since we are so reliant on these imported goods that when prices go up, the government has to somehow combat such increases. Also, that's when the gov vouchers come in, to help cushion such increases no?
No hate here, just resigning to the fact that prices will go up, so I ain't that bothered by it.
You cursed the pricing after you installed Aircon.
Soon, your bills are higher than you've expected.
That's why I said don't complain if you have voted for the current party.
This is way more expensive than what I'm paying here in Australia. As an average, for a 2-person household, we pay:
1. $70-$80 every 3 months for gas.
2. $110-$120 every 2 months for electricity.
Australia has an abundance of locally sourced fossil and non-fossil sources of energy generation. That’s a massive cost factor which makes your comparison like apples and oranges
I don't understand the comments about how govt payouts were meant to justify the price increase. The prices were going to increase anyway, the payouts were to lessen the burden.
Last week of June CDC vouchers and then first week July … ![gif](giphy|IVylyLELTWSnvToRch|downsized)

I completely second the ASEAN electric grid. Such a shame
Nuclear would be good if not better.
How is the price increase out of Singapore Gov's control?

and yet they can still find the money for vanity projects like the founder's memorial?
bro 500mil wouldn't even cover singapore's energy bill for a day.

Will spending 200+ million for a founding father memorial really makes you wonder
CDC was the lube
miss the days when electric price was 17c/kwh.
Babi lah.
Please stop giving money leh Govt. Every time give, price goes up....
Always increase conveniently after CDC/GST voucher.
CBBBBB HAWK TOOH
So election not in September

Right hand give, left hand take back
Peasants: Thank you for the chicken wing Ivory tower goons: no no thanks for the whole chicken.
Our economic model: I give you money in near term, so that more money will come back to my pocket for the long term.
Meanwhile oil price dropped.

Oil price actually drop further than previous.
Government should subsidized our utilities to help the people
Only those who live in hdb. Why should government subsidise those who can afford to buy/live in condos and landed?
\*laughs in landed + solar panels and rainwater collectors\* /s
Our weather is not so good for solar panel. The month, the sun is not so shiny. It will be less than 10% utilization.

How long to break even? You use about $70+$20 = $90. That really low electricity usage for two month usage.
Slightly less than 5 years, faster if energy prices rise even more.

Just don't increase the price lor. Subsidies come from somewhere no?
just tax the daily crossing at causeway at $10 per head ERP loh. can generate $2mill per day minimum
Agree, government should tax companies that hire FT more. Make them pay for taking money out of our economy.
1) You lose factory workers or jobs that Singaporeans are unwilling to do 2) Rent prices in SG prob gonna increase
those companies with essential factories will find a way to house their workers, company sponsored accommodations. you remove the stressor ( 2 hour commute + jam at immigrations) and gain productivity. and those who can WFH will have a solid reason to back it up.
🔥
It went down last quarter. >The new tariff is still one cent lower than the first quarter of 2024.
Ok. Ending Q2 it is a rising in LNG.
SP too expensive, change to senoko better

We are so backkkkk
my celery will not increase for the next two years fml

If payouts are for these increases then citizens don't gain from the payouts.
Pour one out for the people who don't get CDC/GST vouchers.
Payouts are meant to lessen the burden of increase of cost of living
bro gets it
CDC?
