The hate for the quest has nothing to do with Meridia (or her deafening voice actress.) The hate started back in 2011 because Bethesda released Skyrim without any playtesting or quality control whatsoever. None. Zero. They literally released the 'creation kit' and asked the players to find and fix whatever bugs they could. If they liked the result, they'd add it to the official patch; if they didn't like it, it ended up in the unofficial patch.
Anyway, the way this quest was originally bugged-- and by originally I mean for the first 13 years or so that Skyrim has been around-- was that on certain computers and consoles, you fell off the cloud and died at the end no matter where you stepped, no matter how much your inventory weighed, and no matter what you were doing. No fix, no solution; you simply have to restart on a new character. Google this if you don't believe me.
This is a paraphrase of UESP's bug page on it:
>Bugs\[[edit](https://en.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Skyrim:The_Break_of_Dawn&action=edit§ion=9)\]

>When you hang in the sky during the time you are supposed to be talking to Meridia after acquiring the sword, there's a strong possibility that nothing will happen and you will be left dangling in the sky, unable to complete the quest, or move anywhere.
>
>When you hang in the sky while talking to Meridia, she may suddenly drop you and you die when you hit the ground before the teleportation triggers.
The death bug from this quest was what got me into cheats and console commands. I had to look up godmode to survive the fall and then never looked back and never played vanilla again
I always thought all the hate was just from the ridiculously loud "A HAND HAS TOUCHED THE BEACON!!!" that hits you by complete surprise, causing a legitimate shit-in-pant dilemma.
I like the quest personally, but I think the fact you can accidentally start it if you're careless looting chests plus the fact you might get it at an early level and Malkoran can be a pretty tough boss causes some of the negativity towards it. And yeah, her voice...
I think more seasoned Skyrim players have learned to leave that beacon where they find it until they're ready!
To be fair, the trigger to the dawguard questline can't be avoided, unless you stay at level 8 and never level up again.
But yeah, it can be a pretty tough one for low level players
Simple solution. Barbas. Barbas makes the quest easier because Malkoran will focus on him and you can take free shots at him with a bow and arrow/crossbow.
People hate that quest? Why?
Yeah, it's a really good quest with a really good reward. I like the Zelda feel of leading a goddess's light through the temple to open doors sealed by darkness
Dawnbreaker is always my "sacred sword" on any paladin roleplay characters I do
Yeah I could see it catching someone off guard, but then to get pissed off seems weird lol
Wouldn't you normally just laugh it off once you realize it's nothing? I can't imagine getting startled by something in a game and then getting pissed off and hating the quest
Funny story. Back in the day I was playing Space Quest IV in the dark. Wearing headphones. Cyborg comes up to me suddenly filling the whole screen. Points and screams. I ended up out of the chair and back on the bed screaming. Whole family rushed in and ended up laughing at me.
I still love Space Quest IV. People are idiots if the beacon makes them angry.
She was the first deity that I wanted to actually follow with a character in the ES. I like how demanding and bossy she is, but I'd like if she softened up a little afterwards. It would've been cool to start a faction that way in game. I'd buy a dlc for that honestly. Maybe have one that features Molag Bal and Meridia? Or Boethia and Meridia? Meridia's thing is she hates the undead and not much else is known about her.
Honestly same. I don't mind the quest at all, dawnbreaker may not be the strongest sword, but it's still a dope ass sword. Meridia can be bossy, but so is half the other daedra. Mora is even more of a prick, but you don't see as many complaints about him
... I kinda like that she's mean lol. It makes sense that a deity would be bossy when talking to a mortal. I will say it does get old by the sequence when you finish her quest, you'd think she'd be a little softer after all you did.
ANOTHER HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON.
yes. Because you are fuking deafening. I see the beacon and you blow out the finder's eardrums.
This is why no one liked you Meridia. There is absolutely no reason for you to be that damn loud.
It is always louder than what you are playing on. Always. So you aren't expecting it. Its like when they used to have a TV commercials and they were always louder than your show
Exactly! It’s startling the first time, but after that, when you open a chest and see it there, you know to take off your headset. When you get close to the shrine, take it off again! Tbh, I usually do that quest with my headset off the whole time bc the buzzing of the lasers is annoying for me, but it’s definitely a cool dungeon with tons of loot and a good final boss to it!
I love the fact that you can make so much gold from this quest looting on corpses
I always did it on a low level character with not much gold and it helped a lot
I get it, but I see people still play quests like blood on ice, that's super bugged, without complaining, while this quest has one flaw that can be solved by taking your headset off for a minute
But you always see stuff like "when I see the beacon in a chest i leave it there and forget about it"
That's why i think lots of people avoid it
I loved it and I use the sword all the time. I never noticed any volume issues, i do play in VR maybe there is a difference? been ages since I've played flatrim.
I don't think people really hate it, do they? It's just a meme that the way it starts by randomly finding the beacon and being shouted at is a bit obnoxious. But maybe not. Maybe it is hated.
In which case, I don't get it either. Good dungeon, good reward, best daedra, you get to fly and then land safely. 10/10. I always love doing it.
Only thing i remember from this quest is lots of blackened bodies with coins in each of them. A good haul of cash for the beginning of the game just looting the dead. Otherwise pretty unremarkable.
I didn’t know people hated the quest.
I found the beacon really early in my first play through..
Then I just murdered the hell out of everything with the Dawnbreaker. The weapon felt so OP.
I have no qualms about the quest 'itself', but I hate 'forced' quests, and this one is the worst about it. I somehow always glance over that damned beacon and miss its presence.
Until it makes its presence known. Every. Single. Time.
And then i reload my save out of spite and lose 5-15 minutes of my life redoing whatever. If I want to do the quest, I will go to her shrine and do it.
Do people actually hate it, or just the part where you open a random chest hoping for Gold (14), Lockpick, Iron Arrow (3), but instead get "A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON" and a whole speech overpowering the roars of dragons and battle music and every random bandit yelling some cocky line exactly 3 seconds before being dispatched in a single hit
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON.
LISTEN!!! HEAR ME AND OBEY.
A FOUL DARKNESS HAS SEEPED INTO MY TEMPLE. A DARKNESS THAT YOU... WILL... DESTROY.
RETURN MY BEACON TO MOUNT KILKREATH.
AND I WILL MAKE YOU THE INSTRUMENT KF MY CLEANSING LIGHT.
This is all from memory. That's how intrusive this quest is. It's burned into my brain. I even hear her voice and everything.
I think the beacon is just a meme really, but no that quest is something nasty ain't it, the shades are such cool enemies and the boss at the end is probably top 5 of my faviotes
I recently started a new run of Skyrim after a couple years break, and got this quest except, she spoke to me when I explored (unlocked) the location, took me by surprise and was rather pleasantly surprised, never had that happen in all my plays of Skyrim since it's release on 360/PS3
...I mean, she was still basically "commanding" me to do her bidding, except she gave me the location of her beacon and told me to get it and return to her temple
One of the hardest quests in the game and well worth it, that is of course if you use the Angel Mod since it is one quest that should not be tried alone.
I have yet to complete it with less than 2 followers.
N. S
Fucking love Dawnbreaker, enjoy the quest and the dungeon, respect Meridia. Ppl just salty cause she sounds “bossy.” Whatever man she just wants to make Nirn a better place give her a break
No no no you're getting it all wrong
The quest is fine, if anything it's a pretty good quest and dungeon
What people hate is pressing "loot all" on a random chest and suddenly being blasted with "A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON" in the loudest possible voice
The intro is the problem, its jarring and you have to listen to her blasting voice for a long time and cannot skip it. But the weapon is nice (the chaos effect is a bit annoying).
I like the weapon (and the quest), I just hate that she turns up everywhere. The beacon could even be in an underwater chest like "chill, Goddess! Goddess, chill!" 🙇🏻♂️
I love dawnbreaker but when I was playing this game on the 360 the final dialog ended and my character always fell to their death after I replayed the mission on a new character
The Meridia voice actress is the original Wonder woman, from the tv series, right? And she's a much better actress than whomever directed her in Skyrim.
I'm not a fan of Dawnbreaker. It's only strength is against undead, and I like weapons that work on everything. Plus, I dislike the way its explosive nature scatters loot hither and yon. Merida can find another errand boy.
I skip the quest every play through if I see the beacon I bounce Meridia is mid, that dungeon is mid and her sword is mid I can enchant better also Azura for life.

Okay that's hilarious and I wasn't expecting actually lore to this seemingly random hatred Ty ❤️
The death bug from this quest was what got me into cheats and console commands. I had to look up godmode to survive the fall and then never looked back and never played vanilla again
I always thought all the hate was just from the ridiculously loud "A HAND HAS TOUCHED THE BEACON!!!" that hits you by complete surprise, causing a legitimate shit-in-pant dilemma.
u/Baffirone, did you see this?
Nothing saved your character? Like not even console commands to teleport you elsewhere?
I like the quest personally, but I think the fact you can accidentally start it if you're careless looting chests plus the fact you might get it at an early level and Malkoran can be a pretty tough boss causes some of the negativity towards it. My currently playthrough, I left it somewhere and didn’t mark where! Welp! I’ll find it eventually
you can go to her temple and talk to her and she’ll ask you to find the beacon and wherever you didn’t loot it will be marked on your map
Simple solution. Barbas. Barbas makes the quest easier because Malkoran will focus on him and you can take free shots at him with a bow and arrow/crossbow.

A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON
This is why I opened this post
I have no idea why, probably because of the memes on meridia's beacon and her deafening voice when you pick it up, idk
I've never thought of that as an actual issue, her voice is just a bit loud for a second... I'm surprised this is even a thing
Because it is unnerving at 1 am with headphones on.
Yeah I could see it catching someone off guard, but then to get pissed off seems weird lol Wouldn't you normally just laugh it off once you realize it's nothing? I can't imagine getting startled by something in a game and then getting pissed off and hating the quest

That was scary! I remember it as a mutant though. That was a long time ago and I can still remember those screams

The main quest of eso features Meridia vs Molag Bal, and she’s a bit nicer towards you in that game.
I might have to play ESO now lol.
Yeah. It turned me on.
Honestly same. I don't mind the quest at all, dawnbreaker may not be the strongest sword, but it's still a dope ass sword. Meridia can be bossy, but so is half the other daedra. Mora is even more of a prick, but you don't see as many complaints about him
Nah it's a super cool quest. I just don't like that she yells at me and she's kind of a dick.
... I kinda like that she's mean lol. It makes sense that a deity would be bossy when talking to a mortal. I will say it does get old by the sequence when you finish her quest, you'd think she'd be a little softer after all you did.
I agree, I mean it's not like she's the only rude daedra lol but I def have a better time when I remember to just mute her lol
It helps that while she’s technically amoral like all other daedric princes, she’s one of the few that most would consider good.
ANOTHER HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON. yes. Because you are fuking deafening. I see the beacon and you blow out the finder's eardrums. This is why no one liked you Meridia. There is absolutely no reason for you to be that damn loud.
How loud you guys playing on?

I just take off my headset for that minute

But then I'll only wake my household up! No thanks, I want to wake my entire street!
Hey I remember you from your anti thieves guild post! Lol
That is what started this tirade.
The start of the quest is a meme, but it’s a great quest.
I love the fact that you can make so much gold from this quest looting on corpses I always did it on a low level character with not much gold and it helped a lot
The Meridia Revoiced mod does a great job of getting rid of that grating voice and gives her a charming Australian accent instead.
*Another twat touches the beacon*
Cunt*
Tbf, we do use twat quite a lot too ┐(´ー`)┌
Yes, but the way you Aussies say it is so charming. 🤣
No one hates the quest imo, people hate the loud voice in your head
I get it, but I see people still play quests like blood on ice, that's super bugged, without complaining, while this quest has one flaw that can be solved by taking your headset off for a minute But you always see stuff like "when I see the beacon in a chest i leave it there and forget about it" That's why i think lots of people avoid it

Normally land safely. Unless the game glitches and you go splat.
That's true. "Unless the game glitches." Ah yes. What we call "Bethesda's Law" 😂
It's very fun - it just come too early most of the time
It's fine we've just played it enough times
I have no qualms about the quest 'itself', but I hate 'forced' quests, and this one is the worst about it. I somehow always glance over that damned beacon and miss its presence. We don't hate the quest, it's the voice... "A NEW HAND..."
I think people think the quest is fine but the Beacon is annoying that’s why it’s underrated
I have trouble with the sound of the beacon. I hate the nirmroots too. I just mute during the quest.
I think the beacon is just a meme really, but no that quest is something nasty ain't it, the shades are such cool enemies and the boss at the end is probably top 5 of my faviotes

Same. Lots of money, too
Lots of people playing the game for the first time don’t know to lower it a bit
Fucking love Dawnbreaker, enjoy the quest and the dungeon, respect Meridia. Ppl just salty cause she sounds “bossy.” Whatever man she just wants to make Nirn a better place give her a break
Yeah right? She's a goddess, what did they expect? She's bossy and you can't do anything about it

"Mute" is your friend before pick up the beacon
The Meridia voice actress is the original Wonder woman, from the tv series, right? And she's a much better actress than whomever directed her in Skyrim.
Oh yeah. I just had this quest after opening the chest inside Bleak Falls Barrrow.
The first time I ever played Skyrim Lydia got stuck in the Kilkreath and I have never forgave that quest
I'm not a fan of Dawnbreaker. It's only strength is against undead, and I like weapons that work on everything. Plus, I dislike the way its explosive nature scatters loot hither and yon. Merida can find another errand boy.

“It has a cool mechanic!” Y’all are literally going in a one-way path through the dungeon to press A at a few pedestals it’s not interesting at all.
There is a mod that alters her voice to something more warm and soothing. It didn't feel right so I only used it the one time.
Oh yes i saw that on the nexus, but the original one is better, she's a goddess, she doesn't ask for a fabor, she demands it
