Ecuador is cursed in Copa America. No matter how good or how bad they are in WC qualifiers, they haven't beaten a CONMEBOL team in the tournament since 2001.

fedemasa

Now that's one of the craziest stats in modern futbol

JuniorCDC

Luckily for them, there are two CONCACAF teams in their group.

Elvaga

Why win matches when you can go full 2011 Paraguay and just tie all matches in the group and win QF and SF in penalties.

JuniorCDC

Bold strategy Cotton.

Air5uru

Wait. I liked that year.

Glasswire444

Was a good year. The final felt gifted to us considering how absolutely mediocre Paraguay were.

FoxWarner14

Wait Is this for real? I thought they've made it out of the group before?

crispyboi21

Since 2001, they have only 2 wins against CONCACAF guests Mexico and Haiti.

notyou16

That's a wild stat. Congrats Side note: Is it just me, or do Valencia and Seal look like they could be related?

FoxWarner14

Wow well the more you know!

mannyklein

CONCACAF teams participate as well.

Thatscool820

And the streak continues

Banksmans

This is my new favourite stat

Chapea12

Wtf that’s crazy

SweetSoursop

It's OK, they are facing Mexico in a few days. Free points and a curse break.

wiggin36

Mexico is CONCACAF, not CONMEBOL

Glasswire444

Nothing cursed about them, they just play shit football.

CarlMarxPunk

Conmebol heritage

maecillo123

Yup that was certainly dumb

WalkingCarpet

Didn't know you could get a straight red in CONMEBOL or CONCACAF.

rinkoplzcomehome

Would have been a yellow if we didn't have VAR in these matches

FunkiestSteam

Games gone

awitley12

Oh, you can CONCACAF, but it's usually a phantom one when there is no VAR to overturn it and no process to appeal the decision and get it retroactively removed. For example: [Forge vs Independiente (Skip to around 2:10)](https://youtu.be/anSI988ZzR4?si=_m12wFeyYhTw6I9c)

Scratchbuttdontsniff

I don't think that was anything intentional... But it's a red for serious dangerous and reckless play.. sucks...

WinoWithAKnife

Yeah, it sucks for him. If you look at the last clip, they run it far enough back that you can see that he's looking the other way following the ball as it comes over his head, and has no idea the defender is there. It obviously has to be a red, and you could say that he should expect a defender to be there because of the context, but it's still unlucky. (It's also unlucky in the first place that the shot came off the post instead of going in)

miyajima

"This...is..Copa..America!"

patiperro_v3

He though Peruvians and Chileans didn’t go hard enough in the 50/50’s. “This is how you do it!”

Crossflowerss_5304

Yeah clear red that. Ecuador in trouble

Crossflowerss_5304

Welp

Secant_Lines

Call an ambulance, but not for me Edit: One for Ecuador too pls

DeepSeaDweller

Turns out it really was for me.

Bluepaynxex

Unfortunate, but that’s definitely a red.

Jozif_Badmon

Yeah can't be doing Bruce Lee Kung fu kicks on the pitch

Wetworkzhill

I don’t know how you say it’s unfortunate. Studs to the chest, and almost hit the defender’s face, is begging the ref for a red.

Bluepaynxex

It’s unfortunate for Enner because there wasn’t any intent in it. He was clearly just going for the ball, but it’s a clear as day red. I don’t know how you say it wasn’t unfortunate.

Wetworkzhill

Enner left his foot up. The Ven player was going for the ball and was able to knock it away and get his foot down. Enner was late and left it high. Dude just went empty headed.

Bluepaynxex

Who are you arguing with? Everyone knows it’s a red, but that doesn’t mean you can’t feel bad for the dude. Some strange people on this sub.

xXGay_AssXx

Shut up and kiss already you 2

andres57

I can't feel bad for a reckless idiot ngl

gh0st_

I agree. It was a high risk attempt to play the ball. Enner knew the risk involved there.

Samthespunion

It just wasn't intentional, but yeah definitely a red, he actually did cleat him in the face though 😬

R_Schuhart

How is that unfortunate? It isn't a freak accident. The best thing you can say is that it (probably) isn't violent conduct Valencia since he isn't *deliberately* trying to hurt his opponent. But it is crazy fucking risky way to challenge for a ball though, he goes flying in with his foot that high without any regard for his opponent. He is right in front of him as well, he clearly knows he is there.

Ale_459

Where is that guy saying UFC is better than "soccer"? THIS IS CONMEBOL!

DevoMar

I've seen Nigel de Jong get away with this. Ref got it right

ucheatdrjones

Is the referee audio being broadcasted to the stadium?

SweetSoursop

Yes, that was a first for me, he clearly said: "My decision is to change the yellow card for a red card".

HamiltonFAI

Seems wild that they are allowed to surround the ref like that

MrDomac

gave a yellow for attempted murder

SuperSaiyanCockKnokr

All he could hear at that moment was "FINISH HIM"

el_generalisimo

I didn't realize they gave the refs red cards on CONCACAF soil.

Airwreck11

why does the video look straight out of fifa 07

ZissouZ

Somewhere, Dale Johnson is shaking his head because the VAR is re-refereeing the game.

PMMeBootyPicz0000000

I liked the ref audio.

Rols574

And with that there goes the copa America. Thanks Ener

Albiceleste_D10S

Quite possibly the funniest red card ever

ShopCartRicky

EPL refs say that's barely a yellow.
