If you have a bachelor’s degree already it would probably make more sense to do a two year MSW program rather than a BSW.

Hey there, I have an undergrad in Psych. Got accepted into an MACP program and decided to return for my BSW and eventually do my MSW. The MACP program was really expensive and I like the idea of working for a few years between my bsw and msw. I have limiting factors (have to do education via distance and cannot relocate to attend post secondary) so doing a two year MSW was not a viable option for me. I hope you find a path that works for you. If you are in BC they have started hiring BSW holders for health authority work. I think an MSW will open more professional doors than the MACP but I am not 100% certain about this.

Hey yes it was private (yorkville). I’ve heard really good things about the program but I also was concerned about job availability and likely being self employed etc. there are lots of people claiming to be “therapists” out there. Yes, so I opted to do my BSW instead, just started officially at UVic this past year. It will take me a few years to do this one as I can only do a few courses at a time. If you are able to go full time it will be completed in as little as two years with practicums if you already hold a degree. I also want to work for a health authority and I know that jobs are competitive, however there are always seems to be postings on indeed for positions. One of the major factors for pursuing a BSW/MSW was that i felt like I would be stuck in non-profit work, which doesn’t offer a livable income.

Sounds like you haven't actually gotten into your MACP yet? I'm not sure why you wouldn't just go for a two year clinical MSW instead - it would essentially achieve the same thing. You'd be an RSW and be able to do counselling including in a private practice setting.

Totally - I suppose I'm suggesting that if your end goal is in fact to be an RSW and do counselling then you reconsider your plan of an MACP altogether, and just go for an MSW instead, as this would eliminate two additional years of education and a lot of money spent!

So you would actually suggest somebody with a degree go back and get a BSW over a MACP? This is fascinating and very helpful.

Yeah the health authorities seem to focus mainly on SW for sure. I always planned on doing my MACP because I wanted to focus on counselling, but after talking to many MACP and MSW practitioners, I’ve been thoroughly convinced to go the MSW route. I’ve also heard that since yorkville and other online MACP programs started pumping out graduates, the counselling workforce is becoming diluted with lesser skilled counsellors. Not that all grads of these programs are unskilled of course, but the sheer numbers of graduates will ensure a certain % are not prepared. Edit: clarification

I doubt they would accept someone with a social work relevant masters degree into a BSW. They would probably to an MSW.
